    I truly love this place. The food is always good and its a hidden gem in the middle of a neighborhood. If you haven't tried it please do yourself a favor and try it out. Pro tip: not alot of parking so either pick up to go, have delivered, take an Uber or try to all drive in one car rather than meet there.

    I have a feeling if I came here as a regular customer and tried a variety of their specialty dishes that I'd be more enthusiastic about this somewhat isolated East Oakland place. I had heard about the place from a local vlogger on YouTube, and the cross-pollination of Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisines really appealed to me. I have to admit it took me a while to find it because it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Once I entered, they seated me in an area separate from the larger parties who appeared to be feasting on a variety of dishes. It took me some time to review their comprehensive menu, but I found one that appealed to me, the $9 Mok Gal (Steamed Chicken) which included several supplemental flavors like lemongrass, garlic, and kaffir leaves. Unfortunately the server came back five minutes later to say they couldn't make it. Bummer. I then decided to order the $14.95 Param, pieces of chicken breast over steamed mixed vegetables ladled with a thick peanut sauce and accompanied by white rice (Photo 8). It was good but not all that unique a dish. I felt a need to try something uniquely Laotian, so I ordered the $5.50 Sai Ooa, a hearty pork sausage mixed with onion, garlic, lemongrass, and Thai chilis (Photo 10). That was tasty and different. More of that please. A return visit seems to make sense. FOOD - 3 stars...the sausage was uniquely tasty, the rest didn't stand out AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...plenty of room in my corner of the restaurant SERVICE - 3.5 stars...polite though not engaging TOTAL - 3 stars...maybe focusing on the Laotian dishes would amp up my satisfaction RELATED - Exploring Oakland?     Located in East Oakland in a mostly residential neighborhood, the place was small but clean and definitely had a lot of patrons. As others have noted, parking is tough. We were there to try the Laotian special dishes and ordered mok pa (steamed fish), oar lam (beef stew). zoob nor mai (bamboo stew) and lao sausages. The fish was good with standout herbal flavors which I liked. The oar lam (beef stew) flavor was on point but lacking in meat and Thai eggplants which I love and thus wanted to order this dish. The bamboo stew was fine. First time I had it so didn't have any real comparisons. The Lao sausage was fried? It was dry and would have preferred baked. Not as good as others I have had. The dishes were small, like tapas, but was enough for two of us. Service was fine. Overall, the food was decent but I've had better Laos food elsewhere. Maybe their Thai dishes are better. Next time!

    Vientien was on SF Chronicle's list of Top 100 restaurants so I've been eyeing it for a little bit, and finally got chance to stop by after some hiking in Oakland hills. My only exposure to Laotian food was "Lao Table" in downtown SF some years ago which felt bit gentrified. We tried: 1. Beef larb salad - bit too salty 2. Mok Pa - Lao specialty, tender catfish with no fishy taste, tasted the lemon grass, liked this the best. Lao specialtkes were more like small plates. 3. Kao poun- mild coconut curry still has kick. Only a few pieces of chicken 4. Nam Khao- tasted like crunchy fried rice with sweet hint Seems like Lao food has more fermented ingredients in comparison with other SEA cuisine like Thai and Vietnamese. Like others mentioned, family run neighborhood spot in East Oakland. Street parking only. Arrived around 1pm and only a few tables but people started to roll in after. Appreciated trying a lesser known cuisine, but not sure if I'd consider this a Bay Area Top 100 restaurant.

    Vientian is the place to go if you are craving Lao or Thai food. I have been coming here since I was a kid and I still come back regularly. Over the years, it has become my go-to spot for comfort food. It is the kind of neighborhood restaurant that is all about the food, no frills. What I appreciate most about Vientian is that they do not tone down the flavors. The food tastes authentic, with bold, pungent, and powerful flavors done right. Everything is more bold compared to other restaurants I have tried, which suits my personal preference and keeps me coming back. I usually rotate between a few favorite dishes, but this time I ordered the angel wings, Lao-style papaya salad, and chow mein -- all solid choices. The restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood, so parking can be a bit challenging since it is limited to shared street parking. On the bright side, the food is very affordable, and who does not love delicious food at a great price? While the flavors can be slightly inconsistent at times, that is just my personal take and it is never enough to stop me from enjoying the food or coming back.

    Local homey spot that served more unique dishes such as Lao sausage and kao soy. We got a chefs special involving a fried fish, which was okay, but seemed like it was americanized with gravy and white mushrooms. Overall, it was a great place to satisfy a craving and the Lao sausage was yummy with strong lemongrass flavor, but I was overall not super impressed. The kao soy was okay too. I'm glad I gave them a try, and the service was pretty fast for a weekday evening. It is not on a busy street, but there were still a decent amount of diners for dinner.

    I was finally passing through the neighborhoos so we ordered ahead online for takeout, we got the gang deng pak (vegetables with red curry). It doesn't come with tofu, I do wish that this as a vegetarian dish had some proteins as a default. I tasted cabbage, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers in it. It was mildly spicy (at least for me as someone with a low spice tolerance; I only realized this because I coughed a little from eating it) but it was tasty. The online ordering site doesn't let you set a spiciness level. When I went to pick up, I saw that they require a photo ID when paying with credit card. They only had indoor seating unfortunately. It is indeed located in the midst of a residential neighborhood, parking on Friday evening so we could pick up the food wasn't too hard thankfully.

    This is a neighborhood restaurant. Looks like it was a garage converted to a small restaurant. This is a hole in the wall spot. Not in the best location in Oakland but their food is very good. Located at a corner and only has street parking. Tip: do not leave anything valuable in your car. Let's talk food! They have an extensive selections on the menu. I came for the Laos food. I looked at what others have and ask them what they ordered since this is my first time here. Jeow Bong (fermented dip) - salty but very flavorful. Must eat with sticky rice and/or veggies like cucumbers. This is my new fave dip! Kao Poon - very flavorful and delicious. There was a good amount of chicken but I wished there were more bamboo shoots. Nam Kao - this came with a plate of lettuces and fixings. I used it as a lettuce wrap. Lao sausage - mild spicy. It was good with sticky rice Angel wings - my least fave. It was too sweet and dried. It was like having candy chicken wings. Don't think I will order again. Overall, food was very good and would def come back again but skip the chicken wings.

    The owner not only treats customers like trash, she also mistreats employees and she isn't capable of handling stress. She took my order, ever since I came in she had an attitude and I get it, stressful night. When I picked up my order, I was missing a mango sticky rice for my daughter. I went back, to tell them I was missing the item and she Blamed me for her mistake. She wouldn't let me speak, she started screaming looking for other customers approval. And started screaming "oh so you want the item for free". Every time I was trying to speak she would interrupt me, and started screaming, so embarrassing for her business. She had 2 employees, Both of the employees were being mistreated and when I called her out she told me she wasn't going to be lectured about the way she treats her employees and that she was able to treat them however she felt like it. Sincerely her attitude towards the employees and paying customers was so disrespectful and disgusting, I hope they get to work at a better place.

    I've been here plenty of times, but first time reviewing. I took my boyfriend here and he loved it! He said the red bull is better than the American one. Can't go wrong with Thai iced tea. On to the food! Angel wings: fire! Get it! Super flavorful 5/5 Papaya salad (Laos): my favorite always and it was demolished. We did medium spicy which can be too much for some 5/5 Nam Kao: we did appetizer portion. Loved wrapping it with lettuce and taking a bite of the chili 4/5 Kao piak: my boyfriend loves this and it was really good with pork blood 5/5 Everything was delicious! Parking is street and overall pretty safe. Such a popular restaurant. Staff are attentive. Come here if you're craving some amazing Thai/Laos cuisine.

    A true hole in the wall spot in Oakland. There's basically nothing else nearby, but Vientian was PACKED on a weekend lunch. I've never had Laos food before, so I was super excited to try Vientian with my Thai friend! We ordered Tom Saap, Fried Pork, Gang Nor Mai, Laos style Papaya Salad, Thai Iced Tea, and sticky rice. Everything was insanely flavorful and SPICY despite getting mild so beware! This was my first time trying Laos style papaya salad and it's definitely an acquired taste since it's very fishy. The prices are so affordable and portion sizes are good. I'd definitely come back to try other dishes!!

Between the four of us, we shared a variety of dishes, including their Champa Wings, Nam Kaow, Lao Sausages, Yum Nom Tok, Champa's Fried Rice and Pad Thai. Of these dishes, my favorite was easily the Nam Kaow. This dish had so many layers of flavors and textures. I could honestly eat a whole plate of this myself and be satisfied. Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. Like the Nam Kaow, this dish also went really well with the fresh mint and lettuce that's provided on the table. There's a good reason why this unassuming Thai and Lao neighborhood restaurant has a line out the door: the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely one of my favorite meals I've had in 2026 -- I can't wait to stop by again.

I love the food over there and I had the advantage of tasting it homemade so when I go to restaurants here I have a little bit more of an educated pallet. The Thai iced coffee was delicious and strong! As it should be. It did give me the jitters though because I'm a weak sauce. The kiddos ordered à la carte, and five of us adults had the following: - BMV ultimate papaya platter with Lao sausage, angel wings and crispy pork. The veggies were al dente and delicious too. - Sakoo: Unique! I enjoyed the chewy mochi exterior and the savory ground pork filling. It needed a sauce. I just used the chili sauce that was on the party platter. - Laab Gai: This fell flat for me. I'm not a huge fan of organs though. - Nam khao fried rice: One of our favorites! The crispy pieces really made this dish. Would definitely order this again. - Mango sticky rice: Served warm. Very sweet mango! - Purple rice with egg custard: Also served warm. This was ok. - Side of rice: HUGE serving! Unfortunately it was clumpy and hard, which means old. Street parking only. Get the nam khao and mango sticky rice!

My family ordered 1 appetizer, 4 entrees, and 2 drinks, all shared, and all 4 of us agreed that EVERY single item was phenomenal. That has absolutely NEVER happened before. At most restaurants, there's always at least one thing that someone doesn't like, and often multiple things that multiple people don't like. Not the case here. The appetizer was the spicy basil wings. Very good to start. But little did I know what was coming my way. The drinks were Thai tea and lychee limeade. The Thai tea was normal. As in good, I liked it. The lychee limeade was amazing, had to order another one. I would like to try the mango next time (there will definitely be a next time). Very sour, which I love. I hate lemonade that's not sour enough. Oh and that too, I usually hate limeade, don't really care for lemonade, and don't drink soda. I usually only drink water, juice, or tea (no coffee, alcohol rarely). So that's saying something. The Laos fried spring roll entree was really good. I always liked fried rolls but something about this tasted better. They were Laotian rolls, so maybe that was part of the difference from the ones you get from Pho restaurants. The duck over rice was amazing. I'm not usually one to pick duck, I don't mind it but I usually don't order it, but this was my mom's choice and it was really good. I like the sauce too. The Panang duck curry was so good. My mom doesn't even like curry and she liked it. And the Chiang Mai soup dish, I've never had anything like it. It was still hot after, I don't know, 20 minutes maybe? At the bottom especially. We all ate this together at the end, while the other dishes were in the order I listed them for myself (mostly, kinda switched around a bit eating family style), and generally the same for everyone else. I tasted a tiny bit of the soup in the beginning and thought it was nothing special, like when my spoon was clean it was the first thing I scooped. Only the soup though, none of the stuff inside. Honestly I didn't read what was in it, some crispy noodle or something. I was not sure if I would like it but my sister said she had it in Thailand and liked it so if I didn't like it she could eat it. That ended up not being a problem. Okay so anyway, we started on the soup at the end. To start, it was pretty good. Somehow, every bite we took tasted better and better, for at least like 5-10 bites maybe. At that point, I was thinking it's the best thing I've ever tasted. (But of course that's probably not actually true, and I'm just falling for the recency bias, kind of like how my favorite song changes all the time.) Never had anything like it. I've been missing out. But wow, I have to come back. And I highly recommend this place. Life changing experience honestly. Like if you asked me right now if I wanted to get Japanese or Korean (my other favorites) food or this, I would go here. I honestly wanted more of every single dish, especially the fried spring rolls, duck over rice, duck curry, and soup. Wait a second... that's all the entrees we ordered! Also the limeade. I need to get that again. But I also want to try other stuff next time so I'm torn. I literally need all 4 of these dishes again so I don't know what to do. I hope these dishes aren't seasonal or otherwise temporary. I noticed the menu had a month and year listed (I think it said April 2026 and it's May 3 2026 today) so I believe they update it frequently. I'd recommend making a reservation if you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night. It got busy, very busy. Well our reservation was at 6 and it wasn't crowded yet, a couple tables open, but by the time our food came out the place was absolutely packed and I think people without reservations had to wait to sit. We got the following : Lao Appetizers Plate - Everything had great texture with the sausage standing out the most to me. Very soft and not too salty. Garlic Pork Spare Ribs - Great flavor, but a little on the dry side. Still tender enough to enjoy. Duck Larb Salad - Bright flavors and everything worked really well together. Recommend adding this to any meal balance out the other fried items. Kao Piak - I find that most places over cook their chickens, but the meats here were cooked perfectly. Broth was a bit salty for me, and I usually like the broth thicker, but still good overall. Mango Sticky Rice - I liked the crispy fried rice bits that added a nice crunch. Mango wasn't quite in season right now, but it was still sweet and soft enough. Overall service was great, and there is a lot of parking in the area. Def recommend checking it out.

It was cooked well and a little on the sweeter side rather than savory, but missing the smoky flavor "wok hei" that would take this to the next level that I love. - Fried Sweet Fish was alright too. Fish is fried with a very thin batter but it had black pepper which my kids doesn't want as they're sensitive to anything spicy. The fish had a light fishy taste to it (fresh water fish) which would be better if they even use a little ginger to cut the fishy taste for a better taste. - Guay Tiew is very similar to Pad See Ew with the exception that it had a fried egg on the top and had seafood (shrimp and squid). - Vientiane Crispy Roll is different from regular egg rolls. Made with rice paper roll so it was crispy but also chewy, which is different and may not be what everyone is used to. Will return to try out other dishes.
