Before the pandemic, my parents visited Waterman Grille during family weekend and would not stop raving about it. I finally got to go this past May (at their expense of course, what else are parents for?) and it was well worth the wait. We tried two appetizers - the calamari and grilled octopus. Both had a nice flavor but I'll warn you now... that sauce is pretty damn spicy! I ordered the roasted duck breast and the duck was actually the least impressive thing on my plate. It was served with creamed leeks, roasted carrots, roasted turnips, and a mustard vinaigrette. I swear I've been dreaming about those creamed leeks for over a month now. I also tried The Knockout - a refreshing, fruity cocktail. We ended the meal with the creamy creme brulee; a perfect finish! Waterman Grille is a great spot for a fancy dinner on a special occasion. Would I come here on just any old Saturday night? Absolutely not. I don't have that kind of money (yet). But if you're searching for a nice restaurant to celebrate, it's a great option. Low key New England coastal elegance. It's unassuming but serves creative twists on local staples. The staff is very welcoming although the dining room can be at times loud. I went for dinner recently and I also got married there. The wedding coordinator was the rock I didn't know I needed, everything looked great and went off with a hitch. I made online reservations without seeing the place, I was pleasantly surprised how nice it is inside. I had said it was our anniversary and they got us a card signed by everyone, such a nice touch. We had an absolutely beautiful view of the river, a nice breeze and it was pretty quiet, people we're talking but weren't shouting. We ordered the cheese plate and it looked, sparse, but it was a perfect ratio, there was just enough toast points for everything, and the honeycomb was delicious!!! The rib eye was cooked perfectly and well seasoned, the hasselback potato was not that good, the spinach was very tasty. My hubby got the jerk braised oxtail which was fall off the bone juicyness, the grits were nice and creamy. Allie our waitress was friendly, attentive and not hovering. Came for a special celebration with my family. Plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is very nice indoors and outdoors. We reserved a table on the patio outdoors on the river. They had plastic drapes to keep the strong wind from bothering us. The river itself is not very pretty and there isn't much across the river but graffiti on old buildings. So don't expect much looking out across the river. But still very nice restaurant itself very romantic. Staff members were very kind. Maybe one or two of them were wearing masks. I honestly came in with very low expectations for this place because of my experience with restaurants in the Providence area. But I honestly was surprised, it was pretty good! Food was reasonably priced and was very flavorful! We started off with a bottle of white wine the fruli guave pinot grigio which was good. My brother got the knockout cocktail...which as it says, is very strong. We started off with an order of fried calamari and mussels. The mussels had great flavor and the broth was delicious. They also give you bread for the table which went great for extra bread to dip into the broth. The calamari was interesting. The calamari itself was fresh but the batter on it was very light. I ordered the Shrimp Amatrigiana which came with linguine in a red sauce. The pasta itself was your typical pasta but the shrimp were very big and cooked perfectly. My brother got the scallops which he thoroughly enjoyed and also cooked perfectly. My husband got the duck breast which was cooked medium-rare. Tasted good on its own but better with the sauce that they made with it. We also got the sirloin steak for my dad, which was a bit disappointing because I thought it was just average being the most expensive entree we ordered. The seasoning I thought was a little off and the char on it was maybe a bit too much. Tasted a little burnt on just the outside. But it was cooked to a perfect medium-rare as we asked for. We substituted the fingerlings for some regular fries which were good. My mom got the swordfish from the chef special which we thought was ok. The fish itself is dry so you really need the curry sauce with it. Not spicy at all. Overall, the food was good. We did see that they offer brunch here so would definitely be interested in coming for brunch one of these days. read more

Eh, well this was a last minute reservation for my mom for Mother's Day. My sister chose this place, so we figured to give it a go. Originally when I looked it up online, it looked like it was going to be nice scenery and good food, didn't get that but anyways. Pulling into the parking lot, nice and spacious there's tons of parking. And it's by the water so amazing views for pictures or to relax before you go in. That's a plus, love private parking lots. They also have a pretty cute chill area right outside the restaurant to also wait, with chairs and water view, very cute and great photo opp. Walking inside the place is very small, but was greeted and told my table wasn't ready, we had a 8:15pm reservation. I walked in at 8:20, table wasn't ready no big deal. But my sister said she got a text at 8:15pm saying come inside your table is ready so she was rushing in, we came separate. So that was confusing, and no the table wasn't ready until 8:25pm, even though the text said table was ready at 8:15pm, okay whatever no biggie. Moving on, we sat "outside" which was super cute. The table was cute and nice presentation. Very small yet again, but shockingly the ambience wasn't loud, it was just right. I did enjoy that. The waitress was a sweetie and gave great service. My mom ordered an appetizer which was the shrimp and she loved it! But that was all that was loved for the night. My mom and I ordered the crab pasta and my sister ordered the steak. Presentation wise it looked okay, but as soon as I took my first bite I was like 1. This taste low budget, and 2 where is the crab meat? Needless to say I looked at my mom and she had the same face. OH by the way the waitress mentioned the special for the night which my mom was ecstatic to get, only for the waitress to come back and say they had no more. So my mom settled for this crab pasta that was gross. My sisters steak was mediocre and her Mac and cheese looked under cooked. Needless to say, for such an "upscale place" this tasted very low budget and for the prices they charge the food should respectfully reflect that, which in fact it did not. I thought we were just being picky but before we even said anything to the waitress the table 2 over from us complained about something they had too saying they didn't like it, so I knew it wasn't just us. Our waitress did get the manager for us, as we explained how we felt and she was very interested in trying to make it right but told us " the kitchen is closed, but we can make you whatever you'd like", which was also very confusing by this time is was like 10:30pm, we were done waiting for food. And were not interested in hanging out any longer. I would probably not give this place a try again. It just was an absolute miss, not to mention everything took forever to come out. Probably waited half hour for the app, and then even longer for the terrible food. I give 2 stars instead of just 1 because our waitress tried to make it right and the manager did too, but otherwise I'll pass. read more

I have been here several times over the years. I haven't been as much recently, since I've gone plant based. The old menu didn't have anything a vegan could enjoy. So when the Providence Restaurant Week menus came out, I was pleasantly surprised to see a vegan option. If you haven't been here before, you will be the thrilled to know they have plenty of free parking. They are owned by the Newport Restaurant Group (who has a great rewards program). They're also on Open Table. We had a hard time getting reservations on a Monday from 5:30-8pm, and settled for something later. The restaurant was fairly full, but had a few high tops available in the bar. We were originally stuffed into a small two top in the dining area next to a prep station. We asked to move and were put in the bar at another two top. Lesson: ask for a larger table. Nathan, our server, was wonderful. Super knowledgeable and friendly. They have a large wine list and we enjoyed a bottle. We then ordered the vegan pre-fixe options (falafel, cauliflower, chocolate cake). The lentil soup on the regular menu is fantastic too! There is a lovely space on the lower level. Used to be for private parties/functions. Check it out if you get the chance. Bathrooms are down there as well. read more

Greetings! Me and my partner were here two months ago and we were amazed by how beautiful, clean and tidy the restaurant was with a view by the river. Truly magical! We sat outside in a cold winter day but something I had never seen before in a restaurant is that they had on top of our head some kind of furnace that let out heat so we would stay warm. Even tho it was so cold and windy outside we didn't feel it at all. It is a very thoughtful gesture towards the costumers and you've done a great job with it. As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed with so much kindness and they took us to our table. The waiter (so sorry I don't remember his name but he had years there and seemed very experienced) was very helpful suggesting us the best dishes considering our preferences. For starters we got calamari which was so delicious like you could taste how fresh it was! After that we ordered our entrees which my partner ordered the French Onion Burger and I got the Goat Cheese Risotto. I was so excited for the risotto but when the waiter brought it in unfortunately first thing I noticed was how greasy it was, surrounded by oil. I didn't know that it was served that way we didn't check the menu online or anything because we had no time and we just happened to stumble at "Waterman Grille" which we are very happy. the risotto was served with beets and cheese on top which unfortunate to say that's the only thing I ate from the dish and they were delicious. I tried to choke down the risotto but it was too hard it tasted very heavy (the cause must be the grease). I mostly ended up eating my partner's fries (omg they were DELICIOUS). Hahaha! Overall, we had a great time! Next time we visit again i'll probably ask for no oil (if you can do that). Everything else was amazing especially the setting I can't get over the fact of how pretty it was and we are very thankful to the staff You were amazing and did a great job. Bars to your left, open kitchen forward, dining to the right, and outdoor dining to the right also. We dine in the main floor and can view the seekonk river. I used to be the fishermen out there on my kayak catching large stripers. Once in awhile I'm out there entertaining the diners with my catch. Drink: trig point Cabernet Sauvignon, this red wine was excellent! Highly recommend! Appetizers: we ordered the calamari. The batter was crispy but the squid was on the chewy side. It had spicy aoli for dipping. Main course: hanger steak and ribeye steak. Hanger was on the chewy side but the flavor was average. The ribeye was like butter and tasted good. My fiancé was a bit disappointed because our homemade steak taste way better. We're your steak snobs and I believe the hanger steak (steak tips), some are tough and some are soft may be from different cuts. Dessert: apple walnut spice cake. What a great day! First time coming here and celebrated a birthday. We had a table outside and while it was a bit windy, they turned on the heat above to accommodate us. Now for the food: Appetizer of Korean bbq ribs that fell right off the bone and were accompanied by a refreshing (possibly a little too sweet) carrot and jicama slaw. Super scrumptious and worth trying out! Main dishes were comprised of a swordfish special that came with a brown butter sweet potato puree, bearnaise sauce, juicy asparagus and crumbly fried bits on top. Additionally, we ordered the duck plate that comes with duck breast, duck confit, roasted carrots, turnips, leek "hash" and a mustard horseradish sort of sauce. Also delicious but the swordfish was better balanced. Drinks were good but nothing to go crazy over. Crème brûlée wasn't bad! All in all, l really appreciated how relaxed the ambiance was... think classy but not stuffy. Food was tasty and portions were fair with prices. Service was attentive but not excessive. Takeout is pretty much a disaster however. Most of the food was certifiably awful. It's really a horrible waste of your money. I would give it 2 stars but I wanted to give them some credit for excellent packaging. But really, at this price point, restaurants should do more than just package food in a box and just shrug if it doesn't taste good when it gets home. They need to consider how it is eaten later, providing appropriate reheating instructions and making sure that these dishes for takeout keep appropriately. Some restaurants like Ellie's do a great job with this. Waterman Grille? Not. Just really bad at home. They really need to up their take home game. The food was bomb and the mimosas were perfect (and so many options) The second time was for my friend's rehearsal dinner and they did a great job with service, decorating and food. The location was beautiful. The third was for New Year's Eve. They were accommodating (we had reservations) and service was amazing. Not a romantic, quiet spot but the ambience is still there. I adore historic places and this joint is a converted gate house... Oodles of history in these walls. We enjoyed a decadent cheese plate with a blue, cheddar, and goat cheese offering. Accoutrements of fig jam, candied nuts and sweet / savory bread were yumoh . I think I had three (don't judge) refills of the warm sour dough bread basket. Special wood grilled veal chop was short of the medium rare I requested but still tasty. The filet blew.my.mind. My dining companion ordered medium and I was more than happy to enjoy more than a few bites of her medium rare beef. Literally... Melt in your mouth.
