I stopped by WeChat Cafe on a whim because it was close by and boy was I not disappointed. They got your basic HK Cafe foods like baked pastas and grilled chicken steaks but the thing they got me excited about was the lemon iced tea that the typical HK Cafes would have. This is one of my fav spots in the SGV, their Hong Kong style dishes are awesome and they would prepare them just the way how I remembered it back in the British Hong Kong era. Their specialties are baked pork chop fried rice and Germanic style Salty pig knuckles. Many oversea HK cafes have attempted to replicate these two common Hong Kong dishes, only couple of them have ever come close to Hong Kong original style, others were just way off, and Wechat cafe has a successful rate of 90% in my book. I love Hong Kong food, so I knew I have to try this place. I ordered through Uber eats, and got the baked chicken steak with curry, peanut butter and condensed milk toast and coffee milk tea. I honestly thought that all of them were mediocre. The baked chicken steak rice had a strong curry taste, but the flavor got really heavy after a few bites so it was quite hard to finish. For the toast, I was expecting it to be another form of toast so it was quite disappointing. The drink was not bad, I could taste both the coffee and the milk tea. We had to go to WeChat Cafe, especially after using WeChat all day at the Asian American Expo. There's plenty of parking, though it does look a bit sketch, especially in the dark, but we had no issues at all. Outside, there's patio seating under some tents and of course, there's inside seating as well. Inside, there's some signs with what I believe to be big, famous cities in Hong Kong. They speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English here. Though I found it super amusing that when my boyfriend ordered in Mandarin he got hot water and when I ordered in English, I got iced water. Haha, might be a cultural thing. All the prices of everything in their menu seem to have increased , just an FYI. We got the: 1) Horlick: -I was curious to try this out since it's a staple that lots of my Cantonese friends enjoy. -It's a mixed malt drink and it came out in a huge glass. Super sweet and milky and even after letting it dilute a bit it was still sweet and yummy. -I don't think I'd pay for it again since you can find the powder in stores just like Milo and Ovaltine, but for sure, very yummy. 2) Toast with Peanut Butter and Condensed Milk: -I actually ordered the regular toast with condensed milk and butter, but I suppose they heard me wrong, but no matter! This dish was SUPER DELICIOUS. -I was closing my eyes and my taste buds were teleported into heaven. -It comes with large pat of butter on the top and it's fried with lots of egg batter all over. Loved the crispy edges. -With the sweetness of the condensed milk, the slight saltiness of the butter, and the creamy peanut butter, it was DIVINE. -Immediately started Googling recipes on how to make it at home (fingers crossed that I can replicate this) 3) Baked Mince Beef with Cheese: -You get an option for rice or spaghetti with this and I got the spaghetti. -Simple, delicious dish. We inhaled this since we were so hungry. -Lots of cheese baked on top and came with a good amount of minced beef. -Moist, well seasoned, and flavorful. The spaghetti noodles soaked in the sauce very well. 4) German Style Pork Knuckle: -You get the option of rice or spaghetti and we also chose spaghetti. -There also the choice of sauce: black pepper, mushroom, or garlic sauce. We got the black pepper sauce. -This also came with a side of sweet chili sauce and some veggies. -It's a MASSIVE amount of meat. The skin for the pork knuckle was very crispy and crunchy, similar to lechon. Meat was moist and flavorful. Some parts were a bit chewier than my preference, but to be fair, it is from the knuckles. Came here on a Friday morning at 10:18am, they were not open yet, they waved from the inside of the locked door. On the door the earliest open time printed was 11am on almost all days that I can recall, but on Yelp it said they opened at 8am on all days. I am happy with this place as they have never canceled my order 30 minutes after receiving it like some restaurants (which is excellent as I work from home and I don't have to rush to order something else while I am working.) Baked chicken steak with sauce, baked fish filet, fish porridge, preserved egg porridge, toast with peanut butter and condensed milk are always my favorite go tos. The packaging is great, as everything always comes piping hot. I had one delivery order come 45 minutes late due to the train being stuck, and it still burned the roof of my mouth when I ate it lol. I remember eating here for breakfast a long time ago and I did not really like it, but this time I ordered dinner for pickup togo and it was a good experience. I ordered a chicken steak that came with rice ($12.50), a beef chow fun ($13.25), and singaporean style vermicelli ($13.25). Kinda pricy, but the food all tasted good and was packed fully so I was impressed. I chose mushroom sauce for my chicken steak but it was not enough and there were no mushrooms in it! I wished they made the chicken steak more crispier, although when I came home I decided to fry it again to my liking. I've heard of this place from my friend, but never got the chance to come. But here I am! My cousin came in from San Francisco, and I wanted to take her for some traditional Hong Kong breakfast. This spot is about a mile from my house, so it was convenient. Once we arrived, it was still early. Most of the OGs were already sitting down, reading their weekend paper and chatting. There was only one large table that was seated. We sat down and was immediately greeted by our waitress. I already knew I wanted to order the rice porridge, aka, jook. It was a cold morning, and there's nothing like a nice, hot bowl of jook to warm your soul. So I ordered that, and a small breakfast meal that came with milk tea and a side of noodles. We got everything out in a timely manner. The waitress did forget the side of noodles, so she quickly put that in. I started with the jook, which had preserved egg in it. SO GOOD! And fresh! I sometimes order my boyfriend food from here on Doordash to treat him, and I honestly had no idea how good it was. I ordered him the baked chicken steak curry the first time, and he was in heaven eating it. So when I was in LA, he decided to take me to the spot where I accidentally ordered him the best chicken curry ever. We started off with the steamed flour roll with beef and it was amazing! Food for their price is OK at best, but they are the only place that's open pretty late at night. The food isn't bad, however the price is kind of expensive, and the service is really poor. I called in, they said 20 minutes, I waited in my car for about extra 15. I got there and there's two people figuring out the to-go orders. Neither one even acknowledges me, even when they weren't doing anything. One guy was just looking at the other staring at him and not even looking around. Then I talked to him finally, and his english was so poor that he couldn't help me (WHICH IS FINE) but at least think of the solution- to find someone to help. And to say we thought this was going to be one of our new spots. You guys could really have it all but you had to ruin our experience at the end of the day. When we were going to pay for our two plates $35 total, he said "Sign here" and I caught on that they included an extra $8~ charge for tip on top of that, but I couldn't afford that and I clicked no tip and signed. Instead of leaving like a normal server would, your server acted surprised; even asked me if I was going to take out cash for tip! I processed the payment that way and he insisted he wanted to charge us more for tip and even went back to the page to add more on top of that. Good thing my partner made sure to tell him not to do that, to exit that page and all, because now I don't trust you with my card information if you willy nilly are capable of charging clients more. This is the place for some home-cooked Hong Kong style dishes. The inside of the cafe has names of different Hong Kong cities. Prices are slightly higher than other HK cafes but this is a mom and pop shop so I'm always happy to support local! Every dish comes with a serving of rice, which is nice since most places charge for rice now. Food: - Eggplant chicken: similar to the Sichuan eggplant at other restaurants but this is made with chicken instead of pork. Great over rice. - Bittermelon beef: usually I'm not a fan of Chinese cooked beef because of all the tenderizer that is used. But this one still tastes like beef without the extreme rubberiness. The bittermelon could have been cooked longer. Great over rice. - Bittermelon eggs: lightly scrambled eggs with Bittermelon. I prefer my scrambled eggs cooked more thoroughly. I don't know if any places were open 24/7 but it sure felt that way... after work, after the club, in the middle of the night, HK cafes were there for you. Fast forward to 2021: California has re-opened but many cafes in the 626 have shortened their normal business hours. What's a guy to do when he's feeling hungry after 10 pm and unable to manage the 45 minute drive home to Orange County on an empty stomach? WeChat Cafe to the rescue! Like the Chinese messaging app it borrows its name from, WeChat Cafe may not be best in class, but it works given the circumstances. When Baccali's closes early and I'm not feeling JJ Cafe, WeChat is a decent alternative in a pinch. It's open from 8 am to 12 am, which is 2-4 more hours longer than a lot of places in San Gabriel Valley right now. Got a classic Pork Chop & Chicken Steak combo with rice and an iced Horlick's for $26 including tax and tip; not the best version of the dish I've ever had but more than sufficient to get me on the road home. Turns out we've been spoiled with so many great late night options in SGV for years but now, with the current state of affairs, WeChat Cafe is just good enough... and for now, good enough is all you need. read more

WeChat is one of the worst Asian cafe to go to. Overprice and horrible services. The only reason I get food from there is because of the location. Today i called to place an order to go. Got there 30 min later and the lady said food not ready yet. So I waited another 10 min and asked her for status. She printed out the receipt and ask me to pay for it. When i was looking at the order, one of the item was wrong. I order cutlet chicken, she put in curry chicken. Told her it was the wrong but it's ok i'll take it since i have been waiting. Then she tell me they didnt make it yet. Told me it will be another 15-20 min by that time im already frustrated and told her to cancel the order. Just wasted my time! I always drive pass this place and decided to give it a try today. I ordered the black pepper, beef udon and my bf got the baked chicken rice. We both loved our dishes! The black pepper, beef udon was a great portion - it had lots of meat and veggies. It also had some jalapeño, giving it a nice spicy kick. Bf said he really loved the baked chicken rice although he wishes there was a little more meat than rice, however it was still delicious overall.
