Ordered Pork Adobo Plate & Ahi Katsu Roll Was told that they ran out of Ahi Katsu Roll. It's their number one raved food item and they didn't have it. Bummers! So, I just got the pork adobo plate. Got it warm, along with warm Mac salad. I guess it's their "thing". I've seen other reviews saying their Mac salad is room temp and yes, it is. In case you didn't know, room temp mac salad tastes pretty nasty. On to the pork adobo, the meat was cooked well, it was soft, vinegar taste was adequate. I like my adobo tangy, but this was good enough to pass as adobo. No unnecessary amount of black pepper balls or bay leaves (thank you!) The thing I noticed though, after swallowing a portion, was the feeling of oil/fat left in my mouth. I continued to eat, mixing my rice into the adobo gravy; it was delicious, but the fatty film left in my mouth made me lose my appetite. I barely ate half of the portion that was given to me and a closer look at the adobo in it's juices showed a thick layer of liquid fat. No amount of white rice could make it any more savory. I felt like throwing up and threw away the rest of the plate. Bonus Tip when making adobo! Cook the meat and let it cool in the fridge. Then, can scrape off the thick layer of fat that solidifies and then finish preparing the rest of the dish. Now, it's not overwhelmed with fat. :) read more

I remember when Upscale used to exclusively just be a food truck down that small alley road.... and I am SO HAPPY that they finally expanded to a full blown kitchen! Their food has always been super tasty. Normally, places tend to lose their quality/taste when they expand, but not Upscale. My usual go-to order the garlic ahi steak with bomb sauce. If you like ahi, and garlic, you'll definitely love this. The ahi steak is cooked to perfection... crisp on the outside, and nice and soft on the inside. Though, the sauce is what makes the plate! I'm not sure what they used in the sauce, but it's buttery, has a very mild spice to it (maybe sriracha). The roasted garlic on top just makes the plate PERFECT! The plate comes with a large piece of ahi steak on a bed of rice, an extra scoop of rice with furikake, and a side salad. Terrible terrible terrible. We ordered the Garlic Steak and ahi katsu. The meat quality was poor. The steak had no flavor even tho it had garlic butter. The salad they gave was all spinach. The ahi katsu was rushed so the outside was overcooked and inside undercooked. Tbh it was the most disgusting plate I've ever had. This place is just getting worse by the day. I come a lot only bc it's the only place opened late night. One time I came and the burger was frozen in the middle. I ordered the signature grilled ahi steak with the bomb sauce. My wife ordered beef stew. A little pricey: The ahi plate ran about $15 and the beef stew, around $12. Not unexpected though in today's economy. Plus I'm willing to pay the 24/7 premium. A few customers were waiting for their orders and more customers arrived after our order was taken. Took about 15 minutes when our food was ready, so the entrees are made to order. The ahi steak came with a large mixed greens salad, rice with furikake, and the ahi itself was covered with bomb sauce and soft roasted garlic cloves. It was truly bomb. The exterior is somewhat grungy and dismal but thought I'd try it because many good reviews. Pros: the portions are big and cheap. I had fried saimin which was fresh homemade noodles they probably got from the local noodle manufacturers nearby. Cons: teri beef was very fatty so the net edible meat is less. The staff could be friendlier, especially between 3-5am, but the beef stew is tasty. It would be better if they added more beef and removed the fat.
