Basil Calamari 8/10 The Nam Kao got a 10/10 because it's my favorite dish here so I might be a bit bias but the crispy rice paired with every ingredient in there works so well together you'll have to try it out for yourself! The Lao sausage is flavorful and the peppers in there really pull through but it's not my favorite so it gets a 8/10 lol. The chicken pad Thai was great and noodles were cooked well 8/10. This was soooo flavorful! It comes with onions, bamboo, mushrooms and chicken breast. I love the coconut flavor in this, it gives it a very refreshing flavor. Service was great, I called in for take out and was able to pick it up within 20 minutes or so. We also ordered order food like pad Thai, a seafood soup, and the Laos sausages. Vientian and I go all the way back when they were serving papaya salad out of the house. When they converted this house into a restaurant, I knew they would thrive. It's a really small restaurant, and they even expanded, adding a little bit of space for dining. Pre-pandemic, the restaurant was always packed. There's a little discomfort in eating in a very compact space so close to other patrons. You can hear your neighbor's conversation unintentionally. Anyway, I've always enjoyed the food here. Every time I am in Oakland, I love ordering lots of dishes from here. My favorites are: kapiet, kasoy, kapoon, nam Kao, papaya salad, larb and the list goes on. I like almost everything from here. I ordered online during the pandemic and I got a call that the estimated time would be longer than noted. I'm glad they called because a lot of restaurants won't when it's too busy. When we got there, the food was already prepared! Everything was delicious, however, the fish was cold, but maybe they expect us to warm it up? Or maybe they forgot to heat it up. Vientian Cafe helps me feel connected to my motherland with their authentic flavors of Lao and Thai food. I am quite particular when it comes to the cuisine of my roots since the only other places I know of good food are at 1. Home or 2. The temple lol. If I could have my last meal on earth, it'd probably consist of everything on my plate in this picture + some good ole' lao sausage. Every dish is incredibly full of flavor and I'd say "saap lai" (lao translation for: this is soooo yummy!) after every single bite. My real estate agent first introduced me to this place and joked that he would move in the house we were seeing just because Vientien was close! I get it- and even though I didn't buy that specific house, I got one two blocks away a few months later! Funny, but tragic because I am here all the time. Okay, the food: some of the most amazing flavors. Some of my favorite dishes include the Nam Kao, the crispy rice ball salad with fried rice, cilantro, green onions, ground sausage, mint, and you eat it in a piece of romain lettuce. Refreshing, crunchy, sweet, acidic, spicy, sour, umami goodness! Another favorite are the fish cakes. If you follow me and my reviews, YOU KNOW I LOVE MY FISHCAKES! These are the best I have ever had. Delicious pork ribs and fresh spring rolls, too. Some of their Lao specialities are amazing including the steamed catfish that is seasoned with fish sauce, spices, and dill. Loved it! Also, the staff is amazing. It is a family business and you are always greeted with a smile. Prompt, attentive, and just overally great. Parking is tricky because it's in the midst of a neighborhood. Also, not the biggest fan of their noodles or fried rices because it is protein and veggie heavy and with a sweet taste that is just not my preference. I love this hood spot. Tucked away in my old and unsuspecting neighborhood is a true gem. They have both Thai and Lao foods. If you like meat I highly recommend ordering their Lao sausage with sticky rice. I love their fried egg rolls that come with noodles, cilantro and lettuce. Also must haves: green curry, tom kha gai, & pad see ew. Honestly it's next to impossible to pick a dish that won't be incredible and delicious. And in this economy I must mention that it's super affordable. You can easily feed 4 adults for $60. read more

Visited my friend in Fruitvale this afternoon and invited him to lunch but did not want to take him to the usual haunts. He said he has never had Laotian food so I thought let's change that. Found this gem on Yelp and noted we had an hour before they closed for break. We zoom zoom over and parked right in front of the restaurant. Score! The food was phenomenal, everything was an instant hit. He loved everything and ate like it was the last darn meal or something. We ordered the sausage (he asked for another sausage from the waiter after the 1st bite), BBQ Pork Spareribs, Lad Nah with chicken, Tom Kueng Nai & Papaya Salad (thai style). I was very fond of the papaya salad and Tom Kueng Nai. I could see myself getting those 2 items for lunch & be very happy. My friend wants to come back again and again and order different items until we have gone through their menu. I laughed and said sure, we can do that. This little hole in the wall is a gem!!!! Food here taste so delicious and authentic. I can't have enough of their Lao papaya salad style and Mok Pla. These 2 menus are my favorite . I bought 6 more Mok Pla to keep in my frozen too. Nam Kao(crispy rice salad) is so tasty too. Prices here are reasonable. The only downside is location. Pumpkin curry with salmon with a a large rice Kabocha has some nice give to it not excessively over cooked where the kabocha is super soft. Curry is good / a tiny bit spicy (I have IBS so don't come for me) and the veggies were a neutral addition tbh 80/100 Angel Wings (7) Some good wings comparable to San tung I wouldn't say obviously better but it's cheaper and not as long a wait 90/100 read more

Really great Laotian food. Our uber driver even commented how good this restaurant was when he dropped us off here. Some of the dishes from the Lao specialties menu are on the smaller side, so I recommend coming with a group and getting a bunch of dishes to share. Must get: -9. Nam kao ($8.95) - crispy rice ball salad served with lettuce, mint, cilantro. Super delicious. -6. Sai ooa (bake Laotian sausage) ($3 each) - extremely flavorful, worth the hype. Recommended: -14. Papaya salad (Lao style) ($7.95 small size) - really good. Be warned that it's quite spicy. Also tried: -Zoob nor mai (fermented bamboo stew) ($5) - a hard-to-find dish that was good, but I'd try a different dish next time. -Oar lam (beef stew) ($5) - my friend said the flavor was good but the meat was too fatty. My wife is Hmong and is always craving a great Laotian spot - specifically for Laos style papaya salad. We have been trying different places in the bay and this by far is the best. The location isnt great, but the food tastes just like at my mother in laws house when she makes steamed fish and beef Larb. Vientian Café is an Oakland staple for authentic Laotian cuisine, and I've been a loyal customer for 20 years. The food is still as impeccable as ever. The angel wings are finger-licking good, perfectly complemented by their delicious sauce. My all-time favorite is the Laos papaya salad with 10 peppers--so spicy, so yummy! I also love the chicken larp, the savory and spicy Laos sausage, and the ka soy noodle soup, which is absolutely the bomb. This mom-and-pop gem offers quick service and incredible flavors. Called but no one picked up. So here: Really disappointed by the quality of the foods this time. I am a regular, live close by and this place is my food to-go when I am feeling too lazy to cook. I don't expect it to be fresh daily, but molded bell peppers and jalapeños and you're serving them to your customers? Sausage is way too roasted, to the point that this might be heated multiple times. Very different from the first I had it. I will think twice before ordering from this restaurant again. Real tasty food! I don't remember the names of the food we ordered but they were all delicious! We had some crunchy rice with meat you wrap in lettuce that taste so good! Tried their fried fish dish and wings, they were both divine! Price is reasonable but serving is small. Service was prompt, not especially friendly but efficient. After she said it a second time, I became upset and being the only two black people there myself and my daughter-in-law. I told her maybe next time I come I will have enough but I did not have enough for the maturity that they were asking so, I paid my $52.20 bill when she really stood there and counted out the money like I was trying to cheat her. The Lao sausage is remarkably good. You can order it in the restaurant and pair it with some of the stickiest rice (so much they serve it in a plastic baggie inside a leaf container). Or you can buy it frozen and throw it on the BBQ at home. My freezer feels bare without it. I like having one or two to enjoy with some stir fry veggies and tamarind sauce. It is a residential area and parking can be tough. Service is fast and sometimes hard to find someone to explain the dishes as ESL is an issue. I enjoy ordering tried and true but like to be adventurous and order one dish I've never had. This is a good place for that. The food is fresh and offers interesting flavors (can't get enough of the umami and tangy notes). read more

This is a late post. I was in Oakland for some work and met my childhood friend for a quick lunch. We ordered chicken, Larb, papaya salad, and Tom Yum Soup. All dishes definitely hit the mark for quality Laotian food. Spices and flavors were all done right, papaya salad was spicy just as we ordered it, and the Larb was not overpowering with rice powder. The Tom Yum soup came out as a generous portion for sharing. Would highly recommend if you're in Oakland with a craving for home style Laotian cooking. read more

3.5/5 I've been coming here since high school and some things aren't as good as it used to be. It doesn't look like where a restaurant should be but it's worth a try. There are specific things I always get. I always get their nam kao, angel wings, larb and kasoy! Their nam kao is always super crunchy even when I pick it up late sometimes. Their larb is spicy even though I always order mild so beware!! Their kasoy and angel wings are always good so I recommend getting these. Their fried rice and noodle dishes aren't as good as they used to be. I haven't gotten any of those since that one time I got pad Thai and the noodles were stale and bland. But I'll always support this place for the dishes that I still love. read more

This worker is so RUDE! We walk in and get ignored for 15 minutes. She then proceeds to come to our table maybe 10 minutes later, and tells me "Are you eating here? Or taking out? Because last time you had a problem" I told her "I did not have a problem with the restaurant, I had it with you because of your rude attitude, and apparently you are the one that has a problem with me, i came here before already and no one had an issue but you" she then walked away and told her someone else can take our order. I had just taken my first Covid shot at Fremont High School, and with a chance to grab food in East Oakland, had to really consider my options. Between the great Mexican spots, Cocobreeze, and Lucky Three Seven, there were a lot of solid choices. But I also saw not too far was Vientian Cafe (plus Donut Savant two blocks from there) and as I hadn't had Laotian in a while, that was my spot! Clearly a family owned and operated restaurant on the corner a residential neighborhood, you get vibes similar to Champa Garden. They are doing take out only now, but the main room is empty so you have space. They have multiple menus set up in front of the register for you to look over, including the specials menu. Based on the reviews, I knew almost immediately what I was going to get, but did want to double check the menu. Nam Khao: the third most talked about item, as Heejin describes them, its fried rice but not the kind you are thinking of. I got a big container of cooked and crispy rice with ground pork, fermented pork, coconut, cilantro, and citrus sauce. Served with a side of lettuce leaves to eat, I inhaled this, but I did add to it with... Lao Sausage (Sai Ooa): I love all sausage, but Lao is high up there (also Hmong, which is different and I haven't had in over a year). A thick pork sausage, I sliced this up, and mixed it in with my rice and lettuce wraps. Mok Pa: I got introduced to Amok 6 years ago when living in San Jose. I still order it at Cambodian restaurants, and had to get the Laotian version while I was here. They premake it and give it to you cold, but a few minutes in an oven and it was steamed perfectly. A ton of fish, great flavor (even if I'm not the biggest dill fan), I ate it over rice and it was solid. While there are a few Laotian/Thai spots in Oakland, and I am partial to Champa, I can highly recommend grabbing food from here if in the neighborhood. Worth heading a bit out of the way for for pickup, too. read more

It was actually pretty great. I ordered a side salad with chicken plus sweet basil chicken. They had three different hot sauces / chili sauces plus a variety of other sauces you could add. Really delicious all white meat. I ordered a hello curry chicken with brown rice to go. Curry had a great flavor but not many "solids" in it as it was mostly the curry broth so almost gave 4 stars ... however service, menu options,prices etc were all 5 stars. Recommended. read more
