It dawned on me recently when I purchased gorgeous Peacock asparagus from Whole Foods here in Knoxville, TN that its tag indicates distributed by Turlock Fruit Co. The asparagus from the Peacock Farm was so fabulous that I returned this morning determined to purchase more (only two bunches remained among all asparagus available .. and I again chose Peacock's)! But, the amazing thing is that I live for the day when "King of the West" honeydew's arrive at Publix in July or so ... and I know from the day Publix opened its first store in our fair city that we can count on Turlock's to get these melons this far east! Publix pretty much has a monopoly on these special melons, although I have seen an occasional KOW melon in a rival grocery. Every year I await the arrival of the King of the West honeydews at my local Publix Market, These melons NEVER disappoint, always perfectly ripe, sweet and firm. I bought Turlock Fruit Company honey dews from Seiwa Japanese Supermarket in Torrance California on Hawthorne Boulevard. As I entered the store a fragrant, tropical, fruity, musky, dark honey perfume wafted to my nose beckoning me to lift the precious heavy light greenish, yellow white orb to my nose to take a deep breath of ambrosia. I have tasted the two varieties at Seiwa: Orange flesh & green honeydew. Upon cutting into the melon, sweet juice trickles down where the blade goes through the fruity meat. The flesh is impregated with an ineffably sweet, vine ripened fully alluring taste of late summer, early fall when the hot rays of sun ripen the melons. The melon is so full of this sweet elixir that juice drips and the ultra soft flesh literally melts in the mouth. In fact it is so juicy soft there is almost no need to have any teeth. I have paired this ambrosia from the Gods with excellent Prosciutto di Parma by wrapping it around a wedge of melon. Also sausage products from La Española Meats in Harbour City. A pairing of Jamón Ibérico de Bellota would probably make José Andrés or his Maestro Chef Ferán Adriá envious. If you see a label with Sycamore Honeydew #4034, grab the most fragrant honeydew and run to the nearest cash register. Turlock Fruit also grows Casaba, Hami, Orange flesh honeydew, Sharlyn, Piel de Sapo, Crenshaw, Cantaloupe, Galia, etc. which I have not had the pleasure to sample. 4+ Yelp stars. read more

The orange dew is my summer staple. I get the box (6x) and give some to friends and family and keep two or three for myself. Soooo good!!

Always great fruit at excellent prices! This year was rough. A cooler than normal start to summer which delayed the opening date. That plus the drought definitely produced smaller melons . Most were great but there were a few not so great. Hot hot weather creates yummy melons. Please check this place out each season. It starts about July 4th & ends beginning to mid September. read more

Incredible prices on a Turlock product that is nationally renowned ! I believe we got all the melons for a dollar each . How can you beat that ? Plus the staff is friendly and willing to answer all your questions ; especially to "melon newbies" like us . Open through out the week.
