Looks like he was the bartender - bar did have people too. Took awhile to get some food going as well, but we did eventually. Staff was friendly, so other than the waiting, it was a great time. Sherman Oaks is gritty and the section of Ventura Boulevard that houses TLP is almost brutalist in its anti-establishment aesthetic. You would never know it was here if you didn't either live in the neighborhood or seek it out as I did. It is sandwiched between a completely non-descript place that I didn't even look at and a crystals shop with grafitti-etched windows (unfortunately!) but some really cool beads. Inside is the same -- no frills, a dress-down and survive-if-you-dare vibe. My pictures will illustrate what I mean. Nevertheless, the friendly service (shout out to our server, Patrick), the menu, and the quality of the food are well worth it. Again, see what we ordered in the photos attached. Everything was delicious. The floor, tables, and chairs were all clean. There is some kind of post-apocalypse rhumba going on with the ceiling treatment. It is almost reverse-logic art with all the shading (stains? velour movement?) and utilitarian installation it reveals. Love the walls though, and the worn distressed wood everywhere (see the pix, folks). A bonus was watching the Masters (Patrick let us linger) and sitting by a giant window that was open to the street. Parking is up a block or so on either side. We always find safe spots in Sherman Oaks. The music seemed to be one CD of an unknown (to me) vocal artist and was pleasant. The crowd was friendly and the whole atmosphere was like one big homey grunge party. You know those mornings you fall out of bed and almost don't want to change out of your pajamas or yoga threds? Whether you're meeting friends for brunch, having a business meeting, or simply enjoying a quiet morning, Sweet Butter has a way of making ordinary moments feel memorable. And if you are an east coast transplant like me, you will see a lot of friends here. What I love most is that it has heart. You have to order your food inside the cafe but you cannot sit in there, it's too small and they do not have tables. I did not order food so I cannot give an opinion about it. I ordered a large English breakfast hot tea with steamed oat milk on the side. Technically it's not a latte but on my receipt it says latte and they charged me $6.50 for it. Then, they added $2 for large. I am guessing for the large cup? For the oat milk I paid an extra $0.95. After tax I ended up paying $10.37 for a bag of tea and some oat milk which is pretty HILARIOUS!!!! The owner must be pretty delusional but also rich! I have never paid such a ridiculous price for a simple tea but maybe they sprinkled it with some gold dust which would justify the exorbitant amount! Anyway I sat outside on the outdoor patio and I realized that the patrons there are special people (or at least that's how they see themselves). The vibe is pretty pretentious but I was just minding my own business and enjoying my peace which got quickly disturbed by two wannabe actors who sat right next to me and started speaking so loud because you know how they like for others to hear about their impressive resume. Deal with the Devil is my favorite IPA here. Ordering is easy, just go to the bar, place your order (check the paper menus by the register first), open a tab and they'll give you a number to put on your table. Wait for your food to arrive and enjoy! Don't forget the beers! For food, our go to is always their pizza (check out the cheese pull in my photos) and fougasse. Our kids love the pizza and plain curly fries. Chicken wings and their Caesar salad is good too! We miss the panna cotta they used to have. They were delicious! The cookies are a good substitute for that sweet craving after a meal. Parking can be difficult and stressful at times to find a spot. You'll have to drive around to find one. They have parking in front of the brewery, but it's VERY limited. We Uber with friends and family sometimes to avoid the stress of finding parking. Staff is always kind and always there to make suggestions on the beers they serve. Don't forget to take a photo in their photo booth before you leave! For $7, you'll be able to take 3 photos and the machine will print two copies for you. Awesome souvenir that you and your partner will be able to take one home!

And the glass of wine was a nice pour and a decent wine. I like that they let you in for something to drink before officially opening for the day. Cue record scratch... now about that food. No, we did not order the wrong thing and no, IMO, they were not just having a bad day. Look at these Huevos Rancheros with "house hash, tostadas and 3 eggs"... those are chips (I think from a bag of tortilla chips) so not really a tostada, no way there were three eggs in that thing (from what I could see)... not sure what the "house hash" is but nothing I could identify on the plate. I know a lot of people might leave a restaurant and say "I could have made that at home" but there is no way I would make something this crappy at home. LOOK at this Avocado Toast with "avocado spread"... that is some thin smear of something green but when you are calling something "Avocado Toast" there should be a substantial amount of the hero ingredient (and maybe not call it "avocado spread" on your menu description. To me, that says, "Look we don't want to call this a "rustic mash of avocado" or "Hass smash" or "hand-crushed ripe avocado" because we know you are actually going to SEE it in front of you in about 15 minutes and "avocado spread" won't lead to a major disappointment." But it did. And this slab of dry plywood that they were calling toast. I turned to my wife and in my best Sebastian Manascalco said, "Why would you do that??" This place mostly failed on food. The food at the other tables looked equally pathetic. Gotta say... all of the cooked egg components of each dish were decent but the rest of the items were like WTF? Ambiance? It's OK... I mean it was a bar with a ton of TVs going. Semi-nice vibe for a sports bar... lots of room. Just can't get over the food. We ate about half of our sodium bombs and left.
