    Beef mala pot
    Tiffany P.

My boyfriend and I came back here after not visiting for a while, and I was surprised to see that the original owner had returned after reading some of the reviews. They now have a happy hour from 9-11 PM, which I really like since I tend to eat dinner pretty late. We ordered the beef house pot and the beef mala pot. I wouldn't recommend the regular house pot unless you're into creamy, milky broths! The broth tasted a little better after a while but I still did not like it. On the other hand, the mala broth is super popular here and my favorite! I usually go with level 3 or medium spicy and it's just the right amount of spice for me! I always replace the mala ingredients since I don't like intestines. I did notice the broth has changed and a lot less salty now. Personally, I kind of liked the saltiness of the old version, but that's just a preference for me. I love the sate sauce here! I wished they had bigger bowls, since I like to take out my meat and vermicelli to keep them from overcooking. Overall, even with the broth changes, the food is still pretty good, and I'd definitely come back especially for the 20% off during happy hour!

    Lamb Mala Pot level 5

I'm honestly so disappointed. Looking back, I should have left the moment they said they ran out of rice because everything just went downhill from there. For context, I hadn't eaten all day. I was starving, which means just about anything should have tasted amazing. Instead, this was one of the most frustrating meals I've had. It was still more than an hour before closing when the server told us they were out of rice, and the server suggested ramen so I ordered it, at an additional cost of course. The issue is that the ramen came uncooked, but there wasn't nearly enough broth to cook it. My pot was drying up so fast I had to pour in my drinking water just to keep things from burning. That completely watered everything down, to the point where my level 5 spice (the max level) wasn't even spicy anymore. The glass noodles were very chewy. My fire went out before I could finish cooking everything because the ramen took so long. To make things worse, I had no water for at last 15 minutes. I placed my empty cup at the edge of the table hoping someone would notice. I used to really love this place, but this experience left me so sad and disappointed. I left full, but completely unsatisfied. I don't think I can recommend this spot as my favorite hot pot anymore.

Portions are in the pot are definitely smaller, for nearly $25 a pot it's a getting tough When my pot came it was like nearly filled only half way.. They def are stingier because you can tell the exactly portion every single piece of tendon, tofu, intestines n tripe. AND there glass noodle portion is smaller. I've been here way too much, I know the difference.

Wuji Mala is back in its prime, and I couldn't be happier. If you've been around as long as I have (13+ years!), you remember when this place had two-hour wait times and for good reason. Now, with Chef George back in action, it feels like the soul of the place has returned. The Lamb Mala Pot #5? Still flawless. It's like he never left. Balanced heat, bold flavor, tender meat--pure nostalgia in a bowl. They've also given the interior a much-needed facelift. Gone are the hot colors--now it's neutral, sleek, and clean. The new floors and upgraded chairs definitely elevate the dining experience. It's got that refreshed energy while still honoring what made it special. Bonus: They now offer Happy Hour from 9-11 PM with 20% off. If I lived nearby, I'd probably be camped out in the corner every other night. If you've never tried Taiwanese hot pot, or you're looking for a hot pot spot that delivers consistently bold, unforgettable flavor--Wuji Mala is it. Don't sleep on this place. George didn't miss a beat, and neither should you.

    Beef mala, medium spicy

I think the food and service was alright. This is a pretty quaint spot with not much decor inside. The beef mala pot had a good, deep flavor but was overly salty. I got medium spicy but looking back, I could've gotten a higher spice level. When you come here, keep in mind that they only accept cash, Zelle, or Paypal and when you pay with PayPal, there's usually a fee because you're paying a business. I recommend just bringing enough cash. Overall, this place was alright food, service, and ambiance wise. It was an okay meal but I don't think I'll come back again.

Wu Ji Mala Hotpot holds so many memories for me . I've been coming here since my teenage years, and the flavors are still just as amazing as ever. The beef tendon and tripe are outstanding ,tender, flavorful, and absolutely unforgettable.

The newly upgraded space is bright, comfortable, and inviting. After hearing that the original owner has resumed management, I couldn't wait to give it another try. We arrived right at the first dinner seating at 6 PM on a particularly hot day-but thanks to the air-conditioning, it was perfectly comfortable. I ordered the 0.5 spicy mala beef broth, and my mom had the non-spicy creamy broth with lamb. The mala broth was just as it should be-rich, flavorful, and full of that signature taste I've missed so much. It truly brought back the original, delicious experience. We left completely stuffed and satisfied. I'm so happy this place is back to its old glory, and we'll definitely be returning for more hot pot soon!

Wuji Mala Hotpot is seriously so good. The owner is incredibly kind and generous--it feels like you're being welcomed into someone's home. The food is top quality: bouncy glass noodles, super tender beef, tofu soaked with flavor, soft tempura, sweet shrimp, and fresh, crunchy veggies. And the mala broth? Amazing. I recommend getting it on the side so you can control the spice level. The place is newly renovated and looks great. I was treated to this meal because my student is the owner's grandchild, but this review is totally genuine.

To-go quality Is the to-go quality the same as dine in? How about the portion size and any limitations on level of spiciness? Thanks

Quality will be the same as dine in but the spiciness level is only from .5 to 1.5. I do feel like they give you more soup for to go but otherwise, generally the same in everything else.

PARKING: decent parking, it's around other places so it is in a lot but if it is a busy time it would be pretty hard to try and get a space. PLACE: fairly big, but not too big, would have to combine a few chairs and tables to accommodate to bigger parties, the sauces and everything are already on the table, so are the dishes as well. FOOD: We got the ultra, Tom Yum Tonkotsu & Shiro Miso Soymilk - Tom Yum tasted really good and it paired well with the meat, the Shiro Miso just tasted more like miso soup than actual soy milk mixed in. American Wagyu & Black Angus Beef Toro - I feel like the American Wagyu was a little too fatty for my liking, or it could be the other way around lol, I kind of don't remember which one was which but one had amazing marbling that melted in your mouth. We also got lychee beer, which was super good, didn't even taste like beer. We had like 3 glasses which is funny because we aren't drinkers but it was so delicious. I recommend any of their fruity beers. Edamame - don't really recommend, comes cold and some pieces were not really good.

We came in with a party of six for dinner on a Monday evening when the restaurant was relatively quiet, with only a few other tables occupied. We asked if it would be possible to combine tables so our group could order multiple broths and enjoy the meal together because sharing one pot for a party of 6 gets a little crowded, but the request was denied despite there appearing to be plenty of available space. As the meal progressed, our broth became extremely cloudy and thick from cooking. We politely asked if we could receive a fresh pot of the same broth--not a different broth, just a new pot so we could continue enjoying our meal. Unfortunately, this request was also denied. The broth flavoring was also underwhelming and started to taste the same after our first refill. What made the experience disappointing was the lack of flexibility and willingness to accommodate reasonable requests, especially during a slow service period. Customer service and hospitality are an important part of the dining experience, and we left feeling that our concerns were dismissed rather than addressed.

There was a bit of a wait and you can waitlist on their ipad inside. We waited for about 20-30 minutes.    Before getting seated they ask if you want to do the normal hot pot style or AYCE. The AYCE runs for 90 minutes and is $24.99 during lunch and $30.95 during dinner time. They also charge for leftover food which is $6 per lb. We ended up doing the normal one pot hot pot for each person.    I always get my usual lamb hot pot which already comes with vermicelli noodles and choose rice as my free side dish. There are various levels of spiciness and I chose extra spicy which is a level down from there flaming spicy from what I can recall. Honestly it was not spicy enough but I did not want to get the spiciest level in fear that it would be too oily. Perhaps I will try that the next time to see if it is.    They have a bar further in the back of the restaurant where you can get creat your sauce and get some garnishes for your hot pot. I also noticed they have some other sides like noodles and such next to it. It seems if you are not participating in AYCE you can still get sauces and garnishes but I am not sure about the other sides.    The interior has changed from the last time I came here and it looks nice! Service was standard and everyone was nice. It does feel more chaotic now that they have AYCE but that  is understandable.

Something about the smell of the broth made me think it wasn't just my personal preference for food that made me not like it, it was an actual musty-ness and chlorine smell. I'm thinking maybe the broth was old and reheated? Or maybe it's been boiling all day and they just added some water to it? It's really hard to describe, but I'll just say I've had a lot of different hotpot like Japanese shabu and haidilao and boiling point and really liked it, and I also really like Korean soups, but I've never had this weird musty funky smell. To be honest I couldn't continue eating after trying to sip the broth 4 times--and I tried 4 different flavors of broth. Even the miso broth, which usually just taste like miso and water with a bit of onion, had this weird funky smell, and all the broths had a similar weird undertone. There were some other hygiene issues. I noticed that the surface of the dishes had some smudges such as the picture I provided where the hotpot bowl has some dried rice stuck to it, the dried rice was there before it came to our table. It seemed like maybe they were hand washing the dishes or not doing a thorough job. Usually restaurants like this need some kind of high heat industrial washer, and maybe they aren't using that? I noticed the surface of my spoon just had a funky detergent smell similar to the broth. The sauce bar was mostly okay, however there was a really tacky looking setup where there was some soy sauce and other sauces in 1 gallon glass drink dispensers, I think the sauce was coming out too fast which caused it to look all splattered in sauce and not very cleanly looking. Also the sauce dishes were being held in a plastic dish tub which looked a bit unclean. I also noticed something going on at the entrance of the kitchen. One of the workers installed a heavy duty fan to blow air out of the kitchen and into the restaurant. I don't know why this would need to be done. If you need to dry something you usually use a mop or a squigee. So maybe it was some funky smell in the kitchen? What caused that smell? It could also be that they were going to close soon and this is just their normal end of day procedure, but there were still a lot of people eating, so why would they blow smelly air into the restaurant while people are eating?

Sure, the ribeye is a 'better' cut but its actually not as good for Shabu since the thin slices negates the need for the ribeye to be a tender cut.
