We've been going to Wasabi Japanese Restaurant since they first opened, and at this point it's easily our favorite spot. When I say we come here all the time, I mean it's pretty much a weekly thing. The owners have truly become like family to us, which makes the whole experience feel even more special every time we walk in. Some nights we'll sit at the sushi bar and just watch everything being made, which is always fun and kind of relaxing in its own way. Other times we're in the mood for hibachi, and the shows never disappoint. It's one of those places where you can go depending on your mood and still have a great experience either way. My go-to is always the mixed sashimi salad. I get it every time and never regret it and you really can't go wrong with the Godzilla roll or the Spider roll either. Both are solid every single time. If you're doing hibachi, the garlic butter fried rice is a must. It's so good, and the bacon is perfectly crispy, which for me makes all the difference. Helpful tip: If you can, sit at the sushi bar at least once. It's a great way to watch everything being made and adds to the whole experience. Sadly, I'd never go back. My review is extremely late but we came here based on reviews for my daughter's birthday a few years back. We were new to Elk Grove and wanted to try this spot as it seemed fun and engaging. We made a reservation and they sat us with another group. No big deal, that's how hibachi's go. All the other tables around us were having so much fun so we were excited to have some fun and get my kids involved and loving hibachi. Unfortunately, our cook was training. The vibe was awkward with all of us at the table and the cook didn't speak ONE word to us, let alone a smile. My kids hated it and everything took so long. Probably the worst birthday meal we have ever experienced. I thought our hibachi experience was ruined forever but luckily my kids had a blast in Cabo getting some real hibachi. The hubster and I ventured down to EG to meet friends for dinner. It wasn't until we arrived that I realized I had eaten here before, but it had been about 11 years before. Wasabi is a great little gem! Plenty of seating inside for small or larger parties and this is a terrific spot for celebratory meals. Their food is prepared fresh and tonight ours was done so by Michael in front of us on the hibachi. So fun! The flair, the scents, the fun, and the food were all wonderful. Took my dad here for his birthday today. It was packed. Every single grill had seated guests. The business was bustling. For appetizers we got the deep fried shrimp, calamari, and veggie combo. It was a 5/10. Definitely had no flavor and calamari was chewy. Wouldn't order again. The Wakame salad was on the sweeter side 7/10. I ordered the scallops, steak, and chicken. My husband, my mom, and my dad both got steak, shrimp, scallops. We all got garlic bacon fried rice besides my mom who got steamed rice. Bacon makes everything better! Our hibachi chef was Tuan. The show is the same after all these years and the only thing that really makes a difference is the enthusiasm each chef provided and ours was just not there. Wasabi is a fun place to have a meal. I recommend making reservations, especially on Friday's and Saturday's as they can get busy. We did teppanyaki where they cook in front of you. It's a cool experience to watch them cook what you order right in front of you. Depending on the chef, they can be very entertaining and interactive. You can mix and match what kind of meat you want as well as sides. It comes with both miso soup and a salad as a starter. The miso soup was good and also had some mushrooms in it which isn't very common, but a nice touch. The salad was good because they used some sort of miso dressing. I ordered the gyoza as an appetizer, which was crispy and delicious. I ordered the combination plate which came with steak, chicken, your choice of rice (I chose garlic fried rice), and stir fry veggies. It has great flavor and had a lot of rice, but i would have like a little more meat. UPDATE! Now that I've talked to a few friends and family members about my experience here I feel I need to update this review. I GOT FOOD POISONING FROM THE SCALLOPS! I was literally the only one on a group of 22 people to order the scallops and the only to experience severe food poisoning symptoms. I experienced them within 30/49 minutes of eating the scallops to the point I had to pull over ON THE FREEWAY and my mother had to drive the rest of the way. The symptoms lasted a good 3 days. LEARNING ADVICE Order food other than their teppanyaki part of the menu. If you're here just to watch a guy twirl his cooking tools and cook in front of you only then by all means keep it this way. But if you are here to have a FOODIE Experience.....you should order other than their Teppanyaki part of the menu. Im being serious. SERVICE I'd say the entertainment was fun to watch. The Teppanyaki chef was funny, entertaining and great at cooking. The wait help was patient in bringing in the items to us like the drinks and the bill. FOOD Maybe it was the way we bought our food.
