It was after 8pm on a Tuesday night and before checking in to our nearby hotel my wife and I wanted to sample some local Mexican fare. The Tupinamba Cafe looked like just the spot. Maybe it was the green neon "Immediate Seating Available" glowing in the window? There looked to be a nice outdoor seating area but with the setting sun and dropping temps we chose to sit inside. Inside we found a modern freshly decorated interior with plenty of open tables and booths. We were warmly welcomed at the podium and quickly shown to a booth by the window. Our server promptly appeared taking our drink order of a pair of Dos XX lagers on tap. They have a full service bar as well. The drinks showed up quickly and we were ready for our tour of the menu. Our server was patient with my indecisive wife who finally settled on the number 6 combo with their signature deep fried taco. I opted for a pair of puffy tacos and refried beans. We enjoyed our beers and complementary fresh tortilla chips with salsa waiting for our entrees. Their salsa had some kick to it and was quite enjoyable. The chips warm and fresh. Our food showed up not too long later. My puffy tacos were not what I imagined and I honestly wasn't sure how to approach eating them. My first attempt to just pick it up and bite it resulted in a taco explosion with the debris falling all over my plate. For the second one, I just busted it up and ate it like nachos. My beef tacos were tasty as were the beans. I wasn't able to eat it all though as the portions were large and no it wasn't because I ate too many chips up front. My wife devoured her enchilada and tostada cleaning off her plate. She enjoyed everything and I thanked her for spotting this place off the service road. Service was excellent and friendly the entire time. Everything seemed to come out quickly and tasted yummy. We will certainly return on our next visit to Dallas. read more

I've been here several times for the enchiladas and tupy tacos which are always consistent. Decided to switch it up and ordered guiso. I was so disappointed. The beef was so dry and hard. I let the waitress know but I was running short on time so I didn't send it back. There could be a lot of improvement with your staf ar least trying to make it right. read more

Fast and friendly service. However, the bean tostada was over whelming with the taste of chili powder. Couldn't finish it. The beef taco was just a notch above the one You can get at Jack-in-the-Box. They look very very similar. The guacamole tostada was good, I would definitely get that again. read more

If I remember correctly, the last time I dined at Tupinamba was in the 1960's. They were located on Lovers Ln. We were greeted at the door with smiling faces and were seated without waiting. The chips and salsa were very good. Our entrees were quickly delivered and outstanding; excellent flavor and freshness. Our server was very attentive. We drove 45 minutes to eat here because this restaurant popped up on numerous "best Tex Mex in DFW" lists. I thought it was good, but not a restaurant I would drive 45 minutes to eat at again. The service was great. We had the #8 which was a sour cream chicken enchilada with rice, beans and a guacamole tostada. My husband had the Mexican flag which was 3 different enchiladas. It didn't come with any rice and beans. We had queso which was good. The salsa was tasty but the chips were too thick for my liking. Again, everything was good but I had expectations for this to become a new favorite restaurant which were not met. If I lived nearby I'd come again. read more

I had high hopes. This is the continuous battle as a displaced New Mexican. I am searching for food like home. The chips were warmed and delicious, the salsa spicy, and the queso with a refreshing chili undertone. Tupinamba was honest about their Tex - Mex menu items. It was the menu items labeled Mexican that gave me the hope I craved. There is even a menu item called West Texas Enchiladas with an egg - a signature mark of NM food. BUT unfortunately the food was classic Tex- Mex. We ordered the chicken puff taco, sour cream enchilada, the queso appetizer, and the Mexican flag. The Mexican plates were overpriced in my opinion as they did not include rice and beans for $12-$13. As an overview I will summarize by saying the chicken had an interesting flavor that was not great, and I will not seek an opportunity to return. Tupinamba is solid, classic Tex-Mex cuisine. I had not been since they moved from over on Inwood and I had forgotten how good the food was. I pretty much order the same thing at every Tex-Mex restaurant, sour cream enchiladas, and the Tupi version is delish. And I can never turn down a puffed taco so a had to get one when I saw it on the menu. Service was fast and very friendly. I'll definitely be adding Tupi back into my Tex-Mex rotation! read more

Good Tex-Mex food. I came with a group of friends on a Sunday for lunch and had no problem getting seated quickly. I love how the salsa is served and chips were constantly replaced when empty. The food itself is exactly what you should expect from Tex-Mex. Enchiladas were cheesy and the beef quesadilla had a lot of flavor but were very greasy . The dish that was a win for us was the Carnitas. The meat literally fell apart and had good flavor. Restaurant is clean and service is fast and friendly. Prices are higher than what I typically pay for Tex-Mex food. Although we enjoyed our meals nothing really stood out as a must come back. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I've had in the past few years. Found a place at the bar, but it needed to be cleaned. Sat and waited at least 5 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge that I was sitting and to even start to clean. I asked for a menu since it was my first time but the waiter was so adamant to take my drink order. He finally returns and I order this pitiful excuse of their house Margarita. I then have to wait another 5-8 minutes while everyone else has been checked on and/or having full conversations with the other bartenders. The food was not bad, but the service here was most annoying (well the lack thereof). Definitely not planning on coming back. I thought with a name like cafe, they were going to serve bagels and muffins. This Mexican food was authentic and the food was amazing. We started with chips and salsa. It was a little spicy, but Tre waitress kept my water filled. I had an enchilada dish with egg on top. I didn't think I'd like it, but it was great. Next time I'll have guacamole with it. Solid Tex Mex food. I've eaten much of it over the years as a visitor from Philadelphia to my Texas family and this place is a good choice. Really good margaritas, constant refills on tortilla chip baskets and I had a pretty delicious chicken fajita quesadilla. The other orders were solid as well. They have sweet outside seating with umbrella tables but the rain prevented us from that experience. The portions are huge, the food is good and the service was above board. One word that describes this place: FLAVORLESS I'm very salt sensitive and had to add salt to every single chip in the basket. The salsa was bland but had nice heat! Service was pretty good, wasn't too busy for a late Thursday lunch. My husband ordered the 12 man (new York strip, 4 cheese nachos, guacamole, and a cheese enchilada with chili con carne on top)...the price of that was $18!! For an incredibly juicy steak and a whole LOTTA CHEESE...?? Thought that was a bit steep. His steak was cooked perfectly! I was feeling basic that day so I got the beef fajitas. A beautiful entree and smelled devine, but you could probably have better at on the border for half the price. Meat and beans were bland...can make better beans at home in the crockpot. In my never ending search for the best Mexican food, I have finally come full circle. I'm old now and this is one of the first Mexican restaurants I remember my parents taking me to in Oak Cliff. I have re-discovered Tupinamba's since being back in Dallas and it is even better than I remember. I tend to judge Mexican food by the cheese enchiladas first and theirs are the best I have ever had and always consistent. Tupy tacos...I'm addicted. I still don't know how we've lived in this area for 12 years and not known about Tupinamba! We've had food to-do as well as dined in and it's been a very good experience either way. I love the Mexican Flag enchiladas - do good! The hubs had tried several different dishes and every one has been a winner. The salsa can be hit or miss. It's never spicy but the first time we went, it tasted mostly like tomatoes and with no salt. It's been fine ever since! The space is much bigger inside than its strip center storefront alluded to. The decor is nice and the bar area is pretty cool. Plenty of seating even on a busy night! Their outdoor patio is also very cute and perfect for a nice evening. If you're looking for a solid Tex Mex option in the area and you haven't checked this place out yet, it's time to put it on your list! read more

Pro tip... they have a fajita lunch salad and a soup and fajita salad listed on the lunch menu. These two items are the same price and the salads are the same size. My friend ordered soup and salad and I just ordered the salad, so basically I missed out on a free cup of tortilla soup. read more

My girlfriend and I went to this place for the first time and let's just say it coulda been better. We ordered our drinks and I got sweet tea.. they brought me unsweetened (twice), my girlfriend and I split the fajitas she got chicken I got beef and her chicken was pink, we asked the waitress if it was supposed to be pink and she just said "it's fajita chicken" then walked away. So my girlfriend trusted her an keep eating then couldn't anymore because it was getting more an more pink. The biggest disappointment was their Mexican guacamole which wasn't like a guacamole at all, barely had any avocado and was filled with eggs.
