I searched for an upscale vegetarian restaurant, and Wink was one of the few choices that appeared in my Yelp search. I made a reservation online and mentioned my friend is a vegetarian in the memo note. Wink's location is difficult to find, and our uber driver circled around the area twice. Luckily, I saw a faint 'wink' sign that is in the inner corner of the parking lot. It's in the building behind another building. Upon entrance, the restaurant is small and intimate, so the restaurant is more for dates or a small group. We were immediately seated near the windows and greeted by our two servers. One of them informed us about the 5-course meal with wine pairing, which is what Wink is known for. We decided on the pairing and waited for the feast to begin. Food with wine pairing: Hamachi Kinilaw with Farm Onion, Yuzu Kosho, and Cucumber (3/5): This was my middle preference of all the dishes. It was just OK, a simple and light dish to start off with. Scallops with Chilled Barley Salad, Castelveltrano Olive, Suyo Long Cucumber, and Tomatillo Vinaigrette (4/5): This was my favorite from the two scallops to the concocted salad. Scallops were not overcooked, but the flavor that stood out was the combination of the salad, olives, cucumber, and the vinaigrette. I would have eaten more of this if they offered. Duck Breast with Yukon Golds, Oyster Mushrooms, Fennel, and Horseradish Sauce (2/5): 2nd least favorite. Duck breast wasn't overcooked. I just couldn't put a finger on what exactly, but something was lacking. The only flavor was some salt served with potatoes. I really enjoyed the red wine that was paired, but that was it. Hanger Steak with Red Lasodas, Green Bean, Roasted Tomato, and Romesco Sauce (3/5): 2nd most favorite. However, my friend and I preferred the wine that was with the duck breast than the one they offered for the steak. El Rey Chocolate Cake (2/5): This was my least favorite. It was small, and I didn't like the flavor - very rich and flourless. My friend said he enjoyed his 5-course meal, but I wasn't sure if he did entirely. It seemed like dishes contained the same thing with some alternations, which was exhibited in the 3 potato dishes he had. Our two servers were friendly. One of them was starting, so he forgot some ingredients twice and came back to inform us. We didn't mind. Would I come back? It wouldn't be me initiating it. I've had other pairings with a similar price. However, Wink has its own wine bar and restaurant separated - two establishments that make it a whole. This review is for the wine bar at Wink. We chose this for a girls' pre-game before we went down the road to St Martin's church for the Christmas concert given by the Austin Gay Men's Chorus (highly recommended too!). The atmosphere at Wink bar is delightful. This night they were all decked out with Christmas decorations. It's swanky and comfortable and cozy and neighborly in there. We sat at the bar, and our bartender was Fernando - and he was utterly charming and funny. The three of us girls shared a bottle of bubbles (or two), some castlevetrano olives, edamame, and the bruschetta sampler. Everything was perfect. We can't wait to go back. read more

We stopped by for happy hour (5-7) and it was amazing! They expanded their bar menu and they have so many choices now. They don't take bar reservations, but there were a couple tables open. The bar is in a narrow separate room. It's a dark, lively space. We ordered the chicken liver mousse, escargot, and bruschetta trio. The food was served quickly and it were just SO good. There was mushroom cream sauce on the pasta that came with the escargot. I usually hate mushroom with a burning passion, but the sauce was heavenly. The toasted focaccia used for the bruschetta was superb. Every type of bruschetta was great, but my favorite was the roasted tomato. Our bill only came out to $22 for two people. Hamachi Sashmi- super butterly and delicious Seared scallops- super soft and chewy at the same tim Striped bass with cucumber- this was an interesting combo for sure, not my cup of tea, but worth the experience. Thai beef salad- absolutely delicious! Loved this item! Duck Breast- Super Delicious! My Favorite of them all! Red Deer - This wasn't my favorite, but it was decent! Hanger Steak- Delicious!!! Loved it! El Rey Chocolate Cake- It seemed pretty normal for the most part, very filling although it's small. I also had some White Wine, delicious pairing with the food. Bread was complimentary, they gave maybe 2 pieces I believe. Water was respectively free. They had a restroom. The restaurant is like a hidden gem. Like the other reviews say, the five course tasting menu took hours. After 90 minutes we has been served two tiny courses and four glasses of wine so we were drunk and very hungry. I understand, slow food, I like to enjoy the evening, but when you show up at seven, and you are the last one in the dining room at 9:30, and the waiters are pulling table cloths, off the table and cleaning up so they can go home, I would rather leave as well. read more

We did the chef tasting and the food was absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend celebrating a special occasion here. The space is very intimate but it was cute. The server was very nice but she couldn't remember what each dish was or if she had served it to us yet. Just made the experience a little less special when she was leaning over our table to read off the tasting menu she posted on the mirror next to us and she even read one that was not what we were eating. But again, the food itself was amazing and the server was still nice, just some polishing would help make the experience feel more special. Came here to celebrate my partners birthday and we had such an amazing experience. From ambiance, to service, to the food, everything was perfect. We went with the 7 course tasting menu and every dish was delicious. It's looks like they have a seasonal menu and source their produce from local farmers. I'm usually not a fan of fish, but all the fish was cooked/flavored perfectly and each protein was paired with the best sides. The duck and pork were tender and juicy as well. Service was perfect from the moment we walked in the door, and were greeted by the owner. They knew we were celebrating our anniversary and they gave us special menus recognizing the occasion followed by a complimentary glass of sparkling rosé. We opted not to order the tasting menu because our appetites are smaller than they used to be. My husband had the scallops for an appetizer followed by the strip steak, and I had the cohia sashimi and then the duck breast. All were delicious and nicely presented. This place is exceptional! I love how the have the restaurant and the wine bar split up, yet the wine bar still sells the full dinner menu. I do prefer the cozy wine bar, as I do love the feel of a being in a wine cellar opposed to white tablecloth dining hall like a scene straight out of the movie Titanic. I had the seared scallops, truffle Mac n cheese, duck breast, and rack of lamb. The food was very good. My favorite was the duck breast, it was so savory. I like the added sweet potato puréed mashed and the sauce to balance the sweet! Brilliant. I think the scallops could of have more sear to it so it's more golden brown on both sides and could have added more sauce. That's just me being picky, as the least favorite out of the 4 dishes I had. I do appreciate the staff allowing to taste the wine before you buy your glass. I am a huge red wine drinker. I like more full bodied reds. I do highly recommend the Tempranillo- 2015 Marques de Murrieta. It was so delicious, I had to have 2 glasses. The icing on the cake was definitely the staff in the wine lounge. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and charismatic. This was my husband and I's second time to dine here (first was for my birthday and it was wonderful) - and this time it was a very mixed bag. We came here to celebrate our friend's birthday last night and it was a small group of six. Things started off strangely when asked around by our server what we would like to drink and I asked for an espresso martini. She said there isn't liquor offered here (which is fine), but then proceeded to berate me since I stated I have an allergy to chocolate and "espresso martinis have chocolate in them". I pointed out I never had chocolate served in any of the ones I had, and I would know because I would have dropped dead from my allergy if I did. She then lashed out at me (right in front of our whole group) that she "was a bartender for 17 years" and she would supposedly know. It was so awkward and unexpectedly snarky, such an odd thing to go off on a customer about, and our whole table was put off by it (and verifying on Google, no it is not traditional to add chocolate to a classic espresso martini, so not sure what that was about). The night proceeded on with good conversation and decent food, but service remained uncomfortable and off. There seemed to be a lot of confusion from our server that she needed several reminders on what everyone ordered multiple times - but the restaurant wasn't that crowded (it was a Wednesday night and less than half of tables in the restaurant were packed). My husband and I opted out of the tasting menus while the rest of the table went for it - my appetite wasn't there since we ate not that long before dinner and I was weirded out by the snarky exchange at the beginning of dinner. It seemed our server needed reminders who ordered the tasting menus with the paired drinks versus who didn't, and who ordered the 5 versus 7 courses. It just seemed odd to keep needing reminders when surely there have been instances before that other tables have done this, when the restaurant is actually crowded, and it was distracting from our experience as we tried to have conversation (we've done tasting menus at other restaurants before in which the serving of courses was seamless and not noticeable). Our friends reviewed their thoughts on the dishes they had, and most were good or okay, with the exception being the pork in one of their dishes which they said was pretty dry and bland. And the steak I ordered as my entree was chewy and not as melt in your mouth as I was hoping. At the end of our dinner, we asked to split the bill amongst us, and there seemed to be a misunderstanding how that would occur, which resulted in us waiting until 11:30pm (the restaurant closes at 10pm that night) because of initial charges that were incorrect. I think my table and I were pretty understanding and patient despite the really long wait, since we figured that working with a restaurant's system isn't as intuitive as you'd think. So I'd rate this experience with a 3.5/5 food, 2/5 service. Our overall experience this second time was very different from our first, which was perfection, and this was very much not. Perhaps don't rudely argue with a customer about their allergy in front of their table? Strange thing to go off on someone about and start off the dinner. And perhaps practice being able to keep track of parties ordering different options so they have a more seamless tasting menu experience rather than a distracting one. read more

I have been here twice, ordered from the menu first time and tasting menu the second time. Based on trying both, I would recommend ordering from the regular menu simply because for the price of the tasting menu ($70), you can get a regular entrée and 2 small plates(appetizers). The portions for the tasting menu were small in my opinion and even though it is a 5 course menu, the last one was a tiny cheese board with 2 bites for both of us. I understand that it is a tasting menu, but only 2 bites each wasn't satisfying. I was disappointed with the one scallop for one of tastings. I've had other tasting menus where portions were at least appetizer-size and quite filling. The 4 star review is for the food. Must try the sweetbreads and duck! That sauce with the sweetbreads, mmm...The Hamachi is good as well for an appetizer, refreshing! The hanger steak here is probably one of the better steaks I've tried. Service wise, the host was welcoming. Our server, however, made me feel uncomfortable with her expressionless face. I believe we got the same server both visits and she acted the same. There wasn't a smile on her face. When you arrive, the restaurant is to your right, their wine bar is to the left. The dining area is small, so it can get loud in there. Low key, easy to have conversation, all star food. The tasting menu is both well thought out and priced extremely well. First off, I will say based on service and ambiance I would give this place 5 stars. We went for an anniversary and felt the server was very attentive and even a personalized menu that said "happy anniversary" with our names. Unfortunately, the food left something to be desired. We went with the 5 course prix fixe and were left disappointed. For the first dish, the cobia sashimi was overwhelmingly fishy and was not complemented well by the beet garnish. The crab cake for the second course was a step up from the first dish but extremely small in size. Next came the duck breast, it came out barely warm and was tough to eat. The steak for the 4th course was barely edible, it had a burnt char taste and was completely undercooked to the point that it looked raw. The trio dessert I will admit was absolutely delicious but not quite enough to redeem the entire meal. If we came back it would be for dessert only, everything else we would probably skip. read more

We came here as a "reception" dinner for our courthouse wedding and from start to finish this place was great. We were able to bring our wedding cake (cutting fee of $2.50 i think) and special bottles of wine (from a family's winery in Italy) and champagne (gifted by family) for a corking fee of $20 each. That jumped this place to the top of our list. We came at 5 and were promptly greeted by staff, who seated us at the wine bar open next door. The restaurant opened at 5:30 and we were promptly seated at our table for 7. Since we had brought our own desert we decided to order everything a la carte. I got the venison, my husband got the quail, and my brother in law got the striped bass, along with some appetizers. Each of us were absolutely thrilled with our picks!! Don't hesitate! We were contemplating several restaurants to enjoy a family dinner with our adult daughter. I picked Wink, not realizing that my husband and I had already been there many years ago. This is a small restaurant that appears to be managed by the same family who owns it. Restaurant is located at the inner corner of an "L" shaped building, in what appears to be a small single story "strip center" next to a dry cleaner. We arrived at night and the restaurant sign was not readily visible as we entered the parking lot. Atmosphere was relaxed, waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, maitre d' greeted us outside as we were parking our car and politely led us to the main entrance (may have been a co-owner). Parking is a little tough. The 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings was excellent. It was somewhat pricey for a casual dinner unless you are a foodie and expecting a degustation - $100 per person for the 5 course tasting menu and $60 per person for the extra wine pairing. So, the final bill may be a little shocking. But, expect a delicious gourmet meal that will fill you, service with a smile, good wine, and a relaxed ambiance that actually allows you to hear everyone at your table. I was visiting Austin and wanted to try something I can't find at home. I looked at pictures of food for so many steakhouses and a few Italian restaurants but I landed on this. I was working late and missed my reservation but they were more than accommodating. I don't drink alcohol so I can't review the wine, but when they heard I don't drink they offered me non alcoholic wine. I just call it grape juice but what a nice thing to offer for people trying to get their life in order lol. The food.... You're getting a proper well thought out symphony of flavors. I had the skirt steak with mushrooms gnocchi and idk what but it was amazing. I then had the foie gras which was prepared as a dessert on a lavender cake. I've never had foie gras prepared as a sweet dish and I'm so thankful for the experience. Someone really went all out on the menu. Theres a proper chef here, an alchemist, if you will. For dessert I had the El rey I believe it's called. Chocolate cake chocolate syrup and cherries. Fantastic. These people really care about what they're serving, everyone there was passionate about it. It didn't feel corporate, it felt like these people love what they are doing. They had just finished a private dinner /tasting menu from what it sounded like and you can tell they put their heart and soul into it. I hope this place becomes a Hallmark for Austin, they deserve it. What a gem, it's so rare these days and I would pay double for the same experience at home. It's a hidden gem in the corner behind some earth bound place. Upon arriving, we had a grand tour from this guy that introduced himself at the podium. He asked whether we wanted to sit at the main restaurant or the bar area. The bar area had the restaurants menu on top of the bar menu, and THAT menu caught my eye more. We were seated in the bar building which was very nice, casual, but date-ish environment. --Mac n' Cheese w/ Black Truffle (10/5) One of the most amazing mac n' cheese I've had and to top it off they put shaved truffle pieces in here. It was an amazing appetizer dish. We definitely killed this. --Pei Mussels (4/5) The mussels itself lacked a little of of flavor because the sauce wasn't soaked into it. You can dip that side bread with the sauce, it kind of makes up for it. --Seared Foie Gras (5/5) Some places can't pull off foie gras the correct way. It was seared perfectly, the sweetness of the sauce paired well with the foie gras with some walnuts to add a touch of crunchiness to it. Very nice, delicate dish. --Beef Tartar (4/5) Some sweet jam at the bottom, topped with beef tartar, topped with bacon with a few pieces of arugula. This dish was okay. --Seared Duck (5/5) Surprisingly super tender, moist, and delicious! Has a sort of Asian dish I've had before, but this is made medium rare! Way better than what I've had in the past. Not gamy at all. --Hamachi Sashimi (5/5) Refreshing dish. The fish was fresh, the pear and cucumbers went hand in hand together. Presentation was amazing, I LOVED our server and the customer service was on point! Casual setting, perfect place for intimate date! I mentioned on my reservation that it was for my girlfriend's birthday (our first together) and when we got there they had a specially printed menu with "happy birthday [her name] printed on the top and at the end the entire staff had signed that menu and gave it to her to take home. My assumption about fancy restaurants like this is that the staff would be kinda snooty and I'd feel like a fish out of water. It was the exact opposite. You could tell that every person we interacted with cared about giving us a special dining experience. It was wonderful. And the food ... absolutely to die for. I'm far from a "foodie," but will generally try anything at least once. We got the five course tasting menu and each course was better than the next. Picked this spot after perusing Eater's article on Austin's fine dining scene. Three of my friends and I convene every year for a conference that galivants around the nation, and this year the conference was in Austin. Our small group started a tradition of kicking off the conference with a fine dining experience, to catch up and enjoy each other's company. I picked Wink based on the Eater article and of course, due to its adorable name. Our Lyft driver had a hard time finding this spot, which is in a super unassuming location in what looked like (in the dark) a rundown strip mall next to a dry cleaner. Interesting, but I knew well enough not to judge a book by its cover (especially since I've already read the reviews hehe). We went full in with the 7-course menu. While I honestly can't remember any of the individual dishes (hence the 4-star review), everything was solid and the service was delightful. We all walked away pleased with the experience. read more

We did the 7 course prix fixe with wine pairings and were not disappointed. We loved everything (including the sweetbreads!) and the meringue pot on the dessert plate stole the show at the very end.
