I really gave this place a chance. My friends tried to convince me that the second time I visited would be better, but no it only got worse. The staff was rude and gave me strange looks. That wasn't even the worst part, while I was sitting down to try and enjoy my fajita I saw a roach running across the floor. I couldn't even finish my meal. That was the last straw. I'm never going back, not even when they open back up. Lord knows what kind of creatures had time to infest the place while they were closed. read more

This place has two rooms and it is really packed during lunch hour. I came here with my boyfriend and we got seated in the other room because one was full already. I got the spicy sausage tacos of 2 because I know they are rather generous with the portion. I was right. Two tacos filled me up no problem. Probably the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I don't even know where to start. Food took a long time to get to the table after ordering and I wish I could say it was worth the wait but it wasn't. Plates were not removed when the appetizers were finished so there was barely room on the table to comfortably eat the main dish. I was 1 of my party of 5 and no one cared for their meal. Who puts hugh raw carrots in a taco salad?! This place does! The soup looked like a bunch of large boiled vegetables in water. The rice and refried beans were a joke in a tiny plate and practically tasteless anyway. I paid for a side order of sour cream which no joke looked and tasted like milk! From the moment I sat down I asked for a separate check from the rest of my group. I should have known by the confusion on the server's face that this would be a problem. The bill comes and of course I did not get a separate bill. My items had to be paid separately/individually from the table's bill. Then once I paid my share my 4 friends wanted to split the bill evenly 4 ways... sounds easy enough right? WRONG! Each person had to pay a different amount because we were told we could not split the bill once I paid my portion of it. So the server was dazed and confused trying to choose items close in price to what each person ordered/wanted to pay. OK, I chalked it up to a bad night but figured it was over so was going to let it go. I spent the next 24 hours sick to my stomach throwing up and running to the bathroom. Again I was not going to write a bad review.... UNTIL I just saw my credit card bill! I wrote in a $6 tip on my credit card receipt just for my portion of the bill which I thought was fair for the mediocre service. I see a $12 tip was added to my portion of the bill!!!! WTF I am upset beyond words. How dare they change the amount of my tip! This is the first time I have ever written a bad review about anything but people need to know about this place. I love this place! It puts a smile on my face and warmth in my belly! We've been dropping into Tulcingo del Valle recently to get, what I would consider, above-average Mexican food right here in my neighborhood. Everything I've tried (tacos, enchiladas, carnitas in salsa verde and chicken in mole sauce) has been terrific. The thing I found most surprising was the yellow rice served with the platos. Typically, sides are served seemingly as an afterthought: bland and stale. Here, the rice was bursting with flavor. It shows that they put care into everything they make. By appearances, you would expect this place to be cheap eats and it can be if you restrain yourselves; however, with everything on the menu so tempting, we spent almost $50 on dinner for two recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the tacos. I got the al pastor tacos topped with guacamole. The tortillas were double stacked and did not melt from the moisture. Tortillas were not rubbery either. With each bit, the tacos released bursts of flavors with a slight hint of pineapple. Very enjoyable overall. The only downside was the price. I paid nearly $15 for 3 tacos. We had grand plans to hit up another three places in Queens, but with the exception of Tehuitzingo, every place we went to was table service, which slowed us down considerably, and it was getting late and we were feeling margaritas ;) Like the others, this review is taco-specific. The tacos at Tulcingo aren't that great. By this point ¡Taco Crawl! had swelled to 12 people, so we tried many different tacos, which were okay but not particularly enticing. The combination of too-moist meat and too much guacamole sauce leave these watered-down tacos in a perennial "don't call me, I'll call you" category. Something really off-putting about Tulcingo is that you can't order only one taco - you're required to order at least two of each meat, and they charge you the same as ordering two separate tacos. My friend went a week later and said he had to order three. The service wasn't too helpful. We asked our waitress how many glasses of sangria came in a pitcher and she was off by a good two. Would have been helpful to know when we ordered! The tacos are meh - two-star worthy - but in my opinion the issues with ordering and service really made this place take a hit. That being said this restaurant looks like it has a lot on its menu, so I'd be happy to go back and try some of the other dishes - just not the tacos. ¡Viva Taco! read more

Tried this place out after walking a few blocks to try and find some breakfast. So glad that we stopped! I ordered a scrambled egg and a chicken tamale with an horchata to drink. It was delicious! I even got a small piece of dried sweet potato after. My guy ordered an egg and sausage burrito that was huge with fresh orange juice! It was decent pricing for good authentic food. This is arguably the best, home-style, no-frills Mexican restaurant in NYC. Super fresh, great flavor, and excellent service.

I've lived in the neighborhood for over decade now and this is one of my favorite places. Food is always super yum and packs the right kick of heat, but most importantly has a great home-cooked flavor and vibe; it's the Mexican comfort and feel-good food you just crave. Friendly staff that you can tell are always smiling even behind the masks when you come by. I'm so glad they seem to be doing really well and making it through the pandemic! Big fan. read more

I came here with my Boo Boo to fuel up for lunch before our walk to the High Line park. We were seated on a smaller table even though we had our jackets, back pack, and purse. It was pretty cramped but didn't complain about it. We just didn't order appetizers then. I ordered the marinated pork enchilada and Boo Boo got the burrito without guac and wanted the beans of the side. But, they exacted their revenge by charging us the side of beans. The food tasted good and they came out fast and hot. The horchata was not too sweet and didn't settle in the bottom like many bad rice milk does. Wish they also have tomatillo salsa. Look it's NYC, so expecting amazing Mexican food is like complaining about the Chinese food in Moscow. That said, you could do worse than this casual, no frills, neighborhood spot that is mostly frequented by locals. For that reason alone, I hope it never goes away, as so many mom 'n' pop spots on 9th and 10th Ave are. The Caldo de Pollo con Vegetales is pretty tasty, as are the drinks. But last night, I did think twice -- I pulled out my phone and checked Yelp Mobile and was surprised to see all the hoopla and the praise for this place. The reviews didn't disappoint Food was delicious and incredibly affordable. Try their horchata (a vanilla cinnamon drink) -- very good also. Some of the best Mexican food in NYC. I can't get enough of the cheese enchiladas and/or flautas with salsa verde. The rice and beans are perfectly seasoned, and the guacamole is nice and creamy (I like it a little more garlicky and chunky, though). Their tacos are good, but the fillings get a little mushy. The burrito I had was fine for NYC standards but the service was disappointing. I ordered a veggie burrito and noted that I do not eat beef or pork. The waiter brought me a burrito stuffed with carnitas. Strike 1. My fiance and I also ordered chips and guac, which we received after we got our main plates. Strike 2. LA folks in town looking for good lunch. Quick lunch here found us enjoying well-prepared spicy enchiladas (all white meat), and a grilled chicken burrito that was tasty and not greasy. The decor is simple and clean. Surrealist Raymundo Medina's art adorns the walls, and the painter actually dined here today! We recommend for lunch or a fast dinner. I came here on a quest to find El Jimador's New Mix. It's an alcoholic drink that is basically flavored soda and tequila. My friend from Mexico introduced me to the drink, and I really wanted to buy one for myself. It's a really popular drink in Mexico, but is hard to find here because it is shipped from Mexico. According to the really nice cashier, TDV ships the beverages themselves which is why each can costs $3.50. Anyways, I thought the restaurant/ bodega was adorable and would love to go back to eat there! But, I was strictly on the mission. I bought both flavors: Paloma and Vampiro. Both are made with Squirt soda, El Jimador Tequila. Paloma is grapefruit flavor and Vampiro is a Sangria flavored which I was not a fan of. Too salty. But I love the Palmoa one!
