The food is a lot better here than across the street at Anejo which is way overpriced. Although the food here is pretty authentic, the service is slow. Super cheap though. I love the rice & beans here but the carne asada meat is a little tough and not as tender as it should be. I've tried their chilaquiles as well and there was way too many onions in it which I hate. There's much better mexican food out there in Manhattan, but this place is cheap and does the job. My standard for a taco is well-seasoned meat, onions and cilantro on two corn tortillas with lime and salsa on the side. So, when my carne asada taco arrived with guac and salsa already generously applied, I was a little disappointed. That said, the presentation was nice and the dressings were tasty. There are certainly a lot of positive reviews about Tulcingo Del Valle and I don't want to take away from the fact that at this little hole in the wall joint, you can get some quality Mexican food. However, I'm going with three stars because while the food was good, decent Mexican, it didn't blow me away like the other reviewers seemed to imply. The beans and rice were a bit bland, a bit mushy, and the enchiladas were nicely flavored but also a touch on the mushy side. That said, the flavors were all really good, so I'm going with A-OK, but, as a note, I went there a while ago and haven't been back since. So as a California transplant in NYC, I appreciate and love most food. However, I do enter snob-land when it comes to Mexican food. Not Spanish food, not Puerto-Rican/Dominican/Latino food. Mexican. Because New York does not have good quality (AND CHIPOTLE DOES NOT COUNT EAST COAST!) Until I heard about this spot! It's quite literally a hidden gem; walking into the back of a store front I was slightly terrified I was entering some illegal den of tacos. I was grateful to see the many folks perched at the taco bar counters eating away. This place is legit. You can only order in Spanish. You get quality Mexican food that tastes straight from the taco bars in Ensenada. The two women chefs are spectacular, a true mom-and-pop establishment. Cheap prices, and there is no real "payment" process - when you are done eating you go back to the front of the store and they ring up what you said you had. How awesome! And for those shadesters out there, don't lie...they need the money. Dirty Mexican food does exist in New York :) read more

Very mediocre food. Charged a fortune for chips that should have been complimentary. Manager got in my face when I complained.

I get 2 tostadas ($7.50 or $8 depending on the day) with chorizo and potatos....and the guac to start at least once every 7 days. It's like crack, SO FLAVORFUL. And for about $12 you're full. The Sangria is also good, but remember... NO MARGARITAS here. In general, I eat here...then walk over to Anejo for their delicious house margaritas. I was born and raised in California, and I'd be pretty happy only eating Mexican food for the rest of my life. And Tulcingo is pretty much my idea of a perfect Mexican restaurant: it's casual and laid back. The food is delicious but unpretentious. Just straightforward, homemade Mexican fare at reasonable prices. The staff is also very kind and helpful with menu suggestions. The only downside is that it can be pretty slow. The last time I was there it took forever to get the check even though the restaurant wasn't busy. We had to ask for our check twice. But otherwise, this place is lovely! read more

This was my first Mexican food experience in NYC. I just moved to the city and I've heard great things about food in NYC. I went here last night looking for some delicious Mexican food. To start, the complimentary chips and salsa came and it was very good and very spicy. Did I mentioned I like spicy food. Anyway I ordered the mole Poblano, a Mexican spicy sauce with pieces of chicken. I enjoyed it very much, best mole sauce I had in a long time. The guacamole was very fresh and tasty. On the side was the beans, rice and soft flour tacos. I don't like soft tacos so I rejected those. But overall I enjoyed my dish. The restaurant seemed very small for the location, but that seems to apply to many restaurants in NYC. The service was fast, and the server very friendly. 3.5 Stars. read more

One of my favorite Mexican spots in the city! Standard prices, very fresh and authentic food. Their salsa verde is out of this world! Spice is prefect. Very solid place to come for plates of Mexican food. Their salsa is solidly enchiladas are really good with any of their red/green/mole sauce. The thing that makes this 4-stars instead of 3-stars for me is that their mole sauce is some of the best I've ever had. To be a cash only eatery, you have to be pretty good, but here's not the case. Though I like the fresh guac, most dishes did not have satisfactory flavor. My coworker and I each have a preferred Mexican restaurant on 10th Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets. It's remarkable that we can both be absolutely sure that we've found the best tacos in Hell's Kitchen, and our picks are literally two storefronts away from each other. My loyalty lies with the zany disco bodega tacos of Tehuitzingo Deli Grocery, but my coworker swears by Tulcingo Del Valle. The only way I could be sure that my taco spot is better than my coworker's taco spot was to order the same exact tacos at both locations. Tehuitzingo started with the lead, because their chicharron tacos are SECOND TO NONE. They're small, but they're simple, and the fatty pork skin's got some crunch to it. You're the master of your own condiments at Tehuitzingo, with plenty of limes and hot sauces to add on at your discretion. At Tulcingo, however, the tacos were condiment-laden monstrosities. I couldn't even taste the chicharron under all the guacamole sauce (which was a different substance from the excellent guacamole--more on that later). Perhaps the sauce was meant to enhance the flavor of the otherwise listless chunks of chicharron, which brought neither flavor nor texture to the tacos. So Tehuitzingo for the win. However--and this is a big however--Tulcingo serves outstanding guacamole. Freshly made, this guacamole could almost make you forget that chicharron tacos existed. Almost. read more

I took the first bite of my carnitas burrito and all I could think was "what the hell have I been doing with my life". I mean, this burrito was stupidly good. I can't figure out how I've wasted so many meals eating terrible terrible mexican food in manhattan when I could have been eating at Tulcingo. This place just has incredibly delicious mexican food. My $13 burrito was primarily rice :/ and had so little guac I wouldn't have known it was there. Don't recommend.

A disappointment. My husband and I abandoned our regular Mexican place and ordered a burrito, taco, and tostada. Although the price is right, the food was onion city. Inedibly oniony. And less importantly, very cilantroey even though we said no cilantro. The rice was also overcooked which turned it to mush and there were almost no beans. Couldn't even come close to finishing any of it. I think we'll stick with Tacocina on 9th-- it's worth the extra $$ to not scoop onion mush out of the food. read more

Not bad mexican food. But since I didn't have one of those recurring dreams on the taste of the chipotle chicken or salivating on the food afterwards, its only okay in my book. Although I haven't had real mexican food before so can't say I have anything to compare it to. The Chipotle chicken was good, really big platter too and the bill with tax and tip just for my platter came out to 14.00, which is not bad. I would've preferred for the chicken to not have bones though, maybe its just me but I'm a big fan of convenience so minus one star for that. Too bad their guacamole didn't look like it was home made and thick...that would've been enough to earn them a star back. Although the waitress mentioned the Chipotle sauce as really spicy...it was only mediocre to me. Finally a decent Mexican hidden gem. I am a real snob about tacos - so far La Esquina is the only NYC spot I think comes close to the LA taco experience. This place definitely delivers, and the menu is very extensive - from tacos and tortas to Mexican breakfast to milk shakes. And I love that when you ask for "spicy" they come through - I hate being let down on the kick. Only complaint is its slightly expensive for a bodega with some tables (~$4 per taco or so). Can't comment on the Yelp complaints about it being packed - I went after a ton of drinking at around 10 or 11 and we were the only people there. read more

Moved here from California a few months ago. Mexican food is kind of a big deal. When a friend suggested having dinner at Tulcingo, I was pretty stoked. Tulcingo's menu and ambiance reminded me very much of my favorite Mexican place back in CA. We shared the spicy pork and roast pork tacos, which were both very filling. Tulcingo's soft shell tacos are tasty and loaded with plenty of guacmole (yum). Made the mistake of ordering a chicken quesadilla to share as well. Ugh. Possibly the blandest thing I've ever had. It also had a horrible texture. I normally don't like to waste food, but this was so bad I didn't even bother taking the leftovers home for my husband. When we placed our order, we asked for sour cream on the side (instead of on top of the quesadilla). The waitress gave us this look as if our request was completely unreasonable. I love mexican and feel I have eaten at many here in NYC, California, Texas and throughout the south. Tulcingo is not my type of mexican. The service is slow, it is not cheap for the food you are getting and your stomach pays the price. We first tried this place several years ago, based on finding it on a "Best of NYC" list online. Since then, over many subsequent trips to the city, Tulcingo has been the one restaurant we ALWAYS visit. We all split the fresh guacamole and chips to start and then order our personal favorites. The enchiladas were great and the sauce was so flavourful, chicken on the bone (which is tastier in my opinion). the chips and guac were good and the prices make it a place to be a regular.
