Coconut greens drink ~ tasty and a hint of sweet!
    Elizabeth S.

I decided we would try Umami Express for our Friday company lunch at work today. The bowls looked enticing on Uber Eats. The Wagyu Beef Green Bowl was my bowl (or should I say box) of choice and the Coconut Greens drink was my chosen libation. I was very satisfied! The ingredients were fresh and the garlic sesame soy sauce on top with the Szechuan Chili Oil Crunch was a perfect combo. Flavors were all intact and my taste buds were happy! They automatically put sauces on the side which is perfect. I enjoyed the lightly sweetened Coconut Greens drink and would repeat this refreshment. Overall, I asked around and everyone liked their bowls whether pork, chicken, or wagyu beef- on rice or greens. It appears Unami Express is new on the scene and probably worked out their kinks since the earlier reviews. I guarantee we will be ordering again for Friday company lunches and likely for my own personal cravings!

Ordered on Uber Eats and never got my food. If they are that busy, they shouldn't put the estimate for 10-20 minutes.

They have a Yelp waitlist that you can sign into when you arrive. Restaurant is busy and loud inside, food is served very fast. We shared 4 dishes together and loved them all. We got the papaya salad, panang curry with chicken, pad kee mow with tofu, and orange chicken. Honestly hard to pick a favorite but I think the pad kee wow won. We had a lot of leftovers to take home which I will be eating for dinner. I have tried their yellow curry (ordered takeout) prior to visiting and it was also delish I will come back!

We finally decided to try it out yesterday with my group of 4. There was a bit of a wait when we came in around 8, but we didn't wait too long to be seated. There were plenty of tables inside and it didn't feel overly crowded despite all the tables being filled. Service was attentive and quick. We ordered: papaya salad, pad see ew with beef, yellow curry with chicken, and crab fried rice. Papaya Salad - Meh. 4/10. Papaya slices felt so long and difficult to eat, especially since they don't provide chopsticks. The serving size also felt so small for the price they charged. Flavor was just ok, I have had better for the price and serving size. Wouldn't get again unfortunately. Pad See Ew with Beef - 7/10. arguably probably the best dish out of the 4 we got that night. Albeit I wish the beef were more slices than cubes, flavor was still good and tasty! Brocolli slices were cooked perfectly and had a solid crunch to it. Crab Fried Rice - 6.5/10 - just ok. Nothing too memorable but a good carb option to have. Yellow Curry - 4/10 Meh as well. was very diluted in my opinion and didn't have much of a strong flavor to it. Overall decent restaurant with good service and options for a casual dinner but probably would go for their noodle options only next time!

I got: - bibimbap bowl: the egg is cooked so well, egg white is cooked thoroughly and egg yolk is still runny; the beef is thoroughly marinated and the veggies are crunchy Service is efficient and polite, and you get a buzzer to tell you when your food is ready. The food comes out pretty fast. The overall shared dining area is regularly kept clean inside Great Mall, there is great lighting and high ceilings, and there is plenty of parking in front of the food court entrance. I don't love the restrooms here -- it's hard to get the automatic sink faucets to stay on, and they give a tiny spurt of water on and off while you try to maneuver your hands around. The caulking in the sinks also clearly have a bunch of mold behind/in them, which is gross. Unfortunately other Great Mall bathrooms seem to be in the same condition. If you don't have to use the restroom, this is a great lunch spot!

Our menu included Soy Sauce Chicken, Spicy Pork, Japchae Noodle, Pan Fried Cubed Tofu, Shredded Cabbage and Carrot, Kimchi with shrimp, and fresh fruits. At first I thought the Soy Sauce Chicken was like the Chinese kind of cut-up chicken with skin and bones, but it's actually smaller pieces of chicken meat in soy sauce flavor. Kinda dry for me. The Spicy Pork is hella spicy! And when it's spicy, you can't taste any other flavors. Japchae Noodle was just plain mung bean noodle with soy sauce, no other ingredients. It's salty and the more you eat the saltier it gets. This is usually my go to dish but now I'm disappointed. Shredded Cabbage and Carrot is very light in flavor, just boiled chopped veg. It's useful to mix them with the over-seasoned meat. The cubed tofu is ok, probably my least complained dish. In general, it's a very simple lunch with little to highlight.

Both locations were very good, the San Jose one had a bigger menu though (both food and drinks) and it gave free soft serve in mini cones for dessert! I ordered some of the same dishes at both locations (two different sets of friends at each location), but the staples were the sauerkraut fish soup, garlic greens, cucumber salad and truffle fried rice! Highly recommend all!

The restaurant had a very nice environment to it. The service was fine. Our waiter was very nice but the hostess was OK but she definitely did not want to be there. After being seated, we ordered. The ordering style felt like a dim sum spot but that's fine. We ordered the Chongqing chicken, cucumber salad garlic greens and mushroom fried rice. The food was fantastic! The cucumber salad was the only one that we felt was OK but it tasted really good combined with the peanuts in it. The chicken was a different, tastier version of the dish but it was very tasty and was very enjoyable. The veggies were great and tasty, your standard veggies. However, the mushroom fried rice was amazing. I believe it's one of their newer items. That dish alone made the place worth it. I think it's really more of a 4.5/5 but leaning closer to a 5 because of the food. Probably would've been nicer if all the staff were as nice as our waiter, it'd be more of a 5. We'll definitely be back again.
