This restaurant really didn't do it for me. First of all, it's very hot and humid because they dont' have good AC. The kitchen is open so all the moisture and heat goes right into the restaurant. The employees are all sweaty and it's kinda gross. I was disappointed with the lunch menu. There were about 6-8 entree items and I wasn't thrilled with any of the options. I ended up going with the $8 hot dog, which came with slaw and homemade potato chips. The hot dog was tough and overcooked. It didn't have any toppings except a homemade sauce on the side. $8 for a hot dog that wasn't even large or thick??? My husband got the sloppy Joe type sandwich. It was good and all but it's expensive at $12. I realize they use fresh, quality ingredients but that's such an easy thing to make at home and after tax and tip, our bill was huge. Service wasn't great here either but wasn't horrible. Water glasses remained empty and the water we did have got warm so quick because it was hot and there was little ice. I was also disappointed they didn't have a drink menu. If you don't have traditional drinks (coke, etc.), you need to list what you do have. I could have possibly ordered something fun but didn't know what they offered so just went with water. The ambience has potential but eventually fails. There are plants on the wall and amazing fresh centerpieces from next door Tangletown Gardens. The space is so small, however, and it's super loud and cramped. The patio could be great on nice days but there isn't much of a view since it's off of a road. Overall, I was not impressed and do not intend to be back. read more

It's with great reservation that I can even give two stars to Wise Acre. Our server saved the review from receiving one star by effectively handling my complaint at the end of our meal. Here's my complaint: I ordered the burger medium well and specified no cheese. After waiting quite awhile, my burger arrived with cheese. When I called attention to the mistake, our server took the burger back, scraped off the cheese, and brought it back. (I could have done that.) The burger was under-cooked for my medium well request and had bits of cheese in every bite. And the fries were cold. As an aside, our salads arrived after we had finished eating our main meals and we never received requested refills on our drinks. On the plus side, the people I was with did enjoy their food. Clearly, their food arrived soon after it was cooked, unlike mine. We sat outside which has a cool vibe. And, as mentioned earlier, our server did us right by taking the burger, salads, and drinks off the bill. Based on her handling of the situation, I would give Wise Acre Eatery one more chance.... every restaurant can have an off day. But this was a very off day. read more

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but unfortunately, I cannot. I love the fact the have their own farm, use cloth towels in the bathroom, and decorate with reclaimed materials. However- their service and food were subpar. We walked in the open garage doors and sat at a table only to have a server kick us out. He said, although only two tables were occupied, we couldn't be seated yet and there was a list. He made us sit on the curb outside. Finally one of the other servers saw us milling around outside and sat us. She apologized...but still...I mean come on...if they didn't want to place our orders just yet we could have at least sat at a table and waited. As far as food goes, I had the black bean burger (the only vegetarian entree on the menu). It came with coleslaw and fries. The fries were cold and the burger wasn't nearly as tasty as I would have expected. The slaw was bland. I feel like I can make a better black bean burger for 1/10th the price. Dined at Wise Acre Eatery for brunch with my husband and mother in law. Our waiter was very informative and super friendly. He briefed us on what Wise Acre was about and where the food comes from. They don't have a huge menu but it was decent. I ordered the French Toast, which was average and different to my liking. My hubby and his mom both requested the CSA hash which they thought was delicious. The bacon was fantastic here at Wise Acre - happy pigs means happy food. The service here was VERY slow! Previously unimpressed. But that changed. The owners pulled through and made it right. The Easter brunch was just right. Not too much, not too little. If herb eggs were savory and not overcooked. I've eaten here a small number of times. The food fails to knock my socks off - oh it's good for what it is. I love the proximity of the farm in question to the table in question. The hot dogs are great, but not 8 dollars great with Tollefson's at the farmer's market for four bucks. But holy crap, do I love the custard. Whatever the flavor of the day is - get it. If you like your ice cream and associated indulgences to be slippery with cream, rich, arteries crying for mercy rich - this is actually NOT your thing. Sooo, this place just opened a couple weeks ago and I have already been there 3 times. Way back when, the building was occupied by auto mechanics, and still has the original garage doors today. The space is cramped, sit outside or at the bar if you can. Up until fall of 2010 it was Liberty Custard, and now appears to be bought up by Tangletown Gardens across the street. They still serve the custard, but now also offer entrees made with locally grown produce. The entrees I've had have all been amazing!! I want to try everything on the menu. They also offer local dairy products, eggs and produce at the front counter. The servers seem to be very experienced. The manager/owner is a super nice guy and I think he came over from the garden store. I love the concept of this restaurant and the food will blow your mind. read more

We ordered the grilled vegetables, mustard seed potatoes and the braised beef. For me, the all-star was the sugar snap peas that laid upon the braised beef which laid upon a carrot/potato/chive mash. The maple glaze on the beef really popped in the sugar snap peas more so than the beef, which made for a very fresh, crisp bite. I loved my visit to this place! The atmosphere is totally charming, and the eggs I ordered were delicious. I also really enjoyed that my coffee came with little brown sugar cubes. I'd never had those before, and they made a very tasty addition to my coffee. The staff was also extremely nice. I was waiting for a friend of mine to meet me there, and while I waited several different ladies greeted me, asked if they could get me anything, and made polite small talk with me. It also warms my heart to no end to know that the animal products they serve come from a small farm in Minnesota where the animals get to see the sun, smell fresh air, and have the experience of walking on grass! This place is legit. We came by for dinner while visiting from CA, I can honestly say it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The farm-to-table quality is the real deal. I got the stuffed pork chop, though the menu varies seasonally a bit it appears. Nice beer selection too. The staff was friendly, helpful, and passionate about the restaurant. Came here for the first time today. I will for sure be back. First things first... * a very friendly welcome right from the start. *Seated right away and brought our drinks within minutes. * Friendly staff with big smiles :) * ordered the roasted chicken salad with the dressing on the side. * Our food was brought out right away and it was DELICIOUS!!!!!! * The waitress forgot to put the dressing on the side which wasn't a huge deal at all. She was SUPER nice about it and brought us a bomb oatmeal chocolate chip cookie on the house. Those same cookies alone are a reason to go back. Everything else was a bonus. * Really REALLY good cold press coffee and fantastic service from start to finish. WILL BE BACK FOR SURE!!! To the waitress we had today, thank you so much for the cookie. It was really very sweet of you and sometimes it's just those little suggestions that really put a smile on a customers face. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. My friend and I had the host and server decide what we were going to eat without telling us until it was brought to the table. And everything was DELICIOUS. Service was great, all the smells in the restaurant were delightful from the coffee smell, to the different plates of food, to the bathroom. As crazy as it sounds, yes, the bathroom smell was so comforting. And most impressive is that over 75% of the food comes from a MN farm! Great restaurant! I came in for a business meeting right when Wise Acre opened on a Friday morning. It was not at all crowded. When I arrived, I notice how beautiful it is, inside and out, with lots of plants and an open, airy feeling. I got the CSA hash. I usually don't eat meat, but the tiny bit of local bacon was really good, and I loved the eggs and veggies. Everything tasted like itself, as it should. I didn't have enough room for the toast, but it looked good, too. The servers were present and attentive but not annoying. I would like to eat another time of day. read more

I've eaten here several times and really enjoy it. The menu is small, but what they do, they do well. Their food is locally sourced and very seasonal. Portions are probably on the smaller-than-average size, but that's really not a bad thing. The service has always been good - attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Favorites are the CSA scramble (plenty of great veggies and perfectly cooked eggs), and fries (to.die.for). Friends and i split a donut muffin as part of breakfast this morning and it was incredible! If you go for breakfast, arrive early. They fill up quickly and there are few places to comfortably wait in the wintertime. Decided on the spur of the moment to pop in for dinner on a Saturday night because we like to support restaurants that feature locally sourced ingredients. Next time I'd make a reservation as tables were booked, but we were offered a spot at the bar. It was fun to watch the bartender managing drink orders (wine and beer only) while we waited for our meal. I was pleased they had a gluten free bun option for the burger, which turned out to be ah-mazing, perfect char and great beef flavor. Plus the bun was a nice change from the usual dense gf offerings, more like a light and tasty biscuit. We enjoyed two generous sides--winter squash and potatoes in a delicious creamy sauce. It's a small space offering ambiance only cascading succulents can provide and great food from an enlightened kitchen. The Bacon and Brie Burger was absolutely fantastic. At about a centimeter thick, it was the biggest piece of bacon I've ever seen and the burger was grilled to perfection. Top it off with green tomato ketchup, some homemade pickles on the side, and one of their beers on tap (the Roselle when I went), and it was great meal. read more

I arrived earlier than my group during restaurant week and was lucky enough to meet Chef. Chef encouraged me to write a review on how it was and now I know where that confidence came from. I am not a vegetarian, but the predominantly veggie dishes were some of the most amazing I have ever had. The charcuterie plate was to die for and every dish was unique and made us take time to eat it so we savored the flavor. Thank you so much for changing the menu for RW at the last minute, because the meal was fantastic! I really like the concept that this restaurant is going for... locally sourced food right to you. I had a great salad there and my dinner partner had a burger. Both of us enjoyed our meals. I echo some of the sentiments of other posters. Wise Acres is selling an idea, and skimping on their service commitments... don't try that, it won't work out. I travel a lot to the Minneapolis area, and visited Wise Acre Eatery upon a suggestion from someone. This restaurant serves some of the best tasting, freshest, most creative "down home" cooking that you can get in the area. I've been here three times so far, and will not hesitate to go again. If there is any pork on the menu, then definitely try that out. The pork chop was the best I've ever eaten. Tonight I had their "eat like a hog" dish, which had three different cuts of pork (including sausage) and was off the charts good. I've also had their beef short ribs, which were very good, but a little fatty. Now a couple minor caveats. Be prepared for a wait for your food. They are a bit slow with service. If you go with friends and order an appetizer, it isn't too bad though. Price: for the good dinner entrees, you can plan to spend around $22 a $29 per plate, which may be on the high side for some people. Bottom-line is that the food is delicious and creative. Everyone that I've brought to this restaurant has loved it too. read more

Buying into the concept of Wise Acre is not hard to do. It works directly with a farm in Plato, MN, to source the food for the majority of the items on their menu. And, the food is good. The house salad that arrives with the burger is a true greens salad. The burgers are delicious, whether beef or black bean. However, there are a few factors that detract from decent food. 1. Long wait times. We arrived on a drizzly Monday at 12:37. When the hostess finally had a chance to get our names, there was a 20-25 minute wait. This was partially because they were no longer seating on the porch due to the rain. Can't imagine how long the wait might be on a weekend. 2. Waiting area. Just inside the door, there is a blackboard asking you to wait for a host to seat you. There are only five chairs for waiting guests. When everyone else squeezed in to stay out of the drizzle, the walkway was almost completely blocked. 3. Ambience. Some very cool things going on here. Plants growing on the walls. But, the cement walls and floor make this small restaurant even louder. By the time we finally got a table, I was already exhausted trying to hear and speak through the noise. Overall, the good food couldn't compensate for the other factors for me. If it had been no wait or if there was a wait but it wasn't so loud inside, maybe it would have been worth it to me. read more

Food is the most important factor in my reviews, and it is very heavily weighted. I ordered their Royal Brie and Bacon Burger. It must have been a triple-cream, because this was the softest, creamiest brie ever. All the wonderful flavors of brie without any of the funk or bitterness. Superb by itself. Along with this burger was a massive piece of meaty bacon that also tasted delicious. There was some kind of (maybe apricot) sauce for the burger, and this was worth singing about, too. Brioche bun. Let me tell you about buns: I normally hate them. They are so disappointing and they detract from the burger on a regular basis. Not this bun! It totally added to the experience. It was fresh, it was flavorful, it was soft and pillowy. For once, I didn't ditch the bun and considered it worthy of the meal. The meat was super-high quality. THEY ACTUALLY COOKED IT MEDIUM, as ordered! Holy cow! How many burgers does a girl have to try before they cook it right? It also came with delicious shoe-string fries. Our server was great. The atmosphere is warm. Service was a little slow, and our food took some time. When you have to wait, it usually means they are preparing things fresh. It's not fast-food. Sure, it could be faster. The space was cute, the coffee was delicious, the toast was blissfully not smothered in butter and the service was fine (as to another poster's complaint that they weren't sure what to do when they walked in, that has been remedied by a sign saying that the hostess will seat you). Not many options for vegetarians though and you can't substitute so though the scramble comes with bacon, if you don't eat meat you can't substitute fruit or a salad for the bacon. read more

Brought an out of town friend here this past weekend. And while the food was still great, I felt like the prices had gone up quite significantly. We split the special - 10 oz HUGE steak with fries, some squash and dipping sauce. Tasty and plenty to go around. My boy got the hog ragout - that was pretty nice and filled with a lot of good veggies as well. We stopped in for some frozen custard....and here is the hard part - because it was good, but.....it just wasn't as good as Liberty's. And I don't know if that is fair to Wise Acre. The wife and kids loved the new set-up, although my 5 year old missed the red card. It looks like the food is good, I think I will have to write a separate review for that, as to me it is really two places - a restaurant and a frozen custard stand. Enjoyed a great dinner here. The space is cute and definitely appropriate for the "farm-type" cuisine being served. The landscaping outside is welcoming and the restaurant and bar are very homey. Unfortunately, I am guessing because of the painted steel walls, the place is uncomfortably loud. I couldn't hear half of the specials because the noise was so overbearing. The food almost made me forget about the noise. I had the wild acre salad. it was basically grilled sausage and veggies on some greens with a raspberry ranch dressing. It was good, but very earthy and dilly. I was hoping the dressing would impress me more. I ordered brie and bacon burger. It was cooked perfectly for me. Well done, but still juicy. The fries with rhubarb ketchup were really tastey, and they had some kind of pickles on the dish which I really liked. They were more like a tangy cucumber, then a full out pickle (which was fine with me because I hate pickles) The frozen custard brownie sundae was the perfect ending. The brownie was chewy and delicious and the custard was rich and creamy. The service was a little ditzy, and probably needed a little more time to study the specials, but the service was good and we received our food promptly. read more

Went here for happy hour, and had a great time. My friend enjoyed a light and fruity Sauvignon blanc from WA, all beer and wine are $1 off. Happy hour menu had something for everyone. We ordered the pickle plate, fries (with beet style ketchup), soup of the day, and side salad. All were great and flavorful, except the pickle plate. Pickle plate didn't include any pickles (as we now were craving) instead was pickled veggies; cabbage, squash, kale, carrots and beans, neither of us enjoyed and this is the only reason the review is 4/5 v 5/5. My friend's salad that was supposed to Have a pickled egg and blue cheese had neither but did have some Inexplicable rhubarb!! When we inquired we were told the kale didn't make it in from the farm yet (Kowalskis has some) and the egg was brought out but no Blue cheese and no apology. The two of us dining each have 25 years living in TAngletown and support local businesses. But this crowd is cliquey and consistently does not put the customer first. Saturday Mornings are usually the toughest time to find a seat at a place that serves decent breakfasts, but we did it anyway. Stopped by at 11:00am and the place was full. The hostess said it would be about a 30 minute wait and decided to wait. The hostess brought my wife a cup of coffee and before she could finished it, we were seated. Awesome! The place is a converted auto service station with the garage doors still in place. We sat right next to one of them and looked over the menu. The waiter, Adam, was pretty good ( and hilarious), as he mentioned the special of the day a beet risotto w/sausage & fennel. My wife ordered that, and I got the CSA (Community-supported agriculture) Hash. They grow there own food and 80% of the items on the menu are from their farm. The hash was very good. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, the sauce was wonderful, and the eggs were good. The bacon / ham was a little weird. A big thick cut of fatty pork sitting on top of it all. The meat was actually pretty good. Pretty mild and not too "hammy" tasting. The toast came out without any butter or jam. You needed to ask for that. My wife's dish was very food with the beet risotto tasting wonderful. Overall the food was good, the atmosphere was really nice and the waiter was great. read more

The space is really fun (but crowded) and as everyone seems to be saying, the rhubarb ketchup is excellent. Sparkling soda is also a highlight. That said, I was underwhelmed by my experience here, particularly given the price premium. For example, the ham and pea fritters looked great (and massive) as a starter, but were a bit too oily. We ended up not dipping it in the aioli for that reason. I found the custard to be overly sweet on its own, even without the topping. But I was pretty impressed with the brittle. The place was full when we were there, seating is available on the patio but it was raining so that wasn't an option. I don't believe they have a full liquor license, I didn't see any spirits on their menu. They make up for it with some pretty fun sparkling wine options but if you are looking for a gin and tonic you probably wont be getting that here. The food was all very good but it was a little pricey for what you get, I would like if the portion sizes were a little larger or the cost was a little lower. It's not completely unreasonable but it's just enough off that it makes me a feel like I don't want to rush back or go when I am really hungry. read more

I'd have to try it again to say for sure, but seems like the cooks are coasting on the extremely high quality of their ingredients and kind of half-a**ing the preparation. The breakfast I got -- scrambled eggs, potatoes, cornbread and ham -- was pretty overdone. The ham was well beyond crispy and so overcooked it was dried out a bit. The potatoes were gorgeous fingerlings that had obviously been pre-roasted and then thrown in a deep fryer. That is the mark of a lazy kitchen, since it overcooks them and makes the outside crumbly and desiccated. Cornbread was weird, kinda mushy, but had good flavor. The eggs were perfect! Went on a Friday night with my sister and mom (came once before and HAD to bring them back) We had to wait about twenty minutes but the staff was incredibly friendly and were constantly updating us as to when we'd be seated. We weren't ravenous so we all decided to split a couple apps, an salad and an entrée. First to come were the Curry & Goat Cheese Fritters and the Chips-N-Dip. The fritters were phenomenal, the chips-n-dip, not so much. But I was placated as our Shades of Spring salad came quickly after and was delicious. I am very much an egg-y person and loved the pickled egg (which was also a staple on the Shades of Winter salad that understandably, but unfortunately, disappeared with the warming weather). For an entrée we settled on the Scottish Highland Beef of the day, which was Bangers and Beef Kabob with a Carrot Mash. It was awesome - I was only sorry I had to split it 3 ways! My only complaint is that they don't serve their burgers on Friday (or Saturday apparently) and I had promised myself a burger the last trip, a promise that will have to be fulfilled the next time I drop by. read more
