I'm only giving this place two stars because frankly, the food was good, but literally the worst service we've ever had! We got seated and we actually made reservations three days prior, but there is no reason to get our waters 30 minutes after being seated! And we only got water because we asked for it literally four times. We also found it odd that their placemats were literally white paper.... and then we ordered several appetizers, but they all came out after we got our main meal. Our main meals also came in increments of 5 to 10 minutes and so by the time, one of our friends finished their food, the other one was barely getting their food. There's a new item on the menu: Phá Lấu (Vietnamese menudo). This is a tricky dish to get right since it's made with beef offal. I can confidently say it's the best in California since having to try almost every places have that on the menu from Sac to San Jose to SoCal. The tamarind sauce is perfect, tangy and flavorful. It usually comes with bread for dipping. However, I like mine with instant noodles, so I got it to-go to add at home. Tip: ask for extra Vietnamese coriander, it makes it even better. Came here at 8:59 p.m. for a late night dinner after Great America and there were one party ahead of us on the wait list. We were told it would be about 10 minutes since a party was checking out soon. 15 mins later, we were told it would be another 10 mins wait for a table of 4 for us. I had read ahead that service can be slow and seeing how long it took to get seated when we saw two parties leave ahead and the tables were not cleaned right away, I hope the restaurant can be more efficient with the table clean up and set up to seat customers more quickly. This place blew up for a bit on my feed and I saw a couple videos on it. I came to Yelp to get an opinion but it was so contradictory to the videos that I had to come see for myself. The place was decorated nicely and the music was calming. However it was just that. The moment we walked in, there were only two-three tables seated but there were dirty dishes everywhere. I had assumed they just had a rush so they didn't have time to clean but I got there around 4pm in the afternoon and it stayed that way the entire duration I was there. Their service was incredibly slow. We didn't get our waters until 20mins after asking for it. Food came out around 10 mins after that but the vermicelli came first. 5-10 mins later, the banh khot came out and then my banh canh followed. My friend literally just sat there as his food got cold while waiting for mine to come out. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. We had the banh khot, bun thit nuong, and banh canh cua. The banh khot was great, nice coconuty flavor, crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The banh canh was lacking in that seafood/crab flavor I was looking for, tbh it tasted a bit bland. I liked the noodles tho, had a good chew and bounce to them. We ordered a side of the Chinese donuts to dip into the soup and it was light and fluffy with a crispy exterior. The thit nuong was good too, nice smoky flavor that left the noodles smoky. However we wish there was more meat to it. Solid Vietnamese spot in Milpitas! We ordered the banh canh cua (Vietnamese crab udon), which seems to be their most popular dish, as well as cha gio (egg rolls) and banh xeo (crepe). Everything was quite delicious and really hit the spot on a cold rainy day. The udon had the perfect texture with a bit of bounce. I prefer my banh canh broth to be a little thicker so I can slurp up more with each bite of noodle, but this broth was still very good and packed with umami. The cha gio was excellent and I would definitely order them again! The banh xeo was also good but not a huge standout in my opinion. We would definitely come back here again! The restaurant is a little small but they have a lot of tables. The only downside is they seem a little short staffed as there were a few available tables but they were not being cleared out right away, so there was a little bit of a wait. What I noticed is that they weren't bussing the tables and they weren't being cleared or cleaned. I don't know if it was an off day or they were short staffed. Trường Thanh is my new favorite spot to go to whenever I am craving some banh canh cua. For those not in the know, BCC is a thick soup filled with Vietnamese udon, crab chunks, shrimp, sliced pork, and the usual accoutrements that come with pho. It's absolutely packed with crabby flavor and is great on a cold day. At Truong Thanh they pack it with large crab chunks and the seafood flavor permeates through - you can even get it with a crispy Chinese donut (youtiao) that is great for dipping. I did it, I came back for the bánh canh cua! It definitely hit, and delivered exactly the comfort I was craving. The flavor was just as good as I remembered, rich and savory with plenty of depth. We ordered a large bowl to share along with bánh khọt and bánh hỏi thịt nướng, and every dish was delicious. We finished everything... to my surprise. The bánh khọt were crisp on the outside with a light, airy interior, and the bánh hỏi thịt nướng was well-balanced with tender grilled pork and fresh herbs. As for the bánh canh cua, the broth was flavorful but clearly thickened with a generous amount of cornstarch, giving it a noticeably gelatinous consistency rather than a more traditional, brothy texture. So I decided to invite my friend and dad to this place. Finally tried the banh canh and the khot here. My dad and friend both got the bun rieu. I am a bit conflicted on how to leave this review. So I'll break it down into sections. Ambiance: Cute. Quiet. Clean. Music was at the prefect volume, lighting was prefect for dinner time. Food: We had Bun Bo Hue, Hu tiêu, pho, banh khot. The pho, was ok. It was missing a bit of the flavor. The noodles were good and meat quality was fresh. My mother thought her Hu Tieu was missing flavor, it was super bland. My brother's bun bo hue was also bland and missing flavor, he did like the fact that the noodles were soft. The banh khot was a little bit different from what I am use to. It wasn't not muffin like consistency. It reminded me of banh it ram. Where its crispy in the bottom and gooey on top. So I wasn't sure how to feel about this dish. Overall flavors were just basic Service: this is where I'm conflicted because the service was not awful, but it wasn't great. The food came in a timely manner, which was great. However, I noticed that unless you're an "influencer" you aren't going to get top service. When we came in, about 15 mins later a "influencer" came in with friends.... Right away they were told about the specialties, the history of the restaurant, recommendation and special "offers" if they get a good honest review on their platform. Went with my brother and his gf to eat here a couple days ago. The food looked better than it tasted. I think to keep their menu big they prepared a lot if the things in advance and froze it. In the bun rieu the tofu and crab egg thing were rubbery. (Not sure if it's always like that.) The broth was decent though, definitely better than their bun bo hue, which was pretty bland.
