Solid place for some Sichuan food ITP! It's located near Kroger in Buckhead, so plenty of parking is available. Service is okay - not the greatest considering the restaurant isn't that big yet we still had to wave down our server several times for a refill of water. Their menu selection is pretty extensive, We wanted to try more food, but didn't want to order too much on our first visit here so we didn't try the soup dumplings this time. My boyfriend ordered their combination hot pot and the dan dan noodles while I had the deep fried fish nuggets. The hot pot can easily feed two people (or one if you are very hungry) - I didn't try much of the hot pot because I have a very low tolerance for spicy food, but my boyfriend said it was one of the better hot pots he had in ATL (and we have had a lot!) The dan dan noodles were excellent - no complaints there. The deep fried fish nuggets were stellar - very crispy and not greasy at all. The fish isn't too overwhelming either and it pairs well with a side of rice. It's not too spicy either - has the perfect amount of kick to it without being too overwhelming. Note: portion sizes are huge here, so you get the best bang for your buck and the quality of food is quite good considering how much you get. My family and I visited Urban Wu for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. My hot and sour soup was very rich and savory. The double cooked pork that I ordered was perfectly seasoned. The other entrées my family ordered were cooked perfectly. Everything was fresh and delicious plus the service was excellent. Freaking delicious. Since I have moved from IL, to many places, I have been looking for Chicken and Broccoli like they have in Rockford, IL at HAPPY WOK! I finally found it! WOOP WOOP!!! Urban Wu is my go to now! Omg so delish! And potstickers, chicken lo main, general tso's, and orange chicken are all good. The only thing my husband didn't like was that the chicken is various sizes in the orange and general tso's so the little pieces get over fried and harder. Lol I ordered it one day, and then when I finished the leftovers the next day I ordered more, because I just wasn't done yet!!! I chose not to listen to the bad reviews and take a chance and I'm glad I did. People need to stop reviewing and giving bad reviews during covid. It's just not appropriate. Wouldn't recommend. A15. Peanut Salad with Black Vinegar - was our favorite. Very different than the traditional salad. Very light & amazing taste. Cumin Lamb was very disappointing... Both of the dishes I ordered were *extremely* salty - the Braised Fish in Chili Oil, and the Sichuan Style Stir-Fried String Beans. Clearly the cook is new and heavy-handed, or was mad at somebody. The waitress would rest the mouth of her water pitcher against the top of customers' water glasses as she refilled them. This is how one could get mononucleosis, or herpes, or both. Unacceptable! This is probably because of bad management and/or little or no training. It is worth noting that she also didn't speak English, which can make providing great restaurant service difficult. The restaurant was extremely loud at lunchtime - full of lanyard-wearing tech startup bro regulars from neighboring office buildings (who clearly have questionable taste in food - but we already know this - or at least now we do.) During the lulls in the loudness, I realized that the same ambient EDM track was playing over-and-over and was stuck on *Repeat 1* - this is so annoying and I encounter this all the time in foot massage places who don't give a crap about music and just want a song playing in the background. We ordered beef lo mein , shrimp and broccoli with a spring roll. They don't deliver so I had to ordered take out. The beef lo mein was fresh and tasty. The shrimp and broccoli was fresh as well and actually better than my lo mein. I'm mad I didn't get that for myself. Lol I wasn't a fan of the spring roll. It was cold and mushy in the inside. After a day at the Shops at Buckhead nearby, I decided to check out this Chinese restaurant...primarily because of their raving Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, I was disappointed even from the moment I entered the door. From the pictures I've seen online, I expected a much nicer restaurant. Though not a dive, the place was fairly average...sort of old, sort of pseudo cool, nothing too swanky about it. In fact, their yellow booths looked downright cheap. Also, the restaurant was poorly air-conditioned (UGGGH...AGAIN!)...if at all. Where I was seated, in a booth right by the window (though shaded), it felt like it was about 80 degrees! I must now mention another major pet peeve - People looking at you while eating! There were 2-3 waitresses that basically stood, facing my table...staring at my direction (if not at me?) while I was eating. It was horribly uncomfortable. I absolute HATE it when waitresses stand around near you, let alone stare at you and/or your direction, while you're trying to eat. It's just so rude! Maybe it's not considered bad etiquette in Chinese culture (?), but again, I HATED IT. I mean, I get that they want to be available to be attentive to you...but seriously, it's NOT right that they make you feel so "watched" while trying to eat and relax. Again, I"m not saying they were looking AT me (I wouldn't know since I went out of the way not to give them eye contact while eating), but they were staring toward my direction the WHOLE TIME I was there. Unbelievable!! I will NEVER return to this restaurant for this reason alone. Also, the place just didn't look clean. Even my table wasn't thoroughly bused...in that the table (which was black, btw) was stained and motley looking. I actually took out my Wipes and cleaned the table myself!! The food was also disappointing. I ordered 2 small plates...the Fried Pan Dumplings and Dan Dan Noodles with Beef. The Fried Pan Dumplings did look impressive with its "lacing"...BUT, they put the sauce dish right on top of the Dumplings, ruining the whole "laced" presentation (WTF?)...which again, could have been impressive. After all, I noticed that only the most talented Chefs design Fried Pan Dumplings this way. Also, the Dumplings did not look or tasted fresh...but something that probably stood in the kitchen for a whole day, then just reheated. The Dan Dan Noodles was also a let-down. I've had better, richer versions from Food Trucks! The version here was too heavy on the Soy Sauce. Given what I experienced here today, I just don't get their super-good reviews. Honestly, I'm not trying to be a Bitch. I actually had a great day at the Shops at Buckhead, and was in a good mood 'til I hit their door. Disappointing all around...from their ambiance to their food. Very mediocre food (at least from what I ordered)...then cheap booths, dirty table...and worst of all, the rude, near obnoxious, overly-attentive (??) service! Honestly, I have half a mind to give it a 1, but I'll round it up to a 2-star experience. Fantastic Szechuan cuisine with two major standouts: spicy Szechuan fish nuggets and the braised fish in garlic chili oil. I get these two dishes every time I come here and it never disappoints! They have other Americanized dishes which probably aren't the best but you come here for their Szechuan food NOT the general tso's chicken! The spicy fish nuggets are one of a kind. I live in Miami and crave these suckers often. Makes me wish we had this place in Miami but at the same time, my waistline is thankful they aren't. When the snow pea leaves are in season, those are a must for a vegetable dish to help balance the meal out. The ambiance has a more modern feel than your typical Chinese restaurant. Love it! We ordered takeout, service was very friendly and everything we ordered (fried rice, lo mein, orange cicken) was absolutely delicious. The star of the show though was the Fried Potstickers. OMG they were the best I've ever had, it's a simple dish but they fry the potstickers in a way that gives the wonton a slight satisfying crunch. I was in Buckhead last weekend and didn't feel like driving to Buford Hwy to get Asian food. I came on Yelp and discovered a spot called Urban Wu. Urban Wu serves Szechuan/Hunan/Chinese style dishes. The place isn't big and was half full when I came in on a Saturday night. I liked the Mapo tofu dish we had because it wasn't too spicy but it still had that Szechuan kick to it. I saw a lot of people ordering the beef noodle soup, so I think I'll try it out the next time I visit. The food portions here are decent and they have many menu items to choose from. I didn't really care for the Fish with Tofu in Pickle Pepper sauce but the fish was very soft and the tofu was yummy. The bamboo shots+chicken dish was very tasty. Like most Szechuan restaurants, Urban Wu delivers on the strong flavors. You'll for sure want some rice to go with your meal (this is complimentary like usual). read more

My friend and I came on a Tuesday night around 7pm, and there was no wait. We opted to share C1. Hot & Numbing Combination and each got our own portion of Xiao Long Bao. The Hot & Numbing Combination was soooo good and perfect amount of spice (if you like spicy food). It comes with an assortment of fish, meats and vegetables all on top of some glass noodles. You also get a bowl of rice with it. We asked for it "Hot but without the Numbing" aka peppercorns, and they were able to customize it for us! This dish was delicious and at $17, it's enough to share between two people. As for the Xiao Long Bao, I'm still constantly searching for consistent XLB in the Atlanta area. Urban Wu's XLB was definitely better than other ones that I've had, but I feel like there wasn't enough soup in each dumpling. Also, they give you a pre-mixed sauce with the dumplings, and I would've liked to mix my own ratio of vinegar/soy sauce/ginger. It was $7.95 for 6 dumplings. Overall, pretty good restaurant. The food wasn't that great, though I'll admit that the service was friendly and attentive; we were constantly getting our drinks refilled and being checked in on. For appetizers, we ordered the fried and steamed gyoza, which tasted really plain and is comparable to something you could quickly defrost from your own freezer. This is a small Chinese restaurant located in the Kroger complex in Buckhead. Residing amongst commonplace mediocrity, you would have no idea what a wonderful experience is waiting for you inside. The interior is chic, with decor that is elegant, modern, but bright and cheerful as well. The staff are very friendly and continued to make the entire experience a positive one throughout our visit. All that is good and well of course, but the food was the star of the show. We tried a lot of things - spring rolls, wood ear mushrooms, veggie lo mein, eggplant, and mapo tofu. All of these were just delectable. The lo mein was the best I'd ever had. The eggplant had flavors of sweet and sour and was cooked to the perfect texture. I have to say, the mushroom appetizer took me by surprise as it is served cold, but they were packed with umami! The servings were pretty large, so be prepared for leftovers, especially if you're like us and have to try half a dozen things . I really can't wait to go back here again. Tucked away in a shopping Center off of piedmont road this place is an absolute gem. The decor is very chic, simple and classy. We came in on a Wednesday night expecting it to be slow but it was quite busy. We were seated right away and the service was great! The decor was simple, clean but very inviting. The menu itself was very extensive, but not overwhelming like many Asian restaurants. My wife is vegetarian, and loved how many veggie options there were. We loved all the food we had. My wife got a Kung Pao Tofu (which she loved cause they don't offer that in many places). The spice level was great not too spicy even though it had a spice level of 2 out of 2. The tofu was fried but soft on the inside! Perfectly cooked! I got hunan chicken with broccoli. Meat was nicely cooked, with a lot of flavor. Not too saucy. Both dishes had a large portion. I came here around 2pm on a Wednesday. There is a lot of parking here but I had to park a bit farther than you'd think. It was decently busy for late lunch but there was no wait for a table. My friend and I ordered the Hot and Numbing Combination and one order of the Xiao Long Bao to share. The Hot and Numbing Combination came out first and the dumplings came out a few minutes after. The soup dumplings were pretty dry. I do wish they had more soup in them but the filling was pretty tasty. If you ignore the assumption that they'll have soup in them, then they're delicious. The Hot and Numbing Combination looks pretty small when it comes out but it was enough to share with the bowls of rice that came with it. I recommend eating the noodles at the bottom of the bowl first before they swell up too much. It comes with a good amount of fish which was our favorite protein that came with the dish. I guess we got it as it came but it wasn't very spicy to either of us. The Numbing was very slight unless I bit into an actual peppercorn but this was my first time having Szechuan peppercorns so maybe that's how it works? If you have an above average spice tolerance I would ask if they can make it spicier. The service was good although it wasn't too busy towards the end of our meal. The interior is very modern and the ambiance is neat but casual. Overall I would come back and try some of their other dishes if I was in the area. read more

Who would have suspected decent Sichuan food in a strip mall in Buckhead. I only found this place on my last day and stumbled in for a light lunch. Dan dan noodle and Sichuan pickled cabbage. The dan dan noodles were nicely spiced; not the lame Americanized variety. The cabbage was a little too sweet for my taste and could improve with a kick of chili and some more Sichuan pepper corn. The waitress' service was impeccable. She made recommendations and later seemed genuinely interested in my comments on the dishes. She also shared reference comments that she heard from other patrons and asked what she should tell the chef. Very unusual. Very positive. One shortfall: No liquor license (yet). I looked over their menu and realized that the last dish I ordered in May isn't exactly the spicy fish fillet that I am used to, it's actually called a different dish on their menu. So this time around I got the spicy fish fillet, told them "Extra numbing peppers please" and lo and behold - the dish I have been looking for appeared in front of me. YES this is authentic, YES it was delicious, YES it could also be hotter, if you are used to spices, tell the waiter you want extra hot/spicy.  So I'm going to review this as someone who is from China, has been to Sichuan, and grown up on Sichuan food. The spicy boiled fish fillet is a typical Sichuan favorite. When I ordered it I asked for maximum spice - to mixed results. 1. The fish fillet was boiled and tasted extremely tender, so 10/10 on tenderness. 2. The presentation was good - cabbage, cilantro on top, tons of peppers and fillets on the bottom.  3. Flavoring - this is where the pros separate from the mediocre - boiled fillet fish is suppose to have a numbing spiciness to it that you can smell and salivate over - this dish had exactly that. The true Sichuan fillets, when you fish it out, tiny peppers are suppose to be stuck on it, this one did have that. And to top if off, when you eat it, it's suppose to be busting with flavor and spiciness, this dish had it. But it's not supposed to be just numbing spicy, salty and tasty, it's also suppose to be HOT, I mean after a few fillets your forehead should be a little sweaty - this dish was missing the HOT even after I ordered and asked for extra peppers. So 8/10. 4. Service - multiple people came and checked on us, we never had to ask for water or wait long on the check, the staff seemed friendly and not burned out. 10/10. So there you have it. This place is as near authentic as it gets to the real Sichuan, they do tone it down a lot as a regular dish so if you're into the authentic experience, ask for extra spiciness.  But overall - I'd say my experience was a positive one. Hubby took me here for dinner tonight and he gets major brownie points because I am a die hard asian food because of my roots. :) I got the Hunan Chicken with jasmine rice and I LOVED it! It is a little bit on the spicy side but nothing I can't handle because I love spicy. The dish was $12.95 but I was able to save some for leftovers. My hubby got the Fish Nuggets or T1 and that was really good too. The dishes reminded of the Chinese restaurant at Ponce City Market called Tasty China Jia, but in my opinion way better because service is definitely much better here at Urban Wu.
