My husband placed an order at this location, but when I arrived to pick it up, I was informed that it had already been given to someone else. While I understand that mistakes can happen, a simple apology would have gone a long way in addressing the situation. Unfortunately, none of the three staff members I interacted with offered any apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. If management is reviewing this feedback, I encourage you to improve customer service standards, whether through additional training or staffing changes. I had a very uncomfortable experience today with our waitress, Maggie C. I came in with my 4-year-old daughter and we ordered a bento plate and two rolls to share -- a completely reasonable amount of food. From the start, she kept questioning whether we would finish everything and commenting on how much food we had, which felt unnecessary and intrusive. What made things worse was her behavior toward my daughter. She began exaggerating her facial expressions, puffing out her cheeks, putting her hands on her belly, and laughing about how much she loves to eat -- which came across as mocking and inappropriate. It felt like she was shaming us, and I had to respond and make it clear that we do not tolerate that kind of behavior. She then put a lid on my daughter's water cup even though my daughter said no. While I understand wanting to prevent spills, the approach was not respectful. I calmly explained to my daughter why a lid could help, but again, it was the waitress's delivery that felt off and overstepping. I also asked for another set of chopsticks, a fork, and a napkin for my daughter since we were only given one set -- and she never brought them. To top it off, when I went to pay, she stood right next to me watching to see if I would tip her. Given the entire experience, I chose not to. Overall, we felt very uncomfortable the entire time. I've never experienced something like this before, especially with my child present. I honestly regret not leaving earlier, but I was caught off guard in the moment. She also forgot our miso soup so now we called and asked to come pick it up... Update: we went back that same day to pick up our missing soup and spoke with the head Chef Alba. She was very amazing and apologetic for what had happened. She was able to listen and offered to make it right. She reassured us that this will be handled so that it does not happen in the future. I'm glad I got to speak with Chef Alba and we look forward to giving Umi another shot in the future. Thank you. Came in the other day as a birthday celebrant and this place continues to provide great service and serve delicious food! I wanted to try something different so I got the SUSHI BOAT B which came with Sashimi, Sushi, 2 Specialty Sushi Rolls and 1 Regular Sushi Roll plus a choice of 4 Miso Soup or Salad definitely a shareable item but the best part is that it comes in a boat! My niece was visiting from Texas and decided she just "had to have sushi". She sees it all over social media and she's always been very brave about trying new foods so I didn't mind taking her. We ordered a couple different things to try and she wanted to try the salmon sushi (literally just raw sushi on a bit of rice) and I think it was not what she was expecting. It wasn't the sushi that was bad--it was all delicious--my recommendation for allowing a young heathen to try sushi is to start with one of the rolls, not throw them into the deep end like I did. Because she did like the rolls! Personally, I love the salmon sushi. My only criticism was that it was really not busy at all (maybe one other couple there) and it took quite a while to get anything. My daughter got an eel roll and she loved it, I ordered salmon sashimi, and a custom roll which they executed perfectly. My son had the best udon we have ever had and I don't know what my husband had he wasn't sharing! They had a very affordable deal that could be mixed and matched with a lot of delicious options. I always walk in and go straight to the bar. Party of one. Today I ordered the lollipops with no avocado and the crispy rice biscuits also with no avocado. I order without avocado because I am allergic to it. I always sit at the bar so never a wait. The chef here is extremely clean. The entire restaurant is really clean no complaints. Service is always great. My food was presented perfectly. I asked for sriracha, eel sauce, wasabi, and ginger. They did not skimp on the ginger which is perfect. I keep on returning not only because of the good service but the flavorful perfectly prepared food. This is my go-to place when in the mood for sushi. Umi Sushi has become my favorite sushi restaurant in Bakersfield. I love the variety of rolls that they have. I had the crispy rice biscuit as an appetizer and the pink bear roll for my main. The crispy rice biscuit is exactly how it sounds-- crispy but topped with delicious tuna and avocado. The pink bear roll is one of my favorites too. Also, very flavorful. The service was good. Since I came on a busy day it was a little confusing to know if there's one line for take out and one line for dine in. No one was available at the front to clarify since they were busy handling the carry-outs. Additionally, the ambiance was nice but booth wasn't the most comfortable. The upholstery is just patched, but I hope it gets replaced soon. The patches weren't the most pleasant to sit on. read more

The night started with excitement and I hopes. My coworkers raved about this sushi place and I had to try it. Unfortunately I think we went on a bad night. The food was good when we got it. Nothing that stood out to be better than any other place in town. My issue was with service. We had a group of six and each ordered on three checks. The server did not bring the miso until almost the end of our meal. The rolls that came out to us did not belong to us. It was ment for another table. When we finally did get our rolls we had no utensils. When we asked for help the server left a stack of small plates and chopsticks at my end of the table and walked away. I passed them out so others can start eating. At this point I still had not received my roll or miso. We tried to ask for more help and were met with an irritable smile from the server. again, the food was good when we all finally got what we needed. ambience was fine They had an NFL game playing and no loud music which I enjoyed. not once did they try to refill our drinks or ask if we needed anything we had to call them over multiple times and finally asked for the check. We all went over our receipts to make sure we didn't get charged for the rolls we received at the beginning of dinner. And we all noticed an 18% gratuity that was automatically applied to each check. After my overall experience, I don't think I will be returning. Please try it. Maybe you'll have a different experience. It is quite a drive out by Stockdale high school. I'm usually not one to comment, but we've been eating here for years and the quality of food we received today was some of the worst sushi I've ever had. The rice felt stale, the yellowtail was discolored, and both our rolls tasted like they had cream cheese in them when we didn't order anything with cream cheese. My husband and I were in the mood for some sushi and decided to order takeout from Umi. The server on the phone was friendly as I placed our order. I chose the mixed tempura and the spicy rainbow roll. My husband ordered an avocado roll, a cucumber roll and a double veggie roll. The tempura had a nice mixture of vegetables along with two shrimp. The tempura batter kept a bit of its crunch despite getting it to go. The spicy rainbow roll was tasty and basically what you'd expect it to taste like. My husband enjoyed his avocado roll and double veggie roll. The cucumber roll was a bit different as it had the seaweed on the outside and only had four large rolls in it. This was my first time here. My daughter loves sushi, and she chose this place for her birthday dinner. Our waitress was adorable, very attentive, and friendly. I loved the open concept. The place is beautiful and clean. The tables look like they can be put together for bigger parties as well. The sushi rolls were delicious! I don't typically write negative reviews, but this experience needs to be addressed. My two sons and I came in and sat at the sushi bar, looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, no one acknowledged us. After waiting about seven minutes without any greeting, we moved to a table and found our own menus. We then waited another six minutes while several servers walked by, yet no one welcomed us or checked in. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but a simple "I'll be right with you" or "I'll be there shortly" would have made a big difference. Unfortunately we decided to leave. Customer service goes a long way, and unfortunately, that was lacking during our visit. I will not be returning. I've been to many sushi restaurants where guests are greeted promptly and made to feel welcome. I hope this is something that can be improved upon. read more

This is our favorite sushi place in town! We absolutely love the chill vibe here and the wonderful staff. The service is great and the food is amazing! We love the shrimp fried rice (best in town), the dragon on fire 1 & 2, Viva Vegas, Cali Land, Tiger, Monkey brains and so many others. Pretty much anything off the menu. Everything is fresh and has terrific flavor. My favorite is the Cali Land but I'm a sucker for anything with cream cheese and avocado. And then deep fried, yes please! I did an UberEats order of this place, and maybe that was my mistake, but I really wanted to love this place. I ordered the Cowboy (has filet mignon strip on top of sushi) and the avocado/cream cheese/fish with sushi rice and slightly deep fried appetizer. The "filet mignon" did not taste like filet mignon, as I had two different pieces that had the hard chunk of gristle, I had to spit out... keep in mind, it's a good cut of steak, plus thin, so I honestly expected none. Great location in walking distance from home. I frequent this restaurant a lot just because it's nice to walk to and from. Here's my honest review from a combination of several visits not just today's. It's not overly fancy inside kinda boring strip mall sushi restaurant vibe- not that is ugly it's just not a wow this place is beautiful inside. The service is always just ok, I've never had amazing service or horrible service either- I always leave wishing I had better service but never bad enough to complain to management or anything. The menu is pretty standard nothing really amazing but still enough to have a good meal. Last con I promise, the prices are a little high in my opinion but to be honest sushi is pretty expensive to me every where I go. So the sushi is always very good! It's always prepared very clean and always looks so fresh and amazing! The rolls are usually pretty good sized and they are not skimping on your roll! The lady that waited out table was the sweetest soul. She made the experience SO special for our kids. Don't keep someone of that nature in the back unless she loves cooking of coarse. This time it was the sushi chef telling me it's not his fault and stuff (I didn't understand his accent). I personally feel that for a restaurant as such, food is secondary to service. I come here on lunch often, and it's usually pretty good. I like the chicken Yakisoba, which varies every time unfortunately. Sometimes it's really good, other times it's ok. It has a sweeter taste, so I get it spicy with no onion or mushroom. The chicken thickness varies also. Today it was thicker than before, so I felt like it was kind of chewy. Also the portion was a lot bigger, you can kind of see the difference in the pictures. (Same exact order) The service is typically good.
