No AC, no servers, and nothing for free- True food kitchen was such an expensive and lackluster dinner. Came in with a group and they wouldn't sit us outside because they "don't move" tables. Inside was super hot at 7pm and it took 15 minutes for our waitress to even come to take drink orders. When we asked questions about menu items she told us half of them weren't good which honesty is appreciated but what a bad look if your own server thinks half the food is bad? Drinks came out in waves, even when most of us had no alcohol. My Mediterranean wrap was 17$ with no protein and no satiating side- just a plane leafy salad. My friend asked for a side of ranch and the waitress straight up forgot and then we had to re-remind her...oh and we got charged an extra dollar. Want to make your side kale salad a Caesar? 7$ up charge! My friends medium rare burger came out well done. Waitress was not really attentive either. Went to true food after getting over a stomach bug, as I had was starving but extremely wary of putting the standard greasy take out or resturant food. Knowing from previous experience that TFK was anti inflammatory, I was dead set on the tuna poke bowl (no black rice, sub salad), to ease my gut back into shape. I wasshocked when the server asked for the protein, " sure, three, six or nine ounces?" I ordered the nine, with one of the ounces being shrimp (please don't judge me), thinking I would take it home anti it would last a couple of days. I stop by True Food frequently when I am in the area. The food is good, I typically feel satisfied and ready to get back to work after lunch. I tried the apple lemonade from the winter menu, very refreshing and delicious. I also love their squash pie. I would've never ordered this but our server highly recommended it. For my entree, I love the lasagna bolognese and I add on addition chicken (blackened). It's the perfect portion size. The service is normally really good and the food is always fresh. We ordered the butternut squash pizza (garlic puree, organic kale, roasted butternut squash, caramelized onion, with a house-made vegan almond ricotta and OMG this was delicious. What amazed me the most was that it was vegan and did not bother my stomach at all! The toppings all complimented each other and each bite was great. We also ordered the ancient grains bowl (miso sesame glazed sweet potato, onions, snap peas, portobello mushrooms, avocado, help seed, cilantro pumpkin seed pesto) with salmon on top. We tried the fries at $12 and the tenders $18, they're fine, the sauces are good, but knowing I could buy a bag of fries and tenders at the store and cook them at a fraction of the price made me feel like I ordered the wrong items. I came here back in November to meet a friend for dinner. We wanted to go here for healthier options. I got the ancient grains bowl with tofu. While it was excellent, even with the tofu add-on, I was still so hungry. Coincidentally, I saw on the DC Vegans Facebook group that someone else ate here on the same day and had the same complaint.! I went to Jammin Java for a concert afterwards and ended up having to order fries there. So much for trying to eat a bit better! When we arrived, even though I printed out my Open Table reservation confirmation, they spent ten minutes looking for it, couldn't find it and put us down as walk-ins. The place was half empty on a Friday night. The server was nice but the drinks and food took forever. Getting four glasses of wine took 20 minutes. They brought half of our party's meals about 20-25 minutes after ordering, they the other half 15 minutes later. So awkward, and 40 minutes is a long time to wait for a sandwich wrap! That's just incompetent restaurant management. My family thought their food was good or ok, but my Thai peanut noodles were a lump of sticky, brown glop with way too much sauce and overcooked noodles. There were virtually no vegetables, and it was really just too salty and unpleasant to eat. I took a few bites and couldn't eat any more. The server saw I didn't eat much and that I didn't want to take the food home, but never asked if my food was ok. Dinner for 5 with five glasses of wine was $240 including tip. The food at True Food is just not as fresh or interesting as it once was. It's too bad. read more

This would be 4 or 5 stars but I have had issues with service more than once. Last time it happened, a manager came out and was very apologetic and offered us a free dessert. Being accustomed to Asian dumplings I was hesitant, but these were surprisingly delicious!!! Both dishes complemented each other well. The entrees were filling, delicious, and didn't leave us disgustingly full. The drinks were also health conscious! Not sure what happened. I have been several times previously, but it has been a while. We were seated, looked at our menus, set them aside, waited and waited and waited..... No one came to our table. Another server cleared the dishes near ours didn't acknowlege us and disappeared. The two hostesses were in eye shot and were completely disinterested. As we left, no one seemed to care, including us : - ) , since neither of us saw anything too exciting on the menu. Therefore, I wasnt too busted up that no one chased after us or found us to be desirable customers : - / On the bright side, we had a really good dinner at WHINO just upstairs (Please feel free to see that review). Came here for brunch Sunday morning and it was packed outside! However, there was ample seating inside with a lot of space during these pandemic times. It's a very cozy atmosphere near Ballston Quarters which I liked. Not going to lie, I didn't realize this place was considered a "healthy" restaurant with vegetarian and vegan options when I reserved; I typically don't go to these types of restaurants because I'm so used to eating meat almost every day. However, I didn't even realize the dishes I ordered and ate were all vegetarian based - yet I was really happy with portions and taste of all of them! My friend got the hummus as a starter to share and it was bigger than we expected. The hummus was great with the pita given with it, but the cheese and veggies in the center made the hummus even tastier. Definitely more than what it seems, so we had troubles finishing it! I got the seasonal Spinach & Mushroom pizza as an entrée and it was so good! The drops of cheese along with the cooked mushroom was delicious. The spinach was great on the pizza too. There were hints of different flavours underneath the mushroom and spinach which I loved. The pizza definitely seems thin when you hold it, but it's definitely filling when you try to eat the whole thing. I definitely recommend trying the pizza out before it leaves the seasonal menu. My friends really enjoyed their dishes as well - both the burgers and chicken dishes were great with the vegetable sides that came with it. The staff are nice and attentive, friendly too. Cauliflower was so good, especially the sauce, a bit sweet with sour; we added beef into our salad, the beef was juicy and tender, all the green were fresh; grains bowl was even more delicious. Our first dine-in outdoors since March 2020 and we were fortunate that my sons visiting from New York picked True Food Kitchen in Arlington. After supporting so many pick-ups from local restaurants, many of them OK, True Kitchen reminded me of what true excellence in customer service, food quality which is both healthy and tasty, and overall ambiance is, especially during this difficult time period. Having eaten here over a year ago with relatives, indoor when it was jammed and we enjoyed lunch, to (just before the pandemic became official) their Fairfax location, was another really good experience, I was a bit nervous with this first dining experience. There was absolutely no need and we were in the very capable hands of GM Anne Davis and Sarah our server and we couldn't have had a better experience! First with reservations...easy to make. Ahead of time I requested outside and GM Anne Davis had a table that gave us shade as soon as we arrived . The resultant is fully complaint with all social distance requirements but does it in such a pleasant but safe way that it was quick to be comfortable . The location is on the ground of Ballston Mall and it was no issue finding street parking. We experienced great service from several employees, but our main server was Sarah who explained everything very clearly, gave awesome recommendations and stayed connected with our table (and others) throughout. We met several other staff and in particular Anne helped Sarah out and I passed on our thanks for a great experience. Now to food. In this environment, a menu is provided, and customers are encouraged to write in requests with any additional specifics. Worked very well as Sarah went over everything. For appetizers we ordered both the avocado toast and brunch avocado toast. Both disappeared really fast. Main course. Grass fed burgers were excellent and the mushrooms a great touch. My son requested some burger sauce and Sarah was about to fly next door until we stopped her. What service!!!. Excellent burgers. The spaghetti casserole came with a beef patty, mozzarella and shrimp add ons. Again excellent. I had the shrimp tacos which was great. For dessert Sarah and Anne recommended a great menu and we selected the quinoa brownie sundae and key lime mousse. Again excellent. There was limited folks seating inside and with the wonderful weather today it was easy to understand why everyone wanted to it outdoors.
