Drove back from Georgetown Florida a few days ago to face another Indiana winter. I know, I know we are supposed to go south this time of year. While in Florida we live on the St Johns river and are Airnb hosts and leave the river house during the high season. The St John is famous for blue crab and the shrimp run thick in the waters In August. All of our neighbors load their freezers with catfish, shrimp and bream (blue gill) in the summer and fall. Oyster roasts, fish fries and crab boils are part of the cultural landscape. Everyone has a relative that has a secret family seafood recipe. Speaking of secret seafood recipes,we visited the Ugly Crab for our anniversary this afternoon. The snow crab, crawfish and andouille sausage boil was out of sight! We ordered ours with butter garlic sauce. Outstanding!!!!! The corn on cob was excellent for Indiana in December and the red potatoes were perfectly cooked. It's not often that the far west side gets a new restaurant outside of the standard fast food or big chain options, making Ugly Crab a welcome addition. It's only been open for a couple weeks so it's been pretty busy during peak times and is a small establishment to begin with. We got there on a Saturday at 5 p.m. and were able to order right away and find a seat. It's a little pricey but the food is excellent and what you would expect for quality seafood. I shared a pound of crab legs and shrimp with my mom. We added corn and potatoes on the side and it was all served in a plastic bag and drenched in garlic butter. My mom laughed when she saw the meal came with bibs and plastic gloves but by the time we starting digging in she realized it was more than just a gimmick. I wish I had known the shrimp come with the legs still attached because I couldn't eat them. I realize how ridiculous this is because I loved the crab legs but I don't know - I just couldn't get past it. We'll still be back for the crab legs. read more

Awesome selection here. If you want crab on the westside, this is the place to go. Similar format to other walk-in seafood eateries I've been to throughout the country. You enter, order your food and they bring it to your table complete with a splatter mat (bib) and gloves. Several spices to choose from or mix them all together. Even the wings taste great here. Price is equivalent to other crab and seafood eateries. It's not McDonalds folks, it's the real deal. So, this is by far my favorite seafood restaurant. When you walk-in you go straight to the counter to order your food. They hand you your table number and you utensils and you pick your seat. For this place to be so good it's never overly crowded. I've never had to wait to be seated. The food takes about 15 minutes to come out and is served hot and ready. The corn is best in the Summertime because it's fresh. I advise to get the boiling sauce.... it's delicious . They can get a little busy during dinner time. Ordering was no-nonsense. We got the freast .However, we waited 15-20 mins for our food., but at-least they handed out croissants. We were craving seafood so decided to stop in. Surprisingly, this was my first seafood boil experience even though there are plenty of them back home. We were so hungry, we chose to order the largest dish & share. We chose the Super Seafood Combo which we thought included a half tray of mixed seafood meat. The pricing on the menu was updated to $108 with white-out before tax & not the $95 we thought it was as stated in their previous ad. We decided to order it anyway and waited patiently as our meal was prepared. They do have self-serve fountain drinks which we added to our tab and after tax ended up spending a total of $135. About 30mins later, our meal was served & we began to dig in. To our surprise, our order actually included two half trays not one like we originally thought. Each tray included one lobster tail, four crab legs, about 10 of each mussels, shrimp and crawfish. Along with corn on the cob, red potatoes, & two eggs. You able to choose the degree of spice: mild, medium, hot or none, and sauce flavor so we chose mild & Garlic Butter sauce. The entire meal was so filling and delicious, we ended up taking one entire tray for leftovers as we raised the white flag. Met two of my cousins here yesterday. I think I had my hopes up because I love seafood. I ordered a catfish filet just to try it. I also ordered the pound of shrimp that comes in a bag with a half ear of corn and 1 small potato. I chose the garlic butter for my sauce. After tasting it I discovered it lacked lots of flavor and seasoning. So I asked for the Cajun sauce. I had to pay for that. It did make it taste a little better. I have had other seafood from other places in Indy which I thought flavor and seasoning was better so I doubt seriously I will be coming back here again. It was very expensive. Saw good reviews on Yelp so we thought we'd give it a try. Not a fancy place and the decor was nothing special, but the food was fantastic! She had shrimp and crab, I had mussels and crab. Portions were large and all was cooked to perfection (and I used to cook in a Maine Lobster House). Then there was the sauce! OMG the sauce! My son loves Louisiana boils so we came for his birthday. The guys got a shrimp boil and loved it. I had a cat fish meal and my daughter got a kids meal. Ours meals were just ok. I also feel the staff did not want to give us an idea of how many people can typically eat from a boil. We have been to other places where they gave a range of the number of people that 1 would feed. It was also disappointing that they did not open until 12. Most places open at 11 am on the weekend. We had to kill 30 minutes. i came her for my mothers birthday and boy was that a mistake,ordered (2-1/2 shrimp 1/2 crab and sausage,2-1/2 crab 1/2 shrimp and lobster)that took 40 min and it was all overcooked and tuff and chewy,there are to many other places to go when i spend 175 dollars and get this kind of service and quality of food,next time we'll just go down the street to "red lobster" where they actually care about the customer and were not to another order to get through...next time i know i will truly think twice before wasting my time and money...thanks for ruining my parents birthday... read more

This was my first time here. Found it odd that you order first then have a seat. I ordered the seafood combo with garlic sauce & 1 with ugly crab sauce. Both tasted pretty much the same. The seafood all tasted great. I do wish there would have been more lobster & crab and less crawfish, sausage, egg, potatoes, corn. There was only 1 lobster, few crab legs. What a huge waste of money. We spent almost $100 for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. I would NOT recommend this place. First, the people that are standing at the front counter don't bother greeting you or make any attempt to help you -- as if everyone who comes in through the door knows how they work. I was psyched to find this type of restaurant in Avon. I had traveled to Florida around Christmas and went to a similar restaurant there. The Ugly Crab did not disappoint! We had the Crab legs and shrimp in their Boiling Sauce, a mix of all 3 sauces, and Medium heat. The heat was just right and the portions were huge with 1/2 lb. of each type of seafood you choose, corn cobette, and red potato. Two of us ate for $50, and it was well worth it for delicious seafood in the midwest. Advice: Go for the boiling sauce, wear the bib, dig in and grab a lot of napkins! They are OVER-PRICED. They only provide one small red potato and one half of a corn on the cobb with their boil bag. Their combo meals are ridiculously priced. It was so good we went back with some friends to treat them and they agreed with us. Thus far we have tried the shrimp and crawfish with the boiling sauce and medium sauce and then again with mild - the medium heat was a little too much for my wife and the mild even had a bit of a kick to it. No matter, everything was delicious. We also tried the king crab and regular crab and they were equally delicious: sweet, succulent, tender, and not stringy. We also ordered the calamari: perfect. The best part of all of the food though is the freshness. Again - I know - seafood in Avon - yes!! And as a bonus (not that they need a bonus) the staff is also super friendly. If you have been looking for a seafood meal and do not want the typical red lobster this place is for you. My first experience at this restaurant was very impressed.The hostess was very informative on making we knew what all came in our meal. My husband and I chose to get one pan because it has soooo much food in it. This pan can feed a family of 4 comfortably. We couldn't finish our pan that we had to take it home to finish . We really enjoyed it and went back two weeks later. I really didn't have any major issues with this restaurant. It was very clean even though you are eating very messy food.
