My husband and I went back to Whiskey Cake to give it a second try. This time the experience was much better. We did try all new menu items this time and enjoyed each one. We started with fried green tomatoes, they were light and perfectly crispy. The entrees were also delicious, I had the chef's special sandwich of the day. Out shopping the other day at the rim and we were getting hungry so I looked on the map for what was around. Saw the whiskey Cafe and remembered reading about it on line in a face book group. Took me a few minutes to find it. I really liked the atmosphere and the lay out of the place and there was some really eclectic sitting pieces. We sat on a couch with a a coffee table , it was very comfy. Our waitress was a sweetheart and new everything on the menu and was able to answer all our questions. I had the old fashion, it was up there with one of the best, you would be amazed how many people mess it up. For the starters we had the bacon and the roasted veggies, the bacon was good and flavorful, it was definitely presented well. The Veggie were roasted to protection in my opinion, however what ever seasons they used was a bit too salty for me, but I still ate them. I had the short rib with the Brussels sprouts, the meat was tender and juicey I was inshore rib heaven, the sauce over it was tasted and truly compliment the meat. The sprouts were tasty themselves and I am very picky about them. Let's face it if you don't cook them right they can be not to pleasant. Guess what I had for dessert - you guessed right the whiskey cake, OMG . This was a gooey covered nut slice of decadence. Went there for dinner with three friends. They seated us in the area near the bar. It was loud and we had to shout at each other in order to have a conversation. The goat cheese fondue was excellent and the whiskey cake was good, although a little too sweet for my taste. The waitperson was attentive. Overall, the food was good, the service was good, but the restaurant is too noisy to have a conversation. The management should keep in mind that most people like to talk while they are having dinner. read more

Good, substantial food. That said, we would not drive across town to make a special trip. We had the farm bird with roasted Brussels sprouts and the french toast Monte cristo. Both were good, but nothing overly special. The menu is fairly extensive: burgers, salads, soup, chili, side dishes, breakfast (brunch) items, salmon, appetizers, alcoholic drinks out the wazoo. This is a long over due review. I have been back 3 times already since initially trying this Place. It's right next to the Yard House I like to frequent and decided to give this place a try instead. Everything is locally grown so the food tastes so fresh and light. Every time we go we order the candied bacon and deviled eggs. Everything is so good and well plated you would think it costs more than it does ! I have went for dinner and Brunch and left satisfied for both! The help staff is so friendly but I STRONGLY suggest making a reservation or you'll be waiting for hours for a table. Shoot even with reservations... make it 30 minutes earlier than you plan to arrive just to make sure you are seated on time. This place is worth the wait! The food here is delicious, service was friending but just a tad slow - nothing really to complain about. I thought for the price there should have been more table staff. I've enjoyed their name's sake for dessert several times and they really know how to make an old fashioned which I find to be rare. The service was good. They did bring me the wrong burger and I didn't even notice. A different waiter came and apologized and asked if I wanted the right burger and that he would wrap up the incorrect burger to take home. Burger was huge, couldn't even finish it. Whiskey Cake is sort of a hybrid between the two, with locations in a handful of cities (SA and Plano, that I know of) but sources their foods from Texas producers. Crispy Chicken Salad was fresh and filling. DH had the half-chicken which was juicy, well-seasoned, and complemented by crunchy, colorful cauliflower--which were surprisingly tasteful! DD's grilled cheese from the Kids Menu (see photo) was big enough to take half home. The 40-min wait on a Saturday evening was alleviated by the surplus of shops nearby and the free caramel candies in their whimsical waiting area. read more

My nephew who was visiting San Antonio to visit his new employer, USAA, asked if he could take me and my wife to dinner so we came to Whiskey cake. It looked busy and full of millennials doing their thing of socializing and dining. Our server was very informative and convinced us to try the "pig's ears" appetizer (did not like it) because she said that it might be as good as calamari (it was not). We tried a couple of their artisan beers and they were pretty tasty. I will give our server credit for that. The food was very good. It's classic American comfort food. We wanted to try their desserts but we just could not swallow any more food after such a big meal. We just watched other people at other tables enjoy them! read more

Depending on the day, service can go above and beyond or not pay attention to you at all, hence the one star dock. My favorite drink of ALL time is their Irish coffee (off menu). I swear there isn't a better one in the world. I usually get the turkey burger with lettuce instead of the bun or the bacon and egg salad! My husband and I visited the San Antonio location on Sept 26th 2x that day. Fact is the brunch we had was amazing. I ordered the 3 little pigs for my meal, my husband had the big "f" burger. We shared the smoked chopped chicken salad. We had the craft drinks and all I can say is EVERYTHING was delicious. We enjoyed our experience so much that went back for Social Hour, and we were not disappointed. Drinks were on point, and we ordered the Wagyu corn dogs and the BBQ spiced pork rinds. Actually had a great meal and service experience here. Verdict: Highly recommended if you find yourself at La Cantera We started off with the Local Board, which had pretty standard fare but delicious meats and cheeses (prosciutto, something that tasted like cheddar, and some other cheese I couldn't ID). The sausage on the Board was definitely the highlight. Also had some Pimento Cheese, Dijon mustard, and some chutney thing that I didn't touch. A bit pricey but overall worth it. Drinkswise I had the Guava Gimlet but swapped the vodka for Hendricks gin which made it perfect (on my second round they forgot and made it with vodka and it was substantially worse). I liked the drink because it was a bit sweet but not overly so. Could have been a bit colder is all I would ask for. I also tried the Mule'ers Day Off, which was worse. Wasn't horrible but would not recommend (I usually like mules a lot). Finally, we shared the Chicken Noodle Soup and that was perfect (especially the small portion size of the cup when you're not hungry). We also had the Bacon and Egg Salad and couldn't have asked for a better one. The dressing was light and not overbearing but there was enough of it and it was tossed well. Pomegranate was a great touch. Temperature inside was well-controlled so we were comfortable and I appreciate the egg crates on the ceiling that helped dampen noise so it never felt too loud inside even though there were lots of people and it was busy. Four of us went there on a Thursday night for dinner. The experience was excellent. We were seated right away and our server, Janice, was also excellent. One in our group is a vegan and Janice was able to offer options on how to make some of their items vegan friendly. I had the redfish and it was spectacular. I will definitely be going back to this whiskey cake location. I useD to eat at the Plano TX location frequently but in the past couple of years it hasn't been good.
