We had a great experience at Tzunun! There is a good vibe there, the deck is awesome, the staff was very attentive and friendly, and the food was delicious. It is also nice to have some more variety in the area. With a reservation at 5:30 we were able to start with some margaritas (good and tart) off of the Happy Hour menu that is available until 6pm. We also started with the chicharrones and ceviche. The chicharrones came with a delicious avocado puree and the ceviche came with prawns which I had never tried but loved. We shared the mole negro and al pastor tacos for our entrees. The mole negro had a substantial portion of juicy chicken, and the mole was thick, spicy, savory, and delicious. The tacos were unique with fresh pineapple and hand made tortillas that were some of the best I've ever had. Overall we had a wonderful time, left very full, and can't wait to return to try more of the unique things on their menu. While it is on the pricier side, it is a great place to celebrate a special occasion or if you are looking to treat yourself. read more

So the 2nd time around, what a difference. The difference was big enough to up the stars from my last trip & do a new review. This time around hubby tried the Frida cocktail & I had the Paloma - both were nicely done. We started with the yuca chips & the red salsa; the yuca chips were an interesting surprise, good texture, nice crunch & the right amount of salt. For the mains: hubby tried the chicken & dark mole: he sub out the potatoes fingerlings for rice & beans. The rice & beans were yummy, the mole was scrumptious, the chicken was a tad on the dry side, yet when dipped into the mole the dryness was gone. They now have crab taquitos, screaming goodness I was hesitant at first, but gave it a go & so glad I did. 3 taquitos, fresh crab, small salad, delicious salsa verde, this was a find! Unfortunately we didn't leave room for dessert, we'll have to go back. Service was great, their crew is on it, from refilling the water glasses to making one feel welcomed. I just don't know why I haven't been here sooner! First of I don't understand the bad reviews, this is not a typical a authentic mexican cuisine, if you something different this is it. Nothing I ate or drink to main dish was disappointing! So good Unreal! Again! Not a typical Mexican restaurant! Mexican food elevated to next level!! First time visiting, and I was surprised by the good food and drinks. We made a reservation, at arrival we were seated right away. The restaurant was not too busy. The decor is modern, and clean. We ordered the following: Pork Belly Gorditas: the gorditas were house made, with blue corn masa. The tamarind/guajillo sauce too sweet for my preference and did not complement the other ingredients. Yet, it was different. Mole Negro: DELICIOUS, mole had the right consistency and flavor. This is my favorite dish. Surf n Turf: also delicious, and traditional flavors. The sauce reminded me a lot of the chile relleno's tomato sauce. Kid's chicken plate: rice and grilled chicken were good, but the refried beans were too watery. Churros: this is the only not so good dish. Seems like the churros were fried while frozen, making them taste like cardboard and super hard. Drinks were good and prepared with fresh ingredients. Our go to for date night and now brunch! The margaritas are so good and don't get me started on the food. My favorite is the mushroom tacos but we also love the sashimi tostada as well as the queso. We recently went for Easter brunch and the chilaquiles and breakfast tacos were definitely the family favorite. They recently updated their chairs in the bar area which was a good improvement. Hoping for updated chairs or tables so you can sit a little more comfortably in the dining area. But definitely not stopping us from going again. read more

Tzunun has been a tope favorite restaurant in our home for some time now. And we are always happy with the food and service when we leave. The Ambiance is perfect. I have been there with friends to celebrate birthdays in the evening and plenty of lunch and dinner dates. It can be dressy or casual. Your choice. Today my husband and I went in for lunch after having seen a post about one of their specials on IG. The Steak Aguachile. We arrived and ordered some of our favorite usuals- drinks, queso fundido with chorizo, street corn, mushroom tacos and inquire on said steak aguachile plate. Martha who attended to us was very nice and explained that it was a "Special" and not a permanent menu item, but that she would inquire with the Kitchen on whether they had the necessary items to provide us the dish. We were able to get it. The explosion of flavor was beyond amazing. I really do wish it was permanently on the menu- because I would order it every time! Everything else ordered was great, as expected. Gabe who also served us was very attentive and also was able to provide an off the menu drink requested. The service was exceptional and while we are already repeat customers, today definitely warranted a review. read more

Nice ambiance, but the food is blah. The mole has a bitter taste. Annoying that the wait staff constantly trying to take your plate even though it is obvious there is still food on the plate. I just had to add more commentary. I'm shocked by most of the reviews saying how good the food is. It's been bugging me all week because the food is really bad. Taco Bell is better. Ok, I'm biased because I absolutely adore mexican cuisine. I travel to Mexico often so over the years I've grown increasingly more selective in where I dine. Sure, I'll do a tacquiera for lunch almost anywhere but dinner is where I start to get picky. Tzunun has got to be one of my favorite spots for Mexican in the Bay Area. While it's not always authentic, it's got that rare combination of fine dining latin cuisine with innovated tastes, good service and good ambience. Also mussels were incredible and I love that they take their cocktails seriously. Be sure to go when the weather is nice where you can sit on their lovely patio. I was really excited to try this place from the reviews but was really let down! I'm not sure if it was an off day for the chef, but the ahi crudo was nearly flavorless, the sopes were ok and the paella was subpar. Everything was lacking flavor. I had to ask for salt, some salsas and extra limes to try and doctor things up myself. 2 stars go to the ambiance - it's a beautiful setting for drinks. Amazing spot-definitely impressed with the place! Went there for the first time tonight after my wife insisted I try them out. Great look and feel inside the restaurant. The drinks were great, the service was great, but even better the food was amazing. Tried the burrata (which was a super unique almost mix with a sweet corn kind of past that was delicious) and the steak tacos, which was some of the best steak I've ever had in tacos. A had a few issues - did not honor the reservation, even after calling in twice to confirm - food is average compare to the price. - chicharrón felt like bought forma 7/11 - calamari was smelly - queso fundido was ok. Ordinary - empanadas were good - service felt overworked and over pushed. I saw the manager putting excessive amount of pressure to the staff and it was evident on how they treated us - the manager wanted to kick us out as soon as we paid. Even after dropping $1000 on a part of 12. - definitely will not come back this place wants to look high class but the manager was a rude and obnoxious. She instructed the staff to clean our tables while we were talking enjoying our coffee drinks. They removed everything without even asking if we were done. We overheard the manager telling the staff "this tables already paid get them off quick" We were like WHAT THE HECK. This is the worst service ever. read more

Mushroom tacos, cheese/elote empanadas, guacamole/tostadas, homemade tortillas, and the best way to assess the deliciousness of any Mexican food place... the rice and beans! All was super flavorful, although I do wish it all had much more spice! Or at least some spicy salsa options on the side. We had margaritas, and of course, a tequila flight (and of course, these are the only pics I got) - incredible list of tequilas and tasty drinks! For dessert we had the tres leches cake... it was glorious - perfectly dense cake, soaked just right. The only negative, which may decide when and how often I return, is the noise/sound. The acoustics are horrible... definitely not a place to go if you want to have a conversation without the constant "huh? what'd you say?" - perhaps just during busy dinner times. I love a loud and fun atmosphere - and would have liked some great music too - but this has more to do with the way sound carries in the space. Hope they do something about it (and then add some music). Overall, pleasantly surprised! Will return, but probably when it's not busy, or will sit in their patio. read more

My boyfriend and I ate here for a very late lunch today. We came for happy hour and we're greeted as soon as we walked in the door. The first thing we noticed was the cleanliness, beautiful interior, and friendly staff. We sat outside by the creek under a heater and it set such a beautiful ambience for our meal. Everything we had from the happy hour menu came out even more aesthetically presented than expected. The taste of each dish was even better.
