Had a great dining experience until went to restroom with my mom who is unable to wear a mask due to health issues and was harassed by an employee and a customer who said "I hope you shit your pants" then the manager proceeded to take our pictures from inside the restaurant while we dined outside without our consent! As if this place needs me to sing it's praises, Tres just seems to keep getting better. Not only are the drinks and food excellent, but the people are the real gems of this business. Since moving back to town recently I find myself there at least once a week mainly to come and see the employees who never fail to make my day. Salena has helped me a few times and couldn't be more warm and welcoming; not to mention the fact that her sense of initiative and efficiency are excellent. Tim and Angel behind the bar are excellent guys as well who make you feel more like you're at a friends house for a drink rather than a public restaurant. If the best margaritas in Chico and being treated like your business is a positive addition to their day sounds appealing, the good folks at Tres won't let you down. I have loved this place for years! Now after covid has a new inspired owner and the food is great! I had 2 enchiladas, one chicken, one cheese. Beans and rice were delicious and moist. Chips and salsa were so crisp and fresh. Salsa was just how I like it! I am craving the enchiladas after 3 days! Take advantage of this small business when it's open. I see right now it's mostly open Wednesday-Sunday 12-10pm but I could be wrong. I can't wait to have lunch there today! I'm going to order the same dish! read more

My friend and I came on a Friday around 7 and we got told there was going to be a 40 min wait, but ended up only waiting about 15-20 minutes which was great. It was super busy but our waiter Juan was very attentive. We ordered a pitcher of blackberry margarita and it was delicious!!! I was highly impressed by the taste but also the price! $23? A steal. Came here on a Friday for lunch and was seated immediately, maybe because the school was off. Drinks: I got the avocado margarita, which was different and was in a slushee form. I recommend it if you like slushee drinks, it's creamy and smooth. Appetizer: They give free chips and salsa. I understand it's free but the quantity sucked, it was maybe 12-15 chips and a small salsa for four people. I mean at least give two salsa for four people. New to Chico and in town for the weekend I wanted to go find a fun, hip, place for an early dinner on a Friday. I stumbled upon the downtown area. After walking around all the blocks I decided to try this place, despite the mediocre reviews. The place is appealing from outside and in. Large room, big bar and seating near it, and a tapas/tortillas cooking bar (kind of like California Pizza Chicken where you can sit and watch food being made. The place was hopping and I imagine when it's warmer the outside patio would be filled. I sat by the tortilla making bar and was immediately greeted by a great, very responsive and attentive waiter, JP. He was knowledgable, suggested a great margarita with upscale tequila, yet could be made with less sugar (I'm diabetic). It was fantastic. I ordered the Fajita salad with chicken (there's probably a different name but it was really delicious. The chips and salsa were appetizing. I really enjoyed the experience. The only thing that "really" bothered me (and this is by no means unique to this restaurant or any food place) is that I NEVER, EVER saw a single cook or server wash their hands. Zero. Non. The guys in front of me were touching everything all around the fryer, including touching the communal screen to put in orders and other things then touching food. touching utensils, reaching all around the stove, handing every little piece of food. And they were lucky in that unlike many restaurants, there was a sink right there to use!!! Occasionally one or two cooks put on one blue gloves to handle the food, but if you know anything about germs (I'm an RN, so I do) you still have to wash your hands before and after you put on gloves. It's sad that they don't seem to have common sense to protect their patrons. Just imagine the number of persons with underlying weak immune systems (those on steroids, those undergoing some mild form of chemotherapy, those with HIV, infants, and the elderly. Again, it wasn't intentional, I'm sure. I bet 95% of the entire employees do it. The tenants of proper food handling must come in repetitive training, diligent monitoring for adherence, repercussions for non-compliance, and counseling. Management needs to create that culture. Imagine what just ONE episode of food-borne illness would do to their reputation. I should of said something while I was there, but then the manager would have just told the guys working and nothing further would have happened. It's not a random incident, like I said. It's their practice and how their standards have eroded away in an attempt to be fast, efficient, and less hampered. Otherwise, LOVED the place. read more

This restaurant was absolutely appalling. Although the decor and vibe of the place was nice, the food and service were some of the worst I have ever had. My family and I's meal were all wrong, cold, and 30 minutes late. The cheese tasted fake and the meat was chewy and disgusting. They charged one member of my party for an extra taco he did not order. The waitress was surely incompetent and took forever to bring out our correct meals. She also had quite an attitude when we asked her to fix the bill when she made mistakes. Tres is a local icon (of course.) they are well known for their outstanding food and atmosphere. Tres is one of my favorites. Nothing new here. They rock. I want to specifically praise the GM Mathew for personally providing exceptional service to me in two separate occasions. As a business owner/manager; I'm always in a rush. I hardly have time to eat lunch. As the story goes; In my usual rush, I came in and sat at the bar so that I could get immediate seating and service. A manager noticed that I was not getting served quickly and he walked around the bar and took my order an expedited the whole event. He was very graceful about it and would not except any compliments. I doubt the bartender even knew what happened. At this time I did not even know who this guy is. I later discovered it is the GM Mathew. My next time in I called ahead of time to order to place my order so that I didn't have to wait. This is a trick I use with some local restaurants and I was not sure if it would fly at a busy place like Tres hombres. The hostess routed my call to a server who informed me that this is not something they do however proceeded to take my order and let me know it will be waiting at the taco bar. Once I found parking and walked over to tres I discovered my food and drink ready to go at the taco bar as promised. As I sat down very pleased; I asked the taco bar chef who the guy is, who took my call (Mathew) is and he informed me that that's the general manager. I was beyond happy to have my food ready and waiting. I feel like this is over and beyond service that most restaurants could not handle. I want to thank Mathew and Tres Hombres for providing our community with an outstanding iconic restaurant with amazing staff who can handle even the most fickle customer like myself. Loved that they have veggie and GF options, but the staff needs major work. We were seated at a dirty table and waited and waited. The table next to us got seated, cleaned, and drinks while we waited some more for cleaning or even a greeting. The place was packed on a Friday night with big events in town so we tried to be patient, but tables on both sides that came after us getting multiple assistance while we got 0 isn't cool. The food was good, beans had lots of flavor and the Margs are tasty (we had Pomegranate, Peach, and Mango). The Peach is pretty weak flavored so we doubted actually receiving peach, but eventually tasted it. The cheese enchiladas are super small, but overall big meal portions were a bonus and the chips and salsa were a welcome snack since the wait was long crowded like that. It took 45min for a humble bowl of guac... It's a big place right downtown steps off the University and has indoor and outdoor seating. Street parking was a nightmare so maybe walk over while you shop. Our waitress, when we finally got one, was very sweet and tried her best to help. read more

Chips & salsa came quickly and that's where the good ended. It took quite some time for our waitress to arrive. She got our order for drinks & food. 1 margarita & two sodas. They never came. Not until food. We were unable to get her attention because she couldn't stop complaining about another table & how they complained. She followed the host like a puppy and neglected multiple tables. Some other wait staff brought our food which was eh and it was at that point we got to ask for our missing drinks. The blended marg was liquid as we watched it sit there for 20 minutes. We never got water or beverage refills. We never got asked about food. And didn't see our waitress again until it was bill time. $95 lunch you expect a refill, a check in, some napkins!? We used to love Tres. Sadly the handful of poor service experiences has resulted in us no longer frequenting this establishment. Your wait staff sets the tone for the entire visit. Rather than pace around and loudly complain about other patrons, please encourage them to focus on the other tables that are trying to have positive experience. Tre Hombres is our go to place for lunch or a fun dinner. We love bringing our out of town friends here and relaxing outside and watching the world go by. Dining inside is a bit noisy at times, but when we do eat indoors, we like sitting at the short-ordee grill, chatting with the chef, and getting the freshest food ever. Only negative is to be careful during lunch hour, if we are pressed for time, as they can be a bit slow. Otherwise, no complaints. read more
