We came here for dinner on a weeknight (Thursday). The ambiance was great--not too dark and somber, but not too bright and loud. I'd say a great place to bring a date. Once we were seated, we were faced with a daily menu with a good variety of choices. We had the arancini which was amazing: gooey rice inside with cheese, crisp outside, the balls sitting atop a pool of delicious tomato sauce. We also had the tartare, which was bound by a yellow egg yolk (double down on the raw eating!) For mains, my partner had the rib eye special, cooked to perfection, and I had the Berkshire pork schnitzel special, which I promptly finished in its entirety (it was excellent). I would absolutely come back again! Reservations are probably advisable for weekends, and you should get one on a weekday just in case. And its BYOB! read more

My friend and I love to pick new spots to dine every time we hang out. We had both heard about Turtle + The Wolf but neither of us had made it there yet. My only regret is how long it took me to make it here. We had the burrata appetizer which was simply perfect. At the time it was with Brussels and if you think the two don't work, I suggest giving it a go before judging. The balance of flavors was down to such a science that I know I could never even attempt to recreate it at home. But my entree was the big star of the evening. I ordered the pappardelle with pork sugo and I sometimes stop in my tracks thinking about that dish because it was so incredible. The tender pasta paired with the sauce had such developed flavors that I can honestly still recall how I felt when I took the first bite. You get just enough salt from the cheese to give it a another layer of flavor without overwhelming the dish. Also, even if you don't think you have room, go for the brioche doughnuts for dessert. An A for effort is what I'd give.... however the food is what is lacking in the equation. I stepped in for brunch on Sunday and the atmosphere spoke wonders to me. I ordered the brûlée grapefruit and it was excellent. Perfect amount of brûlée on the grapefruit. My main course was the shrimp and grits, I wasn't satisfied. The coddled eggs just fell flat and when I moved them over to the grits it seemed to drown in them. I needed a spoon to enjoy the rest of my meal. The grits didn't have enough substance to be considered grits and tasted bland. Under seasoned gravy and the prawns were over cooked. My girlfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy. My personal opinion on their "coddled eggs" is just under poached eggs. In this case her poached eggs were over cooked so at that point the meal was just inconsistent. The food fell short of my expectations but the atmosphere is homey and relaxing. I highly suggest you BYOB for brunch and most likely BYO S&P. Chicken and dumplings - moist and crispy chicken over the best dumplings, accompanied by perfectly browned (and buttery) mushrooms Ramp and riccotta purses were divine. Our favorite, go-to restaurant for an incredible meal in a casual yet sophisticated setting. Turtle + The Wolf has been a staple for us for at least the last year, and I can honestly say we have never had a bad meal. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the food is always delicious. For the quality of the food and the innovative nature of it, the prices are quite good. Some of our personal favorites are the chicken liver pate, the brussel sprouts with burrata, the short rib, and the fish of the day. The arancini is a great little pick too, for a great price. Never a disappointment, and we love that parts of the menu change with the season and ingredients. Recently did the fried chicken dinner for the first time, and have to say it was quite the experience! Delicious food - and lots of it. The chicken was flavorful and juicy, and the peppers, biscuits, and other sides were divine. So much food that we actually have two nights of dinner from it, so make sure to come hungry! Overall, we already recommend this place to everyone we know, but if you've never been I would definitely give it a shot. read more

After giving us a few minutes to look over the menu he came and took our orders. We ordered family style meals twice during the pandemic, and everything was absolutely delicious. During this time we also decided to keep our wedding date in May and host a very small family dinner to celebrate. We reached out to Chef Lauren and he created a menu that was everything we envisioned and more. Not only that, but we had so much food that we had a full second meal out of it the next day! So disappointed! We were excited to read all the great reviews for Turtle + the Wolf on Yelp and Open Table. Made a reservation with Open Table. We were a table of three (myself, my husband and our aunt). Ambiance: 3.5 stars Long narrow, great artwork by local artist. Acoustics are challenging. Nothing to absorb the sound. Service: 2 stars The server we had could only speak to and look at my husband. She could not direct any eye contact nor could she face myself or our aunt to describe the of specials. Weird to have a server like this in this restaurant. When I let her know I couldn't eat my Mussels entree (more to come on that later) and that they were not as described on the menu. She responded "I'm sorry, would you like me to pack them up for you to take home"????!!!! REALLY? We had 5 pm reservations. The place had only a few tables with patrons. Most of the staff seemed to what to chat with each other. Appetizers: 3.75 stars Rosemary Focaccia: I made the table order based on the reviews. I am gluten free so I wanted to live vicariously thru them. They said it was OK. Nothing outstanding. Not nearly as great as the Focaccia at La Focaccia in Summit. 3 stars Fluke Crudo - Nothing extraordinary, not nearly as good as the one a few door down at Dai-Kichi. 3 stars Simple Green Salad - This was lovely! Nothing unusual but very fresh. 4 stars Roasted Beet Tartare with Goat Cheese Croquette - The Best! 5 Stars Entrees: 3 stars Brick Chicken: this was the winner of our three entrees. Sunday Brunch- where do i begin! Now me and my boyfriend LOVE brunch, but we are no rookies to the brunch game. We arrived at Turtle and the Wolf on Sunday at 9:45AM. Kinda early? Not for true fans of Turtle and the wolf. There were patrons already seated, ordering, and majority of the tables were taken. Our hostess, offered us a two top right near the door or a two top in the back of the place. We gladly took the rear option. FOOD: To share we ordered the cheddar grits, and a side of potatoes (fried extra crispy). My goodness! The potatoes came out AMAZING. The cut of the potatoes as well also were unique and really helped catch the flavor. ENTREES: I went with the three egg frittata, and he choose the Spackle. All entrees were amazing, and we hope to return to this cute place to try their expansive dinner menu! Cons: We dined without Prosecco, so next time we will be sure to bring some with us. read more

This can now be considered one of my favorite date night restaurants in Montclair. I wanted a place that was special for Mike's birthday dinner and this spot didn't disappoint. The decor is sexy, cool and the music selection was amazing. We were lucky enough to get a spot right out front and because the reservation was for 9pm metered parking was free. We were seated adjacent to the open kitchen, so we were able to see lots of dishes going out, which got us excited about the meal ahead. We started with several appetizers, including a simple green salad, focaccia with ramp butter and local burrata. Everything was well seasoned and beautifully plated. We were excited after that to have our entrees. I ordered the soft crab special with asparagus and a strawberry sauce. Mike ordered the smoked beef short rib which fell off the bone. We were definitely pleasantly surprised with this seasonal menu and how each component compliment each other on the plate. So I make reservations for my wife and I for T+W on Friday night, February 17 @ 5:30pm. Looking forward to a long Valentine's Day weekend. Dinner and a show to kick things off. T+W is the new kid on the block so we figure we will give it a shot. When we arrive the place is kind of empty as is to be expected @ 5:30 but it fills up quickly. Indie music playing; Shins, Broken Bells, etc. Good stuff. Right up my alley. Looking forward to a great dinner! We order two appetizers, the roasted spanish octopus and the charcuterie plate. The octopus was good but dry and only 1 piece about 10 inches long? For $17? The fingerling potatoes that came with it lacked any flavor whatsoever. The charcuterie plate was unsatisfactory. No prosciutto, capicola, soppressata, salami, even pepperoni. A piece of white bread toast (perfectly toasted I will add), some melba toast, and slices of super fatty & rich goose liver pates. 3 slices of pickles, a few strands of pickled red onion, and a glob of spicy brown mustard rounded out the plate. Nothing but pate. Note to kitchen: when making a proper charcuterie plate you need to mix up the textures. And not with toast. Goose liver pate is fine but also include a hard salami. Put something tangy like a sour sausage but then add something warm. Don't just put goose liver pate on there with some toast and call it charcuterie. For dinner I had the bacon wrapped monkfish and my wife had the braised beef brisket. From the first bite of the monkfish something seemed off. I immediately checked to see if it was cooked through. Now I never had monkfish before and I heard it's a dense fish but it was spongy. Nevertheless, I ignored my instinct and continued on convincing myself I had no prior experience with monkfish to judge it properly. The taste was alright, the bacon adding a nice complement to what I assume was the natural fish flavor. The accompanying navy beans + kale was bland and watery. I don't know if if T+W has a low sodium directive but there was zero flavor to the watery navy beans and the kale could have used a little more time cooking. My wife commented that the brisket was tough. She said the rest of the dish was uninspiring. We finished our meal, declined dessert as we had enough letdowns so far and didn't want to spoil the rest of our Valentines' Day extended weekend so we paid the bill (~$120 with tip) and left. Our waiter was great by the way. The review isn't done! I haven't even gotten to the juicy part yet. We head to our show which was enjoyable and finished out the night. On Saturday I woke up to a bit of queasiness in my stomach. I chalk it up to the pate being so rich and let's face it; it's not like I eat monkfish and octopus every day, and have a breakfast of my usual Bob's Red Mill steel cut oatmeal. That's when it hit me. It wasn't just queasiness. Something was wrong... I went through a nasty bout of food poisoning for the rest of the day Saturday and am just starting to feel myself tonight. During my battle I literally coughed up the evidence of the only undigested thing causing my pain; a spongy piece of monkfish. Food poisoning happens. While the gifts, flowers and candy are great he truly always seems to find the most delicious restaurant for Valentine's dinner. Turtle + The Wolf is a quaint romantic restaurant situated in Upper Montclair. This adorable restaurant is sure to please even the pickiest of diners. There truly is something for everything with a decent variety of entrees plus a few specials. Since this restaurant is BYO, my fiance made sure to bring along a bottle of my favorite wine. We decided to start our meal with the focaccia and arancini. The focaccia was topped with a mixture of sea salt, rosemary and olive oil which was delicious. The arancini included a spicy tomato sauce for dipping. I have to say it was probably the best arancini I have ever had. I am still thinking about the delicious cheesy center! For dinner I selected the gnocchi with a butternut squash puree, pork lardo, brown butter and toasted pistachios. The combination of flavors was perfect! The gnocchi were so fluffy melted in your mouth, I definitely made the right decision. My fiance ordered the braised and roasted chicken that came with a pear puree and grilled cipollini onions. He absolutely loved his meal, he said each bite was better than the last. He really liked to combo of the chicken with the pear puree, the mixture sweet and savory was spot on. For dessert we ordered the maple bourbon pot au creme. Neither of us had ever had pot au creme but it just sounded so good we decided to try it. It was absolutely delicious and not overly sweet, I highly recommend it! In my opinion, this is a great romantic restaurant in the beautiful town of Montclair. read more

This is one of those times that 1 Star isn't low enough. These people don't know how to run a business, deal with customers or communicate like professionals. If you order, expect your order to be ready 45-60 minutes after they tell you it will be. When you are there waiting, they will keep telling you it will be ready in 5 minutes, but it doesn't come. When you continue to ask when it will be ready, they will be rude to you for complaining about how late it is and then tell you that it's not their fault. For appetizers, we have loved the chicken mousse and the fried pork belly with clams. For entrees, we really enjoyed the squid ink pasta with blue crab which I think is seasonal but so good if you see it on the menu! The brick chicken is also so juicy and seasoned perfectly. Wow this place is amazing! The food was delicious. We stayed with an appetizer of local barrata, asparagus and pickled rhubarb. The barrata was creamy and fresh. The rhubarb was a new experience- really enjoyed it the the cheese and asparagus. My husband had the halibut with lobster sauce and it was exceptional- the fish was cooked perfectly- a nice thick fillet. The accompanying sauce had wonderful rich lobster flavor and the sauce itself was light and generously served. I had the the papardelle and pork sugo. The pasta is handmade on site. Loved the dish. We had a peanut butter and chocolate dessert- very fudge and rich, and a maple syrup creamer brûlée that was really special. Can't recommend highly enough. The tables around us were happy and raving about their dinners. A great night all around. It is a byob place so bring wine if you want it. read more

I have to say, this restaurant serves some of the best food I've had in awhile. Every dish - from appetizer to dessert - was phenomenal and left me wanting more. Our server was equally great and did her best to be as detailed, attentive and polite as possible. Why the three stars, then? The manager just does not deserve to be in the service industry. There was a small misunderstanding at our table where one of our diners thought the Berkshire Pork dish of the day was a serving of porkchop instead of pork belly (this was not the fault of the server at all). Regardless, when the pork belly was brought out, our guest sent it back, explaining the situation, to which the manager came over and immediately became defensive - implying although this was what he ordered and he is stuck with it, because it was essentially his mistake. WHAT? This restaurant is aiming to be one of the best in NJ and you're forcing a customer to keep a dish he doesn't want? You honestly get better service at a chain restaurant in this regard. The manager became a bit more hostile over the course of the evening, reminding us that our table reservations "were up" and it was essentially time for us to go. No thank you or an apology for forcing us to buy a dish that no one wanted, but essentially kicking us out, because we sent a dish back. There are definitely better ways to handle every situation that came up and the fact that the manager approached it wrong every time makes me wonder how long this great restaurant will actually last. I'll come back to Turtle + the Wolf because the food is amazing and worth every 5-star review on Yelp. EDIT: (PLEASE READ) Lauren Hirschberg, the chef and owner of Turtle + the Wolf took time out of his day to speak to me about my experience and helped me gain perspective on the issues that occurred during our time at the restaurant. He took fault for the initial situation (sending back the dish) and kindly explained his reasoning, but ultimately apologized for its effect on our dinner. He acknowledged that reservations are incredibly sensitive at his restaurant and asked for feedback on how to approach the situation in the future. We tried to take out frequently to support this restaurant that we loved in non covid times. We generously tipped over 20% for curbside pickup. Mostly we were pleased. But tonight my husband paid $29 for a tiny octopus with "putanesca." Since when is putanesca a shit ton of canned black olives? Disgusting. The first time here, I ordered the clam lasagna and remember enjoying this, but not enough to order it again last night. Some memorable dishes from last night were the oysters, mussels and halibut.. all of these dishes were delicious. Some less memorable dishes were surprisingly the simpler dishes. the deviled eggs(I've had better). I was excited to try the burrata and peach appetizer but it was lacking flavor. The fluke crudo was also lacking flavor. The service is good. Food is probably a 3.5, but I rounded up to a 4 because service is good. Best meal I ever had in the Montclair area service and food was superb ! Atmosphere and beauty of restaurant makes it even better !!

Dinner was absolutely delicious. We came without reservations and were seated very quickly on a Tuesday night. The host and server were so friendly and extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Oysters were fresh! Pork belly and clams had a perfect balance of richness, acid, creaminess. Could have eaten 4 of those alone. Got a side of shishito peppers also, because why not? For entrees, we had a berkshire pork special of in house made blood sausage. When you combined all the flavors on the plate together, it was perfectly seasoned and a nice portion size. We had to splurge on the duck confit pot pie which I basically wish I could eat every day and not have a heart attack from. So worth every bite if you can spare your arteries for the day. We got the pound cake dessert to go and I found the cake slice itself overly sweet without dipping it into the ricotta, but I'd imagine if we ate it at the restaurant, it would have been plated appropriately, and I still ate the whole thing so... Can't wait to come back to try more. Saw the halibut dish come out of the kitchen a few times, and it looked and smelled amazing. read more

Excellent meal. The chefs know what they are doing there. We came with a group of 4, tried a fair amount of dishes and literally every one was excellent. Moreover lot's of flavor and subtle creativity with each dish. Also the portions were significantly larger than we would have expected. The beets and the pork shank were the highlights for me and the zeppoles at the end are a must. Usually zeps are doey and heavy. These were light and perfect. We were not able to put in an app order while we decided on dinner which happens sometimes and I get it on a busy Friday, but don't like it anyway and its my review :). Also, found it weird that they ran out of the individual portion of the wagu steak but like I said everything we had was delicious. The fact that it was a BYOB made the wine perfect and the bill laughable as we ate like kings and queens. Look forward to going back. read more

I have been to this new Montclair restaurant four times since they opened and found the food and ambiance a nice addition to the town but overpriced for the service. Tonight I just ate my last meal there and encourage others not to waste your money if you want to enjoy a relaxing and high quality dining experience. We made reservations at 5:30 on Saturday night because that's all that was available, ok with us because we are early dinners anyway. From the moment we sat down the wait staff and manager were rushing our orders to the point of rudeness and interrupting our conversation. With all of their perceived abuse of our time spent at the table the bill was 50 dollars apiece without wine and finished a half hour before we were told to get out. Last supper! read more

After trying to get in here for over a year we lucked out and got a reservation for 6:30. Being the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend no doubt aided us . It is bound to be our first and last time. The menu was simple and nothing truly inspired us. The food was good but not exceptional like I had heard .The specialty dish tonight, a duck pot pie ,was sold out by the time we got there, which was only an hour and a half into the evening. The bill was $50 a piece, plus tip, which is on the high side. Being that I am fair I left a 20% tip. The reason we will likely not be returning is for none of the reasons already cited. The overwhelming reason is the coldness of the staff. The hostess who seated us made no attempt to be friendly. Very business-like. Our waiter was as cold as ice. Any attempt to engage him in banter was met with stiffness. Busboy made no attempt to be social either.Upon leaving ,the other hostess came running out the door to thank us. We had to put our coats on at the table so there was no need to come after us as if we had jumped up and fled. Having grown up and lived in Montclair for many years,this is not behavior to be expected in Montclair. Sad to say ,we are deeply disappointed. But there are plenty of alternatives in Upper Montclair; such as Uptown 596 and De Novo, which satisfy us in all respects. read more

Had dinner last night (3/8/19) at The Turtle and Wolf in Montclair, NJ. Ridiculous! Can't even deal!! Just f*cking ridiculous how good it was!! Chicken liver mousse (spread like butter....with the onions and mustard seed, I wanted to take that home & just eat it forever!), pork belly with clams (perfect crispness on the pork belly with this gravy you want to swim in), the most decadent burrata I've ever had with roasted Brussels and a touch of cayenne, fish of the day: sea bass over sweet potato (crispy skin was awesome and sweet potato melted in your mouth), squid ink pasta with blue crab (I thought I was going to cry when I put the first forkful in my mouth.....the crab and a touch of uni I believe....pasta cooked to awesomeness) and for dessert peanut butter chocolate tart (a giant and more decadent peanut butter cup) and brioche donuts with this (I believe) apple cider dipping sauce. I think the brioche donuts just melted in my mouth. I don't think I chewed at all! I have an extensive vocabulary and have been to some great spots off of the list of Top 25 restaurants in NJ but this meal.......indescribable. UNREAL! Can't wait to return!! DO NOT RESERVE THE FRIED CHICKEN!!! This restaurant has always been a well respected choice for my wife and my family. This time was VERY disappointing. We made a point of ordering their fried chicken ahead of time, assuming they would provide an extra-ordinary, delicious rendition of it that we would remember for years. We had this assumption because they had been so adept in our past visits, of delivering high quality dinners and desserts. We ordered the fried chicken when we made the reservation because it was recommended by our local newspaper food article. Other than being a little confused with their policy of requiring all participants to have the same entree of fried chicken, we were expecting it to be fantastic. Un fortunately the whole dinner they provided was not that at all. The chicken was dry and tasteless, as it appeared to be re-fried. The sides were not very good as well. It was also VERY expensive. The cost of each entree was $45, which I calculate made the cost for one piece of chicken about $5! The best fried chicken is the one that is lightly fried and juicy. We were surprised this restaurant, which we had previously respected for their culinary skills, was not able to provide that, or even come close! It takes alot for my wife and I to leave Hoboken/JC. Not because we're super cool or anything....laziness mostly. But, on some great recommendations, we headed here on a Friday night and, wow, was it worth it. What a great spot! My wife and I didn't make a reservation but lucked out on getting seats at their kitchen bar. Here's the rundown of the dinner: - burratta and butternut squash to start. Delicious combo. Their most popular starter and rightfully so. - My wife had the brisket. She's a sharer and the fact I only got a bite says alot. Unbelievably tender and delicious. - I had the pork and beans. The pork tonight was pork belly. I'm usually not a repeat orderer but WHEN we go back, I'm getting this again! - Creme Brule was just ok but still pretty darn good. We came out from the City to visit some friends and were delighted to discover this gem. The wait staff was excellent and the open kitchen a warm and inviting presence. Cris DeOteris selected some great menu choices for us, including the chicken liver (what a surprise!) and the duck pie. We look forward to coming back again. read more

I was lucky enough to try half the menu as I ate with a big group. Everything we ordered was delicious: pork belly, brisket, seafood chowder, tilefish, chicken liver, roasted vegetables with burrata, roasted cauliflower with anchovies, pasta, roasted beets, focaccia, rice balls, creme brulee, vanilla cake, and zeppoles. Like many city transplants, I miss the restaurants, and this restaurant feels like a little bit of the city closer to home. Interesting dishes, and menu that evolves based on the season and fresh ingredients. It is BYOB and there is a wine store across the street. We'll be back with more friends. read more
