Absolutely. That makes the review much stronger because it explains whether the $98 duck was actually worth ordering and which dishes stood out. Came to Xibei in Arcadia with a bunch of friends on a Thursday night, and this place honestly exceeded my expectations. I made a reservation ahead of time and also reserved a whole Peking duck, which is $98. Xibei is located right next to Haidilao Hot Pot, but once you step inside, the restaurant has a completely different feel. The interior is beautiful, modern, and upscale with a fine dining vibe. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted and shown to our table, and the service throughout the night was phenomenal. The staff were attentive, professional, and matched the higher-end atmosphere of the restaurant. For dinner, we decided to order the $118 combo, which ended up being a great deal. It came with stir-fried broccoli, sweet and sour ribs, stir-fried peppered beef, steamed shrimp with garlic and vermicelli, and the Millet Sticky Rice dessert with floral honey syrup. I honestly think the combo alone could easily feed 4 to 6 people, especially if you're planning to order a few additional dishes. We definitely ordered with our eyes because on top of the combo and Peking duck, we added the dry pot cauliflower with pork, braised pork belly, eggplant with garlic sauce, and ma la chicken. Needless to say, we ended up with a lot of leftovers. All of the dishes were exceptional, but the dry pot cauliflower with pork was one of the biggest surprises of the night. It was so flavorful that it actually made the stir-fried broccoli seem a little boring in comparison. Our least favorite dishes were probably the ma la chicken and stir-fried broccoli, but honestly, they weren't bad at all. The other dishes were just that much better. Of course, the main event was the whole Peking duck. The duck took a while to come out and arrived about 45 minutes after we had already started eating our first entree. By then, we had already eaten so much that we were getting full. If you're ordering the duck, definitely pace yourself and save some room. Once it arrived, though, it was worth the wait. I've had Peking duck at Ji Rong before, and I personally thought Xibei's was better. The skin had a great crispiness, while the duck meat underneath stayed moist and wasn't dry. I also really liked the thinner wraps because they didn't overpower the duck and allowed you to taste more of the meat and crispy skin with each bite. At $98 for a whole duck, it's definitely a splurge, but it's meant to be shared and I thought the quality delivered. If Peking duck is one of the main reasons you're coming, I would recommend reserving one ahead of time. The ambiance was another highlight. The high-end modern decor makes this place feel nice enough for a date night, birthday, celebration, or business dinner, while still being comfortable for a large group of friends sharing dishes family style. Parking was also surprisingly easy for Arcadia. There's free parking in the main lot as well as underground parking. Overall, Xibei was a great experience from the food to the phenomenal service and beautiful ambiance. My biggest advice is don't order with your eyes like we did! The $118 combo can easily feed 4 to 6 people, and if you're adding the whole Peking duck, you really don't need to go crazy ordering additional dishes. The Peking duck alone gives me a reason to come back. Crispy skin, moist duck, thin wraps, and personally better than Ji Rong for me. Didn't realize this place got review bombarded to hell, with random no -friend-one or two review reviewers; I imagine to prop up their standing and algorithm. I've dined here on 3 occasions so far. The first time, on the word from someone really dear to my heart, who claimed this place had the best Peking duck in southern California. Quite a claim! Too bad we couldn't get it when I met up with her, since the place started getting popular. Since then, I've had the lobster set menu and the Peking duck set menu (which you should put in a pre-order, 2 days ahead of time per the staff's recommendation). One, my five-star rating isn't based on this place having the "best" food. But more that they have a unique northern/northwest provincial Chinese menu with items that you won't find at a place like Panda Inn or your local Cantonese seafood/dim sum spot. Things like Mongolian beef, fish head in pumpkin sauce, honeycomb oat noodles, etc. Even though I don't even like Chinese-style lobster, where they chop the thing up into pieces, shell-on, and wok stir fry (too much work to eat and separate from shell, for me personally) the flavors are pretty good for what it is. And I do love the garlic glass vermicelli noodles that have been percolating its flavors as a bed for the lobster to rest on. As for the Peking duck, I would say from my experience, it's in the top 3 that you can get in LA. The duck skin especially has the signature "cui" texture, that characteristic crispy crunch of satisfying mouthfeel and permeation of its rich savory flavor. Even ordering 2 days ahead, and arriving on time, it took about 45 minutes for the duck to finally be served; long after every other dish in the set, including dessert, had arrived. So it is a wait, upon a wait. But one of my clients, who invited me to dine with, loved the Peking duck so much, she insisted on meeting the chef in charge. One man, solely responsible, 30+ years experience preparing Peking duck. She personally tipped him $100 cash, she never enjoyed a duck dish so much. On another note, XiBei's version of Sichuan/Szechwan dishes or even Chongqing ma-la dishes are interestingly mild. So far, I've had their peppered beef, and spicy chicken. The numbing-tingling sensation meanders on the palate, while the spiciness is quite muted, as if to be accessible to those who are pain-averse. I wouldn't say it's bad, the dishes are still delicious; it just caught me off guard. As for the accompanied set dishes that come with the lobster or duck... the salad is light and refreshing. The pork spare ribs are okay... seasoned and a bit tough/chewy. I could do without it. The steamed shrimp is a decent dish. The dessert of glutinous millet with osmanthus syrup works - it's a lighter flavor to balance and end the meal. Mongolian beef, I actually quite like. It has a satisfying aroma from how it's seasoned. Teas offered, from JuHua/Chrystanthemum, oolong, and white tea with tangerine peel are all quite nice. Real tea. Overall, I'd still come back to try the rest of their menu. It might be a deal to buy pre-set menus, but I think it's better to order individual dishes for quality and taste. As service goes, I usually expect Chinese restaurant service to be bad. Or poor. Surprisingly, I think it's pretty decent in XiBei. Every table has a tablet for you to scroll a menu and order. The staff actually put in some effort to help, even if not all of them can speak English. Mandarin is the usual default language. Decor is open, modern contemporary. My father is visiting from Asia and was celebrating their anniversary! We saw that XiBei finally opened here at the Santa Anita Mall and we were all so excited to try. Between the four of us, we shared seven dishes - Jellyfish Salad, 1/2 Peiking Duck, Mapo Tofu, KungPao Shrimp, Green Beans, Cold Noodles, and Grilled Eggplant. Everything was delicious, and I do have to say that the food was quite authentic. I did take away 2 stars because the service was mixed. We had made a reservation for 4 PM and received a phone call at 1 PM asking us to come earlier - I've honestly never encountered this situation before / it kind of defeats the purpose of making a reservation. When arriving, we did have two male servers who were AMAZING and tentative. Another note on service - when we ordered the 1/2 duck, there were not enough condiments and sides (hoisin sauce, cucumbers, onions, wraps). My father asked if we could have an additional set, and the female server rudely explained that we would have to pay for an additional set. We have 0 problem paying for an extra set; however, the tone of the response was unsettling. It started with a light salad with soy-ginger dressing, then they brought out the spicy, fatty beef slices, Shanghai short ribs, garlic-sautéed broccoli, garlic shrimp vermicelli, and sticky-rice dessert. First time here and my dad had to call to reserve a seating and duck. The largest table they offer was for a party of 6, so we had to split into two tables of 8 because my mom wanted to order two separate combo sets. We can also order à la carte dishes on their iPads but we ordered combo meat sets. We got short rib combo and duck combo, one for each table. The combo came with a salad, soup, pork short ribs, garlic shrimp with vermicelli, kungpao chicken, broccoli, and the meat of your choice. Dessert was sticky rice with some sweet dipping sauce that only my dad liked. Rice must be ordered separately or we had to ask for bowls of rice. Salad had a nice tangy and sweet vinaigrette, mostly iceberg lettuce and various other vegetables. Soup was very mild and flavorful, it had tofu, Napa, mushrooms, and small shrimp. Broccoli was good, still had a crunch/bite with firmness and savory sauce. Garlic shrimp was strong with garlic but coupled with vermicelli balanced it well. Kung Pao chicken was sweet and slightly spicy, I ate the most of this dish as it was delicious. Short rib was great, very delicious, not the most tender short ribs, but was still great. I didn't try the dessert as i wanted to focus more on savory dishes. The only downside was the wait time for duck, we already finished our side of the combo while the other table was waiting. By the time it came out, they were pretty much done, so we ended up taking the rest home. Overall, a nice dinner for a small group of close friends or family. The set with the duck is the most popular but they run out so order in advance if you want it. I couldn't order the duck so I opted for the set that featured beef instead. FOOD All of the dishes that were a part of the set were good. The value is good too. The set cost less than $100 and it was enough for four. RESTAURANT The inside looks pretty nice. A few of the tables on the side have the picnic table cloth that people have been mentioning. Apparently, all of the tables used to have this type of table cloth. Now, the only tables that have them are off to the side and aren't for customers to use. I thought it was funny when I saw these. SERVICE Staff were good here on my visit. Came here on a Sunday afternoon ~2pm without reservation. We had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated at a table, which was not bad. Once at the table, you place your order on a tablet. XiBei serves Northwestern Chinese cuisine. The ambiance is casual, but the aesthetics of the place was a bit weird with Chinese banners hanging from the ceiling and picnic table cloths that didn't match anything. We ordered the Beef Rib Value Set ($98), which comes with... 1. Xiebei Signature Salad (3.5/5) - the salad wasn't very fresh, but the dressing was light and vinegary 2. Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs (5/5) - the pork was tender and came off the bone easily. It is also marinated well in their sweet and sour sauce, which had a good balance of savoriness and honey-like sweetness 3. Mongolian Sliced Angus Beef Rib (5/5) - of all the dishes, this was probably my favorite. The beef was tender and smoky in flavor. I loved the cumin spice seasoning that you dip the beef it as it complimented the smokey flavor well 4. Scallion Grilled Whole Sea Bass (2.5/5) - the sea bass was very fishy and tasted like farm-raised fish. It was cooked well though as it was tender on the inside and super crispy on the outside. The chili pepper seasoning it was served with was good 5. Kung Pao Chicken (2/5) This has to got to be one of the worst Kung pao chicken we've ever had. Stir-Fried Green Beans (2/5) The green beans were cooked well, but like the other vegetable dishes, this one also lacked any flavor or proper seasoning. 7. XiBei Signature Golden Millet Sticky Rice (4/5) - the sticky rice with millet was quite sticky, but the golden millets had a pleasant millet flavor. The majority of taste comes from the sweet osmanthus dipping sauce. ------------- Additional Items that we ordered ... 1. Beef & Onion Dumplings (4/5) These dumplings were huge. The dumpling skin was not good - too thin and easily ripped apart. The meat filling inside also fell apart too easily due to the large amount of onions mixed into the meat. The flavor was decent though - beefy and garlicky. 2. Stir-Fried Broccoli (2/5): The broccoli itself was fresh and steamed to perfection, but it lacked any flavor. We ordered the garlic option and there was no garlic or garlic fragrance whatsoever. 3. Dry Pot Cauliflower with Pork (3/5): There was nothing special about this dish that tantalized our taste buds. The cauliflower was cooked well, but lacked flavor as it did not pick-up the savory sauce that it's served in. The pork in the dish was good though as it was able to absorb the sauce. 4. Mongolian Cheese Bing Bread (5/5) Pleasantly doughy, chewy and cheesy 5. Oat "WoWo" Honeycomb shaped oat noodles with sweet & sour sauce (2/5) Sadly, they did not make this dish right. It is supposed to be easy to tear apart each honeycomb noodle so that you can dip it in the sauce, but their version is all stuck together. Instead of dipping the honeycomb noodle in the sauce, they douse the sauce over the honeycomb noodles. The sauce itself was not good - it literally just tasted like sweet and sour spaghetti sauce when it should really have a good spice fragrance to it. 6. Xibei Style Lamb Shumai (3.5/5) A unique dish where they turn traditional shumai, which usually contains pork into one that contains lamb meat. The shumai skin was doughy and thin, which was nice because it doesn't make you feel full quickly, but the lamb meat was very gamey 7. Northern Style Pork Bun (3/5) The Rou Ja Mou bun was not flaky and lacked that fragrant doughiness. The pork was ok, but the sauce it 's marinated in was too sweet. 8. Housemade Yogurt with Osmanthus Fermented Rice Soup (5/5) Beijing-style yogurt, which is tangy and not as thick as Greek Yogurt. I came for a birthday dinner with my family, and I have mixed feelings. First off, the food is very good, but it's not great. Considering the prices here, I expect to be fully wowed. Instead, I felt like the food was just good and the portion sizes were a little too small to justify the cost. The combo sets can be more cost-efficient, but even then, I don't think it's enough for 6 or more people. Maybe stick to the combo sets if you only have 4-5 people. The service and ambiance were also just okay as well. We were seated on the right side of the restaurant, seemingly apart from everyone else, and it was a weird vibe. The waiters also brought out our dishes in the wrong order, like dessert came before the entrees and duck, so it was kind of confusing. I've been wanting to try this place for a while after seeing tons of ads on it on Instagram. Overall, the experience was pretty good, though it did start off a bit awkward. One older server was fairly rude, and with limited English, the interaction was confusing, he insisted we needed to be members to order, which turned out not to be true. Aside from that and some very mid-level service, the food itself was excellent. What I tried: Shredded Chicken Oat Noodles - Hearty and delicious. Simple, clean flavors done well. I really enjoyed this dish. (4.5/5) Mongolian Beef Rib-Bone Platter - The true winner of the night. Fall-off-the-bone tender, incredibly flavorful. Easily the best bone-in beef I've had. (5/5) Stir-Fried Vegetables - A bit pricey at $18, but it tasted good. My mother-in-law thought it was slightly salty, but I personally liked it. We were told that a private room reservation requires a minimum $300 spend. The set menu is easy for a group, so we chose the duck one that says feeds 4-6 people. My partner wanted to treat his brother to a nice birthday meal. We gathered both families and a close family friend to lunch. We didn't realize, until we got there, they don't have duck for lunch. The meal came with millet cake with osmanthus winter melon dip, sweet n sour pork ribs, chicken broth with tofu, signature salad, Mongolian sliced beef rib, scallion grilled sea bass, kung pao chicken, and green beans. Sweet n sour pork ribs - delicious. Just enough sweet n sour flavors. Little bites though. Green beans - crispy and not overly flavored. Great dish. Scallion grilled sea bass - luckily, a little spicy with the spices on top. Just spicy enough for my taste. Fish also didn't have a lot of bones which is a relief for my partner Kung pao chicken - well seasoned and had crunchy peanuts that really paired well Mongolian sliced beef - tender and juicy but the pickled vegetables looked random to me Millet cake - was just sweet enough. Nice palette cleanser but they served this before the beef. Timing was off. I did not get a chance to try the salad and the tofu soup. They were busily eaten by other people at the table. Also ordered the sour fish soup - delicious but a bit spicy. I wish it wasn't spicy and my younger son didn't like it even though he likes pickles and fish. Too spicy for him. The decor inside is a mix of the old restaurant which was high end expensive Chinese food to this new restaurant which looks like picnic tables with red and white checker tablecloths. We got the value set A which was xibei signature salad, chicken broth with tofu, mongolian beef rib bone platter and tagine braised noodles. The salad was tasty and the dressing was great but it was totally not what I expected. Yes its name said salad but it totally threw me off to be served something like this in a Chinese restaurant. The chicken broth was tasty and had a lot of pepper in it but that was the only dish we liked. The Mongolian beef rib was dry and flavorless unless you dip it in the seasoning provided. The tagine braised noodles was bland and had no flavor. I'm never one for wasting food but this is one place we left everything we didn't eat behind. I first discovered this spot last November after a long shopping day. We only wanted some snacks for our drive home, but the host was so kind that she invited us and my dog inside to escape the wind. I promised the host I would return, and I finally did this past Sunday with my family. The service remains the strongest point of this restaurant. The same lady welcomed us back and the entire staff was incredibly attentive. The servers clear plates quickly and always greeted us with a genuine smile. It is the kind of place where you feel truly cared for. Regarding the food, I have had my fair share of Chinese cuisine and found the dishes here to be fairly average. Nothing particularly stood out to me as a reason to return for the taste alone, but the excellent service still makes it a solid choice for hosting elders or colleagues. Located in the Santa Anita Mall, my husband and is decided to try this place out. We arrived around 1:00pm on the weekend and was told Peking duck was out for the day. I would call in advance to see if they still have supply. The interior design is interested it reminded me of fine dining mixed with Texan BBQ vibes. We ordered the sizzling cumin beef and two oat yuyu (tomato and mushroom soup). Our wait for the food wasn't too long. The cumin beef was flavorful and perfect amount of cumin. Not too overwhelming and the beef was tender. Oat yuyu was interesting, the soup broth for the tomato was perfect. Not too tart or sweet, perfect balance it reminds me of the hot pot soup base. This was my first time trying oat noodles and I really enjoyed it. If you're looking for an al dente texture this is not the dish for you. Overall, can't wait to come back with friends to try their combo meals. read more

When Meizhou Dongpo (眉州東坡) closed and was replaced by Xibei, I was surprised as Meizhou Dongpo served one of the better Peking ducks in the area, I mean real Peking duck with crispy skin, not the Southern China style roasted duck. During Xibei's early days, it felt like they were still trying to find their footing. Operating in such a prime location at the Arcadia Santa Anita Mall is no small expense, and their original Northwestern Chinese menu is largely noodle focused had its limitations. There were also complaints about some dishes feeling pre-made, which likely didn't help attract a wider customer base. Recently, however, Xibei added Peking duck to the value menu set, and I believe they are using the same cooking equipment and/or at least a very similar recipe to what Meizhou Dongpo used. The result is impressive. Even better, the duck value menu set is offered at a very competitive price, which seems to have significantly boosted their business. I also noticed they are shifting their focus toward English speaking customers, and I truly hope they succeed (but please while keep prices in the same range). Now, back to the food. The Peking duck is great! Crispy skin, juicy meat, and full duck flavor. Along with the usual accompaniment like green onion, cucumber, thin pancakes, and sauce, they also include sugar powder and yogurt sauce. While those are not my personal favorites, they do add an interesting twist to the dish. Among the other value menu items, the lamb soup stood out the most. The lamb is cooked perfectly, and the white radish slices are incredibly tender, with a naturally sweet and clean lamb meat and bone flavor. For me, the duck and lamb soup are the true main courses, and the remaining items are more on the mediocre side, but still nice as extras. The kids' menu is another highlight. One kids' meal (we ordered the beef rib) easily fed two toddlers. It came with rice, steamed egg, vegetables, and fruit at a very reasonable price. We also tried the OAT "WOWO" noodles, a well known Northwestern Chinese dish. The honeycomb shaped noodles have a great texture, and it's definitely worth ordering if you still have room. Overall, I will definitely be back for the Peking duck value menu, and I hope Xibei continues building on what they are doing right. read more

Came here for lunch this past Saturday. Walked right in with no need for reservation. Sat at a very large round table even though only 2 of us. We ordered their set meal "beef ribs", as they did not have any roast duck meals for us. Apparently you need to order duck the day before arrival so they will have your duck ready upon arrival. We had no clue so could not enjoy duck during our visit. Instead we had the beef rib combo meal at $118. It was so much food for just 2 people so we had to pack up and take home. Our meal came with: - garlic shrimp with vermicelli noodles - steamed broccoli - Kung pao chicken - large plate of sliced beef ribs with cumin rub and pickles veggies - salt & vinegar spare ribs - 3 bowls of rice (this is separate from the combo meal) - tofu veggie soup - millet mochi squares for dessert Everything tasted great and we were stuffed! Very great service and organized! The food is served very fast and on very nice plates. The environment is very nice and it has very good decor. It is not too loud and great place to eat. Their restroom is also very clean and modern. However, prices are high and the portions are on the smaller side. The duck is pretty good though with the wrap. The beef rib was alright but the flavor was pretty good. Got the passionfruit green tea and it was good, tea is refreshing with a subtle passionfruit taste and not too sweet. read more

The $98 set comes with seven dishes, and honestly, three of them are real highlights. The spread includes: Chinese mixed salad, sweet & sour ribs, pickled fish, dry-fried green beans, Peking duck, hand-pulled lamb, and millet cake. The hand-pulled lamb was excellent -- made with New Zealand lamb, super tender, not gamey at all, and even better dipped in the sauce. The Peking duck was also really good. Having this dish on the table made the whole meal feel like a proper family-style feast . The pancakes were very thin, the duck meat was nicely roasted, and the skin was crispy. Dipping the duck skin in sugar was especially tasty. We also ordered the lamb spine stew separately. It came in a huge pot, very well braised, and the meat fell off the bone easily. There was even bone marrow inside the spine, which I personally love. The flavor was good, though for my taste, it could have been a bit more seasoned. I tried the Mongolian cheese pancake for the first time and really liked it. Definitely eat it while it's hot -- the cheese inside gets nicely stretchy. If you've never had it before, I'd recommend giving it a try. A small disappointment was that the millet cake wasn't available that day. It's something I always order back in China, and I really miss it. The restaurant kindly gave us a voucher to use next time. The yogurt drink was also sold out, which I was curious to try and compare with the one in China. I ended up having the sea buckthorn juice instead. This is based on their lunch buffet, as we didn't try their dinner menu dishes yet. Through a foodie group I belong to, I heard about this cheap buffet that took over the spot of an upscale restaurant. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how they can charge so little and pay the rent of this large premium location. It's located at the promenade, an outdoor area of the Santa Anita Mall. They were a bit unorganized but we were seated quickly. The buffet area isn't big at all, and during lunchtime, the line gets long but it does move fast. The staff is constantly replenishing items that are low, and sometimes they bring out different items. The food were all just OK. Nothing really stood out except the meatballs. They were very soft and savory. The spicy fish filet, though had the spice I like, was mostly batter. Like several others, we didn't stick around long and just treated this like a quick lunch spot for a decent price. There was no need to go back for seconds. Surprisingly, the staff was very courteous, friendly and helpful. That would do well during the higher price dinner crowd. The buffet is 'Once and done' and it answered my curiosity. XiBei is a great place to for special occasions because of the upscale vibes and decor! Overall the food was top notch! Its located at the Arcadia promenade. Parking is underneath and once you take the escalator up, you'll see it once you turn around. It's a huge restaurant that can hold a lot of tables and great place for large parties. They do take reservations and it would be a good idea to reserve the Peking Duck. The value set for $98 that feeds 4-6 is the best set menu if you like the duck. It offers a total of 7 dishes, peking duck, and dessert! The portions are a good size to to eat as family style for up to 6 people. We still had a lot of duck to take home to eat! You have to order the Peking Duck if you are here! The duck skin and meat are very thinly sliced and the flour tortilla they serve is fresh and warm! The other dishes was kung pao chicken, brocolli, shrimp, salad, and noodle. Overall we had a wonderful experience! Staff was very friendly and stopped by to give us new plates. XiBei replaced Meizhou Dongpo at the Shops at Arcadia Mall. So this is right next to the Haidilao. So for the interior of this place, I have to say it's pretty tacky. I mean I don't know what kind of vibe it was going for. Did it want to be upscale or not? The red and white checker plastic table cover is really out of place and the tables are round so it feels like you're going for a picnic. Some of the stuff they kept from the original restaurant like the TV and the vase/shelf display. The bathrooms are pretty much identical to the previous place but just with new faucets that are too close to the edge so it makes washing hands a pain. So XiBei also exists in China so it was interesting to see it here in the states. Some of the food doesn't exist in China, like XiBei isn't known for Peking Duck but I'm sure they kept it because of the previous restaurant. So I ordered a whole bunch of food ranging from their Shiu Mai, Leek Dumpling, Cold Noodle, Brocolli, Roasted Fish, Scallop and Vermicelli, and cumin lamb. The Shiu Mai did not taste good, I feel like it's undercooked or something because there is raw flour in the crevices which gave it an odd dry taste and texture. The leek dumplings are interesting, I believe the skin is made from oat flour, and it's okay. Really thick skin. The roasted fish was good but it was a bit too salty. I think in general, a lot of the things here are a bit too salty. Like the Broccoli that I ordered was too salty to really eat and the cumin lamb was a bit too salty and had too many fillers? The fillers made me a bit nauseated, I think it's just too much parsley or cilantro. The service here is pretty good I would say which I think is the only really good thing about this place. The pricing is pretty expensive, I think on average each dish was at least 20 dollars and some were around 30-40 and a lot it went to waste because it was just too salty. Overall, I'm not a fan of the new place, it makes me miss Meizhou Dongpo. Service is good but the food is too salty. The funny thing is, on my credit card, it's charged as Meizhou Dongpo. I wanted to try XiBei since it's a (currently scandalous) chain in China and serves food from my hometown region. Overall the food wasn't bad, but nothing here makes me miss it or want to come back despite the nostalgia, which doesn't seem great for a restaurant just starting out in LA. The red checkered tablecloths give a strange vibe to the restaurant. The space itself is big and clean. Service was mildly intrusive, fine overall in terms of bringing what we needed. I don't know if the server was happy because we ordered a lot or what but we struggled to have a conversation at times because she was there so much and talking to us. This would be a solid 3 if not for the duck. Duck meat was good, surprisingly tasty--my expectations were low since this is not a duck restaurant and there's no way they're cooking them fresh. The reason for the low rating is because the duck carcass they gave us to take home was rotten, and since the meat was fresh, it means the server and/or the kitchen decided to switch it out for an old one. We stuck it in the freezer as soon as we got home and when we took it out to make soup, realized it was spoiled. This restaurant won't make soup or stir fry the carcass for you (we asked), they'll only pack it tightly for you to take home, which says a lot. I haven't been to another restaurant with Peking duck that does this. The fish, forgot the name, wasn't very good. The cuts are big/rough and the fish was kind of dry. I don't know if it's the quality of the fish or just overcooked. It's like a $60 fish and unfortunately I don't think their chefs have the skill to make this to its full potential. Since this place isn't cheap and the food is mid, plus the issue with the duck carcass, I see zero reason to return. read more

I like Xibei dishes. When we were in Beijing, we went to the one in SOLANA shopping center a few times. I am very excited that it opens one here too, and finally had a chance to try it. The staff here are friendly and attentive. The restaurant looks beautiful and feels comfortable. We ordered string bean noodle combo, which comes with chicken wings, cucumber salad, and drinks. Everything tastes delicious. The noodles are slightly bland, but I like it, feels healthier. I also added the cucumber salad sauce to the noodles, which made it taste much better. I like the house made plum juice too because it doesn't have a lot of sugar. Tasty and healthy, satisfied meal. It's hard to compare with the one in Beijing because we ordered different dishes, but I like pretty much everything I have tried so far. read more

I was very excited when I heard XiBei was opening in Irvine! Upon entering the restaurant, I was shocked to see how large and spacious the dining room was. The decorations and open office design of the restaurant made the experience feel unique and grand for a restaurant that just opened recently. My partner and I was going to order to meal for two for $68 total, but instead we decided to choose our own dishes. We started with the cucumber salad, which was savory and crunchy, but a bit too salty for my liking. Next were the lamb skewers, which was high quality and well seasoned meat. We wish some of the seasoning mix was provided on the side as well. The Mongolian beef ribs were enormous and worth the price, though they were a bit dry in some parts. However, the cauliflower included in the dish tasted amazing and paired well with the rib. The braised pork belly was SO GOOD, but I ended getting intense bloating afterward (but still worth it). My favorite dish of the night was the Oat wowo. I've never tried this dish before, and I loved the texture of the noodles as well as their unique shape. The tomato based sauce was very flavorful. The portions of the restaurants are definitely shareable and you will most likely bring leftovers home. Pricing wise, the price is a bit on the higher end, but the quality and taste definitely accounts for that. The staff were polite and patient as well. I would have wanted more tortilla wraps but everything else was perfect. Oat wowo noodles (7/10): silky warm oat noodles rigatoni in honeycomb shape. The pasta texture was very unique and pleasantly surprised me. Poured over is a tangy tomato sauce with eggplant and bell pepper bits. I would prefer if the veggie bits were diced smaller or maybe blended into a puree to make the noodles hold the sauce better. I finally checked out Xibei in Arcadia, which I learned is actually part of a big restaurant group from China known for bringing Northwestern Chinese cuisine to the U.S. Think hearty lamb dishes, chewy oat noodles, and rustic comfort food made fancy. The restaurant itself feels sleek and modern -- kind of like your favorite noodle spot after it studied abroad and came back with confidence. The space is clean, stylish, and warm, and it's nice to see something so different from the usual Cantonese or Sichuan places around here. I ordered the Sichuan pepper chicken with chili sauce, the steamed oat dumplings, the Mongolian lamb, and the sautéed mushrooms with truffle oil. The chicken was a solid 3 out of 5 for me -- flavorful but surprisingly mild for something labeled "Sichuan." I was ready for that numbing peppercorn kick and it just never showed up. The oat dumplings were the biggest curveball; I was expecting something completely different, and the egg inside caught me off guard. Flavor-wise, it was pretty mellow, so that one was a 2 out of 5. Now, the Mongolian lamb -- that was the star. Tender, juicy, and perfectly spiced, with just the right amount of heat and richness. I know lamb isn't for everyone, but I'm firmly on Team Lamb, so I might be biased. The sautéed mushrooms with truffle oil were another standout -- earthy, fragrant, and rich, with the truffle coming through beautifully. Both of those dishes easily earned a 5 out of 5 from me. Service was friendly, though the pacing leaned more "we're taking our time" than "we know you're hungry," but honestly, the food and atmosphere made it easy to relax.
