Pretty clean, but a bit overpriced. They have some decent selections from time to time, mostly when it comes to Nano set ups.

Dean was awesome he helped us find everything we needed to set up my turtle tank today super knowledgeable and friendly I live all the way out by Palm Springs but I would definitely go here anytime I was in the area. I also picked up a very nice wrasse to go in my saltwater reef they have a huge selection of saltwater fish that all looked very healthy. read more

UPDATE: Since the bad review I posted earlier as a result of the tattooed fish, Tropical Imports has taken steps to correct the situation and will no longer stock these fish. I've been informed that they were misled by their supplier and told that the practice does not harm the fish when in fact it does. I highly respect and commend Tropical Imports for taking ownership of the mistake and taking action to correct it. I will most definitely continue going to them for fish and aquarium supplies as its a great shop with good selection, healthy fish, AND they carry the Fluval Edge that I want! read more

I purchased a royal gramma from this place a few weeks ago and I has been very healthy and is one of my new favorite additions. The store has a pretty good assortment of both fresh and saltwater fish. Prices aren't that bad either. I believe I paid $16 for my gramma which is pretty much the going price. But if it's healthy it makes it all the more worth it. The corals are okay. Overall I had a good experience. I only knocked off a star because I was browsing around for 20 min or so waiting for someone to come help me. Maybe because I was in the back by the saltwater and he simply didn't see me? I went in to Tropical imports to get a few fish and supplies for a small tank I bought for my nephews. The person who helped me was very patient and took the time to answer all my questions as well as make suggestions. Other people working there were also very helpful and attentive. Local fish store as it should be. These guys are nice, knowledgeable, and fair. Will not let you make stupid impulse purchases. Customer comes before business. If you're a frequent buyer, get one of their punch cards and you'll save a lot of money in the long run. The staff is probably the best part of coming to this store. They are very knowledgeable, experienced, and personable, too. I shop from Topanga canyon to monrovia, and Panorama city to LAX, but im glad that this is my local store. From live foods, to frozen/dry, inverts to fish, everything here is healthy, well picked, and very affordable, especially if you compare to most others. 10 stars to this place! read more

This store is ALL about customer service. We live about 20-30 minutes or so from here, but they make it worth the drive. Each of the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, and spend as much time as is needed to answer our questions, show us products, etc. We have been to several fish stores since starting up our new saltwater tank, but none match the level of service that this store offers... I have read on other reviews that the prices may be a little high. I have not compared really. The customer service makes the difference to me. read more

I went to this fish store last night with my boyfriend. We are completely newbies when it comes to fish so we had no clue what we were really looking for. This store has impeccable customer service and lots of helpful information. They don't try to sell you unnecessary products and they help guide you in which fish you purchase. We purchased the Yelp Deal and walked away with $75 worth of inventory for our $50 spent. (We had actually gone over a little in our spending but these nice guys nixed the extra cost and left it at a flat $75.) We will DEFINITELY be coming back here to continue business. These guys have really saved my tank. Also being a newbie, I came in the store hoping to save my sick fishes and they really did it.No matter what I did, I couldn't cycle my tank, and Since Ive been coming here, I haven't lost one fish. Their selection of freshwater fish is quite extensive and and they get new stuff all the time. Their fish is always healthy and disease free. Customer service is quite good if you come in when they aren't super busy like weekends. Often there is only one person getting the fish and bringing up the order (its a small business) . i highly recommend these guys. read more

I just bought a complete fish tank setup here today for about $100. When I got it home I discovered that the plastic lid was cracked. I took it back only a few hours later and tried to get a replacement for the lid and the guy who sold it to me said "we" had inspected it in the store and it was fine. Actually, he had inspected it (set the filter up for me while I looked around the store). I was giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, but now I think he actually knew it was broken when he sold it me, that's why he wouldn't replace it. Hopefully the manufacturer will give me a new one. The staff are kids with no knowledge! The aquariums available are very nice, but way over priced! I would suggest going to Petco before making any purchases here! The owner is the only person that can help you with problems and if he is out of town you're out of luck as I was today! I will never come back here, and wouldn't suggest you do either! I recently got a Goldfish, but know nothing about taking care of the fish. I was having problems with the bowl my fish was in, and didn't know if I was properly taking care of her. I read some other reviews on Yelp and decided I would check out Tropical Imports. They were awesome! Some of their stuff is a few bucks more than other pets stores, but I didn't mind paying a little more for the service I received. Right away I told the man at the front my problems and he took time to explain what he thought was wrong. Then he showed me a small 1 gallon tank and took it out of the box and showed me how everything worked. He told me I didn't have to buy the tank, but he would take it out and show me anyways. Then I was walking around for a minute, and I believe the owner was helping with some tanks, and he stopped and asked if he could help me too. I told him I was looking for some Goldfish, and he walked me around to the different tanks and showed me all the fish. I ended up buying the small 1 gallon tank, and the gentleman not only helped me with the tank, but gave me a little chlorine sample to help with my water and filled up a bag of their fresh water so I could put my fish in it right away when I got home. I was so blown away by the patience, knowledge and selection of this store. I would go back in a second. The quality of their fish, and the wide selection was way better than other fish supply store I have been too! Highly recommended! read more

I've been to this store several times and was pleased by both their saltwater selection and their help. But on this one occasion I went to purchase RO/DI water. After arriving home and beginning to mix my freshly purchased water with my DD H2O Salt(Expensive) something told me to stop an test the TDS of the water. So I did and what was the reading? On average it came in well above 500, yes that's 500 PPM. Anyone who knows about saltwater tanks, knows the RO/DI water should be ZERO prior to mixing. after contacting the store they said oh well come back tomorrow and i'll give you fresh water. NOT taking into consideration that I just WASTED my 5 LBS of my salt mix. And the best they could offer is 15 Gals. Secondly he said that NO ONE has a ZERO READING.... Once again anyone who knows RO/DI water it should read a ZERO. Maybe they need to stop filling it up directly from the faucet and use an RO/DI unit! DISAPPOINTED. read more

First of all, prices: I bitched when I first walked in... But, they WILL work with you. They are more than fair. At first glance, are some items more expensive than Petco? Sure are! Why? Well, part of it's math... The local mom & pop pet shops buy a fraction of what Petco buys... Petco can buy in huge volume direct from manufacturers, on a national level.. They then mark their prices up X%... The distributors also buy in moderate volume direct from manufacturers and sell to the mom & pops whom, in turn, mark their prices up somewhere slightly less than X%. The end result: Petco (A large capitalist monopoly with no regard for the welfare of animals) makes huge profits... The local shops are lucky to make a few bucks here and there and keep their doors open. Now, if this moral dilemma of little consequence to you, and you just want your money's worth... Buy from your local mom & pop, anyway... You are getting free training and consultation every single time you walk in the door. You are getting knowledge and experience handed over to you... Something that does not exist in Petco, Petsmart, Walmart or any other place that employs only minimum-wage kids... If you needed advice on marine invertebrates, would you feel confident about the wealth of experience you are about to be blessed with, as soon as this 17 year-old is done dragging a pallet jack full of cat food across the floor? The extra dollar or two you may spend per month will save you hundreds in the long run, versus the wasted time and money blown on wrong equipment, inappropriate chemicals and, let's not forget, the horribly stressed, underfed, and usually totally incompatible livestock. Which reminds me... Someone mentioned that TROPICAL IMPORTS has a lot of the same fish in different tanks, as if this were a negative. Thank god for that! Other than damsels, gobies and a few other schooling fish, you don't want to house the same species together, at all. In fact, Yellow Tangs are schooling fish... So are Niger Triggers... In the OCEAN. They will eventually kill each other in small systems. If your gripe was that they simply have more than one of the same fish... Well, some are consistent sellers... Many are not consistently available. They are not sitting in a warehouse... So the retailers pick the best specimens as they are available. If this means a Foxface in every tank... So be it. I'm glad we have a selection of the same species... As opposed to finally running into some lone specimen of emaciated, ich-ridden Moorish Idol - And buying it because you're afraid you'll never see one again. As far as equipment and supplies... They stock what sells. Anything else: they will have by Wednesday, without fail... What more do you want? As far as the aquarium decor... That's a funny one. I personally find anything synthetic to be beyond tacky... But, again, they stock what sells... My hypothesis: It's all location and demographic. This is Glendale... Apparently, the same people who like shiny rims on Escalades and wear bedazzled designer jeans and sequined sunglasses, also have a fondness for neon plastic corals, skulls and, yes, sunken ships... (Just my personal observation). TROPICAL IMPORTS is the best local fish store that I have visited in my 25 years in the hobby... If you value a helpful and friendly staff... If you are interested in learning... Or if you want your fishy friends to thrive... Go there. I highly recommend it. Bring cash. It's a great bargaining tool. It actually has more value than plastic because it cuts out the middle-men... Like the bank, merchant accounts processors , credit card companies, IRS and Franchise Tax Board, etc.. The guy at the store (I think his name is Henry) is very knowledgeable and friendly and gave great recommendations on the fish I was interested in and even gave me a great deal on the tank I bought. I visited the store two days ago and they had some interesting things! I love plecos and they had lots of rare ones! I have 20 plecos and now 21 since I bought one from them, prices are good! I bought a L075 pleco about 6inches! Beautiful fish! They also have green pleco, vampire pleco, three beacon pleco, leopard pleco, snowball, king tiger, and one more L075! I would have given them five stars but the store wasn't that clean and other fish didn't seem so healthy! If your looking for plecos check this store out! read more

I was so disappointed.. usually we travel a good 20-30 min to get here every once in a while to get new fish for our tank. Arriving here this morning I was very disappointed with the costumer service and the fish. We wanted to get a school of neon tetrons and they were sick, puss and a bunch of dead fish in the tank. In many tanks it looked like the fish were sick or starving. The costumer service was horrible this Thin Mexican guy was on his cell phone ignoring customers and every time we asked him a question he would ignore us and not answer. His friend came over and started talking to him about girls, money, cars having a conversation completely unprofessional infront of us. I mean save it for when your not at work or when your not helping customers. This employee had no costumer service or interest in fish. You don't want this guy representing your fish store. The whole experience this time was awful plus he charged us over $70 for a school of fish 15 fish, dude you couldn't of given us a discount the owner last time gave us a discount for buying so many fish. Don't go here you'll waste your time, its over priced. We're on our way to pet smart, it's a better option truthfully. read more

I have done business with Tropical Imports for 15 years and have never been disappointed in their service. We have 2 large saltwater tanks and they maintain them weekly. Our service tech is David and he is awesome. David takes a lot of pride in his tanks and really knows a lot about the fish. we have had a few emergencies and David has came to our rescue within one hour. Great Fish store. Parking is a little awkward but they have a beautiful store. They carry tones of fish and the man that helped me was really friendly. I bought some dumbo guppies but they have many more exotic fish for reasonable prices that you could never mind at somewhere like petco. My husband and I were admiring a plumed basilisk lizard. I understand it's kind of rare to find one - it's a Jesus Christ lizard because it walks on water! David offered 20% off, telling us that the lizard needed a good home. We weren't sure, but David sealed the deal by throwing in a large terrarium free of charge! Someone had given it to the store and he explained he wouldn't sell it, anyway. He was really concerned about the lizard getting a good and caring home. He was very passionate and gave excellent advice on care, etc. We have great experiences every time we go to this store. The staff's knowledge of each type of reptile, fish, etc., is extraordinary and they go the extra mile to talk with us and give us invaluable advice. They have helped us set up fish tanks, turtle tanks and now a lizard abode. Thanks again, David!
