After a very disappointing high tea experience elsewhere, I really wanted to redeem the idea of treating my mom to a proper afternoon tea and Vampire Penguin High Tea absolutely delivered. From the moment we arrived, you could tell this was going to be different. Everything felt thoughtful and intentional. The food was genuinely delicious not just pretty to look at. The truffle egg sandwiches and ham and cheese were standouts, and they even made a lovely veggie option for my mom without hesitation. The tea itself was exactly what you hope for in a true high tea experience high-quality loose leaf teas with a great selection. You can really taste the difference. And the scones... finally, real scones. Paired with clotted cream, they were rich, soft, and just right. We also started with warm, crispy crumpets that were such a treat and honestly set the tone for the whole experience. I will say the price is a bit steep considering the amount of food is actually given but because of ambiance I don't think we minded too much. Everyone who knows me understands I love Afternoon Tea. When I discovered the interesting location of Vampire Penguin in Palladio offered tea service I knew the family needed to immediately go. I made our reservation through their website. As a tech-savvy gal, this was not the most user friendly page, but I eventually figured it out and received my email confirmation. Terrific! As we were on our way, I wanted to confirm the time and only then did I realize the rezzie was for Sunday, not Saturday...nightmare! We decided to give it a go anyway. As I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Roseanne and explained my dilemma. Like the superwoman she was, she accommodated our party of three and we were seated right away. SUPER GOLD STAR! During tea service, Vampire Penguin is transformed into a quaint tea room with beautifully decorated tables and a sign out from notifying customers of the change in their venue. We ordered the King & Queen Tea Service and the hostess, Erica, was gracious, accommodating, and very friendly. Their selection of teas is plentiful with terrific descriptions. Erica even helped me choose between two teas and her suggestion was spot on. The teas we selected were London High Tea for the MIL, the Hubster was delighted with Key Lime Pie, and I ordered Candy Caramel (if you love the flavor of Carmel apples look no further). Service began with a toasted crumpet including butter and jam. A very yummy and different way for us to have started tea. We all agreed, however, it was a winner. Our lovely tiered service featured assorted sandwiches, scones, fresh strawberries and cream, and a beautiful dessert. This was a LOT of food, prepared deliciously and beautifully. The best part is that we had some treats to bring home to snack on later when our very happy bellies are hungry again! Thank you Roseanne and Erica for going above and beyond. Parking- Get there as early as you can, especially on weekends, to secure a good spot. The restaurant is in an outdoor shopping center, which can be busy at times. They do have overflow parking in the back, which was not a bad walk. I chose this afternoon tea restaurant specifically because it offers vegan options for an extra charge. You book your reservation online, and they will email you to confirm it. The response was fairly quick. I reserved for two Royal Tea which was $58/person with the $6 charge for one vegan option. Our reservation was at 2 PM. We arrived promptly, and our table was already set. I took my goddaughter here for her 16th birthday and wanted her to experience something new. We were seated and given the tea menu, from which we could choose two different tea selections per person. I chose the Japan Genmaicha and the Darjeeling Estate. My goddaughter chose the Pretty in Pink and the Butterfly pea flower. Honestly, I enjoyed all four teas we chose. The butterfly pea flower was really cool, especially when you squeeze the lemon because it changes color. Adding honey to any of the teas was also really good, as it adds a nice, sweet note. The first meal we had was a small pancake, which I found very tasty. They had a vegan option for this as well and offered vegan butter. That first dish was really good. The next dish was a salad, served with a vinaigrette dressing on the side. Then our mini bites tower was served. One thing I would say about the food tower is that I wish they'd separate the vegan from the non-vegan food. It was honestly hard to tell which was vegan and which wasn't. I wasn't sure if this was something I could've requested, but this was the reason I gave 4 stars. Also, because the server had to switch one of the scones at the last minute to a vegan one, they gave us a regular scone. I really loved the quiche and the chicken croissant. After the second tower, we were both so full that we couldn't get to the dessert and had to bring it home. All the mini bites were really good, and we enjoyed them all. If you have any dietary restrictions, make sure you request that it be placed on a separate plate. One other thing that brought my rating down to four stars is the service. They need at least 2 servers to handle the afternoon tea. They only had one, and she was handling about five or six tables and doing all the teas and mini bites, literally by herself. They should have two people so they can split responsibilities. Having a single server handle everything was not feasible. All in all, my goddaughter and I had an amazing time here. The shop is bright, welcoming, and has a beautifully decorated tea room that adds a touch of elegance and whimsy to the whole space. The desserts are interesting, but the taste does not quite match the service we received... This place is not disability friendly. Cashier told me pets are not allowed inside - yes sure - but I have a service animal who wears a vest that in big letters says "Service Dog." When we kindly replied that our animal was a service animal, she asked that we get our food for takeout. We ended up having to sit in the back corner of the restaurant to eat, which felt weird and awkward.... needless to say I don't return to locations that are not ADA compliant, let alone knowledgable of accessibility standards. If you're looking for a yummy and unique treat, I would personally recommend going to Pretty Sweet, or Pinkberry which are all located in the same plaza. When I was there it had shortcake and good strawberries I give four stars because of the drink if not it would have been three stars. How was the strawberries? No good. They were sour. I will start this review with my final thoughts. This conclusion encompasses our overall experience from the website to the check l will not be visiting Vampire Penguin Folsom again. This is a great concept and great attempt however, at a price tag of 166.76 for tea for 3. The Royal Tea, Princess Tea and a Children's Tea I would expect a lot more. A private area for parties, a clean bathroom, friendly staff, better tasting food, feeling welcomed. Afterall that is the experience I paid for. I happened to stop by soon after this location opened to try their boba and shaved ice (which I still need to go back for), and they were closed. Then I saw they were closed for afternoon tea, reservation only (they make the food before tea starts, so they need to have an accurate head count, and you will be charged if you are a no-show), and knew I needed to come back for that. Afternoon tea was wonderful, and the place is so pretty. The crumpet was incredible and a nice addition to the typical tea. We also got lucky in that we had the queen's tea, but someone else who had the royal tea was a no-show, so they had enough leftover ingredients to give us the salad that comes with the royal tea to try. I personally don't like vinaigrette, so while I would get the royal tea next time to get the salad, I would ask for it without the vinaigrette. They also have a wide variety of tea here, so you can have traditional black or green tea, or you can have something more fun like a cotton candy tea. My only complaint was that there was no jam or cream for the scones, just the crumpets, so I would recommend adding that (maybe even serving the two together so you know to split your cream and jam and just slightly increasing the servings). It's more than the price or having gourmet food you are paying for an experience. The people are friendly that work there. I think that given that it's a dessert spot first and tea room second they do pretty good. We were the first in line, yet it took them 15 minutes just to take our order, and then another 15-20 minutes WAITING for our mango green tea. They served other customers before finishing our order, and when we asked about our drink twice, we were completely ignored. When we asked for a refund, they told us they didn't know how to process it. On top of that, they admitted the boba was from the previous day (it was 4 PM!). One of the workers said sorry but the rest kept giving us dirty looks which we did not appreciate. They said we could just get something else but at that point we just wanted a refund. I love penguins so I've been wanting to to try this place since it opened. It's been too cold for frozen desserts until recently so we finally tried it out yesterday. Place is gorgeous inside, but not what I expected. Beautiful flower wall and elaborate afternoon tea set up. About half of the place is set up for afternoon tea. We didn't do that but it looks neat. I thought it was a frozen yogurt place, but it's more of a shaved ice, or what they call snow. Snow is a good word because that's what it looks like. They put the flavor in the ice before it's frozen then they shave it, unlike shaved ice where you put the flavor on top, like we're used to from Hawaii. I got the mini snow thaiger and my husband the Dulce de Leche. I don't know how he ate the whole large, but he managed. I did the small and it was plenty. It was beautifully presented and a very unique taste. Mine tasted just like a frozen Thai Iced Tea. Very different. The texture took some getting used to, but overall it was nice. We sat outside and the chairs looked a little dirty, but they were clean. I think the solid chairs are hard to keep clean with rain and dirt. Inside was too cold for us. Guess you have to keep the snow cool! Will probably feel amazing in the summer. My only disappointment was the severe lack of penguins! And on top of it, the scenery of this place was amazing, the music made it even more awesome. One of the best food places I have been to in a long time.
