My manager recommended this spot to my team as a healthy pick since we were fatigued from deciding where to order from (and were regretting the health effects of a particularly large Chick Fil A order from the prior day's overtime dinner), and we really liked it. I ordered the protein lover rice bowl with spicy orange sesame sauce and Sichuan chili oil crunch, along with a coconut greens smoothie (spinach, pineapple, banana, lime juice, and coconut milk). The rice bowl was so filling and full of healthy greens, veggies, and well seasoned meat and tofu. You definitely finish your meal feeling satisfied, and not with that dreaded gut feeling that what you had was way too heavy or greasy for your palate. The coconut greens smoothie was also not too sweet, I was so excited to see that there was no added sugar in this!!! As someone who makes smoothies at home, I always hate when restaurants add sugar or sorbets to theirs. The dry spice rub is super tasty, but beware -- it packs some heat! I carelessly emptied the entire single serving container into my bowl, and I struggled at times to deal with the spice. Umami Express food tastes/looks pretty much the same as Ben's Fast Food, its sister portal at the Ruff Food Pickup ghost kitchen. They both market a "California fresh" type to-go box with a little meat/protein, lots of veggies, and proportional carbs. Not cuisine by any stretch- the chicken/pork is cooked ok but is nondescript in flavor (not umami, spicy, Asian or otherwise.) The flavor comes from the sauces, essentially salad dressings. The salad meal box works fine as a delivered corporate quick lunch option at the $10-12 price point. But this ghost kitchen is under the landing flight path for SJC, so the industrial parking lot feels and smells like jet fuel; grubby is the word that comes to mind. Pickup is austere/mechanical, with zero seating. Maybe their other locations throughout the state are more diner friendly. read more

Add lemon garlic dressing + pickled onions. I'm always satisfied: tasty, filling. This is a ghost kitchen, with mostly Uber delivery people hanging out - so no ambiance, but the folks working the kitchen are speedy and friendly. I like that they have an assortment of protein options with very reasonable prices. I ordered the Organic Tofu Rice and Cabbage Bowl for myself and the Pork Shoulder Rice Bowl for my boyfriend to eat later. I thought my bowl had a great amount of each item, and I really like that the tofu is organic. The Umami rice is also quite tasty. However, the Pork Shoulder Bowl had a pretty small portion of meat. I also get what people mean when they say the bowl itself isn't very flavorful. By itself it was very yummy, but on top of the rice bowl it was blah-tasting b/c their was not enough sauce In the soufflé cup. Of course, extra sauce is optional with an extra charge from .95 (chili oil) to sauces @ $1.25 extra. The rice was plentiful, water chestnuts crunchy, green onions and tofu cubes were the standouts. The rest were just colorful fillers. Hopefully, someday I'll give them another experience . However I'll need extra sauces. I have order twice from here off doordash as late night eats. My sister and I are following a diet and trying to incorporate more vegetables and clean protein. I have to say that the food that we got was absolutely amazing. It comes in a nice brown compostable box and inside it is a medley of perfectly cooked broccoli, water chestnuts and carrots in either a bed of delicious forbidden purple rice or fresh cabbage. Our order today, at 10:55 pm, was the Protein lover's bowl. It had perfectly cooked tofu, braised pork, and roasted chicken. It was so good and really hits the spot without making us feel so bloated. I've tried umami before and I will say both times I've tried it have been nothing special. The presentation of the food is I will say always the best part. The food always looks amazing and appetizing but it always falls short with flavor and texture. Might be the sauce that's lacking. I can't quite put my finger on what makes it not an enjoyable experience. The service is quick if you order ahead which is highly recommended because the location you pick your food up at is a weird warehouse type building that has multiple "restaurants" which is more like each one gets a small room to prepare the food and then it's placed in a locker where grubhub and Uber eats can pick up from multiple restaurants at one locker, so it's quite busy. Although it's clean it's just super weird as the ambiance is just a bunch of delivery food people waiting. Personally for the price I wouldn't recommend getting food from any of the locations based on the warehouse as it's cheaply made sold for a high markup. read more

The vegetables were bright and crispy while the meat was soft and tender. The bowl itself was so flavorful and everything balanced each other out so well! Hey Y'all! I'm so behind on reviews right now, especially after just moving to San Jose from Seattle and starting a new life but I just wanted to say that I was looking for a healthy lunch that is also affordable and since I ate a chicken bowl for breakfast, I wanted some greens and this place is the perfect place. They have a variety of bowls from green bowls and brown rice bowl and even having their own Umami rice. I'll be completely honest, this will probably be my go to place for food for the next couple weeks until I figure out my nutritionist and dieting for my workout plan but this place just blew my mind. I haven't even tried their Wagyu beef but only their Pork Shoulder Rice Bowl with their Garlic Sesame Soy Sauce and Szechuan Chili Oil Crunch. I definitely want to try their lemon sauce and spicy sauce sometime in the future as well but after moving to San Jose the food here has always been amazing and I haven't had the time to write about every amazing places but shoutout to Umami Express for being such a new and unique experience for me. read more
