The way this place is laid out is great, extremely well thought out. The host stand is smack center in a patio / open kitchen style layout and guests are distributed accordingly. The food is savory, diligently prepared, strong fresh clean ingredients and a nice array of focused dishes with a supportive and targeted wine menu. The food is satisfying, creative, tasty and the menu - honestly designed. Very professionally thought through and the entire machine here is clearly the work of a larger, well-funded corporate entity. The waitstaff - pretty good. As much as one can expect from a higher volume establishment plopped down near the heart of one of the more touristy locales in Pasadena. Mostly mildly friendly, easily distracted millennials who flit back and forth, but in the four times we've been here, one never really feels they are truly focused on you. Kinda A.D.D. Food is dropped, wine is dropped and then...attention is dropped. For some reason we have always been seated in the cavernous room directly to one's left upon entering the restaurant. It's always packed with either clusters of loud sloppy families, loud birthday parties, loud bachelorette parties, loud couples, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud and loud. Screaming children with caravans of strollers, packs of wine-slurping mommies who are loud loud loud and loud. The volume in this room is deafening and seems to be quite different than the rest of the establishment. I even asked one time to put us somewhere not so loud. And they put us in this room again. Anyway. They have valet parking in the back and all in all, a positive experience. If the waitstaff gave more consistent focus to the patrons and they redesigned the "ROOM OF LOUD" - that would be areas where they could improve. read more

Have visited the Santa Monica and Pasadena locations a few times, they have some not-so-boring and tasty healthy dishes and drinks. Farmers Market Crudités(Santa Monica has better varieties of veggies and the portion is bigger too, see pictures), Edamame Dumplings, Herb Hummus, Spicy Panang Curry Bowl (Pasadena's is a little blend and watery and the rice is served on the side), Grass-fed Burger, and Steak Tacos are all pretty good. The Chia Seed Pudding served at the Pasadena location comes with a thick layer of caramel topping which is just way too sweet, I like the one at the Santa Monica better which has banana and toasted coconut on the top. Wish it was bigger because it was so good and it was a kind of small portion. But perfect size appetizer for two people. The lasagna Bolognese was tasty and a little spicy. True Food is one of my favorite restaurants! ThAncient Grains Bowley have plenty of outdoor seating so everyone can be a safe distance apart. Hostesses Natalie and Sarah are very friendly and work hard to get everyone seated in a timely manner. Waiter Alex is always on it and is helpful with recommendations if you're looking for something new to try. He recommended the edamame dumplings and they are now my go to starter. Bomb food. Their food tastes so damn good but I wish their portions were a little larger. The teriyaki bowl is very tasty, as well is the edamame dumplings. A disappointing service experience and one very unprofessional se ever who literally made a face at me (curly dishwater blond pulled back) while I was speaking to my server and manager. The restaurant was not busy. I waited way to long ( no problem I told my server). All the food came at once after I had to ask for every item from water soup to entry. I love everything about this place. Food quality and service are both exceptional. I always sit at the bar, and while I am sure all their staff members are friendly and amazing, the bar staff are especially delightful. One of my favorite restaurants. It has it all. The atmosphere, causal, sunny, open, elegant and chill. It's like a scene from a movie. The food is amazing. Fresh and healthy. We were first timers today. First and foremost, doggy friendly is a plus. Staff was super friendly to all of us and my dog immediately received water. While we waited for our food the server brought over some of their specialty drinks for us to sample. That was very since and we did like both so we'll order next time. We ordered a kids pizza, the ahi tuna salad, and pan roasted chicken. All our plates were cleaned. No fuss, nice and clean, great food, nice staff, clean bathroom, and everything was yummy. Some of the best hikes are in Pasadena/ Altadena (unless you plan on going, stay home they're crowded enough), and every time we go I get "dragged" to this place. Gladly I drive and wait to bust a blood vessel looking for parking. Probably the worst part of it. It's always busy due to its consistency, I have gone a few times and each time the food was good, and so was the service. Hang in there when going or plan ahead because it gets busy. The patio restaurant has a lot of seating from bar, table, high top to the patio/ entrance that splits the restaurant in half. The decor is basic IKEA-esc, my mate and I wanted to partake in their ahi sliders and seasonal ingredient salad, which were both off the menu. She instead had a different health nut pick - kale cobb salad with shrimp, which was better than my ancient grains bowl (I added a fried egg cause... brunch) my food was fine, came out on time, and was a warm meal. The squash really saves the attempt of getting away with snap peas that don't mix well. Will do again, during a slow hour and will opt for a different meal. Nothing amazing about the place. I was intrigued by the choices that this place offered but I ended up getting the spaghetti squash casserole which was made with zucchinis and it was SO GOOD. My friend got the seared albacore tuna salad and the dressing for it was amazing. I'm not a salad person but I would definitely order that the next time I go there. I saw a lot of people around me eating it so it's definitely a popular choice. They have a lot of options for drinks that are alcoholic and non-alcoholic. My throat has been feeling a little weird so I chose the ginger tulsi tea and my friend got a grapefruit cocktail I believe. Both were really good, however, they're kind of pricey. But the tea did help my throat a bit! Overall, I really like all the decor here and the greenery everywhere. The staff were very welcoming and energetic. I've been here twice now. It has a great atmosphere, you can sit outside or inside, plus they have a small bar you can sit at as well. Each time i have come, everyone in the party gets something different so that we can try all that they have to offer. I swear, everything here (so far) tastes amazing, and it's healthy! When i looked at the portion sizes of what we were eating, plus what was in each plate, I was slightly skeptical that it would fill me up (i was the smallest guy in the party of 3, weighing 165lbs, the other two being over 200 lbs), but we all left full! I came here with my brother and cousins before the Beyoncé concert. I was able to get reservations right away and was seated right away! The vibe of the restaurant is super cute and outdoorsy. It does get a little chilly at night, so make sure to take a jacket! Everything was super yummy. I had gotten a noodle salad which had some mangos in them. It was all very fresh tasting. Everything I've come to expect from an FRC restaurant: friendly and upbeat atmosphere, A- food (always good but rarely exceptional), and well-trained servers. We sat on the patio for weekend brunch (with a dog, which they are happy to accommodate on the patio). One person ordered the smashed avocado toast, another got the huevos rancheros and I went with the breakfast sandwich. Everything was tasty (we all tried everything and each person had a different favorite, but everything was solid). Between the three of us we also tried two of the NA beverages (again, good, not cloyingly sweet, but not super memorable either) and a mimosa (small, especially for $11, but tasty). Like other Fox restaurants (and I know, TFK is leaving the Fox group soon), I'll keep this in the rotation when I'm in the area mostly because of the reliability. I just ate there this afternoon and I absolutely hated their new policies and procedures that they implemented this week. It's pretty much self checkout at its finest. Step 1) You scan the QR code on your table. Step 2) You order the food YOURSELF through your phone. Step 3) A human being brings your food out to you (This might possibly be changed to a robot bringing out your food later on some time down the line who knows). Step 4) You pull up your own check online YOURSELF through your phone and pay for the bill including tip. The human aspect of it all and the experience of eating out and the service associated with eating out is completely taken away! I felt so cheated and deceived when paying. I felt I should be paying half the tip to the server and half the tip to myself for doing such a good job in putting my own order in! Don't get me wrong, my server Annie did a great job with the current situation. Justin the manager answered my concerns but I feel that the corporate head somewhere sitting behind a desk who made this corporate decision completely failed. True Food Kitchen should completely rethink about this model that they have created with their own decision making. And to say that it's for the safety of everyone is so BS because then you are telling me that the operation you were running previously last week or the many weeks before wasn't safe in your opinion but you still did it anyway. If this is the stance that True Food Kitchen is going to take then just don't do sit down dining. Just do only to go orders like how you were doing in the Spring. This really takes away from the experience of sit down dining. The food is great - just bring back the service that we all rely on in the dining/hospitality industry!!! read more

TFK does a good job of giving you what you came here for. If you wanted greasy sliders and fries you wouldn't be here. Healthy food can disappoint, but none of that here. Delicious squash and poblano soup, miso ramen bowl and Panang curry bowl, both with tofu. Great flavors, nice servings. Flourless chocolate cake a nice finish. Also very pleasant and efficient service, and comfortable, attractive dining area. This star is for quality of service: We experienced an unbelievably long wait time when ordering to go dishes. Truly ridiculous. We finally asked someone to check with the kitchen and they came with our food. Which leads me to believe that it's not the kitchen's fault but rather the restaurant's service. Heading home to eat a cold meal, that was probably sitting there for 30 minutes, adds a rather bitter taste in my mouth. I will return- as I believe we all have off days and deserve second chances - so expect an updated review in months to come. read more

Emily was fantastic and sweet, but not in a fake way! The hostess staff was also very kind, throwing compliments left and right and smiling away. A very different experience than my first trip (which I was so taken back by rudeness that I walked out). My friend is gluten free and they can accommodate anything AND had amazing dishes already prepared that way. A lot of vegan options too so this is awesome for a group of mixed eaters! The foods are all natural and fresh, and clearly all homemade. Would definitely be back. It is on the pricier side, but hey, it's Pasadena, and sometimes you have to spend a little extra to not get the chemicals found in pretty much everything else.
