This is the most cozy cute little brunch spot! It's the top level of this house and the vibe is a cozy, warm, and welcoming home. There are comfy chairs and a couch. They have tables by the windows which is where we sat. The staff was super helpful as we didn't know what to do. You basically go in and sit at a table set for the amount of people you have then they bring everything to the table and serve you. The lattes were so warm and filling with the perfect amount of sweetness. The latkes and lox was my favorite thing I ate the entire weekend we spent in Sacramento. They were topped with capers, golden beet, and greens! The breakfast burrito my husband got and it was massive! I've never had curry on a burrito but I took a bite and it was so creamy and delicious. I recently went here with my beloved. It was amazing on all fronts. We loved the food, great service, and enjoyed the ambiance. We wished there was a Veg Cafe in the Bay Area for we would visit here once a week if that was the case. I went with the Crepe Florentine that was very tasty and good size portion. I have been coming here for years because of the consistency of great food, the wonderful service, and the fun rotation of menu items so it's a different experience every time but always a delight. I took a friend here for her first brunch here and she loved it. One of my favorite staples are the waffles (any flavor they offer) and the fries. Both are done so perfectly. The sun-dried tomatoes added an unexpected flair and tart to an otherwise mundane mac and cheese. The more spoonfuls I had, the more the dish grew on me. Melted vegan bechamel was more fluid than I thought. Crowd favorite was undeniably the cauliflower - it's not a hard task to love buffalo anything, especially when it's as chonky as cauliflower. The patty melt was an extremely hearty and flavorful sandwich, and the cocktails are fantastic. The crust is thicker than I prefer for an apple crumble but delicious nonetheless, especially with the coconut milk based vanilla ice cream. I was initially worried that I wouldn't feel full for long after the meal, and boy, was I wrong. Veg Cafe offers seasonal and weekend brunch menus. Situated on top of Thai Basil, parking may be the biggest hurdle. Our server was knowledgeable about the food and timed his appearances well, never letting us feel rushed, bothered or ignored. A solid four star, but not more. There were some good dishes: the Mushroom Calamari was excellent. It was not greasy, it was flavorful, great breading and texture, and had a great dipping sauce. The other apps, guac and chips were ok. Chips were so thin they broke - though they were tasty, they did not work with the guac too well. Also, too few chips for the amount of guac. The bean burger was not very good. First of all, it came smothered in smashed avocado, which may have been mentioned, but I did not see that. I cannot eat avocado. The vegan cheese was on top of that, so I had to scrape off all of it, including the cheese (which I wanted). The burger itself was not flavorful, though it did have a decent texture. The fries were just ok. Not great, but at least they were reasonably hot. Fries at a vegan restaurant need to be memorable, these were not. Other diners enjoyed their dishes but were not saying they wanted to come back, nor were positive remarks made while eating. (Except for the calamari, which everyone loved). The service was a bit sluggish. We were promptly served water on this hot day, but then we waited some time to be offered drinks and had to ask to order apps. And it was not busy. Then another (somewhat lengthly wait) for the food. We were not in a hurry, but I would have been annoyed if I had immediate plans after dinner. We sat in the fern room, and while warm, it was pleasant enough temperature wise. But I could see that this would not be the best place for lunch on a 103 degree day because the AC was slightly behind, and the sun might be hitting all the windows. Luckily we were there for dinner. Honestly the food here is incredible. We've never had anything we didn't like, everything is super flavorful and thoughtfully made. The inside of the restaurant is also very cute and love the natural lighting and artwork. Unfortunately though the service is always subpar. We came the Valentines before last and paid ~$100/person just for our server to basically ignore us for another couple that he clearly knew well. We almost didn't even get our entrees and had to stop someone else and ask when we saw the desserts being brought out. Since then we've come back several times but the service is slow even when there's only a couple other tables and they generally aren't very friendly or happy. Sometimes they don't check on us and we can't get water refills. To be clear though they're never rude - so it might just be the culture of the restaurant. Very cute little spot! A little hard to find, as it's on the second floor above a Thai restaurant. There's a door leading to some stairs for access. The interior is very cozy, with lots of hanging plants, mood lighting, and paintings on the walls. The service was decent, I believe they were understaffed when my partner and I went. There were only 2 servers that we saw. Our server asked us if the other server had told us that there was a menu change, and we hadn't been helped yet at all so we were a little confused. It took a little while for them to get our food out and for us to get the bill, but it was understandable given that we only saw 2 employees. The appetizers that we had were great! Maybe we were just hungry, but they tasted amazing. The mushroom calamari was nice and crispy, and the sauce that it came with was phenomenal! The momo cauliflower had a nice kick to it, and the spiciness had a gradual rise in heat. The ranch (?) that was on the plate tasted nice with it as well. The main courses were rather basic. I ordered the fettuccine, but was disappointed to hear that they only had gnocchi that night. The gnocchi was a bit softer/mushier than I preferred, but the sauce was good. The veg fest was huge! The portion size for that dish blew us away, it's definitely enough for 2 meals. I'd recommend the veg fest if you're looking for a whole variety of things to try. Well I had HIGH expectations based on reviews and photos but meh. Maybe Sacramento doesn't have as big of a vegan culture and food scene as Portland does, but the website showed some pretty great food and we were left just thinking "meh." I'll start with the bad and finish with the good. The service meh. 2 stars. They were full but not slammed. No reason that everything should have taken so long and my request for the Impossible nuggets to be on the side got ignored. The Veg Griddle was SO small. It looks massive and it was awfully pricey for what you got. And again with flavor, pretty disappointed. It just lacked. Very bland. The Kale Cesar with Romaine, was 99% romaine, and quite honestly I should have just sent it back since I knew it would disappoint but I ate it because I'm a glutton for punishment. It was not very "Cesar" at all. The flavor was just flat. The croutons were oddly sized and just tasted like stale bread not like seasoned croutons. (which are so easy to make it's silly.) The Kale was floppy, which meant it was not fresh. Also, in viewing their menu, there was NO shaved parmesan on my salad. Sprinkled Parm but not shaved maybe. And my salad looks like romaine with bits of kale, also nothing like the online menu. The only thing notable about the Blue Butterfly tea was the pretty hue. No real flavor to be had. The Aperol Spritz was nice. No complaints on it. And the Perrier was as expected. As we are attending a big reception for our friends wedding, they've got a cocktail party at 4 and I wanted to make sure I'd had enough food to handle cocktails at 4 and probably until 10. We ordered the Granny Smith Bread Pudding and the Basket of Fries. The fries were the best thing we ate. They were perfectly seasoned with large grain sea salt, crispy and not greasy. I literally never like steak fries but these bumped the food from a 2 to a 3 for me. So delicious. If we had only had this and dessert I'd probably give it 4 stars. Even though the service wasn't great. The Granny Smith Bread Pudding was lovely as well. The pecans weren't candied as in the description but the flavors were great. Tart apple and sweet compote with the creamy gelato that felt more like rich vanilla ice cream. Very good. The other item which really shone was the Latkes and Beet Lox. Really great flavor. Subtle flavors on all counts where nothing really stood out, but I loved the crisp texture of the Latkes. They could have put more capers and onion to accentuate the acid and spice but it was good. So for what we had it was $101 to me, it wasn't worth that AT ALL. It's OKAY food. Nothing that was culinary genius or that can't be recreated easily. I say hard pass for anyone wanting to get great food and get what you pay for. Overpriced and bland for what you're paying. It's 2-2.5 stars good. And you're paying for a 4-5 star experience. Random side note: the tin cups we got were rusted and I wasn't sure if I should be drinking out of that, which is why I got Perrier. read more

So happy I got to check this place out on my quick Sacramento trip. I ordered an iced oat milk latte (unfortunately they didn't have any fun flavors) and the chicken and waffles which did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is very cute. I sat upstairs near a window the faced the street so I was able to people watch. The service was good and the pricing was pretty standard. This is a 2023 Vegan Chef Challenge review based on GrubHub delivery. I ordered the Root Ravioli, Potato Bacon soup, and the Pumpkin Creme Brulee. The vegan beet root ravioli was really nice. It's been years since I've had a sage brown butter on pasta (pre-vegan days), and this was done really well. I love beets, both cooked and raw, and I think people who don't like beets would enjoy this meal. It wasn't a strong flavor or earthy like they typically are. Just a lovely, high-quality entrée. The vegan potato bacon soup was a total hit! That bacon was out of this world! It had such a classic flavor that I remember from childhood, mom sautéing bacon and red onions just before she added them to her beans. The texture of the bacon was spot on. It's been over a decade since I had pork bacon, but it's a flavor and texture that's hard to forget. The red potatoes were perfectly cooked. It was an amazing soup just in time for the fall season. (I don't think this soup is part of the vegan challenge menu.) Omg y'all. A VEGAN CREME BRULEE!!!! With pumpkin. I usually have my partner taste everything I get, but I literally couldn't offer any of this. It was too good. So smooth. So creamy. So custardy. I'm not a big dessert person, but creme brulee was my number 1 dessert. I'm so grateful I got to enjoy a vegan version of such a divine dessert. Delectable, decadent...I felt like I was in those fancy yogurt commercials where I was transcended by what I was eating. It lightened my mood. Made me smile. We took our long time vegan friends to try out this spot, it's so very cute but sadly almost all our plates were not flavorful. We were forgotten about and other tables who were sat after us received their food first(one even ordered the same thing as me) it took maybe 30 mins or longer before we got our meals. I don't recall batting an eye at all. FOOD: I honestly didn't know vegan food could taste this good. I've been raised in the American classic. Meat, starch and something green for decoration. The best outdoor dining experience I've ever had, hands down. Veg Cafe's "Secret Garden" is truly a hidden gem; equipped with greenery, a miniature water feature, and a friendly old dog. I dined for brunch here for the first time just recently and I was blown away by the peaceful atmosphere. I was impressed before I was even seated. As for the food I will say I am relatively new to vegan dining so I landed on what seemed like was a safe option, being their quesadilla served with pico de gallo and filled to capacity as all quesadillas should be. And it was pretty good! Far from the best I've ever had but certainly sufficient - I only wish that they served it with more than the little cup of pico, as I felt it tied it all together. My lunch date ordered the Chik'n Tortilla Soup (which wasn't on the menu but was advertised on their instagram page) and I believe she was also sufficiently satisfied - though she did wish that it came hot. As for drinks I was very impressed with their menu! We landed on some hard kombucha that absolutely blew me away. So while the food may have been satisfactory the drinks were extraordinary. But like I said, the best thing about Veg Cafe by a mile is the atmosphere and aesthetic - I will definitely be back if for nothing else.
