Sunday night - craving a steak and Vincent was local and well reviewed on Yelp. Firstly it's a cool setting, at night virtually all the lighting is from candles all around the dining room making for a nice cozy atmosphere. My mother and I both ordered the skirt steak, which came on a bed of pearl barley and portabello mushrooms and was delicious. I'd recommend getting a side of fries for the table to share too. They had a decent beer and wine selection and some tempting sounding desserts. Bit of a hipster crowd in on the night we visited, but that may be normal for the area. Service was solid and very friendly. Although we didn't order the cheese selection appeared to be very popular. Vincent combines old school Dutch with new-American gourmet to offer a unique dining experience. The service was great, too! This relatively low rating is due to my pretty crappy food. However, caveat emptor! Not all of the dishes on their menu are a knock out. Stay away from the cauliflower soup and the roasted vegetable with quinoa. Horribly inconsistent within the dish--the cauliflower was cold, the spices weren't evenly distributed, and the overall dish was just boring. It seemed like the only reason they even bothered with a vegetarian dish was to simply appease non-meat eaters. I think I will go back there and try other dishes, but for now I'll try other places in Andersonville. read more

Great, great restaurant and dining experience. I ate here last night with my sister and her husband and the three of us really enjoyed the food, ambience and service. The restaurant is dark with tea candles, so very cozy/dinner at a friends house feel. There is music playing, actually pretty loud, but it works out very nicely. You dont have to raise your voice, but you also dont have to hear what the table next to you is talking about. We dont generally get out to andersonville, but this place made us reconsider. The host was both charming and amusing and brought us a "gay pigeon" (a cocktail) promptly and told us a funny little back story about the drink. I had "the amsterdamer" and it was the clear winner -- very nicely crafted. We also brought a bottle of wine (they have a byob option) and enjoyed that after. The waitress was very conversational (in an appropriate way, not over the top) and sat down with us at the beginning of the meal and told us about the food with incredible passion. She led us in the direction of the cheese plate, a summer salad, the mussels and the ruby cod. We split everything. All were fabulous though I have to say the cheese plate was a true winner. Four cheeses were served with hot, fresh french bread and it was a real treat. I will definitely be back with friends, for a date night, or with family again. I went to Vincent with my fiance, parents, and grandparents to celebrate my grad-school graduation and my engagement. I've been wanting to hit up the fancy delicious restaurants in Chicago since moving here 2 years ago and have just never had the funds myself to do it. But with my parents picking up the tab, I decided to try out Vincent, and it was some of the most amazing food I've ever had. Really, everything was just mind-blowingly delicious. We shared appetizers-- cheese plate, bone marrow custard, and gnocchi were all amazing. Tasted my fiance's lamb burger, outstanding. My mom's coffee-rubbed pork loin with wine reduction sauce, insane. Beet salad, quite good. The Pinot Noir, fantastic (my parents are wine connoisseurs and they made sure to write down the label info because they loved it so much). Obviously I can't say enough good things about Vincent. My family had a great time, from my culinarily unadventurous grandparents to my nerdy foodie self. In addition to our ordered drinks, we brought in a bottle of champagne and they charged a very reasonable $5 cork fee. This was a great and memorable way to celebrate my graduation and engagement. read more

Everything about this Dutch-inspired cafe is small and thoughtful, with form following function, making for an incredibly inviting ambiance. The wine list is short but varied, I still think the beer list is far too sparse for Vincent's aspirations, but they certainly make up for this hopefully-soon-to-be-corrected-oversight with some very nice seasonal cocktails, and a pop-your-eyes-out gin list. 15 or so call or premium labels. They even have a gin-based shot on the menu named, "Dutch Courage". It's got herring in it. The menu is just one page, but has something for everyone without losing character. What would a Dutch restaurant be without mussels and frites, and Vincent has them in abundance - in fact, five separate recipes for this national dish, if they could be called that. Do not skip the chilled lovage vichysoisse - a cream-based soup of corn, heirloom tomatoes, and chili oil - which was smoother than silk. We ordered a second bowl. Nor the fried pork balls. Want a burger? They have a lamb burger. We've come twice and are now loyal fans. They seem to be adjusting to their new found fame; the second night we dined here, they were caught off guard by the crowd and had only one server. He required a little patience, but we rolled with it and just considered our long leisurely dinner part of the Euro-experience. In fact, they should've paid us to eat there, as we ourselves were adding to the Dutch air of Vincent. I'd ridden there with a bike trailer full of house plants, not the least of which was an 8 foot money tree. Both times we've sat al fresco, but I am looking forward to the winter and the chance to sit amid the rich, dark wooden interior, enjoying a top-shelf brand (with a name I couldn't hope to pronounce) gin martini while it snows and blows outside. Vincent is a welcome new-comer to Andersonville that lives up to the constantly rising benchmark being set by neighbors such as In Fine Spirits, Acre, and Big Jones. read more

After the hype, the buzz and the reviews had raised our expectations, our visit was a major disappointment. Over salted food and smug management (condescending, really) was irritating. There were some really good dishes there too and so I am not slapping this place with a zero, though I am tempted to do so. It is not wise customer service to insult your patrons. First issue - ask to be seated as far away from the toilets (they are back by the kitchen entrance) as possible. They have a plumbing issue and for the first fifteen minutes the dining area (we were right next to the wall seperating our table from the loos) back there smelled like open sewer. The smell went away after a word to the waitress (who indicated they had a problem). Their plumbing problems are more than just the sewer. Wait until you try to wash your hands and find that the water comes from the taps only if you know how to make the secret moves with the faucets. I had to go into the dining area to look for help while guarding my soap covered hands carefully from other customers (and myself). They should have a sign in there. I consider myself an adventuresome eater. I know real snert would be right up there the best of the comfort foods if that is what they served me. No, indeed, their idea of snert is to reduce split pea soup (which I make regularly from scratch) and then dissolve a salt block into it right before service. The snert was inedible salt goop (it accompanied my main course - see below). You could not even discren the flavor of the pork - lovely looking pieces of which were evident in the mash. When I mentioned it to the manger, he asked if I had ever had snert before with an edge like it is supposed to be pure salt and what was I on about? Seasoning is clearly a problem here. My brother oprdered a chicken and sausage dish that came with salt dumplings. They were not supposed to be salt dumplings, just dumplings. They too were grossly over salted and inedible. My brother-in-law had a similar issue with his food being over salted. Three out of four of us had a significant portion of their orders be inedible because of too much salt. My main dish was an enormous and inviting piece of breaded and fried haddock. The breading, however, oozed oil and tasted of off oil flavors, not neutral. The fish was flaky and succulent. By the time I scraped off the breading, there were a mere few forkfulls of fish left. My main course - the Haddock - (which the manager said was their number one seller) was one of the worst things I have been served in a restaurant in memory. The high points saved this review. The pate appetizer was really good. I really love the texture of the 'country style' pate. The one here is almost like a rillet, like the one they serve at the Purple Pig, almost spreadable, but not quite. My wife's mustard soup was really good. It was sort of a velvety bowl of melted cheese like thin paste. Great texture and great flavor. The spring salads were generous and our companions stated they were delicious. My mom had the skatewing and pronounced it delicious. It looked wouthwatering. I usually order the fresh fish but wanted more of the 'Dutch' experience so passed on skatewing. I made a mistake. My wife and sister had the chicken ('Amish,' according to the menu perhaps the connection is the Pennsylvania 'Dutch?'). The chicken was beautifully done and worked well with accompanyments (the bread pudding is like traditional dressing seen on most Thanksgiving tables and it was really good). My sister-in-law had the steak and frittes. Her husband - my brother who was saddled with salt dumplings - ended up poaching her dish. No matter, there were enough frittes to serve an army even after my brother invaded her plate. We had a few bottles of a Macon Village, a nice light white French wine that was reasonably priced. Free onstreet parking starts at 6:00 p.m. Service was reasonable until around 7:00 p.m. when every table was full. Our second bottle of wine only arrived after the third time we inquired for a status report on its whereabouts. read more

Oh. My. Goodness. After doing a culinary tour of some of the top restaurants in Chicago over the summer, Vincent comes out on top. Food. The food was expertly prepared: innovative flavors, well presented, and portions that left us pleasantly filled. The foie gras was excellent. The tomato risotto was perfectly cooked. We had two dishes of mussels: the curry broth (a must try!) and the beer broth. We also had a dish I've never seen anywhere: battered cod, scallops, and shrimp atop of bed of snert. What is snert, you ask? It's the dutch version of pea soup - more the consistency of mashed potatoes, with bacon, ham, and sausage mixed in. Sounds odd, but it's delicious. For dessert? Bread pudding with brandy-soaked plums and caramel sauce. One of the top two preparations I've had. Ever. Drinks. The gin menu (yes - menu) is out of this world, and if you catch them on a night when the owner is around he'll give you a tour of the rotating selections. Try a flavorful new addition to their menu: Dry Fly, from Washington State. The cocktails are just as tasty as the food. We had the Amsterdam (refreshing) and then a cocktail with G'vine gin and a pineapple shrub which was the table favorite. Went there for dinner on a busy Saturday night with 8:30 reservations. Had to wait about 45 minutes for our table to be ready. Staff was very pleasant and drinks were offered while waiting. The meal itself was OK. Perhaps a little too earthy tasting for me and my companion's taste. Ordered a fish meal (I don't eat beef, pork etc) only to find out once it was on the table that it contained bacon (bacon wasn't on the menu and didn't think to ask and double check if it had pork). Service was steady and friendly. I probably wouldn't make the trip up to Aville to go there again unless I happened to be in the neighborhood. But Vincent seemed to be a solid, friendly place that looks very popular with the locals. read more

I went there for a birthday dinner (mine) with my wife. It was great and we will definitely go back. This is as authentic as any Dutch food I've had in the US. We had the herring shot to start and if there had been more herring and oude genever in the glass this would be a 5 star review. We also had foie gras and it was nice not to have it overshadowed by too much preparation or too many ingredients. My wife had the pork belly which was fantastic and I had moule frites Normande also excellent. The riesling by the glass was very good and is a great choice to accompany this menu. Service was very friendly. I am already thinking about what I will try next, but I want an order of pork to myself too - so it looks like I will need to return more than once. read more

A neighborhood stand out well worth traveling for. Had a great meal on an evening when a prix fixe menu ( 5 courses) was being offered. Each dish was superbly prepared and beautifully presented. OMG! We popped into Vincent on a whim, and I am so happy we did! We started out with the watermelon salad (so refreshing!) and a selection of cheeses. The owner added one of his favorite to our cheese board... and his favorite is now my new favorite! My husband had the hanger steak, and I had the gnocchi. We were both LOVED our food. My dish had the perfect amount of bites, and enveloped my mouth with wonderful tastes and textures. To finish, we had the chocolate moose. It was the BOMB! It's been said that you can find a restaurant from any cuisine in Chicago, but who knew there would be a Dutch one! Vincent, tucked away in a small storefront location of a side street off Clark St. is a little find. They have a number of specialties including herring with genever gin, and a fab mustard soup. A nice range of entrees follow, and while we didn't have desert, they got some very interesting ones. They are byo friendly, but have a full wine a liquor license. They are also gluten intolerant friendly, adapting dishes as necessary. This is worth a trip in from the burbs just to say you've eaten in a Dutch restaurant, but I'll bet you'll come back for the food! read more

Visiting Chicago for work... Vincent was the absolute highlight of my trip! Nestled in an adorable historic neighborhood, the owner greeted me at the door and, despite being incredibly busy, managed to squeeze me in. Excellent, excellent, excellent. I can't believe we waited this long to come to this neighborhood restaurant. Hopleaf was packed last night, which helped us remember that Vincent, which had gotten good reviews was right up the street. What a relief upon walking in--sweet candlelit atmosphere, clients, but plenty of room, and a volume that we could all chat in. They were having the $30 three course special and my husband went for it so we could all share an app and a dessert, ordering the cheese plate app, the pork ribs with SE asian spices, and an almond cake with caramel sauce. My friend got the seared Amish chicken, and I went with the Mussels Provencal and frites. First of all, the portions were HUGE. I don't know how one could eat a three course meal at this place. They started with a delicious half baguette on the table with butter, which I should've resisted eating so much of to save room. I really appreciate good bread at a restaurant since I've had so much yuck bread lately and this baguette didn't disappoint--they brought out a second half without even asking too--a nice touch. Our meals were excellent (though a tiny bit salty). I had to ask the server if the frites had been fried in duck fat or something, they were so rich (in a good way!). They were not, but they were still delicious and served with an addictive aioli. The mussels were the biggest I've ever had (Long Island sound), briny, and delicious with the tomato based sauce. I could barely finish half of them the portion was so big. Likewise with the pork--my husband could only eat half. On top of it all, the service was really great without being pushy--super attentive, water constantly being refilled, answered lots of questions...some of the better service I've had at a restaurant lately. We'll definitely be coming back to Vincent--it's the kind of place you could go all out on a meal, or split the mussels at the bar between two people for a more-than-satisfying meal for two on a more budget night. read more

We very much enjoyed our meal at Vincent. I had a Young and Old cocktail, very nice. I then had the foi gras and dutch meat ball appetizers which were fantastic. I had the pork loin which was unexpectedly juicy. My friend had the mussels, and the portion was huge. I tasted one and it was great. My wife had the haddock which was also delicious. My friend and I like non-chain, good restaurants that are not mainstream... ie... plain old American food dressed up to be something that it's not. Vincent is for sure one of Chicago's top 50 restaurants. My wife is Dutch American so she was liking the vibe and some of the menu choices, but I myself was impressed with the choices and the execution of the entrees. Vincent is my comfort restaurant with continental comfort food. While it was a nice day for me and my dinner mates to eat outside the ambiance of the great indoors was calling. It is a small and intimate restaurant with all of the simplicity and thoughtfulness we seek. A great touch on Dutch modern and yet is very easy going. The service from the start was superbly friendly. We were acknowledged each step of the way and had plenty of service to feel taken care of without feeling an intrusion. When in Amsterdam do as the Dutch do--- I ordered gin and they have a small yet thoughtful selection. I magnetically ordered the Bols Genever and they asked how I liked that prepared which I ordered on the rocks. The presentation was beautiful--a large piece of lemon peel. I don't know how I missed it but Old Raj was on the menu-- a delightful gin with Saffron as it's gorgeous centerpiece. A wonderful drink. We started with the Bitterballen--fried pork meatballs. The next plate was the Amsterdam mussels and a gorgeous broth--probably the best I have ever tasted: beer, butter, roasted garlic, anise, fennel, dried basil and of course perfectly cooked frite. I then moved on to one of the Netherlands colonial experiences--Indonesian BBQ Pork Ribs with sambal and cilantro fingerling potatoes, cabbage salad, lime. The menu is small but each element stands up for a very satisfying evening. Each item is well plated, each food element is superbly well selected and there is quality and effort served on each plate. Very pleased with our visit on November 4. We needed to re-schedule our reservation due to a delayed flight and despite being full, the restaurant graciously accommodated us. For drinks we had a delicious genever based cocktail and glass of wine. The pork meatballs were spectacular. I very much enjoyed my fried haddock with caraway aioli - one of the best variants of fried fish I have eaten. The snert was tasty, if a bit dry. My wife's cobia was moist and delicious. Even though she is not a fan of fennel, the grilled fennel may have converted her. The bread pudding topped off a very successful visit. My only complaint is that we were not advised of a special of mussels and fish that a neighboring table feasted on - given how good our mains were I do not regret our choice. Leave some extra time for parking - it is very difficult. read more

What a find! I've been coming to the Andersonville area for food/drink since I moved here 6 years ago. So lat weekend was my birthday weekend and my wife sent me a list of 5-6 restaurants across the city that we had never been to before. So I did my research and I was intrigued by Vincent, especially being in Andersonville and close to where we live in Evanston. The space itself is nice and cozy. I nice space just off busy Clark Street. I was most impressed by the attention of the waitstaff. There bar menu is very gin focused. Since I'm a bourbon man I asked the waiter for a recommendation on what gin to order in my cocktail. Instead of rattling off the most expensive one on the menu (like most places would do) he brought over three bottles of gin and let me sample each. In my book this is great service. My wife and I opted for an appetizer that was on the "specials" menu for the night. It was some sort of sausage w/bacon soaked in beer cheese. Uhhh hello! This was McAwesome! Wish I could go back and have some more! For our main entrees we had the fried fish w/mushy peas and the Amsterdam mussels. They were both excellent. This spot has now found a spot on my Top 5 Chicago restaurants list and can't wait to return! read more

I've been here 3 times, and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. Being a small neighborhood restaurant in Andersonville, starting out, I figure that I am probably going to get a little attitude from a slightly overwhelmed server, tight seating, and a real mix of characters as fellow customers....and I'd be right. Last time I arrived with a group of 4, only to find that an earlier arrival had pretended to be me, and took our table! Host was very gracious in fixing this extremely awkward situation. All the above aside, the cocktails are good, if a tad pricey, and the kitchen churns out consistently tasty fare. Try the snert...mmm...mmm..good. I like the lamb burger quite a bit. I have found the desserts to consistently surpass my expectations, which for this sweet tooth is not easy to do. Bill can add up pretty quickly. The decor is perfect...I do feel transported back to Amsterdam. I look forward to my next visit! read more

After an almost canceled birthday dinner, an email from a distressed birthday girl, and a phone call from another friend as we brainstormed replacement restaurants for the birthday girl's dinner... viola! Vincent, became our saving grace. Our party arrived around 9 PM on a Saturday. The staff was very courteous. I wish I had wrote this review earlier as I do not remember the exact dish that everyone ordered. However, everyone in the group spoke highly of their meals. The restaurant was supposed to close at 10 PM. However, given the nature of our visit they did not force us to leave as we ended up leaving about midnight. Based off of our experience, my friends and I are sure to recommend Vincent to others for the food and exceptional service. read more

I love HB. I love Vincent. I love Jean Carl. I am a total fan. Like it's sister restaurant HB, Vincent totally delivers. I have been here for dinner a handful of times and once for brunch. The breakdown: Atmosphere - elegant simple and unpretentious. Service - Relaxed and friendly. Food - Consistently delicious. This is one of my favorites. I most recently went for brunch. The bummer - By 1pm they seemed to be out of a lot of things. How does that happen? Based on that, we had to basically order whatever they had left (thankfully everything is good there). The other bummer - The bloody marys here are just not all that good. Just kind of tomato juice in a glass. Boring. Now, they DO serve a version of the bloody with a cheese board which clearly makes up for the lacking beverage, but for those who got the "pickled" version of the bloody (sans cheese), their drink was totally boring. Very minimal garnishment and again, just an OK bloody. I would return for brunch again and get a mimosa instead which makes me sad since I love a good bloody with great brunch. That being said, These 2 small bummers about my brunch experience will not stop me from coming here. This place has amazing food, unpretentious service and staff. They don't take themselves too seriously and they make you feel at home. Consistently wonderful food. I love this place and will be back again and again! read more

I would have given Vincent a 5 star review if the service was better. It was inattentive at best. That being said, this place is a find. It occupies what used to be a favorite French bistro of mine, La Tache. I went for Mother's Day brunch and can't wait to go back for their dinner service. We started off with a cheese flight which was uber delicious. The scratch biscuit which came with it was a melt-in-your mouth culinary experience! I had the mushroom, roasted tomatoes, chevre omelet and I thought I died and went to heaven. I had some of my kids' banana crème pie pancakes and it made me swoon and weak on my knees. Their coffee was strong as good coffee should be. The dark, minimalist decor is so euro-modish. This place is now on my "go to" list, that is for sure! read more

Vincent is a really great place in Andersonville. Went there at 9pm on a Saturday night and it was quite crowded. But, we didn't have to wait long for a table which was nice. But boy it was LOUD in there... I believe I had a salmon special that evening so unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what I had, but it was quite good. Not exactly what I expected but I remember it was still good. My friend got the lamb burger and holy cow, that was awesome. I had a few bites of that and it was very good! Oh and they've got some pretty neat cocktails. They make their own ginger syrup called hum so that's in a few of them. The one I got was kinda like a mojito but with hum and something else in it. It tasted ok straight but the best part was drinking it through the liquorice straw that you were given. It's really a perfect combo of flavors drinking it through that! read more

My boyfriend lives down the street from here and we walked past it numerous times and I kept thinking about how warm and cozy it seemed from the outside. We finally went in for dinner one Sunday night and it was really one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long while. Not only was the food amazing, but the ambiance was cozy and the wait staff was SO knowledgeable and attentive (without being overbearing). Even the music was great! My boyfriend went back a few days later to sit at the bar, have a glass of wine and eat their mussels (which are supposed to be their specialty) and he raved about them. A great spot. I have been twice now and really like it. A charming little bistro off the main Andersonville strip. It is low-key and instead of your run-of-the-mill French bistro fare, this is a Dutch spot. The set menu deal on Tuesday's is a steal. I had the ribs and they were really wonderful. The mussels are great, too. Come on a Sunday afternoon have a salad, share some mussels and frites and a few glasses of wine and you are in heaven. A great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Vincent is a five star place for me, and I'll tell you why. Whenever I'm at Vincent, I feel like the staff 'gets' me and they make an awesome recommendation so I don't ever have to wonder if I should have gotten something else. Let me tell you about some highlights: whole lake whitefish with seasonal vegetables, bread pudding, sardines, a short rib app made with (duck?) confit, rotating cheese plates, Cotes d Rhone and homemade pates, vegetarian root vegetable dinner with curry paste, etc, etc, etc. The final frontier for me is their mussels, which I love but always get vetoed by the company I'm with. Had a 6:30pm reservation for Saturday evening. We were seated immediately, and at the time, this cozy little restaurant in Andersonville seemed pretty quiet. That changed quickly, and within half an hour, the place became packed and bustling the rest of the evening. The food and cocktails here will not disappoint. The portions are generous, and the service is great, but for whatever reason, they were super, excruciatingly slow with our table. Other parties that were seated after us finished their dinners before we even got our entrees. That was peculiar. It gets pretty loud in this cozy space, so if you're looking to have some intimate conversations, it might be a bit of a challenge. read more
