It was after 8pm on a Tuesday night and before checking in to our nearby hotel my wife and I wanted to sample some local Mexican fare. The Tupinamba Cafe looked like just the spot. Maybe it was the green neon "Immediate Seating Available" glowing in the window? There looked to be a nice outdoor seating area but with the setting sun and dropping temps we chose to sit inside. Inside we found a modern freshly decorated interior with plenty of open tables and booths. We were warmly welcomed at the podium and quickly shown to a booth by the window. Our server promptly appeared taking our drink order of a pair of Dos XX lagers on tap. They have a full service bar as well. The drinks showed up quickly and we were ready for our tour of the menu. Our server was patient with my indecisive wife who finally settled on the number 6 combo with their signature deep fried taco. I opted for a pair of puffy tacos and refried beans. We enjoyed our beers and complementary fresh tortilla chips with salsa waiting for our entrees. Their salsa had some kick to it and was quite enjoyable. The chips warm and fresh. Our food showed up not too long later. My puffy tacos were not what I imagined and I honestly wasn't sure how to approach eating them. My first attempt to just pick it up and bite it resulted in a taco explosion with the debris falling all over my plate. For the second one, I just busted it up and ate it like nachos. My beef tacos were tasty as were the beans. I wasn't able to eat it all though as the portions were large and no it wasn't because I ate too many chips up front. My wife devoured her enchilada and tostada cleaning off her plate. She enjoyed everything and I thanked her for spotting this place off the service road. Service was excellent and friendly the entire time. Everything seemed to come out quickly and tasted yummy. We will certainly return on our next visit to Dallas. read more

Fast and friendly service. However, the bean tostada was over whelming with the taste of chili powder. Couldn't finish it. The beef taco was just a notch above the one You can get at Jack-in-the-Box. We drove 45 minutes to eat here because this restaurant popped up on numerous "best Tex Mex in DFW" lists. I thought it was good, but not a restaurant I would drive 45 minutes to eat at again. The service was great. We had the #8 which was a sour cream chicken enchilada with rice, beans and a guacamole tostada. My husband had the Mexican flag which was 3 different enchiladas. It didn't come with any rice and beans. We had queso which was good. The salsa was tasty but the chips were too thick for my liking. The chips were warmed and delicious, the salsa spicy, and the queso with a refreshing chili undertone. Tupinamba was honest about their Tex - Mex menu items. It was the menu items labeled Mexican that gave me the hope I craved. There is even a menu item called West Texas Enchiladas with an egg - a signature mark of NM food. BUT unfortunately the food was classic Tex- Mex. We ordered the chicken puff taco, sour cream enchilada, the queso appetizer, and the Mexican flag. The Mexican plates were overpriced in my opinion as they did not include rice and beans for $12-$13. As an overview I will summarize by saying the chicken had an interesting flavor that was not great, and I will not seek an opportunity to return. Tupinamba is solid, classic Tex-Mex cuisine. I had not been since they moved from over on Inwood and I had forgotten how good the food was. Good Tex-Mex food. I came with a group of friends on a Sunday for lunch and had no problem getting seated quickly. I love how the salsa is served and chips were constantly replaced when empty. The food itself is exactly what you should expect from Tex-Mex. Enchiladas were cheesy and the beef quesadilla had a lot of flavor but were very greasy . The dish that was a win for us was the Carnitas. The meat literally fell apart and had good flavor. Restaurant is clean and service is fast and friendly. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in the past few years. Found a place at the bar, but it needed to be cleaned. Sat and waited at least 5 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge that I was sitting and to even start to clean. I asked for a menu since it was my first time but the waiter was so adamant to take my drink order. He finally returns and I order this pitiful excuse of their house Margarita. I then have to wait another 5-8 minutes while everyone else has been checked on and/or having full conversations with the other bartenders. I thought with a name like cafe, they were going to serve bagels and muffins. This Mexican food was authentic and the food was amazing. We started with chips and salsa. It was a little spicy, but Tre waitress kept my water filled. I had an enchilada dish with egg on top. I didn't think I'd like it, but it was great. Next time I'll have guacamole with it. They have sweet outside seating with umbrella tables but the rain prevented us from that experience. The portions are huge, the food is good and the service was above board. I have re-discovered Tupinamba's since being back in Dallas and it is even better than I remember. I love the Mexican Flag enchiladas - do good! The hubs had tried several different dishes and every one has been a winner. The salsa can be hit or miss. It's never spicy but the first time we went, it tasted mostly like tomatoes and with no salt. It's been fine ever since! The space is much bigger inside than its strip center storefront alluded to. The decor is nice and the bar area is pretty cool. Plenty of seating even on a busy night! Their outdoor patio is also very cute and perfect for a nice evening. My go to for nachos I refuse to get them anywhere else as this wonderful place introduced nachos to Dallas when they opened in the 50s! A former CEO of mine took me here for my birthday 3 three years ago and it was the first place I had to go and eat at when I moved back to Dallas.
