Sartre said that hell is other people. To me hell is Wal-Mart. My dad gave me a bunch of Friends DVDs that he didn't want. They still have their Wal-Mart stickers and packaging on them, so I figured I could return them and get the money back. So I arrive at Wal-Mart on a Saturday morning and the place is MOBBED with moms and their litters of kids. I saunter to the customer service/returns area and see a MASSIVE line extending halfway down the store. Great, I think. Just great. Oh, but it gets even better. I get to the back of the line, but it just so happens that the back of the line coincides with the public bathroom. Which is under massive repairs. Because of a sewage leak. And smells like... well, you know. Grrrrrr. I hate you, Wal-Mart. After about a half-hour, I make it to the front of the line. I hand over the DVDs and the receipt, and I let the salesperson know that I would like a return. Well it turns out that DVDs can't be returned, just exchanged. So I have to go find a DVD of equal or greater value and then pay the difference between the Friends DVDs and the new DVD. Damnit. I don't want more DVDs. I hate you even more, Wal-Mart. I find a copy of Juno Collectors Edition in the DVD section and say "fine, I'll get this." Since this is an exchange and not a purchase, I have to go BACK to the customer service line and stand in front of the sewage-stinking bathroom and wait in line for a half-hour yet again. At this point I was hoping the lord would just strike me down and put me out of my misery. By the time I had completed the transaction, I had wasted most of my morning and my dignity was in tatters. Came in to buy some tank A tops. I wear a large and usually they sell 5 tanks in each bag. So I go and grab one, turned out someone opened the package and took two tanks out. Super ghetto. It was the last one, and I needed my tanks cause I'm super buff and need to show off my tan. So I had to open the colored ones and stuff three tanks into the package I need. Went to self check out. I had a great experience at this Walmart because I met an employee named Luz, who went above and beyond to help me. I wanted a particular type of disinfectant wipe and she was working in that section. We looked for the wipe and it wasn't there. Then she went on her phone to see if it could be called something else. Her goal was customer satisfaction! If you are a student at UCSD, there's a pretty good chance that quite a few things in your backpack, room, bathroom, kitchen, and elsewhere in your humble abode were purchased from this Walmart. Coming here was probably one of the first weekend/after-class adventures you embarked on with your friends after you moved to San Diego. How could it not be when it's so conveniently located right off the 805 freeway and so close to Convoy St? If you were a student at UCSD anytime before the summer of 2012, there's a pretty good chance that quite a few things in your backpack, room, bathroom, kitchen, and elsewhere in your humble abode were also purchased from this Walmart... but you probably didn't have to rush in here sometime between the hours of 6:00 AM to 11:00PM to do your shopping. You had the luxury of leisurely strolling around at 2:00 AM if you so pleased. When Walmart announced that this location would no longer be 24 hours, it signified the end of an era for many UCSD students. Apparently, they wanted the luxury of restocking shelves without any interference from annoying college students--funny because the shelves are always empty at all times of the day anyway! Yes, this is your typical Walmart, meaning it comes equipped with its own special herd of apathetic employees, as well as cluttered aisles that are blocked by pallets of unstocked merchandise still in all their shrink-wrap glory. But for whatever reason, this Walmart seemed to be *THE* late-night spot to frequent for bored college insomniacs (coming in at a close second is the Ralphs on Villa La Jolla Drive). Reasons UCSD students might come to Walmart at night: - Bored and can't/don't want to sleep - Because your roommate asked if you wanted to go, and you always accept any excuse to put off studying just a little bit longer - You had a shitty day and need to laugh at some people to make yourself feel better - You just finished eating dinner (probably somewhere on Convoy St) and realized that you need to pick up some toilet paper - Night = less crowded = less weirdos - No solicitors to block your attempts to walk in/out of the store - If you were part of Greek life, you probably came here during late-night hours to shop for supplies to make gifts for your big/little. You thought you could be sly and secretive by showing up after midnight, but everyone else had the same idea as you. Yeah, I saw you there too... guarding the crafts aisle and eyeing the last bottle of gold paint that I'm going to snatch out of your hands... Thank you, Walmart, for your many years as a 24-hour shopping center. If it weren't for you, I don't know where else my roommates and I could have gotten some Drano that one time when we clogged our sink at 1:00 AM. Leaving Walmart with a bag of Dog food in one hand and a bag with coffee and soap in the other, few people walked out the door a head of me, everything is normal except when a 60-70 year old lady (door lady) got in my face wanting to see whats in the bag and my receipt, I believe my only guilt that I did not look Caucasian, she said it was a random inspection, store policy. The worse customer service ever!!!! My pregnant wife stood in the return line for 10-15 with just one person assisting an argumentative customer. Instead of calling for backup assistance, she let us stand there and the line just built up behind us. Also, I was there yesterday to pick up some ink, paid at the electronic register and when I walked out it rang...OMG. I showed the cashier my receipt and he told me I can just go. It is a Walmart, so with that being said. I think it is the nicest of the Walmarts in the areas of San Diego that I shop. I went on the Sat. before Christmas...not the smartest tool in the shed. The prices are pretty damn cheap and it seems that they are carrying more items that are NOT made in China. I actually found a bunch of stuff...Made in the USA. They had the Marines Toys for Tots Donation s out front...a great thing! So if you do go remember to drop a toy....(or 5) off in the boxes. So, any time I go to this Walmart it's usually very early. The store is empty but there are at least 300 employees standing around bullshitting and pretending to stock shelves with candy and clothing while blocking entire aisles. I don't think I've EVER seen an employee "working" the jewelry counter other than plainclothes creeper detectives that always make me feel like I don't even want to browse that long much less buy anything. Well, it's Valentines Day. I'd say that's the biggest time to rack up some sales in this department right? I asked 3 different employees to find someone that had a key that could help me. One if which said "sorry lady, I'm clocking out" I stood there 30 minutes listening to 3 ladies hanging up bras commiserating about their man problems that completely ignored me. I walked straight up to the "customer service manager" and asked her why out of 300 employees on a big holiday week nobody could be bothered with selling me anything in the jewelry department?? She took one look at me and got on her radio "jewelry dept? Jewelry dept? Jewelry dept..." Echoes, crickets, dust bunnies.... I walked out. This is why brick and mortar stores are failing. Review solely for pickup (with online ordering). Checked out with pickup for everything to be ready same day, but notice never came. Next day I called and took three calls but finally got someone on the phone - "you order is not ready yet." I asked for an estimate and pointed out that it was supposed to be ready the day prior but nobody knew why or how to provide an estimate, or whether I could pick up some of the items I needed. Disappointed as this service would have provided a great option to get items needed fast but no way I would do this again. read more

I always go later at night with my boyfriend (around 10 or 11 PM) since this place is 24 hours. I love that about this place! I love this place. Ok, so everyone already knows that the people who work here are incompetent and the "patrons" are a mixed bag of something but I just love this place. Walmart in general and this location specifically for San Diego. A couple of my favorite qualities -Walmart is cheap. Even name brands but especially store brand knockoff (equate:). I tend to go name brand for stuff like: toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors (for shaving not cutting) while I go equate for: floss (my sis calls it walmart floss), soap, shampoo. The soap and shampoo are knockoff dove but smell/ clean the same. Also a great place to buy trashbags, detergent, cleaning products, paper towels, stuff like that. And they sell in both small and large quantity. -Nobody hassles you. If you want to look at a tv or something you dont get hassled by a salesman. They actually try not to work so its great. For some people this may be a con -The price check system is awesome. The associates are too lazy to price check anything so if they cant scan it, they just ask you what it costs? The answer is .97 cents unless its fancy looking, then its 9.97. Everything here ends in .97 instead of .99 to remind you that every penny counts... and that you are poor. -They will return anything for any reason. It doesn't even need to be from walmart. -You can sign up for discount cable/internet at the front. They have a rep from uverse, cox, time warner in the front depending on the service area. Always the cheapest place to sign up because they just assume you are poor. -People watching. Ok, this is why I like this specific store. Once I saw a 20 something dude with a mini skirt and a tube top waiting in line with a pack of beer and a blank look on his face. The combination of his red lipstick and blond wig with his 5 o'clock shadow, mustache, and hairy chest made for a spectacle. Everyone was looking but he did not seem to care. He was not even moving in the line, just standing there. Anyway, so many instances of stuff like this, it is always a serendipitous event to discover at walmart. Well now I kinda expect it so not so much. This particular store tends to have interesting people but not scary people. As you go to the stores more north, they are less interesting, as you go south, they are scarier. This is a pleasant middle ground. -proximity. Theres a food for less right across the street. If you need to shop at walmart you will probably appreciate this fact. Cons: -Associates are dumb as dogshit and they refuse to work. Dont even ask them a question because it is not worth your time to start a conversation with them. Just pretend to be def/mute and you will be fine -The salvation army and the united [inset any minority] college fund will be in front trying to get donations. They also like to petition for ballot signatures there. Kind of annoying. But remember to keep that def/mute awkward smile on your face as you head to your car and you will be fine. -You will probably buy a bunch of stuff you don't need. That is just a side effect of the cheap prices. Overall, I would say that walmart is worthy of 5 stars. Me and my friend used to come here for fun. We would go like it was the movies and she even got offended once when I went without asking if she wanted to join. Its that much fun, really. Disabled, but don't look it? Don't come here: At the late hour of 9:30pm last Thursday my house was still intolerably hot. I went to Wal-Mart to buy some fans. Fortunately, I encountered the only friendly employee there. He helped me load the three big fans I had selected into my shopping cart. I got in line at the register and waited for several minutes without moving forward. Finally, the cashier indicated that she was closed. Really!? Ten minutes later?! I just wanted to get out of there. Snarl... Irritation... But suddenly before me was the express-self-checkout. I got in line. I thought I'd found deliverance, but instead I found myself confronted with blatant discrimination. I have severe back problems and sometimes I need help. When my turn came, I realized that the self-checkouts do not have a mechanism to scan items without removing them out of the cart. The "self-checkout-helper-person-booth" was close by, so, upon establishing that the lady posted there did, in fact, have a handheld barcode scanner, I asked her for help. I said, "Excuse me ma'am, could you please help scan these fans for me? I am disabled". She hesitated, in no way masking her disbelief. Perhaps I did not conform to her mental image of a disabled person because I am 27 years young and fairly "normal"-looking. Did she expect me to prove it? Regardless of my appearance, deciding whether or not I was disabled "enough" to receive help was not her role! Still under the gaze of her unwarranted suspicion, I felt pressured to explain myself: "I have back problems," I said, "I shouldn't lift these." Irritated, the woman took up her scanner. She grumbled something about how I should have gone to a regular checkout for help. I was uncomfortable with the ridicule and did not know how to respond to it, so I pretended not to hear. But she didn't stop. She grumbled on with exaggerated frustration, about the great difficulty put to her, of locating the barcodes. She was now calling the attention of other shoppers to me: She placed my cart directly into the path of customers who had made their purchases and were trying to leave. I get your point lady; so please stop humiliating me. I needed to distract myself from the tears that were threatening to come. I pointed out a barcode, to be helpful. "That's the wrong one," she barked, clarifying for me that the problem wasn't the barcodes, but me. After that, I was silent. I didn't look at her, I didn't listen to her and I didn't thank her. I realized that I was shaking. The implications of the treatment I received are as follows: Disabled shoppers are unwelcome in Wal-Mart's express-self-checkout. It is furthermore the disabled shopper's own responsibility to know which checkout lanes they may use and which employees they may ask for help, as disabled persons are not welcome to use all of the areas and services open to others. Disabled persons asking for help while being in the wrong checkout line can expect to be judged, humiliated and otherwise subjected to mistreatment. read more

Yesterday i went to Walmart on Shawline drive i dont usually shop here & will not in the future. I had a trolley load of stuff went to go check out & word of a lie there must have been 20 plus people waiting for the One register that was open,So i thought go to self check out instead will be quicker. I start checking out & am approached by a women by the name Encuenta whom informed me i could not pay for the case of beer i had there? I told her the only reason i was doing self check out was because they only had 1 register open with over 20 people in line so could she please go ask for more checkers to work, she ignored me. I get to the end of checking my items & i'm missing a bar code so have to ask for her help in getting it, she took the item got the price & entered it. I now need to wait in line to pay for the 1 case of beer 20 mins. When i reach the register i pay & ask to see the manager Elizabeth i explained how the customer service was none existent & that it would help if they had a sign saying you cannot use self check out if you have alcohol also i had asked the lady if she could ask for more checkers to work please. Her response was No better saying the other lady is not allowed to leave the self check outs. So i said in which case she should have a radio but as the manager you should monitor your check outs to give the best customer service, i just got a shrug of the shoulders. I told her i would not be shopping in the store again & would post on social media my awful experience at her store. I leave & then discover the first lady didn't give me the item that had no bar code on it even though i paid for it, so returned to get it. Needless to say No apologies where given. I will not & advise others not to spend your money in such s place whom does not care about their customers. read more

This location used to have the online order pick-up kiosk at the back of the store. Now that they have "improved" it by moving such service to a semi self help kiosk at the front of the store. But this actually creates an even longer wait time. After checking in at the touch screen monitor it will take at least 15 minutes before someone can come by and get you the item. This is contrary to what online order pick-up works. There's a lot more room to improve on this system. And staff could be a little more friendly in the way how they interact with customers. read more

I used to love going to this location since it seemed it was somewhat hidden away , but looks like its gotten quite busier with time. To make things worse they have added tons of self check out machines , no employees on the floor except the ones stocking the shelves. They only have two live cashiers open at a time usually and they dont care how long the line gets. Then you go to the self check out and they are backed up to hell. Horrible , no wonder people love AMAZON. I only buy things here i cant find there. read more

Very bad customer service and horrible manager!!! I've ordered a 1000pc Josephine Wall puzzle ( Order #3491980-864457) that was supposed to be in- stock and ready to be picked up the next day at a San Diego store on Shawline St. and then only found out that my pickup order was delayed after placing the order. Patiently waited and finally received an email notification more than a week later that my order was ready to be picked up and it needs to be picked up by Tue. April 2. I went to the store on April 2 to pick it up and asked a lady staff standing near the Customer Service about online pickup. She told me to go to the back of the store. I went there and looked for it but couldn't find it then was advised that the pickup counter was right by the entrance, which was also near Customer Service . By the time I got there, it was passed 8pm and the pickup counter was closed. I called the next day and asked if they would hold it for me until the weekend to pick it up. The gentleman at the pickup counter said he still had it and would certainly hold it for me. 3 days later, I came on Sat. to pick it up and was told that my order was canceled 2 days ago since it was never picked up!!! I've talked to Justin, the manager there about what happened and was told to wait while he went and looked for it. He left and then came back with a different puzzle, just by the same artist, and handed it to me. I told him that that wasn't the puzzle I ordered. It appeared that he might have picked it out from the shelf. He even tried to fool me by saying that that was what came in the box!!! He then told me to wait while he would go back and look for it again. I patiently waited for several more minutes but he never showed up. I then had to ask a gentleman at the pickup counter to call and check with the manager for me and was told that I would have to go online and re-order it myself. I asked if they could re-order it and have it shipped to my home after all the trouble I've gone thru especially that the shipping option is not available for the item. He said no and that I would need to do it myself!!! Never go back there again!!! Walmart, you need to train your staff especially your managers when and how to apologize to your customers at the very least when something goes wrong!!! read more

For comparing to other wlamarts this one is a good one. You still get the weird things associated with Walmart but it's not too bad. I love the fabric section here, it's something target doesn't have to offer. They carry almost every brand of everything. The location is in a nice shopping center and I really appreciate the solar panels in the parking lot. Employees are friendly for the most part if you approach them kindly. I grabbed them and was going to head to self checkout, but was told I had to wait in line separately at the cosmetics counter to buy the nail clippers and I wasn't allowed to take them up to front with my other things. This is unacceptable. There was only one cashier and I had to wait why the person in front of me bought 20-30 things, just to buy a $2 pair of nail clippers. read more

I just purchased a rice cooker/food steamer from this Walmart, and upon opening it, discovered that it was clearly used- the bowl was dirty with food residue and scratched up, and the steamer insert, spatula, and measuring cup were missing. My new favorite store. The quality isn't up there with Costco on some things but for groceries and extras it's great!

Many countless times I have needed items at random hours of the day/night and Wal Mart always seems to pull through countless times. Everything from school supplies to electronics this all mighty store has in stock ready to for your purchase. That includes gold fish!! Buy my favorite brand Wardley. I have yet to bring my car in for an oil change. Perhaps one of these days I will get around to it and see how the automotive service section is. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ONLINE AND SHIP TO THIS SITE! I bought a 3 piece furniture bundle using their "Site to Store" free shipping. Worst idea I've made about online purchases. 2 of the 3 pieces were delivered in a timely fashion. I went to go pick it up from the store--took FOREVER to get a service rep to even COME to the stie-to-store dept. Ok..whatever...maybe EVERYONE was on their break or something. I'll allow 1 mishap. I go home and the furniture is not what I thoguht it would be (things look different from when they're online--fact of life. No biggie). I return the 2 that came and asked if they would just return the 3rd even though I don't have it because I dont want that one either. Nope. No can do. They can only do it when it gets into the store. Too bad that piece was delayed for A MONTH. Needless to say I still had to pay for it (used a credit card and billing was due) even though I didn't want it. Now that's it has arrived to the store, I've tried calling their 1800 customer service #...to no avail--it's just a recorded message. I've called THIS walmart to see if they can just return it without me picking it up and returning it but NO ONE PICKS UP THE PHONE. The operator that transfers your calls to different departments in the store was even at a loss for words. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED. Now I have to go to the store. Tell them I'm picking up the package JUST TO RETURN IT. I already paid online, and just needed to pick up my order but they were taking long time and I didnt want my order to be cancelled like before. This store is never stocked. The items on the shelves are the ones that no one buys or shop lifts, which is a big problem here.

Some employees need retraining on costumer service. No sign posted that a "new policy" is in place about having an I.D when you purchase a money order? No explanation why ID was needed, no sign posted about that so called new policy. I was going to call the manager but decided this is much easier for everyone to read. Walmart is becoming a bigger joke with all their ghost policies such as checking your receipt when you walk out the store.
