Such a cute neighborhood! We came for brunch and were happy to see there was a wait (popularity is a good sign) and coffee while you're waiting. I don't drink coffee but I love the idea of "hey, you're waiting for a table, why doncha have a cup of coffee?" That's some good hospitality! Once seated inside the good hospitality continued with an almost endless offer of free refills our entire meal. This place is surprisingly good. I was in the area dropping something off and my wife and I happened to find this place. It looks like a small mom and pop diner. I got the country skillet with a side of french toast. It was quite good, better than I expected as well. My wife got the porkchop meal and also really enjoyed it. Woke up hungry and since it was the weekend decided to visit our local Village Cafe. We arrived right after it opened for a quick breakfast before starting a very busy day. My husband and I both chose omelettes with home fries, coffee, juice and a side of french toast. I will be honest and say the last time we were here was on a weekday so I am not sure whether the cooks are different on weekends or what but are food was not up to par. First off the potatoes were semi fried, hard and super greasy. Next were the omelettes. The chili had no flavor and again was greasy as was my wife's omelette. The eggs were tasteless and greasy not counting the excess cheese. Needless to say what we hoped would give us some protein and energize us for the long day instead upset our stomachs and our mood for the day. This small Ma and Pa restaurant is located on Viking way and has Ben there for many years. One would presume that's enough time to hone your craft or perfecting your dishes. I know this place is known for its breakfast and that it gets packed so I'm guessing the breakfast is probably good! Unfortunately I came for lunch. Upon entering it was just about empty so that should have been a red flag but against my better judgment I went in. We ordered the "Special". The Chinese chicken salad and a Philly cheese steak sandwich with onion rings. Simple enough, right? How could you possibly mess that up? Well, they did. Anyone ever heard of a Chinese chicken salad with iceberg lettuce AND tomatoes? Not even close guys! As for the Philly cheese steak sandwich, the bell peppers were almost cut fresh. Weren't they supposed to be sautéd? It just wasn't right. I really wanted to like this place cause supporting small local businesses is a good thing. 40$ for the most underwhelming and flavorless meal I've ever had. Gravy tastes like it was made with water instead of chicken broth, no seasoning and no sausage. My 13$ country fried steak and eggs was not only flavorless but also way less substantial then the 6$ SIDE of biscuits and gravy. I mean when the country fried steak is the size of a cookie, there's something wrong here. Not to mention the hair in my boyfriends eggs. The food really tastes like the cook has no tastebuds. I came here last Sunday with a couple of my girlfriends and our sons after we wrapped up football pictures @ Lakewood HS. We didn't want Denny's and knew IHOP would be ridiculously crowded for Sunday breakfast. I Yelped this spot and chose it based on the stellar reviews from other users. I pulled up and was shaken a bit by the large number of people sitting outside. By the looks of it, it seemed cramped and small. I took a chance and called to ask how long the wait was before I wasted time hunting down a parking spot. The nice woman said 10-15 minutes and even put my name on the list while I parked. **brownie points** The wait was more like 20 minutes or so, but who's splitting hairs? We had a group of 6 so I just wanted to make sure we had seating to fit all of us! They called my name, escorted us to a large booth and within 10 minutes of being seated, our food was on the table. We all settled on the 2+2+2, except for my one friend who insisted on being the only dweeb and ordered a breakfast burrito. I won't go on record as saying this is my new breakfast spot, because i have certainly had much better. But if you want pleasant service, decent food for a relatively reasonable rate - this is your place! The free coffee while you wait is a nice touch too. A great neighborhood café. We chatted with other friendly customers and enjoyed the fresh coffee they have outside. It seemed like everyone knew each other inside the café. We loved sitting at the counter. Watched all the mouth watering dishes go thru the kitchen line and the cooks just handling it all without breaking a sweat. The service staff was fast, friendly, clean. Must try the chicken fry steak, not greasy, just perfect proportion of protein & batter. The potatoes can be seasoned up a bit but love the crunch. Today I had same day surgery and could not eat the day before. After the surgery my son took me to the Village Cafe to get breakfast to go and they had Chicken Noodle soup so I got one for dinner. The breakfast skillets were great as always but the Chicken Noodle soup was Chicken Macaroni Soup and NOT noodle. There was three little pieces of chicken in it and one slice of carrot and very salty. I now know to stick to breakfast at the Village Cafe. I usually do not complain but being sick and being told the soup of the day was Chicken Noodle and Macaroni instead. I have always enjoyed breakfast here but I couldn't have been more unhappy with the bland omelette and potatoes. No flavor is the only way to describe the food. Salt and hot sauce could not help. We go there approximately two times a week on the weekdays for breakfast. The village cafe has very good food. The drink service is quick, prompt and the food comes out hot and fresh. They are quick to clean up and seat new customers. This makes for accommodating, for everyone as soon as possible. You can sit indoors or outdoors or asap. This WAS a great little cafe. I was hesitant coming because I recently had a bad experience with another cafe that makes similar hash browns. Theirs was parboiled but no attempt to brown them. Anyway I asked for them to be crispy. I got scraps greasy and burnt. When I got my toast I asked if it was wheat. She knew they were burnt but asked if we still wanted them. Got my new toast, white and soft with some tanned streaks. I asked for pork chops to be crispy on BOTH sides (always had them cooked that way here, knowing they're possibly frozen prior to cooking). What I got was a watered down plate mixed with grease from potatoes. Dried them off and will COOK THEM AT HOME. The waitress, ERIKA, well I hope she's better at the next job she seeks. We live close to Village Cafe and walk over often (over the past five years). There is new ownership but all the same people, thank goodness, because they're all great! The new owner has DEFINITELY prettied the place up without taking away its charm or raising prices! Yay! You can always count on great coffee with numerous refills, good sized portions and friendly faces. There are regulars but the beauty of Village Cafe is that they always make YOU feel like YOU'RE the regular. It's always busy but we've never waited more than 15 minutes for a table (we don't go on Saturday or Sunday mornings). So I found this place on Yelp. Wanted to take my uncle and aunt from Oklahoma out for a nice, home style breakfast. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly smile. Our waitress sat us down immediately and asked what we would like for drinks and brought us our menu. Perfect! Great service already. I ordered the Duke. It's a combination of potatoes, cheese, bell peppers, tortilla, over a home made sauce. All I can say about this meal is that it's really good. Not your typical breakfast type food. I had pico de gall on the side along with some Tapatillo. I'm a pretty big eater and at over 200 lbs. I can demolish some food. As hard as I tried to finish this meal, I could not. Maybe it was because it way my first meal of the day or maybe because the meal was really that big. Either way I could not finish it as hard as I tried. And I tried, as it tasted so good. My uncle had the breakfast enchilada and my aunt the juevos ranchero. They both said their dishes were very good. I can tell that they were being honest as they ate everything on their plates. The portions here are very big. That is why I was surprised my aunt ate the whole thing. I think she ate more than my uncle, and he's a big guy. In any event, there are specials for the day on a chalk board, and the menu is quite extensive from breakfast foods to lunch items like sandwiches and hamburgers. I like the fact that they had your traditional breakfast menu like 2 eggs with hash browns, eggs, and toast, as well as omelettes and pancakes but they also had like a fusion breakfast menu going on like the Duke that I ordered. I can see why this place has such great reviews. Our waitress was awesome till the end. She kept checking up on us. Made sure our waters and coffees were full at all times, and checked back with us to see if we needed anything else. Overall a great experience. Will be coming back to try the different breakfast items on the menu. Although this place is a little far from home, what is a little distance for good home made breakfast? I was introduced to this place by my father, who has been a regular for many years. The Village Cafe seems to be a popular breakfast spot for many of the locals and regulars, including my father. The cafe itself is small and does get quite busy. The new owner Kat who was a waitress at the cafe has made some changes to the decor, however the tasty food is still the same. The breakfast menu gives you quite a bit of choices, the blueberry pancakes are my favorite. Filled with lots of blueberries and so delicious! My father usually gets the regular short stack pancakes which I have had as well, they are also very good. The cafe opens at 6:30 and closes at 2:00, except for Sundays, it opens at 7:00 am. Perhaps I will have my father meet me for lunch one day so I can include their lunch menu in my review. The prices are very reasonable as well. Parking does get filled up fast in the lot, street parking is available. read more

We were visiting my father in law and he wanted to go to Village Cafe for breakfast. Pros:Parking was very easy. Short wait but they had coffee set out for those who were waiting. The staff was VERY friendly. Food:I got the Chili Verde Special my wife got the Machaca. We were both disappointed.The first thing i noticed was that my food was not hot, and the dish was lacking substance. It felt very runny and not very good.  I got tortillas with mine and I sort of tried to use that to safe the day. My wife didnt seem happy with her machaca so I tried some of it. The meat was not seasoned at all, dry and the dish was very bland.   I like the homey, neighborhood feel of this restaurant but the two dishes that I tried were pretty disappointing, especially after two staff members raved about them. I was heading to the Post Office today when I saw this place. I looked them up on Yelp to make sure they had mimosas before stopping in. They have pleasantly strong mimosas! Anyway, this bustling cafe was pretty loud and busy just 6 minutes after opening, but stopping by was worth it. The staff is fantastic!
