We normally love this place. The food is good as well as being consistent. We usually make a special trip from Montrose to eat here. However, this time the wait for our food was extremely long. There was yelling going on in the kitchen as well as crashing of dishes to the floor. Many of the patrons that were seated after us were served dinner before us and actually paid their bill and departed. When asked about the delay the waitress stated that they had opened the upstairs searing and that had put on extra strain on the Kitchen. But we were seated before the upstairs was opened. It was Sunday and six of us jeepers wanted a nice breakfast. True grit delivered! They didn't open until 9am, but worth the wait. Everyone really enjoyed the food. Huevos like you have never had before. Bisquits and gravy looked mighty tasty too! Mimosa ' s and Bloody Mary's topped it all off. Service was amazing! WOW. We stopped here because it looked really busy and it had a roof top deck. Walked in the door and were immediately offered a table or a spot at the PACKED bar. Bar it was. Service was top notch. Ordered the buffalo burger with our choice of toppings. 1/2 pounder so we opted to split it. Ordered it Med / rare . Came closer to rare. Not too bad but not perfect. VERY tasty though. Their pork green chili was one of the best I've had. Love green chili and ALWAYS try what is available. If you are into Green, it's a must have. Overall we'd give this place a fat four stars. Don't come here expecting real John Wayne memorabilia. It's just a bunch of posters of John Wayne. Very much a let down. Although parts of the movie True Grit was shot in this town, not much to see. Go to the courthouse in Ouray for that. As far as the food, it was hit-or-miss for us. The wife had the salmon and it was superb. I had the French Dip and it just plain sucked. We came here three nights in a row. I must be a slow learner. The first night we had a drink at the bar only. It was fine. We came back the next night for "burger night," and the waitress forgot to turn in our order. After an hour and no burgers, we began to realize something was wrong. She did her best to make it right, but she admitted that she forgot to turn in our order. So, we said to ourselves, "Waitress error--it happens." All was forgiven. Then, we went in on the third night because I didn't want anymore camp out food. I ordered a medium steak, and my boyfriend ordered a big salad. The salad was fine, but the steak was gray and over done. I send it back, and the next one is equally over done. I ask for the manager, and it's the waitress from the previous night! She takes care of it, in a manner of speaking. But I finally get my steak after my boyfriend has finished his dinner. Not nice! True Grit, the movie, was mediocre at best. Decent bar food. I had chicken strips and potato salad. My boyfriend had a burger and a side of pork green chili stew. Everything tasted good and seemed fresh. The batter on my chicken was interesting which I attribute to the menu blurb about being gluten-free. The decor was nice. My husband and I went to Ridgeway/Telluride for our honeymoon. We were surprised that all of the restaurants weren't open all year round. We ended up going to the True Grit Cafe several times. It was delicious and the staff was always delightful. Our first night in town my husband was sick, so I asked for their recommendation on soup. They gave us a delicious soup and even offered to bring it out to our car. We ate inside one day for lunch and had the pleasure of eating with the owner. Everything we tried was wonderful and we can't wait to go back the next time we are in Ridgeway! read more

A solidly okay place. Nothing special. We went for lunch on a weekday. Service was slow, but they might have been shortstaffed that day. I had chili cheese fries and husband had the buffalo wrap. He enjoyed his, which was the redeeming factor to make this 3 stars and not 2. Beef chili was pretty bland like it was missing spices, but addimg some hot sauce made it better. Their local hot sauce was lacking though. Good amount of kick, but not a great flavor. With slow service and "eh" food I wouldn't return. This restaurant has great atmosphere and a ton of John Wayne memorabilia. We stopped here for dinner on our way back from Telluride and were very pleased at how quickly we were seated, considering we were a party of eight. My wife and I split the turkey reuben and it was plenty. The food was good and the service was excellent. The prices are geared for tourists but the portions are big. Gave it a try based on other reviews when visiting Ridgway. The upstairs patio location is great, overlooking the park. However, when we walked in, we were brought upstairs where the hostess then yelled to one of the servers "need a table for 4." She then left us there. We were then pointed to a table inside, when we specifically requested outside, and told "this is the only table for 4." Then the server disappeared. We saw tables open outside and seated ourselves. We only ordered appetizers and drinks, all of which took way too long to arrive, about 10 minutes for the drink and 35 minutes for the food. The drink was fine, but the nachos were terrible. They were cold, Liquid cheese, all chips were soggy, barley any meat, and they charged an extra $2.50 for sour cream, which was in 2 packets thrown on the side of the nachos. Our server also rarely checked back and gave no updates on where our food was. I would not return or recommend to anyone else. read more
