I have mixed opinions about this place, which I tried for the first time tonight. The atmosphere looked great, cozy, yet bustling, but relaxed, so I had to try it. I was craving fish, and they had two, albacore and salmon--I had the salmon. It's cafeteria style, like Chipotle, but with different stations, which isn't a dig, because I think it can work well. My main beefs (no pun intended since I had fish) were that the salmon was not hot--their food looks like it was sits there a while, definitely not fresh off the grill--and that just about everyone had the attitude like they were a worker in a cafeteria--scripted questions, little eye contact, just shoveling food around, filling orders. Now for the plus side, the sides were delicious (the roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts), the salmon was 4 out of 5 stars for taste, I love that they had a large selection of juices and non-soda beverages (take note other restaurants, the world needs more non-soda/lemonade/iced tea beverage options like this!), and the sodas they did serve were craft (Maine Root). The people cooking and serving up the food look like they cared, handled the food excellently, and the food presentation was really good. Except for that lukewarm salmon. I sat outside, which had a few dirty trays and dishes which stayed there during my entire meal since no one came out there to bus tables for 20-30 minutes. I'll go back and give it a second chance to see if the other entrees are hotter and fresher, and maybe the staff was just having an exceptionally busy and off night. read more

Wow! All I can say is amazing. The foods here is so delicious and so fresh! Not only that, but there are so many options. Trying to eat clean? No problem, they have you covered. My first experience here was such a pleasant one! Before even tasting anything I was in love with the customer service this place provided upon walking in. I wish I could remember everyone's name because they were a breath of fresh air. All service should be like this. With this location being fairly new, I hope they keep it up. The savory food was good, not "OMG amazing" but worth the price. However, I can attest that the Hummingbird cake was indeed "OMG amazing" and that being I am not a fan of cake. The food is good and consistent. I really like the soups, the kelp salad and the dairy free and gluten free options and variety. You can also sample different things. The price point is really good for what you get. My only issue: the service. I asked for an additional salad dressing because I ordered the wrong one at first and the person making the salad actually repeated it, laughed and then said something to the food served in the next station. Even if she was not laughing at me it was very unprofessional. I was also handed my gluten free and vegetarian sample with the same food glove that was handling meat. I'll come back but I am not impressed with the actual food service. The food runners are nice however. I do hope they invest in more training. read more

So we tried Urban Plates Saturday for lunch for the first time. I have to say if you haven't been there before you can sort of get lost in the arrangement of the place. But you'll soon discover how it operates. It's set up similar to a cafeteria style and you can go to whatever section to place an order which I liked because you get to see the preparation of your meal. The atmosphere is alright the decor trendy and the space for seating is great! I do think for the portion of salads (per husband) the price is a little high. My husband lives for a good salad. It had a great! taste! but too pricey for the quantity that is served to you. For me the chicken club was fine but I would have preferred to have a choice of bread. So overall would I go there again? Sure I would just to try something different to watch the cooks do their thing. Oh, the cooks and those who serve the drinks and receive your payment could practice with a little more friendliness and warmth towards the customers. I know working with the public is not an easy task. When you've lived as a customer service rep for as long as I have. Believe me when I say your, "business grows from exceptional customer service" it really does. So that being said if Urban Plates can kick it up a bit in that area who knows if they would have enough room to hold people. Friendliness and pleasantness still go a super long way to the human population practice is KEY. :) read more

The food was very fresh and the menu highly original. Soup Plantation nearby went out of business :( but turns out this is far beyond their salads (roasted beet salad...yum) at not too much more money. We ended by splitting the coconut cake...excellent. Tasted like my homemade cake (on a good day). we're going to use them now for a family gathering and order ribs and salads and the roasted Brussel sprouts with turkey bacon. read more

The ordering process can be annoying, place is apparently a chain, I had never heard of. I will say there is definitely a place for this. Food comes fairly quick, nothing to write home about but for the price I guess it is fine. I really had a hard time deciding what to get, and I settled on trying a turkey meatloaf, it was ok, but I don't think I expected much from it. The sides were a little better, I got the cauliflower and roasted potatoes, they were edible. I'd say if I worked at one of the many banks or businesses nearby, or just finished at the gym, this would be a possibility. Just fix the ordering, I get they're going for a faster process a la cafeteria ordering but when it gets so busy, and it just bogs down, the process has failed. read more

My rating for this place is zero star. We went to this location for father's day celebration with the family. It was later in afternoon and not busy at all. My dish was supposedly stake-plate. I thought I will be given a fresh cooked meal, the stake part. I never been in this place, and the dish was looking terrible. The stake strips were this as paper four of them and very low quality meat. It was not chew-able at all, and I had to spit out. The side dish veggies, were very oily and very salty. It seams the food apparently sitting there for a while and getting cooked and adding oil and seasoning to keep it look fresh (disgusting). So, this experience was very embarrassing and un comfortable. I have made a call next day taking to a manager, and instead listening what my concerns are, he kept saying where the meat is coming from, grass fed, and saying everything is made fresh. Yes I know they were made fresh who knows when. And I don't care if the cow was gold fed or grass fed or what ever. I DID NOT GET THAT SERVICE. For a food quality like this I say $13 is way too much. If you go to any buffet, you will find at least some good prepared food and I can choose what I want for under $10. My family and was extremely disappointed from this place and the attitude of the manager when I talked to him. This place looks good from outside, that's all the good thing I can say. read more

In Pasadena for an appointment and were looking for a delicious and healthy lunch. Wow- Urban Plates exceeded our expectations! It was amazing, Customer service outstanding from the person who greeted us, the chefs, the cashier who greeted me by name after I gave her my credit card and she saw my name. Manager was professional and attentive. My son said that those were the best ribs ( plum bbq sauce) he has had. The portobello sandwich - fantastic! Love it. This place is recently opened! Great location, nice interior design and modern furniture! The ambiance is good. The food quality is good too however the owner is too frugal! This place has two major issues! 1- The chef weighs the steak that gives you, and if more than enough, he throws some in a bowl! That was a big hit for us! 2- most of the servers who take your order are very young and inexperienced. I can tell some are in their first job, and even still a teenagers So they are still learning. The management could hire more experienced staff. That's the exact reason the kitchen is extremely busy, and so many people are running around while you can easily feel that they don't know what they are doing, and the line doesn't move. We went there on a fairly busy weekend but it was not packed. So the crowd were not unexpected. Though the place is modern and nice, utensil, and plates are all nice, and the price is reasonable, the management can hire more qualified people, and offers a great service too. read more

This is my neighborhood go-to place for healthful, tasty, and fast food. I've been here quite a few times and the quality of the food and service are consistent. If organically grown produce and grass-fed/free range animal products are important to you, this is a good place for a quick bite or a leisurely meal with a glass of wine on the roomy patio (close enough to the sidewalk for people-watching, but far enough from the street to be away from car exhaust and such). It's easy to go veggie here, or paleo, etc, so there is something for almost everyone in your group (might be doable but limited for vegans). There are lots of treats and beverages available as well. I usually have a salad, but the banh mi is really good too. You can spend a little or a lot depending how hungry you are. Today, I heard a "Cowgirl Cookie" calling my name...I'll come back and indulge that impulse another day and report on it then. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is the cafeteria nature of the place. It's fine, and all staff are helpful and attentive, but I'm reserving five stars for places with table service. Parking isn't an issue for me, but you can park in one of the lots behind the shops on the east side of Lake Ave. for ninety minutes free of charge. read more

Me and my mothers favorite place to meet for lunch. The short ribs are delicious and we also love the turkey meatloaf. When I want a treat but nothing to stuffy I choose this place. Parking can be a bit crazy during the height of lunch but if you par across the street in the Veggie Grill parking lot you should be ok. This place is amazing! I've been here several times, but am finally getting around to review it because this place truly deserves 5 stars. A couple days ago my friend and I came here with our toddlers (3.5, and 4) and ALL were very pleased. First of all, there are so many options on the menu that are healthy, fresh, and prepared in front of you. I had salmon with brusells sprouts and macaroni/cheese. My friend had the desert bbq chicken salad. Our kids had the pizzette and an urban kid plate. It is awesome that we all could eat healthy without breaking our banks and the portions are hearty! Oh, yes and dessert.. we pretty much wanted everything that was displayed, but went with the hummingbird cake and chocolate pudding. A nice little bonus is you can order beer (or kombucha which I've never seen) on tap or wine. It's just a perfect well-rounded place you can come to anytime, in any attire and feel comfortable. We also felt very cared for. A funny bald guy with an accent who introduced himself as the general manager (forgot his name :/) came to our table and asked how our meal was and how the service was. He even interacted with our kids and had them smiling and laughing. Whenever anyone asks where they should go eat.. I typically recommend Urban Plates first! read more

Just finished eating at the recently opened Urban Plates in Pasadena. Not a good experience. You stand In one if two lines to get your food - one for salads and one for everything else. An employee then directs you to a station, sandwiches, plates, pizza etc. It is mediocre at best, "hot" food was cool and flavorless. My turkey meatloaf was unseasoned and mushy. The tomato mozzarella salad was bland until I put on my own salt, olive oil and balsamic. My husband got a sandwich and had to ask three times before he got his side salad (which they had told him would be brought to him. ) When he got it, it had the wrong dressing.
