I've been to Wrights probably 12 times. I have never had anything but exceptional service, food, and experience. Last week I came in with my friend and we had an excellent meal. I've had everything from shrimp scampi, my favorite, to the pasta, crabcake, halibut, wedge salad, Dauphinoise potatoes, salmon, roasted chicken, Sundae, wedding cake; and my other favorite the creme brûlée. I finally got a chance to go to this restaurant! If you're driving down Wydown at Hanley, you may miss it as I passed it about three times before I realized where it was. But once you get in there, it will be worth it! The ambiance is very comfortable, quaint and romantic....but totally single diner friendly (I took myself out)! . I wanted to try multiple things on the menu since I've heard so much about this place so I had the Wright Cola, which was awesome, I also had their take on the old fashion which had maple syrup. It may be sweet for some , but I found that squeezing the orange in it cut some of the sweetness and it was perfect! I ordered the New York strip, and wedding cake for dessert. The food was prepared Excellently! I especially liked the potatoes that were served with the New York strip. I have never tasted potatoes like this ever!! Although the New York strip was not the absolute best that I have ever had, it was pretty darn tasty. The wedding cake that I had for dessert was actually better the next morning when I ate it for breakfast lol. The waitress did tell me sometimes the cake taste better at home in a pair of sweatpants in front of the TV and she was right. The service from the time I walked in, was so attentive. Everyone was so nice I was shown to my seat immediately. And since I came by myself, I assumed I may have been forgotten as that has happened at other restaurants, but they did not here. The waitress gave excellent suggestions on drinks with the meals, was very knowledgeable about how they were prepared, and seem to really enjoy her job. Was SUPER excited to try this place out, with Louie being my favorite restaurant in St Louis. Reservations however were seemingly impossible to get at a decent hour, gone the moment the next month becomes available. My girlfriend got on a list that notified her when something came available however , and I was elated when she called letting me know of a reservation that became available at 7pm. The good: The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. I love the ambience. A dimly lit space with a warm glow from the lighting. The service was fantastic. Everyone was super attentive and friendly. The cocktails were wonderful, as was the food. The bad: the space is extremely small, and cramped. I never really felt able to relax. Tables packed closely together, and servers constantly at one of the two tables next to us, or our own. With the restaurant packed full (as you can expect it will be for the foreseeable future) it was very loud as well. All in all, I enjoyed Wrights tavern. I understand the hype of this place after visiting twice. I was able to snag reservations for two special occasions and enjoyed some awesome meals. It's a smaller spot with reservation only tables and a first come, first serve bar with 4 seats. I love the decor, which even extends to the bathroom. Don't miss it if you visit! Service the first time I came was exceptional. Our waiter was such a standout. He clearly had a passion for service and the food and beverage he served. Best service I've had in a long time! The second time we came, our waitress seemed very uninterested. Service was good in terms of taking care of our basic needs but zero friendliness or interest came through. It made a huge difference in the experience, though the food and drink was different each time. If i had her the first time i came, I would not have been as wowed. Worth the wait! It took me months to finally score a reservation that wasn't after 10pm. It's a very small venue with not a lot of seating. Perfect atmosphere for a date night! Although I brought my kids, I wouldn't recommend it. I have no idea why this place gets so many five-star reviews. Our experience was disappointing from start to finish. The food arrived cold, our steaks were cooked incorrectly, and the seating was uncomfortable - don't even ask about the chairs. For a restaurant that charges $50+ per plate and markets itself as upscale dining, it completely missed the mark. Service was slowish. Our waitress was polite but barely checked in. I ordered the tavern salad (essentially a Greek salad), but the ingredient proportions were way off. We both got the steak frites, which turned out to be mostly fries with a small steak topped with tavern butter. The steak was so cold the butter didn't even melt--seriously. No inquiry from staff to see if we enjoyed our meal which is saying something. She also suggested swapping one order of fries for onion rings--huge mistake. They were awful, think Buffalo Wild Wings but worse. The best part of the meal? The drinks and the fries. That's it. For the price, you'd be much better off at LongHorn or even Capital Grille. Passing through the St Louis area we ended up having dinner at Wright's Tavern. We called to get a reservation on a Monday night and they were booked but were told we could sit at the bar. When we arrived at about 8pm there were two seats at the four seat bar. The place was packed. It's not large to begin with. Sean was behind the bar and took care of us with manhattans and old fashioned then we ordered a dozen oysters. Excellent. I had their crab cake appetizer (it's one huge crab cake. Don't pass this up) and hubs had the filet. The seating isn't conducive to lingering and we did not. The most physically uncomfortable seating I've ever experienced but the food helps one to forget all that. Just don't plan on hanging out unless you're in a cushioned booth along the walls. The menu is simple, several steaks and seafood options. I enjoyed the sirloin on our visit. It was cooked to perfection and served with frites that are crave-worthy. We also started with oysters that had a freshness that is hard found in our land-locked city. I don't know what shines more at Wright's--the food or the service. The staff knows customer service and does an outstanding job of making your dining experience outstanding. A few other things to note about Wright's--the presentation of their martini's and ice cream sundae are Insta-worthy! Both are beautiful spectacles. Also, each table has a sheet of white paper on top of the table cloth and a cup full of perfectly sharpened Mitsubishi pencils. Doodle to your heart's desire. Reservations are scare. Set your alarm for the first of the month to get seats for the following month or use Resy's notify me function. The bar is first come, first serve but only seats four. We added our name to the Resy waiting list because they were booked out for weeks. We were notified of a 6:30 on a Thursday and booked it asap! The restaurant is very dark, but in a romantic way. It seemed a little loud at first but we didn't have any issues hearing each other. Overall ambiance is great for a date night! We started with the oysters and crab cake. Oysters were great, but we will be coming back for that crab cake! 10/10! We split the wedge and house bread with whipped butter. For our entrees, our waiter Ricky suggested the chicken and halibut and they did not disappoint! Chicken was a huge portion and very similar to the chicken dish at Louie. The halibut was my favorite dish of the night. The macaroni gratin was just as delicious as it sounds! We had to do the sundae for dessert! It was so fun and interactive. For the month of May, my wife and I, along with her cousin and husband (2 Cousins and their Husbands) make routine date nights every month. This month choice was the husband's choice and we choose Wright's Tavern. This destination is worth checking out for those of you who are looking for a place to cozy up with your spouse/mate. Make sure you make your reservation at least two weeks in advance because when i say they have been busy, that is an understatement. We got a Saturday 10:15 reservation but were thankful someone cancelled at the last minute so we got in around 8:30. When we approached Wright's Tavern that evening I walked right past the entrance, it was reminiscent of a speakeasy because I did not see any signs suggesting we had arrived. Upon entry the hostess was pleasant and quickly seated us. The music was nice, a mixture of lo-fi sounds with a few subtle blends of jazz blended hip hop, this definitely set the tone for the quaint restaurant. We started our evening off with appetizers and cocktails. We order crab cakes, and onion rings (although they are considered a side, many people choose them as an appetizer), they were delicious. The drinks were great, I especially enjoyed my Sazerac, and Old Fashion, both were mixed to perfection, while our wives enjoyed the Dark Daquiri, and the Pink Lady. For dinner, I choose the Halibut (a great choice I may add, and highly recommend) and my wife ate a wedge salad, she wasn't very hungry considering the appetizers were pretty generous. In true neighborhood tavern fashion, we walked into Wright's Tavern grabbing last minute bar seats (there are only 4 spots) and were happy to find that we had friends sitting next to us who got equally lucky! Exactly what you would expect a neighborhood tavern to be. As regulars at Louie, we thought we couldn't love Wright's as much. Thanks for showing us otherwise, Matt! We started with the crab cake, being a few dishes behind our friends who had just raved about them. Don't miss them - they are unlike any I have ever had. The best crab, with enough crunch to make it a "cake" but not overrun by breadcrumbs. Truly an outstanding dish. Sitting at the bar, we had the benefit of watching every specialty drink. I am already making plans for my next round at Wrights - the Pink Lady and the Espresso Martini, not necessarily in that order. Steak and Halibut were our choices. The steak was great, the delicately sliced, cheesy potato on the side was unlike anything I ever tasted. The Halibut?? My God, all Halibut should be prepared perfectly with homemade crunchy potatoes broiled on top. This will be a regular dish for me. We ordered a bottle of wine, because the list was amazing, and decided to try out a taste of a dessert...and out came the most magnificent ice cream sundae I've ever seen. I think this may have to be a birthday spot for my family for years to come. That's when the next month's reservations open up. The restaurant is cozy and inviting. It's in the old Il Fratellini location on Wydown. The restaurant is small, thus the reason for hard to get reservations. It's dark and delicious inside. Has a beautifully lit bar at the end. It's a stunning place. The service is excellent! This is the most attentive restaurant. The servers are very professional and nice. Cocktails are amazing! The food of course was the star. They give you lots of food. Steaks are very popular. Perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I had halibut and it was so good with a lemon beurre blanc and green beans. It was very good. The crispy potatoes on top.....parfait! I've had the pleasure of going to WT's twice now and it has not disappointed! This is a much needed addition to the STL food scene. The menu isnt complicated or pretentious--just food you would recognize, elevated beyond belief. It has to be one of my top restaurants in STL. The burger and french dip were both exceptional. Their sides are all delicious with large portions. The fries and onion rings were exceptional and don't hesitate to start with one of their fresh salads! Despite their large portions, try and save room for the dessert! Wedding Cake and a build your own sundae are two of my top recommendations! Wasnt sure what to expect here but it did not let us down. With only 20ish tables it is quite quaint. The old fashion was spot on with aged bourbon. The salad had a load of shredded cheese on top. I like cheese on my salad and this was the most I have ever seen. It is a large and very tasty salad. The main course was a nice size halibut filet on a bed of string beans and a cream sauce. Probably the best halibut I have ever had. For desert we ordered the crème brûlée- that was good, but the show stopper was the ice cream sundae. Three scoops with a whipped topping and hot chocolate syrup. I'm a hard sell on most things, and the St. Louis restaurant scene compared to my hometown of Nashville- is slightly lacking. First off, i fratellini that was located here before was my favorite St. Louis restaurant... So, naturally I had to give Wright's Tavern a shot. The ambiance and decor was great. I love the changes they made. The service as was with ifratellini, was remarkable. I ordered their martini (w/ vodka) and it was one of the best I have had. We had the shrimp and crab cake for an appetizer. Both were delicious. The shrimp were very large and the crab cake was the size of a pancake. Being born in Baltimore it is difficult to compete with Maryland Crab Cakes, but these were quite good. I also ordered the Bib salad and it was by far the best salad I have ever had. Very fresh and light. For the main course I order the bone-in ribeye with mashed potatoes, spinach, and onion rings to share. The steak was just okay. It could of used some salt and pepper. Very bland. Of the sides the onion rings were the best with everything else just being okay. The steak was served on top of a mustard jus which I didn't like. Honestly, the steak was the only disappointing part of the meal. I will come back to give it another try, but will probably order the wagyu burger instead. read more
