Came here for a small birthday celebration dinner and felt like we found the right place. I had a bowl of vegetable soup which was heavy on the veggies and Jay the cutie bartender put a bowl of assorted crackers in front of me for my soup. My dinner was the trout which was delicious. It came with a choice of mixed or Cesar Salad. My dinner partner ordered two small plates and each one was enough to share. Pretty big small plates. I spent four years at Wake Forest and had the chance to eat here as often as I could while I was an undergrad. It's a perfect place for lunch or a casual dinner. They have a long list of sandwiches and if you don't like what they offer, you can pretty much make up your own. I used to always opt for the bacon, mushroom, and cheese grilled chicken sandwich. Combine that with some sweet tea and you got yourself a tasty meal. They have crackers on the table and we used to always dig through the pile to get to the Captain's Wafers first. Went here last week with friends. We were able to get a long table In the back for the 5 of us. I tried a new sandwich and loved it, with sweet potato fries as the side. I'd recommend honey mustard sauce to go with the fries. We all split a tres leche cake for dessert, and while it wasn't my favorite dessert, it was made very well. I have eaten at this restaurant several times over the past few years but the past 2 experiences have not been good with the one owner (woman). I only get 1 hour for lunch and West End is 4 mins from my work and the food is great. Today after we finished our food and our plates were cleared by 2 other people the lady owner came over and gave me this weird side to side look and jerked the rest of our silverware for the table. She then stood and stared at us until we left 10 mins later. Our waitress was great and apologized for the owners behavior. We were in and out of this restaurant in less than an hour. If this behavior continues she will run off her customers eventually which is a shame. I personally will not be back due to how rude she is and being made to feel like I have to rush so she can make as much money as possible read more

This restaurant was recommended by the owner of our airB&B. We were warned to 'go early' as they don't take reservations and there is open seating. Wow. Totally not disappointed. We sat at the bar so a larger party could sit at the last remaining 4 top. The bartender was a perfect server---explaining the extensive menu. I had the grilled flounder special. It was seasoned perfectly. It came with a house salad (nothing special) and a succotash of corn, tomatoes, white beans and asparagus. Sounds funky---and it worked. Absolutely amazing, and I don't give reviews that easily. The service was wonderful and helpful - and the food was out of this world good. I had the fork-tender pork shank and my friend had a delicious pastrami sandwich. We both had what we felt was the best tres leches cake either of us have ever tasted. A few days ago, while trying to pick up a paid to-go order for lunch, myself and my two young children (3 & 7) were attacked at the doorway by an employee, about not being masked. The employee gave me NO chance to put on a mask, nor did she offer me a mask. She immediately began yelling at me, while holding the door closed forcefully, and pointing to a sign about masks. If my food was not already paid for I would of left right then. However, after I told her I only needed to pick up food. She stated "I will get your food when I want to, you will be patient." (And then she immediately began to very politely help others customers. I guess in an attempt to further humiliate and dehumanize myself and my children standing outside the restaurant.) I have never been treated so rudely and attacked at a restaurant in my life. I wish I would of recorded the employees rampage. I will NEVER spend my money at this establishment again. Tucked away on West 4th Street, I feel like the West End Cafe can be overlooked at times. But every time I've eaten there, I've been very impressed with the food. It's nothing too fancy or elaborate, and the term "casual American" does seem very apt. They have very good sandwiches and hamburgers, things like that. I generally have their chicken caesar salad when I'm there, and it's very good if not terribly fancy. Strangely enough, the restaurant closes all day on Sunday. This seems like a restaurant that would be perfect for a Sunday lunch or dinner. But it works just as well on Monday-Saturdays as well. The times I've gone, which has included right in the heart of the dinner rush, there has been ample seating and no real wait. The staff was very quick and very,very friendly. Again, not the restaurant you want to go to if you're looking for something very fancy and elaborate. This place is EXCELLENT. Clean. Quaint. Fantastic service. I went for lunch for the first time on 12/21/2015 and just sat at the bar. The sweet tea was perfect! I was served almost immediately. Ordered my food and had it within 10 minutes and the place was packed. I ordered a Roast Beef and Provolone sandwich on sourdough bread with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. They threw the roast beef and provolone on the grill to get it nice and warm, and they also toasted the sourdough bread to perfection. Honestly... It was one of the most simple, yet flavorful things I've ever eaten. I HIGHLY Recommend the sourdough bread! They offer a variety of other lunch and dinner options as well. We used to go to West End Cafe a lot when I was younger and I loved it. Back then I thought it was a chill atmosphere, even at a young age haha. Their waiting area outside consists of benches that go with the flow of the pathway to get up to the door. Those benches back up to a small pond. We visited the other day and I wasn't really impressed with the food. Atmosphere, again, was still pretty chill. They had candles going at each table which makes for an intimate setting when the sun goes down because it's a smaller restaurant. We heard some Red Hot Chili Peppers & nine inch nails come out of the speakers which was a definite bonus! I ordered a Reuben with pastrami/corned beef meat combo which came like usual on rye bread with thousand island dressing & sour kraut. The sandwich was $10 so I'm expecting a darn good sandwich because I can drive 10 minutes from my house to a "local (to my county)" restaurant & pay $6 for one that's very delicious. Well the rye bread tasted nice by it's self. I do believe the sour kraut overwhelmed the whole sandwich. I'm not saying it was bad, I just won't order it again. My boyfriend ordered the Carolina burger which he deemed "pretty good". It was a larger sized burger with chili, mustard, slaw and onions. We both got pasta salad and thought it was a little too twangy. Service was fair. We both had water and were sitting near the service station but ran out of water basically the whole time there. We ate at the West End Café before they moved into their current location years ago. They have a great menu and service. For years we only ate the sandwiches and I have tried most of them on the menu as well as many of the salads. We tried the entrees a few years ago and they are really well prepared. For years they won the Tanglewood Chili Cookoff and their chili is excellent. I will warn you though it has a slow burn and by the last bite you are getting the heat! Still with a little sour cream and cheese it mellows out nicely. A cup of this and a grilled cheese sandwich makes a great inexpensive meal. I have also eaten a number of their entrees as has my wife. She is in love with the Truffle Ravioli. She always finishes every bite. The Petite Pot Raost is a favorite of mine. If you ever see Banana Chocolate Chip cake on the dessert menu be sure and order a piece when you order your meal or they will run out! Over the years we had many excellent meals as well as a few that fell a little short. I highly recommend this restaurant. However, the last time I went with my boyfriend the waitress ( dark long hair) was the rudest waitress, ever. She literally slung our food on table, didn't fill up any of our glasses the whole time, and huffed with an attitude when we were not ready to order. She wasn't pleasant, happy, or even nice. My family and I have been going here for years, and we have never been disappointed in either the food, nor the service. I love that I can order anything from a ham and cheese sandwich to an amazing filet mignon. They cover all price points; and ALL of their food is absolutely delicious. If you order off the regular menu it's mediocre at best. Order from the handwritten dinner menu. Its considerably pricier than the regular menu but the food is always outstanding. One of my very, very favorite restaurants ever. I grew up eating at west end (we used to hike up the hill to order an egg salad sandwich with allowance money as kids, back when it was in a trailer). Since then, the service is amazing at least 90% of the time, and there's very little wait staff turn over. The food is very dependable. The burger and fries is one of my favorite meals, ever. The wine pours are generous. The entrees and seasonal meals are sometimes a little weird, but more often than not, they're worth ordering.
