Dishes We've Had: - Beef with Bitter Melon (涼瓜炒牛肉): The bitterness of the bitter melon is presented straight-on. A well-executed standard interpretation. - Singapore Mei Fun (星洲炒米): Well-executed, but noodles are sometimes dry. The curry flavor is a bit light, but they use high-quality shrimp here. - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (魚香茄子): Pretty good. The restaurant uses additional ingredients, including wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and slices of red and green pepper. This dish also very strongly sauced. - Beef Chow Fun with Brown Sauce (豉椒濕炒牛河): Wo Kee has several chow ho fun (stir-fried flat noodle) dishes. Great neighborhood spot for authentic Chinese dishes in a casual setting. The peking pork chops are spot on, the twice cooked pork uses slices of fatty pork belly with leeks and black beans and the sauteed snow peas with garlic was fresh and cooked just right. It was our third time here and the food was consistently tasty and reasonably priced. Will need to try the roasted/bbq meats next time. They are still working out the kinks being so new, but they are off to a decent start. The customers are out there, so if they can smooth out the service and food issues, they should do well. As for the food, the dishes out of the kitchen are solid Cantonese straight out of Chinatown. Flavors and ingredients in the Singapore Chow Mai Fun and Sauteed Strings Beans have good wok hay. The Pan Fried Pork Dumplings are obviously homemade because each one made just a little different from the others. What's missing is consistent seasoning. The Cambodian Noodle Soup was super bland, but the wonton noodle soup was meaty & flavorful, but a little on the salty side. The roast meats are pretty good and definitely worthy of Chinatown rice shoppes. Go for the roast duck. After the last 2 restaurants at this location closed (Danté's Italian and Ly's Szechuan) plus 2 across the street (Fortuna and Elite Chefs) and Mian on Horace Harding gone, I was worried that nobody would dare open up in the area again. Stopped by for the 1st time last night to check out this new (one month old) noodle house. We ordered two steamed chicken dishes to go. The flavor is very subtle so you may nee to jazz it up with some hot (or some other) sauce. We placed a to-go order on a Saturday evening and even with the rain, the place was pretty full. As you will read in many other reviews, I'm hoping they do well and step up their game. It had just been one month since they opened when we went in so they are probably still working out some kinks. Hopefully, they'll take note of the reviews and rise to meet expectations. Since I didn't order anything else, I'm leaving room for improving my rating of 3 stars. I like Wo Kee. Back in the day we had Fortuna. It was the old stand by. Everyone in the hood went there. Wo Kee is a good years in the making replacement. I feel like a lot of people unfamiliar with Chinatown or Flushing have told me that the hanging fowl in the window scares them Such a shame because the food inside is great. Is it in the heart of Flushing quality? No. Is it good for our neighborhood quality? Yes. I always recommend the West Lake Beef soup. Their egg noodle soup with duck is belly warming. How can you go wrong with salt & pepper pork chops? The only thing I don't recommend is their dim sum. It just isn't that good. Go somewhere else for that. read more

I would say their rice orders and duck over rice prices are a bit on the high side compared to other restaurants. They have two separate dining rooms, but it seems they will only open the 2nd dining room only if necessary. Their dim sum is pretty basic, nothing special. They have 1 steam cart that has a variety of items. They also have their lunch and dinner menu available. On the down side, I have a feeling they use a lot of MSG in their food since I was constantly thirsty once I started to eat. As the Chinese diaspora spreads from Flushing, Fresh Meadows is ripe for authentic Chinese places to pop up. The prior restaurant in this space was a Szechuan place that fared poorly and is now replaced by a Cantonese noodle shop. The verdict? Pretty decent and an improvement over its predecessor. The menu is split between noodle dishes, Cantonese BBQ meat dishes, Cantonese restaurant fare and on weekends, dim sum. Country duck was good but unlike other places, was not served with the vinegar and chili dipping sauce (boo). Noodle soup dishes here are good and have large portions. The Cambodian noodle soup broth is flavorful and chock full of seafood. Peking pork chops were good but the meat was a bit bony. Most surprising dish was the beef noodle soup (Taiwanese inspired) which was both spicy and pungent, far better than what I expected and quite frankly what it looked like. The soup looked bland but was anything but. Beef was tender and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Service was standard for a Chinese restaurant but this place loses half a star since the back room where we sat still had the weird cumin/armpit smell that drove me crazy from the last restaurant that occupied the space. Their food reminds me of home. I'm Chinese and grew up in a traditional Chinese household. The food here is so good, it reminds me of my mom's cooking. It's not too oily, it's not too salty, their service is fairly quick and clean. Their restaurant has a seating bench to wait for your order, their tables and chairs are blocked off to prevent customers from staying. They have plastic walls covering the entire cash register area and leave a window to exchange food and money. They wear masks, there's a bottle of hand sanitizer next to the window they cut out. I especially like how they serve side dishes that are usually only served in large Chinese restaurants. They are delicious, the chicken feet, and their fish-egg soup is very good. It's honestly amazing how they're able to recreate that flavour that only comes out of large restaurants. How I love love love this neighborhood spot. If you dont live nearby, then I would say dont bother making the trek out here. Just go to flushing or chinatown (Manhattan or Brooklyn). However, if you live closeby then this is the best thing that has happened to this neighborhood in a freaking while. They make cantonese staples that we all know and love like Singaporean fried noodles, jook, and wonton noodles. They do a good job at pretty much all they do. I honestly cant complain very much. With clean bathrooms, English speaking staff, good food and local ease, you really cant go wrong. The weekend dim sum is very very pork heavy (coming from an Asian lady, that is saying something!) I was heartbroken when my favorite local Cantonese spot, Elite Chef (formerly known as Fortuna) closed. So when this place opened, we were excited. We were enticed by the roast meats hanging in the window. What made it even better is that it turns out that the former owner of Elite Chef owns this place. The menu is big and they also have dim sum on the weekends. Service can be a little brusque at times, but you don't come here for fine dining, you come here for delicious food. The roast meats are yummy, especially the roast pork and the roast duck. Their shrimp with mayonnaise sauce, snow pea leaves with garlic, and chicken congee are great. The shrimp comes with honey glazed walnuts that add an amazing crunch. The snow pea leaves are perfectly sauteed and the garlic flavor is just right. My son loves the chicken congee and there's enough to feed our family of 4. I can't wait to try the weekend dim sum. I hate writing bad reviews, but when a restaurant deserves it, other people should know. Some background: I know my Chinese food. My father was a chef in a Chinese restaurant. My wife's family is from HK. We grew up in Chinatown. Chinese food is what we eat regularly. I ordered congee and roast duck by phone for pick-up due to COVID. I was surprised to learn the congee is $9 a quart. That's about $3 more expensive than even the best places in Chinatown. But I figured restaurants were suffering and they had to increase their price. Plus, it might be some damn good congee. So, sure, let's give it a shot. When I got there, I looked at their menu and noticed $9 was their regular price for congee. Damn. It better be good. I brought it home and tried the fish congee. Wait. Did they screw up? Where's the flavor? This tastes like plain congee. There was fish in it (the fish is cheap white fish - likely swai or tilapia), but the fish gave it no flavor at all. Then I tried the preserved egg with pork congee, typically one of my favorite. It had flavor, but some extra odd flavor. My family all said it tasted strange and had to flush most of it down the toilet. Maybe it's because they chopped their eggs up on the same cutting board as their roast meats. Or maybe it's the odd pork slices that look like cold cuts that they pull out of a separate bag (yes, I watched them make the congee). It's just not the congee we were expecting. At least they can't screw up roast duck, right? You can if they cheat you on portions. We ordered half a duck, but in the box, all chopped up, it certainly looked like less than half a duck. So we ate it and realized no one ate any part of a wing. With half a duck, you're guaranteed one wing. So I spent about $75 on the meal when it should have costed closer to $45.
