The stewed pork chop was thick, tender, and flavorful. They gave the whole basket of popcorn chicken to go with the rice set. The Taiwanese sausage is pretty good. The service is attentive. I came here three days in a row. Somehow I had forgotten how good their tea was and when I tried it again my taste buds orgasmed and I needed more. I like Why Thirsty's food, but not amazing as when they first started. This usually tends to happen after awhile, same with Whatever Tea. But like Whatever Tea, this place shines the brightest in terms of high quality tea and food places. Only thing I would have to warn people is that it's small and if you're there on a busy day, you might have to wait for a spot. Also, wifi, and NOT cash only, thank the boba god above them. P.S. I really wanted to like Why Thirsty. Their logo has a pink unicorn in it. What can be better than that? Came in for take out. Got their railroad chicken because it was in so many yelp pitures and their formosa oolong iced tea. The food was nothing special. I was concerned that the pork chops would be tough as some of the other reviews had suggested, but the texture wasn't the main problem. The main problem is simply that it seriously lacked flavor. I did enjoy the side dishes. The pickled stuff could have been a bit less sweet and a bit more pickled, but I finished it all off. My friend got the popcorn chicken which I did not get a chance to try, but it looked tasty in the bag. I got the formosa iced tea to make the credit card minimum. I have never had a sweetened Oolong before and can comfortably say will likely never have one again. As a general rule, I like my teas (and coffees) unsweetened. Sweetened black tea I can enjoy, less so with green tea, but Oolong sweetened is just unbearable. Everything I enjoy about Oolong is ruined by sugar. Also, their Oolong tasted more bitter than I am used to drinking it, so even if the sweetness wasn't a problem it still does not seem like they're serving up great Oolong. For the price, you do get a spectacularly generous amount of food. However, none of it is anything I'm too keen on eating. So sad. Waste of a good logo. read more

I was super intrigued by the name of this place - Why Thirsty??! It sort of reminded me of Why So Serious?????! I just had to try it for the name! I digress. I've been craving taiwanese food lately, so who better to take than my friend who just came back from Taiwan (I'm a wonderful friend, I know). This place is all the rave of the 626 as of late. Located in the plaza with the Petco and the Trader Joes on Rosemead - this place and the plaza are a bit easy to miss. Parking is horrible (I got pushed all the way back to the other side of the plaza) and the wait time on a Friday night is LONG. Party of 4 around 7 ish took about 45 minutes to get seated. However, I admit for the tea it was worth the wait. They use really good quality tea here that's fresh. Actually everything here is made fresh to order and service was very attentive. They also speak English well! I also got to try: Beef Noodle Soup: I wasn't quite expecting this to be different from the beef noodle soup I'm used to. The meat wasn't in chunks, but rather thin slices and had a flavor that was similar to black pepper beef. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to beef noodle soup, so I couldn't really appreciate this. I wouldn't recommend this dish, nor would I order it again. Basil Chicken: This was a pretty flavorful dish. The veggies that came with it were delicious too. Pork Chop: Oh my goodness. This is one of the best TW porkchops I've had. The meat was so tender and flavorful. I'd definitely get this next time I'm there. Sweet Potato Fries - These were on the salty and sweet side. Good, but I'm not a huge fan of sweet potato fries to begin with. I probably wouldn't have gotten these if they hadn't run out of the popcorn chicken. Popcorn chicken! I SHALL RETURN. While I didn't love the odd location, small quarters, and overly snobby nature of the other customers (I won't say more about that), the Carribean special tea was delicious, not too sweet, and had little flowers inside. I came from SF and visited my brother last weekend. My brother told me there was a place that had good and healthy milk tea. When I tried the boba milk tea here, OH MY GOODNESS!!! I think it is the best BOBA milk tea I've ever had!!!! AWESOME!!! I think they use real milk and good tea to make it!!! I also tried their popcorn chicken , very good taste!!!! Just another ordinary boba joint in the 626. Service/ Atmosphere: Don't really have much to say about the service other than it was not to bad. As for the atmosphere, this place is pretty small and it was a full house when I went in today (Friday) around 7:30 pm so I suggest coming during odd hours to guarantee yourself a table.Music consists of a mix of mostly Mandarin and some Korean songs. I personally enjoyed the Mandarin songs because it was a nice change to the mainstream stuff I always listen to on the radio. Food: During my visit, I ordered the Railroad and the Assam Milk Tea. I decided to get the Railroad (pork chop) rice because it was highly recommended by fellow yelpers and I am so sorry to say but it was an utter disappointment. The pork chop was cold and the sides were so salty. Even on an empty stomach, this did not do anything for me. The sides consisted of corn, vegetable melody, and two types of pickled vegetables: one that was purely pickled vegetables and the second was pickled vegetables with bean curd. Overall, I would probably never order this dish again. The Assam Milk Tea on the other hand was really good though. I asked for half sugar and less ice and they made it just right. I think this is the first place that I have seen serve Assam Milk Tea in the 626, so now I know where to go to get my fix. Overall, the food was a disappointment but the drink was delicious. I really, really wanted to like Why Thirsty, and my opinion is finally coming around after multiple attempts. I hear people rave about how their tea is fresh brewed and so superior to other places. I would agree that their tea drinks are good, but I think a lot of places are good and this place was no more memorable to me than the others, except for the fact that I've been told by so many people how great it is. --- CLOSED ON SUNDAYS... Dang! Everyone needs a break, but why not on a slow weekday instead? Let's face it. Everybody does their grocery shopping at Trader Joe's on the weekend, and I always come here forgetting that they're closed on Sunday. They must be doing really well for themselves to turn away so much business. --- RAILROAD PORK... I like that it doesn't have bones in it. This dish is their flying standard, and is decent. I like that they include plenty of veggies. --- PREMIUM BEEF RICE... I didn't like this. I think it was covered in that Chinese Sha-Cha Jiang paste made from dried fish/shrimp, which made it super salty. --- MINCE MEAT RICE BOWL... This was OK. It was kind of salty due to the presence of lots of pickled vegetables. I'm more a fan of TBay's version, or even Tea Station's version. --- OCTOPUS TOTS... I didn't like this. Octopus Tots must be the cleverest marketing spin I've ever heard. It's really just a squid ball, cousin of the fish ball. --- TOFU TOTS... I didn't like this. It was totally covered in pepper salt and tasted like MSG overload. --- LAVENDER MILK TEA... This was tasty. It had a very fragrant lavender flavor throughout. I ordered "less sweet" and it still came out very sweet, which was fine and what I expected. --- TAKE-OUT... I ordered take-out recently of a Railroad Pork and Mince Meat Rice Bowl and it was surprisingly ready in about 5 minutes. Why Thirsty is a random tea place right next to Trader Joes. If you have a sec to take a closer look at their logo- its pretty funny how many things they crammed into one logo. Anyway to the point, it's a small cafe but they seem to make really quality tea drinks seemingly w/ none of that powdery fake shiz. I got a rose black tea where they even added dried mini roses to my drank. What a great touch! My friend had the assam milk tea with boba and that tasted really legit...They take time to brew their tea, and if it's not ready, you'll have to wait for a fresh batch. What a good sign! Ok gang, what is up with these great little cafes in my hood. Oh wait that part is great! This place is small but it has great food and fantastic teas. If you have anything have the sweet potato fries, they are delicious! They actually taste like sweet potatoes, crunchy on the outside and smooth and creamy on the inside, with this wonderful buttery, salty, and sweet flavor. There are never any to take home because they give you a generous portion but you eat them all.....wuhahahahaha.... The pork chop is wonderful, along with the Octo tots, and try the popcorn chicken it's to die for ask for it spicy yummmy! But the teas are great, there is a formosa hot tea that is infused tea with peach. It's slightly sweet and tastes like peaches, I had the hot milk tea without the boba, again wonderful. The Zen Tea master mixer is great and he does a great job. It's a great little cafe and has wi-fi and music videos on the TV, so go have some tasty tasty eats, and fun. Service is amazing! The employee was wonderful and very friendly :) The place is very small, but their teas are definitely fresh and all natural. I made sure there were no sugar or syrups used in my drink (rose jasmine tea) and the employee assured me the drink was made with real rose petals. The drink had 3 rosebuds on top as a decorative, cute factor and indeed, the tea was fresh and strong! Deep jasmine green tea flavor with a lighter, floral-rose taste laced into every sip. The grass jelly was also good and without any added sugar/syrup (most shops place their grass jelly in sweet syrup). I am DEFINITELY coming here again! always think about stopping by here when we go to trader joes. came on a saturday night and decided to get some stuff to go. viet got one of their milk teas and their popcorn chicken. they have a $10 minimum for credit card charges so i decided on getting their noodle soup too. there isn't really isn't a designated waiting area, but food came out quick enough. the milk tea was good. popcorn chicken was quite tasty and the chicken pieces are very generous. the noodle soup came with soup on the side and a separate box filled with minced meat and veggies. only downside is, by the time we got home, the noodles had solidified into a large mass that even the soup couldn't unwind. a lot of food but a little bland for my tastes. will definitely stop by again on another tj's trip and try some other dishes. read more

Why so thirsty? When it's 80 degrees in January, you will know why I'm thirsty. Luckily this quaint little restaurant is here to quench my thirst. Located in the Trader Joe's plaza, parking can be a struggle but I got lucky and was able to find a spot right when I arrived. Walking in you are greeted with two rows of seating separated with a walkway down the middle. Kinda like a wedding chapel but not really. You know what I mean. It's very small with probably 10 tables in total. It's like the equivalent of a hole in the wall Mexican joint. Walking up to the counter, I told the waitress that I was ordering drinks to go. After looking over the menu for a bit, I ended up getting the Formosa Oolong Tea with Aloe, a Osmanthus Oolong Tea with Boba, and a Passion Fruit Oolong Tea. I'm pretty particular with how I like my drinks and asked them all for half sugar and half ice. Don't want that ice to dilute my drink now... After paying, I was offered a stamp card and waited at a nearby table for the drinks. Handcrafted drinks made to order. It isn't too special not since almost all boba places do that now but still bears mentioning. After waiting about 5 minutes, a waiter brought out our drinks in a bag, with a carrier and all labeled. (Now that some thorough service right there) The drinks were all great. I can see why everyone mentions the Formosa Oolong Tea. Full flavored and with tons of aloe. I did NOT get ripped off for the aloe. It was perfectly sweetened and the perfect amount of ice so that it kept the drink cold but also didn't mess with the flavor. I took a sip (or a few sips) of the osmanthus oolong tea and it was also full of flavor and the boba was perfectly looked. Finally, the passion fruit oolong team was the perfect amount of passion fruit flavor. I honestly have no complaints about this place. The service was great and comprehensive; the drinks were one of the best I've had in a while, the place is convenient and clean. The food smells amazing and I'm already ready to go back to try that out. After coming here, you won't be thinking why you are thirsty anymore. Instead you will be thinking, why can't you be more thirsty so that you can just go down the menu to order more things. read more

I really like this Taiwanese restaurant! They have 'lunchbox' options reminiscent of what you get in Taiwan, esp the 'railroad box' option. We got the railroad box, the popcorn chicken lunchbox, and the Taiwanese noodle. I tried a bit of all 3 and they were all pretty legit tasting! And for the price, you get a good amount of food. The bf and I split the railroad box option easily. Their drinks are also fabulous! I love that they have unique options not found at most other tea houses, such as Assam milk tea and longan and jujube tea, which we got. Absolutely LOVED these two options! Staff here are very friendly. The restaurant space is on the smaller side, but the food comes out quick and if you order to-go you really don't wait long at all. Came here looking for some good authentic Taiwanese food with a few friends and ended up very disappointed. The waitresses were not very attentive and one waitress had a terrible haircut but I won't go into detail. She had an attitude and didn't seem happy to be there. My friend's Taiwanese lo mien was not up to standards and required a lot of chili oil for her to consider it to taste okay. I guess it was pretty bland. I ordered a spicy beef noodle stew, and I was looking forward to it. However, it was not good. It was strangely extremely sweet and spicy at the same time. The sweet flavor really threw me off and I did not enjoy it. My other friend ordered the Sacha Beef Noodle which suddenly became the Premium Beef Noodle when it got to our table? We were so confused and had to ask the waitress with the anime hair to say what the food item was in Chinese. Only then did we know what it was. Apparently it was also very sweet and tasted like chicken? Weird. Overall a pretty bad experience and we will not be back. I understand it's probably called Why Thirsty cause the food is terrible. Michelle P. suggested this place as the newest "it" place in SGV for drinks and Taiwan food- considering I've been in the motherland for a month, I bow down to her knowledge. Next door to a Trader Joes, the parking is atrocious and people WILL try to run you over. Friday night wait? Terrible. The food was average. We made a mistake ordering the premium beef noodle soup which tasted like yoshinoya beef bowl with soup base. Weirdly sweet. I think we should have stuck with the regular, which looks more like nomal beef noodle soup. Not a fan of the sweet sukiyaki style. Basil chicken was alright in my taste but K complained it was on the dry side. The sides for all the dishes were the best part though- everything tasted simple but flavorful and fresh. Yummy veggies! I liked their sweet potato fries and pork chop- anything fried floats my boat, and these were done wonderfully. The pork chop was meaty and savory and not too oily while the sweet potato fries were dusted in a seasoning powder. Teas were their strongest points and I could taste that they brewed their own teas instead of using powders, which earns a star all by itself. I recommend the rose milk tea and the samurai, which is a brown rice green tea. Light on the palatte but very refreshing. They ran out of popcorn chicken after we waited almost an hour for a table for 4! :( I was sad but I suppose it gives me an excuse to drive back. This is one of my favorite Taiwanese spots in the SGV, most notably for their rice dishes, popcorn chicken, and tea. Few places serve tea as high quality as this tiny spot, and with all the boba places around to choose from, this one is a gem if you value tea. I typically order the Railroad (super tender braised pork chop) or minced meat rice because I tend to like simpler dishes. Vegetables like corn, pickled radish, and a mixture of cabbage, broccoli, and carrots are served with each rice bowl. These aren't spectacular, but I do appreciate the greens. When they first opened, I tried a noodle dish, and it was not good. They might have changed it since a few years ago, but that experience put me off trying any other noodles they served. Popcorn chicken is great because they fry basil with them, giving it more flavor and a nice smell. The batter isn't too thick and has a nice crunch. Sweet potato fries are solid too, and they add a plum powder on top for more flavor. For teas, I'm partial to Jasmine. However, Assam is a fantastic black tea, and the Formosa Sweet has a lovely, refreshing peach (with an actual dried peach inside!) flavor for hot days. Since Trader Joe's and Petco are no longer in this plaza, parking has become extremely easy. read more

Go for the drinks, stay for the food.. or just stay for the drinks too. The menu at Why Thirsty is decent. It serves what I like to call 'Taiwanese Cafe Food'. It isn't a full blown menu but rather has bentos. I've had a few of the dishes and while it isn't fine dining, it fits the need for a simple night out for some home style cooking. Beef Noodle Soup: Decent broth. Definitely could have had a bit more pepper. Noodles were a bit on the soggy side and very flavorless. I'm pretty sure they just buy pre-made noodles from the market and boil them. I'm a fan of fresh hand cut noodles, but alas i'm being picky. The beef was good but nothing special. Mince meat over rice: Simple dish of ground beef slightly seasoned with a bit of the juices over rice. It was good but very light on flavor. Vegie side dishes were good. Shredded Chicken Noodles: Really good and light! The flavor was great but once again, I wish they made the noodles fresh. It definitely reminded me of the noodles you get at 711 or the OK store in Taiwan. They're always a guilty crappy pleasure of mine. Formosa Milk Tea: Simply delicious and one of the 2 reasons why I go to Why Thirsty. It's really savory but not too sweet. This is how a milk tea should always taste! The Samurai: Genmaicha I think? It's delicious and refreshing and I always feel like there isn't enough. It always quenches my thirst and doesn't seem too bad for me haha. All and all, Why Thirsty has become a frequented spot. I will begin by stating that I'm writing with an extra dash of bias. I really like the dry noodle here simply because it tastes similar to what I would get from market hawkers growing up. The nostalgic factor got me excited but the good food is what keeps bringing me back The dry noodle, especially ordered with "onion oil" is just a bliss. Ok, the noodle is not handmade and even the shallot based "onion oil" sauce may have came in a can but they're just so good. I can't get enough of it. I order it with either the pork chop or pop-corn chicken. The pork chop may be thinner comparing to the best of LA but the marinate is good. The fried chicken nuggets (salt & pepper) is a guilty pleasure of mine and what I end up ordering most of the time. I really like their generous use of basil with the popcorn chicken, as how it should be done in Taiwan. For sides, I highly recommend the sweet potato fries. Again, the sweet potato brings back childhood memory. They do a good job with cutting the potato long, thin and thinly battered fried. It is served with a nice dash of plum seasoning which greatly compliment the sweet potato fries. The drinks are pretty good too. I would suggest go with the high mountain oolong or the classics (milk tea). Even though you probably aren't getting real high mountain oolong (for tea enthusiast you know what I'm talking about) but it does taste more refreshing than the usual black or "green" tea; I commend them for putting it on the menu. The rice plates are A-OK and beef noodle soup probably isn't the best item on the menu. The consistency can be a concern as food tends to taste better on the weekends in my experience. There are other ways to poke holes and you can challenge my praise for this place. I came here on a tuesday night, and it was... empty. :\ However, my friend told me they've opened for couple years already and during weekends it can be crowded. I had their signature railroad pork chop rice. It was DELICIOUS! I was really really surprised that how delicious it was since there was no customer on a tuesday night ha. The pork chop was very well marinated, tender and juicy. the flavor is more taiwanese flavor, a bit more sweet. just the way i like :D Marinated cucumber - very very well marinated. I couldn't stop eating it because it was that good. Highly recommend. Beef noodle soup - i was quite disappointed. I got to be honest their beef noodle soup really isnt that good. The broth was kind of weird. I wouldn't recommend you to get their beef noodle soup. Also another reason that is a 4 star is because their booth seating is kind of dirty. I have not tried their food, so I cannot give them 5 stars, but I am in love with their teas! Each cup is brewed and made to order! Their green tea is already sweetened and tastes like honey green tea at most boba shops. A large cup will cost you about $4 and another 50 cents if you want to add boba. Boba is okay. I prefer boba from Half & Half. I have had their premium milk tea (which is their version of boba milk tea) and it is ok. Not my favorite. We came here on a friday afternoon at 3pm with no wait. My boyfriend and I shared the railroad which is pork chop (not fried) over rice with a side of vegetables. The pork chop has a sweet taste. It was yummy for me, but not for my boyfriend. We also shared the popcorn chicken with lo mein noodles and we both loved the popcorn chicken.
