Tre Hombres is our go to place for lunch or a fun dinner. We love bringing our out of town friends here and relaxing outside and watching the world go by. Dining inside is a bit noisy at times, but when we do eat indoors, we like sitting at the short-ordee grill, chatting with the chef, and getting the freshest food ever. Only negative is to be careful during lunch hour, if we are pressed for time, as they can be a bit slow. Otherwise, no complaints. read more

Not impressed at all. The hostess was rude and seemed annoyed when we asked for a larger table to sit at. The service was horribly slow. It should not take almost an hour for simple lunch items like quesadillas and salads. The ur server was alright. One of the main issues was that she refused to split our check as we requested before ordering. She claimed that she couldn't, which is untrue. The truth is that she didn't want to and/or found it inconvenient. However she assured us that she could make sure we would be ale to pay our portions as we needed. She requested that those who paid by cc simply write the amount to charge the card and that's how she'd run it. So I added my meal, tax, and a tip. But surprise! She ran my card for the amount specified and then some. We were in a hurry so I didn't complain. But it is bad business practice and just plain shady. On a positive note, the tortila chips were good - although they are pretty hard to mess up. And my fajita salad was good. However, the overall experience was disappointing. I won't return. read more

Used to be great, but now has food quality issues. 5 years ago, this was my go-to place for Mexican food. The restaurant, patio, and staff are nice, but the major thing which matters is not good--the food. There has been a drastic difference. The overall quality in the meats used, and the ingredients have led to most dishes being tasteless and leaving something to be desired. The prices of the food do not reflect the quality, rather they reflect the location and novelty of a downtown venue. I speculate, that 5 years ago a change in ownership, management, or something along those lines have led to the decline. Perhaps even an owner who was looking to cut costs. So disappointed. We came on Mothers Day just a few minutes after they opened. We waited while the host ran silverware out and after 5 or so minutes were taken to our table. Chips & salsa came quickly and that's where the good ended. It took quite some time for our waitress to arrive. She got our order for drinks & food. 1 margarita & two sodas. They never came. Not until food. We were unable to get her attention because she couldn't stop complaining about another table & how they complained. She followed the host like a puppy and neglected multiple tables. Some other wait staff brought our food which was eh and it was at that point we got to ask for our missing drinks. The blended marg was liquid as we watched it sit there for 20 minutes. We never got water or beverage refills. We never got asked about food. And didn't see our waitress again until it was bill time. $95 lunch you expect a refill, a check in, some napkins!? We used to love Tres. Sadly the handful of poor service experiences has resulted in us no longer frequenting this establishment. Your wait staff sets the tone for the entire visit. Rather than pace around and loudly complain about other patrons, please encourage them to focus on the other tables that are trying to have positive experience. Funny thing is, I usually read Yelp reviews prior to going to a restaurant or even ordering but I failed to this time!!!!! I ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos!! And was very disappointed! I like to see what I eating, the fish was chopped up so finely it could have been tuna from a can?? Next time I will read my fellow Yelpers reviews 1st. My bad! My husband was not fond of his quesadilla either. But The service was great! We came on a Sunday with my parents and kids but I think this place would be much better in the evenings and for drinks! Tres = YUMMMMMM! I was in Chico visiting my best friend this past week and made 2 visits to Tres Hombres within the last few days. Chips and Salsa (5), delicious. Fresh warm chips and perfectly spicy salsa. Key Lime Margarita (5) TO. DIE. FOR. El Rey Quesadilla (5) My favorite! Chicken Chipotle (4/4.5) Carnitas and Shrimp Fajitas (3) Carnitas were a bit oily and lacking flavor. Shrimp were cooked well but just average tasting. The service was good both times we went, food came out a little slowly but didn't mind since we were catching up. Tres Hombres food is phenomenal. I've been here three times, though I'd give them a few chances, and was disappointed. Each time I have come here the service was slow, staff rarely came to check on you or to refill your drinks. The food was either cold or a bit soggy. The food was also not very tasteful, it was very bland over all there are better places to eat then here! Ah, Tres Hombres. I hadn't eaten there since the 90's when I was a college student at Chico State... I don't recall eating there often back in the day, and looking at the menu I remembered why. The dinner entrees are up there at ~ $15 bucks a whack. My gal got the quesadillas, which were fantastic. I got a chili relleno, which was pretty OK - nothing to write home about. Went to the restaurant last night before the comedy show at Chico State. Born in raised in Chico. The food was terrible. I had the beef enchiladas. Meat was so chewy that I didn't eat it. The rice and beans not hot, just warm. I told the waitress. Never got a response. The only item that was good was the drink from the bar. Sad because I was going to include them in my restaurant review column. I think they are just trying to make a buck off the college kids. The Bartenders here ROCK! Shane, Nick & Spenser really made our experience one to remember and we will absolutely be back. As a matter of fact we had dinner at Tres Hombres twice this past weekend and ate at the bar both time because we loved the service so much. The drinks went down way to easy and the food was solid. I had an issue with one of my tacos on Friday night and they removed it from the bill without me ever asking. Now that's good customer service. We had dinner on Friday and came back for a late lunch on Saturday after we attend the "Choose Chico" event. My favorite was the Tostada Grande w/shrimp. The shrimp were large and cooked perfectly. My hubby enjoyed the carnitas and chicken tacos and our daughter's favorite was the chicken enchilada. Our daughter will be transferring to Chico in August so when we come visit this will absolutely be our family dinner spot. Save our spots at the end of the bar guys! read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. I used to like coming to Tres and would often recommend it to friends and family. I don't know what's happened but I feel that in the past 2 or 3 years the quality of the food at Tres Hombres has really gone downhill. About a month ago I went to dinner with my wife and ordered a combination plater (I believe taco, enchilada, and tamale) and it was SO bland. I mean minimal flavor. I don't know if they're sourcing cheaper meat or if they're not bothering to season it with fresh spices but it was flavorless. And this wasn't the first incident. I'd had similar experiences in the past. I'd suggest that they do some quality control and actually taste their own food because at this point I don't want to eat it nor will I recommend that any of my friends/family do so until I've heard that something has been changed. I will say that their service is very friendly. I always feel well tended by the waiters. The chips and salsa are always topped off and the service is prompt. The environment is good. I have given them 2 stars for a valid reason. I took my family into lunch (no reservation) and had to wait about 30 minutes no problem no reservation. Love the ambiance but the servers are another matter. First, on busy Saturday they were short at least 2 people with apparently no backup, servers did not inform my family the charges for guacamole serving $10/order to eat potatoes chips. Since they were short of help (servers) it took a long time to get our drinks and then an added wait to get our food order which was mixed up with someone else's order. It would seem the managers where not on their game regarding personnel which is why this restaurant gets a mediocre review. Get yourself a manager that knows what the hell he's doing instead of some wannabee that sold the owner a bill of bad goods. We will wait 6 months before we come back and try again assuming they learn from their mistakes. read more

We cook better food at home . If we Are shopping downtown and get hungry , this is a convenient spot to have chips and salsa , three margaritas , and some food. . The food is mediocre. Tres Hombres was always one of the best spots in Chico. The food and the ambiance​ were excellent. Every time I went to Chico, I always would go there with friends​. I don't know what has happened to this place, but the last time we went there, it was a complete turn-off​. The service was dreadful: We had to wait for food for a long time and then it came almost cold. Wating for drinks took about 30 min also. I ​have to add that the waiter was nice, but looked too busy. The food came on hot plates but was cold. We had to ask to reheat it. Two of my friends​ had beef fajitas and were very sick after that. First off, I really give this about 4 1/2 stars. The atmosphere here definitely deserves 5 stars! Great, festive, fun atmosphere and definitely a perfect place for groups and large parties! Also, much cleaner than most other Mexican restaurants and the decor is very nice. The streetside outdoor patio is great on fall and spring days. Great place for dinner or drinks. The margaritas are always fantastic! The food I give 4+ stars. It is always very good and the quality is consistent. I don't give it a 5 only because it's not the best I've ever had, but this is definitely a great choice to go to have good food in a fun, clean environment. The chips and salsa are good. I've ordered the El Rey quesadilla many times. I like this a lot. When I'm in the mood for something more traditional, the combo dinners with rice and beans are very good too. "Aggressively Average Tex-Mex" As a Chico Local for 5+ years I have been Tres more times than I can probably count. Pros: -Outside seating -Solid margaritas (Two sizes: teeny tiny or fish bowl) -The jalapeno bean dip is amazing - albeit ridiculously over priced -Steak Quesadilla is pretty good, Chingalingas are better -Lunch specials are typically more affordable and decent sized Cons: -It is LOUD in here, I mean ridiculously so, sit outside if you want to hear yourself think -The quality is inconsistent, food often sent back or wrong -It's EXPENSIVE, especially for Chico and especially for the quality -Service still needs work, you will often have to ask 3 times for a sauce or for water and most wait staff are too busy flirting to assist you -The WAIT for you food and drinks is ridiculous, it should not take 2+ hours every single time, it might be bearable if you ever saw you waiter to order a second round of drinks while you wait - but this has literally never happened Overall worth a stop for the margs and bean dip for lunch (if you have the time) on a sunny day.. but don't expect much. read more

Then an out of breath server shows up, takes our order like they are trying to escape incoming artillery shelling, then poof, gone for 20-30 minutes. Food comes out, very blah, and once again, no further service. After about 20 minutes after finishing, I had to flag down a busser to get the check. Had dinner there last night and was served by Kelli! The Cadillac Margarita and her service were the highlights of the night. I had a few questions about the menu because of my dietary restrictions, all of which she answered with great detail and patience. When the margarita came out, it was much bigger than I expected - a great deal for the price and the salted rim was done so well! Is it possible to deduct stars? Unfortunately this restaurant deserves zero stars. But since I have to give one - I'll give this one to the lovely hostess who sat us outside. She was wearing a gorgeous mustard-colored dress that no one except for her would have been able to pull off. So here it is, our first visit to Chico and it's a gorgeous summer evening around 80 degrees. We had spotted Tres Hombres earlier in the day and had made a mental note that it would be great to eat dinner outside so we could enjoy the weather and the energy of being in downtown Chico. We entered Tres Hombres and we were impressed by the gorgeous bar - very long and accommodating. But we asked if we could be seated outside, which we were. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. The people across from us actually went into the restaurant and asked if there was anyone available to take their order. We did see what appeared to be the manager at the other end of the patio but when we asked for his help he completely ignored us. Then a bus boy (?) came out to give us chips and he opened the bottom drawer of the outside hostess stand, grabbed a plastic chip basket from the top and scooped it into the chip drawer. Um, is that even sanitary??? Then he CLOSED THE DRAWER WITH HIS FOOT!!! Okay, THAT is absolutely not sanitary. Next, they had salsa bowls also sitting out on top - who knows how many flies had crawled all over them - and he took a bottle of salsa sitting next to the bowls and poured some into the bowl. Shouldn't food (like salsa) that's sitting out in 80+ degree weather be on ice??? Is this safe??? When he brought the chips and salsa over to our table I asked for a glass of water - which I never received. Needless to say, I didn't try the chips or salsa. My hubs tasted one chip and said it tasted rubbery as if it was stale. After 20+ minutes - a very flustered waitress finally emerged from inside the restaurant and took the order from the people sitting across from us. Then she turned and gruffly asked what we wanted. My hubs and I looked up at each other and made that eye contact where no words are necessary - "We need a few more minutes with the menu..." Then we got up and ran like hell!!! What did we learn from this experience? That Tres Hombres doesn't have sanitation standards or good customer service. I would recommend avoiding this establishment. read more

My mom, dad and I showed up at 8pm on 8/5/2020 for dinner on the patio. There were a couple open tables. The hostess didn't greet us and seemed annoyed. I said we had a party of 3. She told us there was a 30 minute wait and that they closed at 9am. There was absolutely nobody waiting. She didn't ask our name and it was obvious that she wasn't going to seat us. My mom said, well then I guess we'll just do a Togo order. We ended up doing a Togo order with a server who was very nice. The hostess came out again about 30 minutes later and said, did you need something? We said we were waiting for our Togo order. She then turned and walked away. She was so rude to us from the beginning. I'm pretty sure we won't be back. I am 50 years old and my parents in their 70s. It was obvious we were the oldest people there. I just moved to town 4 days ago from Southern California for my job. This was my first time venturing out into the city and the first restaurant experience I've had in Chico. It wasn't a good experience and totally felt discriminated against by the hostess for our age. You would think in this day and age that a business would be happy to have any business and would do their best to accommodate anyone and everyone. I'm very disappointed with our experience and will find another Mexican restaurant to spend our money at. This hostess ruined our experience. Moved to Chico a year ago, this was one of the first restaurants we tried, the food was ok. Not authentic Mexican. Drinks were great, large selection of tequila & margarita options. Fast forward 1 year...We've been back a few times, nothing spectacular. Tonight's visit warranted a Yelp review. The food was terrible, dried beans, this is the same meal I've ordered before, the sauce was different. They must have changed the recipe or the cook messed up? I sent my food back, I don't like to do that, but I was not gonna eat it. Our server was nice, wasn't his fault about the food. I would love to give this place 5 stars for the drinks. I had the BEST pineapple margarita, it was excellent, better than the ones I've had in Hawaii! read more

TLDR: Overhyped, decent margaritas, loud. I use to LOVE Tres when I was 21. Hey, who doesn't? The large margaritas could knock you on your butt. I was one of those that loved the El Rey quesadilla, which is not authentic Mexican cuisine. So if you're looking for authentic, go elsewhere. It ain't here. The food is meh and the service is slow. So be prepared to spend an hour and a half or longer here. During lunch when the college kids are gone t can be a bit quicker. We also had our rehearsal dinner here. I didn't pick it. It was too loud and the person we met with was kind of rude. I know they have the new space now, but if that guy is still there, then I still say it isn't worth it. In fact, it's not worth it -- the food is subpar. There are other, better spots in town to host your rehearsal dinner. read more
