My go to for nachos I refuse to get them anywhere else as this wonderful place introduced nachos to Dallas when they opened in the 50s! A former CEO of mine took me here for my birthday 3 three years ago and it was the first place I had to go and eat at when I moved back to Dallas. We ordered our drinks and I got sweet tea.. they brought me unsweetened (twice), my girlfriend and I split the fajitas she got chicken I got beef and her chicken was pink, we asked the waitress if it was supposed to be pink and she just said "it's fajita chicken" then walked away. So my girlfriend trusted her an keep eating then couldn't anymore because it was getting more an more pink. I have eaten here for years. I alway get the Camerones. They are always excellent. Tonight, the prawns were bad. I could not eat more than 2. I sent it back. They did not charge me for the dinner but did for the soup that came with the meal. So for $4.95, you lose a customer (2 actually) and get my review of your sub standard meal. Had lunch for a business meeting here and the place was clean, nicely furnished, thus perfect for a one-on-one conversation. Unfortunately, when the salsa was served with the complimentary chips I knew it was gunna be a bad meal. The salsa was weak to say the least and served in a huge (probably from a can) pitcher so you can keep serving yourself cheap salsa. I ordered the chicken and beef enchiladas which included a deep fried taco. The taco was akin to a Jack-in-the-Box 2-for $1 tacos. Gross. The enchilada tortillas were stale. Beef also seems like a canned good. Yuk. I'm sure many "local people" appreciate the bland taste but if I wanted El Fenix I would drive there, at least their chips are better. read more

I went for lunch this week with a group of coworkers. It's a cute spot and the hostess and manager were both very friendly! The waiter seemed annoyed to have a big group (even though we had reservations) but was very attentive regardless. I ordered the lunch fajitas. All their lunch "specials" are $12 which isn't the best lunch deal but not the worst. The fajitas came out but didn't come with any cheese, sour cream or guacamole which is what fajitas usually come with. That's fine, the menu hadn't stated it so whatever.. I did order a side of sour cream and was shocked when my bill came and it said: 11.75 - fajita lunch 2.25 - side sr cream $2.25 for a SIDE of sour cream. That's absurd, for anywhere! Overall, no one was overly impressed with their food. The fajita salad is just a pile of iceberg lettuce with fajita meat on top.. the enchiladas were average. It is nice that the lunch specials apparently come with an ice team (though half of us were charged for the tea anyways). I was hoping it would be a cute lunch staple for us but I definitely won't be back for the quality/price. read more

Well, I haven't been to Tupinamba since I was in college back in the 70s. So my wife and I decided to go since she wanted to shop at North Park. Went when they opened. Very pleasant setting and pleasant staff. Chips and salsa are good and got drinks quickly. I liked that they had cheese nachos. Haven't found those anywhere else. Got those for appetizer and they brought out a big bowl of jalapeños. These are my favorite at Joe T's in Ft. Worth and was happy to have them here. My wife got sour cream and chicken enchiladas and she loved them. I got two meat tacos and a guacamole chalupa. She also had a meat taco. Didn't really care for the tacos. The meat was mushy and didn't care for the tortilla. But the guacamole was fine (missed the cilantro, though). Next time I'll get the enchiladas. The service was exceptional. Overall, a nice experience and we'll be back again. read more

Tupinamba has always been one of my very favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in Dallas. We were regular patrons of the original location on NW Highway across from Bachman Lake, following them to their move to Midway just south of LBJ and then to the Inwood Rd location. I went there for many years until all that horrendous construction started on LBJ, which made it inconvenient to navigate; so, hadn't had a Tupy fix in over 4 years. I was saddened to learn that the restaurant relocated last year to Central & Walnut Hill as it's not in close proximity to my home. But, we finally made the drive this past weekend to check out the spot. And, it was definitely worth the trip! The ultra modern decor is a huge departure from the Inwood facility, which was dated but contributed to its charm. There is a very large open dining room with beautiful polished wood flooring, lighting and art work. We chose to sit at their lovely quite large circular bar with granite top and comfortable chairs, overlooking an appealing small patio raised above the parking lot, with brightly colored umbrellas and green foliage to distract from the parking lot view.. Luis promptly greeted us and took our drink orders; one Tupy Top Shelf and one Miller Lite draft, My oh my, that margarita, perfectly made, brought back many memories of past visits, with the right amount of golden Grand Marnier. One of my favorites and IMO, the best libation in town. We quickly began munching on the thin chips and chunky salsa. The chips were almost, just almost, as wafer thin, warm and slightly oily as I prefer. Not bad, after adding some salt. The salsa was the right amount of heat for this wimpy palate. There is a spicier version available if you ask. I ordered my predictable usual, one soft cheese taco, one beef puffed taco with extra chopped tomatoes, and one cup of the Barracho bean soup, with some soft corn tortillas and butter. Ummm, just as I remember it. All simply delicious; lots of that creamy melted cheese on the taco, a generous serving of the beef in the puffed taco, of course adding lots of that delicious salsa on top.The smoky flavor of the tender beans in the soup with the onions and cilantro was scrumptious. I see several comments about the pricing, but I didn't think it was that much out of line. $10.50 for a supreme top shelf margarita, and $12.25 for the chips and salsa, my food order and soft tortillas. Miller Lite was $4.25. The visit couldn't have unfolded better...until Sipriono, my favorite server at the Inwood location came around the corner, immediately recognized me after a 4 yr absence, and came over to give me a big hug, saying how much he had missed seeing me. Sipriono would see me walk in at the previous location, give me a wave and go straight to the bar to obtain my margarita. As I pulled the chair up to the table, he'd appear with my drink in hand. Such a great personable friendly server and asset to the Tupinamba team. I was so glad to run into him and look forward to going back and sitting in his section. Service by Luis at the bar was friendly and helpful, always appearing at the right time to refill our drinks and see if we needed anything else. A big 5 star recognition for his exemplary service. Yes, we will be back even though it entails a bit of a drive out of our far North Dallas neighborhood for some more of that Tupy experience! read more

Hubby and I tried Tupinamba while running errands in the area. We are always reluctant to go for Mexican in Texas, as so much is Tex-Mex focused, but thought we'd give it a shot. So glad we did! The menu is not Tex-Mex heavy, which is good. We asked for spicier salsa than what came with the chips (the original looks like tomato sauce) and were rewarded with a warm and tasty salsa that had a growing heat. Hubby got the carnitas, which he said were the best he's had since we moved. I got a chicken burrito bowl and was very impressed with the taste of the chicken! It had a lot of great flavor-not bland like so many places. We stop by on Sunday around 12pm the place wasn't very busy yet. We were greeted by friendly staff, they brought chip and salsa super fast and drinks. After putting in our order food came out pretty fast as well which was great since we were really hungry. The food was pretty good the only reason I'm giving it a 4 start is pricing. This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Dallas. If you love fried tacos, this is the spot for you. Everything on the menu is great. However!!!Get the Tupy Taco. I think my favorite thing about this place besides the yummy margaritas (and fried tacos), is the small cup of salsa they bring you, (you can get three servings, instead of the usual two at other places. I've been going to Tupinamba's since 1971 when it was on Northwest Highway and have followed them at their other locations as they have moved through the years. I try to stop at Tupes every time I am in their part of town. I stopped in tonight - a busy Sunday night and they were packed. The service was very good for such a busy night. But I was blown away as I watched Eddie, the owner, bus and wipe down tables. Such a humble man - an owner who is out front - a true leader. I asked my waitress how he was to work for and she said it was like a big family. I left my waitress with a $25 tip for only serving me. To start off with, WOW! I've seen a few locations around Dallas and was always curious but not enough to make my way in. Well, I made my way in Saturday night for dinner. The atmosphere was excellent, the hostess greeted me with a welcoming smile and immediately took me to a table. I was then greeted by a lovely young lady who kept baskets of these amazing, homemade chips flowing. I loved her. Then, our waitress came over, immediately took our order because I was HUNGRY. Within 5 minutes my drinks came out with a highly anticipate water. And not much longer our food arrived. I ordered flautas which was accompanied with beans and a mini salad with sour cream and guacamole. They. Were. Amazing. I wanted to lick my plate. My friend ordered the fajitas and was extremely excited when choosing steak, chicken, and shrimp was an actual option. Needless to say he stuffed every bit of that meal down and sunk into his chair in victory! Our very attentive waitress then came to grab our cleaned plates, and dared ask if we wanted. Now, me? I order chocolate pie before dinner and go on with life as happy as can be so she had the right one hahaha Even though I was stuffed like a pepper, I asked her what she suggested. She began explaining to me that I couldn't go wrong but this mischievous grin she had on her face when she described how perfect the praline pie was. I was sold. We came here for lunch and ordered carnitas. The food was solid, with more than enough to share between two people (we had leftovers). The carnitas was really tender and flavorful, and cooked just right. The salsa that they bring out with the chips is kind of on the bland side, so we asked for something spicier. The new salsa was awesome! It had a smokey tangy flavor and way spicier than the table salsa, so definitely ask for the spicier salsa. Our waiter was really nice and gave us tips for ordering in the future. He recommends the carnitas made with spicy sauce, which is just jalapeños, onions, and other stuff added to it for more flavor. We will get that next time. The bar area is pretty nice because they have outlets going all around that have usb and regular plug ins to charge your phone or laptop. They also have free wifi and nice areas to work if you want to have a longer lunch. For a neighborhood Mexican place that isn't Gloria's, I like this spot for tex-mex! read more

I've been in the old and new kitchens and they are cleaned and maintained to the finest standard. If Gordon Ramsey's show turned up here, all he could possibly say is Bravo. We were initially told a 15 min wait but then as I left a little disappointed, the hostess asked if I wanted to sit in the bar area because they could accommodate us there. Bar area was perfectly fine with us! Free chips and spicy salsa sauce was initially offered to calm my hungry stomach. Hubby and I ordered the tupi deep fried tacos and the chicken embuelta (a deep fried tortilla with shredded chicken, immersed in a layer of thick cheese). The deep fried tacos were not great. The ground meat did not taste like quality meat. The chicken embuelta was actually quite good...until it became overwhelmingly too cheesy for me. We always had our cups filled and he recommend the best dishes. We tried their appetizers and pigged out on multiple dishes. Everything was so clean and welcoming. Tupinamba's is our favorite Mexican place - we were so happy when they came to Lake Highlands shortly after we moved to that area.
