Been in South Bay for about 8 years and I always enjoy Underground. It's my go-to sports bar with the fellas. They have gotten even better lately with Facebook message promos with pretty bomb deals which never get old. If you're looking to have a fun night out, watch a UFC fight, and take your boy's money in darts or pool, you found your spot. P.S. Please bring back the Cheese Curds. Perfect place to watch football games, etc but it is incredibly loud if you're hoping to sit down with a group and engage in conversation. Cool place for darts or pool. I would recommend this place for a day of drinking and playing bar games. We had a few appetizers. Good but not great. Standard bar apps. read more

This place SEEMS cool and fun...but when you have 1 waitress waiting on all the tables in your establishment on a Sunday evening with the Sunday night football game on and the NLCS game on...you're either a 1-2 star establishment. ANOTHER NOTE TO MANAGEMENT. Are you trying to save money? Cause you've just lost some new customers if you don't change your ways of your slow service. Sorry...this isn't the waitress' fault. But everything seemed to take forever. Even the food that we ordered never came out. Thanks waitress for canceling it for us...we had to go. No free parking, pay the meter and don't get a ticket. A fun place to hang out, have a beer, maybe play some darts, pool, or bar shuffleboard. A good crowd, less frat boys and Ed Hardy douches. TVs for watching the games. Our server was attentive and friendly. Parking is definitely an issue but with some effort you can find a 2-hour meter that goes until midnight (or cab it - plenty of those on the street). read more

This place is okay. But it's inexpensive so that makes it a-okay. 2 beers and a shared appetizer sampler ran about $22 - it doesn't get much better than that. It has kind of a strange location.. down an alley and up the stairs.. so you definitely don't get any sort of view or benefit of being by the beach from this pub. We went on a Saturday late afternoon and it was pretty calm, but I can imagine it getting very rowdy during a game or late at night. Kind of a dingey vibe, but it's the South Bay. I liked that the booths have private TV's, but there aren't many of them so I imagine you'd have to reserve ahead to get one during football season. The sampler was okay... nothing special, your run of the mill potato skins and french fries and chicken wings.. but it did the trick and satisfied our hunger until dinner. read more

Dive bar located in Hermosa Beach. Simple place to go and grab a drink. Serves food and littered with locals that live in the area I went with the BLT served on a brioche bun. Lol apparently LA loves brioche buns. It was decent not the best but not the worst. I would come again and chill. Would be even better if they had outside seating. The Underground televises just about every sport you can imagine. Hockey, soccer, rugby, basketball, football, tennis are only a few of the sports. It is a unique place because it has no affiliation to 1 school or 1 pro team. Rather, it's a place where people come to watch their favorite team(s) play. What's even more entertaining is when people from opposing teams sit close to each other and trash talk with one another. It's all friendly and not malicious and just adds to the overall vibe of the place. Different games are playing at the same time so different groups of people are cheering (or booing) all of the time. It's great. The only draw back is that it's hard to focus on the game that you went to watch. The waiting staff is very nice and they make sure that you have plenty of drinks and food. The bartenders are also diplomatic with the games, making sure that everyone can watch their game on the closest tv to them. Also, no one hassles you about how long you've stayed at a table, so if you want to watch 1 game or 4, you're more than welcome to. If you want to take a break from watching the games, there are dart boards and a pool table to occupy you time. Whatever your favorite team is or what your favorite game is, the Underground will be sure to please. read more

I have literally been coming here my entire life. I learned to play pool by standing on the pool tables when I was 3. Love this place. The name may have changed but it's still awesome. The only reason they didn't get all 5 stars is because the menu changed and they got rid of two of my favorites; bangers 'n mash and shepard's pie. read more

I love the Underground because it's off the Pier. That's enough, but the fact that Kelly and Seth are the owners and their from Wisconsin makes it a great place to watch Badger football on Saturdays and NFC central football on Sunday. The staff is fun and excellent and professional and they make great drinks. The crowd is a mix of young and old and isn't the kind of "club kids" you see on the Pier these days. Plus, where else can you get brats!! I was never a big fan of sauerkraut, but if you put the kraut on the brats with the mustard, you have the best food ever! I've been here once and that's probably going to be enough, if I can help it. Not a big deal, but when we walked in, we were redirected back out and in through a second entrance because they were only checking IDs at one. Fine. I can understand having a second entrance for people who don't still look nineteen like I do, but not the greatest first impression. The big deal was then waiting at the bar while the bartender all but cleared out our half of the bar while managing to skip us twice, and then having her yell at us when my date raised his hand to try to get her to finally look at us. If I was a bartender, yeah, it would be extremely annoying to have anyone waving at me, even politely, for my attention ever, but it's also pretty annoying being passed over two going on three times as the bartender goes down the table helping people without ever making eye contact with you. The bar looked pretty cool, otherwise! And if you like being yelled at by strangers, it's great! read more

I ended up here by chance in 2009 and had such a great time with the locals that I stayed over (cancelled flight and got another flight a couple days later) night at the Hampton Inn across street and came back the next night to hang out some more. Great spot. read more

If you want to get away from the Hermosa crowd, then come to this very dive-y dive bar. It's a little bit more subdued of a crowd than that of the one on the main strip. Came here at around 11:30 pm-midnight on Saturday night and the narrow space that it's in wasn't filled up. It gets a lot of traffic from people walking in the back alley, but the entrance is a little hard to find. It does feel like you're walking toward and underground bar if you go in through the front way. Ask my how to get there, and I shan't tell you because I don't know how and it was my first time there, I can tell you that it's walkable distance to Paisano's, which stays open pretty late on the weekends. read more

I went to this place this weekend and somebody who was there told me to "check my bank statement" the next morning because the staff at this bar regularly gives themselves extra tips by changing the tip you write in on your receipt. Sure enough, this morning I woke up and I was overcharged. We had two drinks ($12) and I tipped well ($4), so I should have been charged $16. The receipt is actually still in my purse so I know this to be true. Instead, my statement indicated that I had been charged $20. Clearly, these people rely on patrons NOT checking their bank statements the next day, so make sure that you do! Or better yet, don't go here. read more

Every time I come here late at night, like clockwork, there's a drunk girl in the parking lot yelling at me. I can't understand what she says; is she cursing me? Is she into me? Does she need a cab? As I step over her vomit and pick her off the floor, thoughts of no good enter one side of my brain and promptly exit out the other. There's plenty of taxis available, it's Hermosa...so I hail her a cab, give her breath mint and send her off, with my best friend's phone number, just in case she's pregnant. Anyways, the Underground (as in London Underground) used to be called Bestie's, after George Best, one of the greatest soccer players ever who played for Northern Ireland and Manchester United. Well, when he was playing in the USA for the Los Angeles Aztecs, he opened Bestie's, now called The Underground, an English themed restaurant. Now it's a pretty nice place to chill out and have a beer and not act pretentious. But personally I like watching English football, that's soccer here. Good food, great staff, a nice place to spend some time if everywhere else in Hermosa and Manhattan is too busy or full of tools. read more

They were busy but going the drinks after a few minutes. 30 minutes after our food didn't show, I talked to the bartender who assured me it would just be a minute or two more. 20 minutes later, I asked for my money back since we never got our food. She ran my card and what do you know... no money ever credited to my account. Way to rip off your patrons. Stopped in last Saturday for the Mayweather/Canelo fight and some food. $10 cover, which was cheaper than the wannabe sports CLUB down the street with ear-splitting music blowing out their speakers at all hours of the day. The five of us squeezed into the last available table and waited. And waited. And waited. FINALLY the waitress for our section - Denise - came up, took our drink order, and disappeared. Came back awhile later . . . to take our drink order again. And it was all downhill from there. Wen she returned a third time (to hopefully let us order some friggin' food) she walked off without warning after only three people had asked for food. When she continuously bypassed our table, ignoring our attempts to get her attention, I actually had to get up out of my chair, chase her down in the crowded bar, GRAB her and DRAG her back, explaining that we'd never finished, and would all actually like to eat!!! Meanwhile, only half the drinks had by this time arrived. Finally the food came. Oh, wait - I mean MOST of the food. My friend's order NEVER showed up. We waited half an hour, asked Denise, who snapped that "I can only carry so much out at one time!" - seriously?! asked for a manager at least three times and who NEVER SHOWED UP, was brought the WRONG order, and FINALLY got the poor guy's food after everyone else had eaten and had their dishes cleared away. Never have I ever been anywhere and met with such rudeness and incompetence, and been treated with such horrible disrespect. I've never asked to speak to a manager - THREE times - and just been blatantly ignored. I don't know who the crap whores are that actually run that place, but I can tell you they're scraping the absolute bottom of the scum barrel during the hiring process for their staff. Bottom line: stay away. You've SO many more options here in Hermosa Beach. Don't patronize ineptitude. read more

I have been here a few times and it is pretty consistent for a pub. I think the beer selection is pretty blah to call itself a pub. Anyways...I am posting this because I went late last night after leaving a comedy club in the area to watch the Penn / Fitch fight. I am obsessed with all things MMA so I would normally love this place for that. I literally sat in a corner to watch the re-air of the fight and minded my business. Last call was at 1am...no issue. Right around 1:15 they started telling people to leave. There was 1:12 minutes left in the last fight between Fitch / Penn and it was a nail biter. The bouncers that had seen me watch all night were absolutely going to let me watch the last 72 seconds of the fight and after tipping $10 on a $17 tab I didn't expect what happened next. The overweight bartender that always seems to have an attitude told me I had to leave although there were over 25 people still there and some girls still drinking. When I asked if I could just watch the end he told me the outcome of the fight and told me I should just go. I was pissed and said that was a "dick move man" and he told me I should go to anger management and that I needed to leave. The bouncers (must be of lesser value there) looked at him like he was an a##hole. I won't go there again just because I didn't appreciate the fact that that I was treated that way and that guy is such a douche. The drinks were cheap and the place is okay but unless you are an over served chick that is looking to get laid they don't really care if you are having a good time. read more

Saturday night, I was with a small group of friends who decided to swing by this local hotspot for a few beers. Underground had a long(ish) line, but was worth the wait. The bouncers get big points from me for not letting people cut the line... (I know I'm old and grouchy, but I always find that behavior very entitled... Kids these days, amiright?) Anyway, once we made it inside, we decided to pop down at a table to enjoy a few beers. The place was pretty packed, but was a fun scene. There was dancing in a nearby (but separate) area for anyone who felt like it, and for my crew, there was a chill bar area to get away in. The bartenders were quick and attentive, and the service was great. I'd definitely visit again, if I find myself back in the area! While we didn't venture over to check them out, there were loads of bar games available too. Perfect place for a night with friends! read more

Underground is the best bar in Hermosa that isn't on the pier. It's kind of hard to say anything that already hasn't been said. So I'll leave you with this anecdote. I went to Underground with my roommate and a couple of girls, it was packed on a Saturday night. There was a biker gang hanging out. I don't remember the name of the gang and I don't really care. But they were sooooo adorable. They all had on little matching jackets and silly little mandanas. A bunch of them had beards and tattoos and some were wearing sunglasses AT NIGHT! OMG! So Cute. Anyway, there was this one, and he was a bit younger then the other bikers. I think I'll call him babycakes. Babycakes was talking mad trash, possibly because he had about 8 bikers backing him up, most of whom I'm pretty sure had knives on them. He wasn't talking trash to me or anyone in my group specifically, but he was talking trash about everyone in general. He was talking trash about Hermosa, specifically Hermosa Douchebag culture. As a pretty firm example of a Hermosa frat-boy douchebag I was mildly offended, as was everyone else in there. Because lets face it, Hermosa is full of douchbags. So together, us Hermosa douchebags united, along with the bouncers, who are mostly UFC-following, Affliction wearing, card-carrying douchebags as well, and chased these guys out of there and basically messed them up. The Underground is a perfectly acceptable Hermosa Beach Pub. It's fairly British in the decor, sports and beer choices and is a great place to go to get away from the madness of Pier Ave and not blow tons of money. My only bitch is that it's so INDOORS. Hermosa Beach is all about beach to me and if I'm drinking in the general vicinity I want to be reminded of that. Patrick Malloys, Hennessy's, Fat Face Fenners, Sangria.. all have the open patio and fresh ocean air. Even the Hermosa Ave bars manage to keep their connection with the beach. You walk into Underground and you feel.. well... indoors. That's great if your in London or Manchester but in HB? Show me the patio! read more

I came here one night with a group of friends who wanted to go to Dragon (yuck!) but luckily there was a long, unmoving line there so we came to Underground instead. It was a chill place and we came in some secret special way through this weird hallway and into the backdoor. No line, no cover! I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to enter from this door, but if you are feeling adventurous, give it a try! No ID check either. Anyway. Beer, pool, darts, sports TV. All around a chill place. I think I paid like 5 bucks for a bud lite, which I think is kindof ridiculous but I suppose it's the standard nowadays. Most of my friends who grew up in the South Bay ended up seeing someone they knew from back in the day- that's the kind of local, chillin' place Underground is. A good, relaxed time, and conducive to getting obnoxious if so desired! read more

Go to Tim, he's the best bartender in the world :) The waitresses are all super sweet, the regulars are lots of fun, and the super cool bouncer is so tough and strong and my future beachside roommate! That's how you know you're at a neighborhood gem. Everyone there is like family, and they treat you like family as well. Endless spaghetti on Sunday nights. Good looking people all around. Pool tables, shuffleboard, jukebox, and darts - a game which I am now the master. All due to my hours of determined and perseverant training at The Underground - and help from my friend Jameson. While visiting some friends in Redondo Beach over Labor Day weekend we came over to Hermosa Avenue to walk through the street festival. Parking was absolutely ridiculous because multiple blocks were closed off causing gridlock throughout the entire surrounding area, but once we finally found a spot the real fun began! I'd heard from a friend that Underground Pub was the best sports bar in the South Bay so once we found it we walked through the Hermosa Ave entrance that led us into the rear of the building. One of the door men told us we had to walk through to the next street and enter through the "front entrance". Even though the address for Underground is listed as Hermosa Ave, the entrance is in the back alley on Palm Drive. This pub has TVs all throughout the place with each one showing some kind of sporting event. While we were there they were showing college football, NFL preseason highlights, baseball, soccer, and tennis. We even had a small TV on the wall of our booth all to ourselves. They had several dart boards, pools tables, two full bars, and even an old school red telephone booth to keep with the UK theme. My friend had never had a Car Bomb before so I figured what better place than a British pub. Our waitress brought the drinks over fast, we slammed them down, then chilled for a bit while watching football. Thirty minutes or so later we were on our merry way! read more

Went to this truly "hole in the wall"-ish bar Sunday - first NFL game day of the season ON ACCIDENT. I wish all accidents ended this well. Didn't have enough time to hang around but played a game of darts and loved the atmosphere. It was around noon and a great spot to get in from the sun, enjoy a drink and cheer on your favorite (or against your least favorite) teams. Sports bar in Hermosa that is a really cool place to hang out in. During the week it has a very divey feel to it because it's pretty quiet. On the weekend it can get very crowded but it's still a more enjoyable place than the more touristy bars like sharkeez.
