Nice place. Food was good. Service was seriously lacking. We saw 4 or 5 servers standing behind the counter talking to each other. What a gem! We finished up at another local bar and were looking for a quiet(er) place in the area to grab a couple more drinks. The bartender stayed open late for us, was extremely friendly and let us hang out much later than I'm sure he was anticipating staying for the night. I have to confess that, out of the thirty or forty times I've visited the VI, I've only gone in in the evening once - and regretted it. My first visit was in 1992 and I LOVED the place. I'm not even sure they served food, then. Didn't need it. It was a great little watering hole that did, I suppose, enough business to stay open but was hardly ever crowded. I loved it mainly because somebody there has always had a real golden palate for whatever microbrewed and import ales were showing best at the moment. The choices have always been impeccable and the atmosphere!...I've always said that a truly great bar doesn't need a crowd to envelop you in its spell. Late afternoons, with the sunlight off the bay bouncing in through that side window, gilding the front of the place with that creamsicle orange...it's the perfect place to have a slow, meditative ale and simple late lunch and just relax. Their food has become very expert, over the years; there is rarely a wrong note, albeit from selections that don't exactly push the culinary envelope. The VI will always have a special place in my heart and, if you're one of those oddballs like me who prefers no crowds and elbow room, afternoons - or late nights - there may be just what you've been looking for. read more

Recently went here for an early dinner date and came away very impressed! I thought it was really more a place to meet up and have drinks but all the food we had was really quite good, everything was very tasty. Now having said that, there are a couple of caveats. First, the small plates are quite spendy for their size (they are rather small) but if you go during happy hour they are half off. Second, the portions are a bit on the small side but as mentioned were very flavorful. We had the meze plate first, the goat cheese was very rich and creamy. (Try with the red peppers) Next, the GF had the pumpkin ravioli while I had the stuffed calamari. They were both delicious! (Be warned there is only one large ravioli, so it really best ordered during happy hour) After this we shared one dinner the Cod stuffed in parchment, which was also very good. It was simple and only lightly seasoned but was cooked very well, although again the portion was not huge, but certainly adequate. Oh and the baby head lettuce salad with pecans was excellent too! Good drink selection but wish they had an espresso machine. Oh well, we went somewhere else for an after dinner coffee. On the plus side, it is very comfortable inside and had a nice cozy feel on a cold blustery day. Plus our waiter was very attentive. My girlfriend and I went here for lunch. Our kids were young and active. The ladies (she seemed like the manager) were very short tempered and rude to us. They basically with their actions and words, made it clear they were not kid friendly (toddler friendly). We were not impressed. This is a great place to go without children. But they made it clear they weren't too keen on having toddlers around. read more

I have now been here a second time, and I really cannot hype the service enough. Both times I have been here my baby has accompanied my group, first at four months old, and then at ten months. Both times the staff was extremely gracious and helpful to our party. Yesterday my mom, niece, daughter, and I were stuck in HORRIBLE traffic for close to two hours by the waterfront, trying to get home to Sumner, when we finally decided just to park, get something to eat, and try and let the traffic die down. Walking through 93 degree heat trying to find a place, I spotted Virginia Inn and remembers the great time I had had last time. We all agreed to try it again. 'Wonderful, attentive service as always, the fish and chips were wonderful, and my niece loved her ceviche. One small disappointment? No pork belly on the menu anymore! This review is from someone who almost never eats out, only if forced to, almost never enjoys it (the food that is). I had lunch on the patio, never saw the inside of the VI and have no impressions of it's wine or beer. However, I ordered the salade nicoise and it was PERFECT. The tuna was fresh and grilled rare, delicious, and sat on a bed of lovely baby veggies, also nearly uncooked. Our waitress was somewhat attentive, spoke when spoken to, but generally a neutral. The four stars are for the salade Nicoise only, but it was incredible. After reading some of these comments I'm not certain that the same dish would be identical if ordered again. read more

This is my second review of the Virginia Inn. The food has definitely improved and is alot more consistent. There's a new late night menu and some great new items on the lunch and dinner menus. The panzanella salad is one of the brighter spots as is the risotto. read more

What a great place! There were five of us and we ordered the "prix fixe dinner. Everything they put on the table was outstanding. The salads, the main dishes like the bourbon chicken and the steak looked wonderfull. I ordered the cassoulet and it was fabulous. The wine we ordered was a Beaujolais and it was a perfect fit for our meals. Even the desserts were five star. There was carrot cake a beautiful sorbet (pie cherry?). It's a rare occasion that all five people at a table are all happy with everything they eat but it happened at the Virginia Inn. Really great food for a good price. read more

After an 8 month hiatus from the Virginia Inn, I gave them another shot. I went with my wife and my parents who were in town visiting from New York. I am happy to say that the food was much better this time around, most of the things were delicious! We went for happy hour and I was a little sad to see that, for the most part, nothing on their menu has changed. Part of the thing that I loved about the Virginia Inn was how their food menu changed with the seasons - sadly, most of the items that we tried last winter still dominate the summertime menu. I'm glad to see that the food coming out of the kitchen is good once again and I look forward to returning for dinner in the future! read more

This beautiful spot out of the fray of the Market is a total groove: relaxed, a bit French-but-not-fussy, with a great wine list and top notch bartenders. The ambiance is old school wood & tile lovely, the wait-staff friendly, and the food first rate. There are wooden booths, little cozy tables, and even an Elliot Bay view from a few. It's where I go to get my taste of non-kitchy, no-concept-but-'good', real Seattle food. All you dweebs who need large, burlesque, or concept dining, please go elsewhere. We like it groovy, a little slower and totes real here at the VI. The happy hour deals on small plates make it the number one choice for noshing with a pal at 4pm on a lazy day. Try the onion tarte! I have been here many times and have always had a good experience. Yesterday my boyfriend and I decided to stop in for a light dinner and drinks. The sidewalk seating was full so we sat at a booth near the window. We could still see all the activity out on the street and both sets of doors were open so there was a nice breeze. The inside is simple, elegant and goes with the historic setting of the building. Very pretty. We both ordered salads for dinner. You can add grilled salmon or chicken to your salad. I added salmon and it was perfect. My boyfriend did the same and his was too. The food was great. They also have a nice selection of beers and good wines by the glass that won't make you go broke. The hostess (Maya or Malaya) and our waitress, Allegra were both friendly and helpful even when we were that annoying couple that wanted to move tables in order to get a better view of the water. They took great care of us. Superb service! We asked to speak with a manager so we could let them know what a great job we felt they were doing, but the manager wasn't there. I hope their manager reads this and lets them know what a fantastic job they do! Also, I really appreciate that the restaurant can accommodate gluten-free diet. Thank you! This place was well-reviewed, so our group tried it on a recent business trip. Our server was condescending and abrupt. She bristled (actually, she snapped at us) when we asked her to recommend an entree. We were told the restaurant offers no specials, just excellent, well-prepared food. Nice thought, but it didn't pan out. The mussels were served in a lukewarm broth and were nowhere near the quality of those I'd had a few weeks earlier in San Francisco. The chocolate "decadence" dessert was runny and unflavorful. We were told several of our dessert selections were unavailable, then when we declined to try something else, our original selections mysteriously became available again. All in all, a weird and unsatisfying dining experience. We ate much better (for less money) at Lowelll's, a casual spot inside the nearby Pke Place Market. read more
