Time for a semi-yearly check in for the Urban Plates in Brea, Ca. This place is still great! The food is consistently good, the place is kept clean, and the staff there is excellent. There are people who stand out in making the dinning experience what it is, and I'd like to thank them in no particular order. If you eat there the food is so good but if you get it to go or online order it it's alright. My family got the food subscription thing that they offer online and they really like it. Their salmon with mashed photos and asparagus is perfect every time I get it and it doesn't make me feel bad after! Definitely recommend urban plates if you don't want to feel heavy. read more

Tonight I ordered online to have my order ready at 830pm. I love Urban plates I always tell my friends how great the food is. However I was very disappointed with the lack of customer service received tonight. Walked in waited at the pickup station, they were not busy, I waited made eye contact with the young lady behind the counter checking 1 customer out, she did not acknowledge me. The young man who was also behind the counter who totally ignored me. After 10 minutes, I reached over the counter grabbing my bag signed the receipt and politely informed the young lady, since you have not acknowledge me I'm taking my order (which was paid for online) and left the store. I then called the store to speak to a manager and was informed there was not a manger working but a lead, explained my concerns to her and immediately she wanted to offer me a free food voucher. There was nothing wrong with my food, I declined and asked her to fixed the lack of customer service, without customers most of us would not have jobs!!! I usually order the chicken tender salad. Always good. This time I ordered the grilled chicken Cobb salad. It was good, came with avocado. The only problem I had was, I ordered a side of fries, which are new to UP, but at $4.75 it was a very very small portion. I estimated it was the equivalent of a single potato less than avg in size. Have been coming here for awhile. My family loves the mash potatoes. I always love the chimichurri steak. The sauce is delish. It is different since the pandemic but it still has its great main dishes. You can't go and see them cook like before but it's still good eats. All staff was very kind. Food came out in a timely manner. Wait staff was lovely as well; Francisco is a sweetheart. Outdoor dining was comfy and clean. Always a great spot for a healthy quick bite. If you're looking for a hip, guilt- free place to eat with no hassle, this is your spot! First of all, it's located in the same lot as whole foods and mendocino farms and i've never had an issue with parking! Secondly, their service is fantastic! When I thought I lost my car key, one of their team members willingly searched the entire restaurant for me! Thirdly, their food is delicious! Similar to a tender greens feel, except the difference is that they make your food right in front of you! What a cool concept! It makes you feel like your food is extra fresh! Five stars for James Le! I'm going to start off by saying there really needs more people in the service industry like him. I've been to Urban Plates in Pasadena a few times and I really love the food there so when we were in Brea and I saw Urban Plates, I suggested we go there. We ordered our food but they didn't have bread prepped so we had our plates and waited for them to finish toasting the bread. It took so long that our food got cold. When we brought our food to the front, we told James and he immediately went to correct it. I know it's annoying to deal with customers like us who won't just take whatever lol but he really stepped up and handled every minor issue with grace and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. James needs to be promoted. read more

Food is always great at this location. wasn't sure which drink I wanted Erin was nice enough to let me sample one of them. Also when I asked for red pepper flakes she went out of her way to got to the back and grab them instead of just telling me they don't have them. This is the best cafeteria style food there is. $12 plus tax for a huge plate of nourishing food can't be beat! I got the albacore plate that comes with two sides. You'll be able to see all the sides displayed since it's a cafeteria style. Get your main entree and step over to your left and there is another area with a server who'll give you two choices of sides. You can also get the bread that it usually comes with or just opt out for it. I recommend the two sides I got: brussel sprouts and broccolini. They were all so nicely seasoned and paired well with my albacore, which was medium rare. The server will ask if you want salt and miso sauce on it before serving. There is a self-serve area near the water after you pay with other condiments like ground pepper and hot sauces. read more

Love this place! It is like the cafeteria vibe. You have your salads on one side, sandwiches and soups on another, sides and main entrees down the line. It can get busy and chaotic, but it can move pretty quick. Love the healthy but really delicious options. I really enjoy their sides here like there roasted carrots and beets, sesame broccolini, beet salad with goat cheese and the curry tofu veggie entree, lentil soup and caprese sandwich. They have delicious drink refreshers and you have to get there mango tart! Omg! Like it is a must here and I can't not have it, it is so AMAZING!!! I loved my first impression of this place due to enthusiasm of all who worked here. We were just looking at the menu outside when the host opened the door and offered to answer any questions. The next greeting we got was when getting in line - the next person gladly explained how to order. The cooks were all nice and excited to present their station to us, and offered small samples. Easy sell for me since their food tasted great. Onto to the food: I ended up with the Chimichurri Grass Fed Steak with the sauce on the side, broccoli, Roasted Brussel Sprouts, and Rainbow Carrots and Beats. I really really enjoy urban plates, especially this location! :) I love their wide selection of choices they offer, but I would really recommend the grass fed steak. The steak is cooked exactly how I like (medium rare) and the bread and vegetables are always fresh! It looks and tastes exactly like a home cooked meal. Yum! The employees are really nice and caring and always strive to do their best and more, especially Francisco the manager! He assisted me while I was eating outside and made sure I had all I needed for a wonderful experience here. Thank you Fransisco! I'd describe Urban Plates as a high end cafeteria with great food. There's both indoor and outdoor seating and it has this great feel of eating formal food in an informal setting. I can easily spend $28 -30 with a drink, entree and dessert. My go-to is the chimichurri steak with any of the 2 sides (mashed potato, sweet potato, etc. ) and a small cup of mac and cheese. Desserts I'm still figuring out what I like but so far I've tried the hummingbird cake and lemon coconut cake. I loved the hummingbird cake and initially wasn't too fond of the lemon coconut but then it grew on me. Definitely give Urban Plates a try if you're in the area and I'm pretty sure you'll be a fan and come back. read more

I used to LOVE Urban Plates. We dined there frequently, and I've eaten most of the meals on the menu. The all-time favorite was the braised beef with mushrooms- so good that I've taken it to many potlucks. So imagine my disappointment when my takeaway order was opened (at the potluck), and each of the small containers contained a watery, souplike substance with a few shreds of beef and some mushrooms. A TV dinner would have been more impressive than this miserable showing. We're in a recession, sure- but company QC is non-existent to allow this out the door. Gone is the rich, thick, beefy braise of the pre-recession era. Oh, and I'M gone, too. read more
