We went there for the sushi challenge (2 spicy hand rolls on the #10 spice level).. A waiver had to be signed! Anyways.. the challenge is doable (i didn't do it) and you get a picture on the wall and a shirt.... The food itself, other than the hand roll, was pretty good.. The spicy shrimp level 6 is hot enough to tolerate and have with a beer. The philly roll is far better than most places except for Monster Sushi in Montrose. I recently discovered this place after moving to Van Nuys, and I can't stop eating there. The prices are good and the sushi is great. 911 Roll and the rainbow (?) roll that has roe around it (and no salmon thankfully) are amazing. The blue crab handroll can't be beat. Though I give it five stars, my only concerns are when I order spicy tuna roll they think i want the crunchy one with cream cheese instead of a regular spicy tuna roll, so now I'm not sure I can actually get a spicy tuna roll. This is probably the best sushi in the heart of van nuys. I agree with another yelper that the parking isnt that great and half of the parking lot is reserved for the liquor store, but there are houses across the street so sometime you have to street park. but the food here is really good. I normally get the tuna hand roll (#3, i could not imagine how hot the #10 is) albacore (really good), salmon, shrimp tempura hand roll, the philly, and a rainbow roll. i recommend this place if you are in van nuys and want good sushi. read more

pretty good, the prices are very decent, spider roll for $7, that is pretty cheap...from what i could taste after and during the challenge was pretty good now the Ninja Roll Challenge...man....that was death....it was expecting more of a habanero spice burn but i surprised after my first bite that it was full of wasabi mixed with some red spices....to me it wasnt spicy mouth burning, it was just the wasabi nose burning n gagging, but i fought through and got my picture on the wall and my free t-shirt read more

Decided to give this place a try because it's one the better overall reviewed sushi places in the Van Nuys but was very disappointed. The fish must have been left out or something wasn't prepared properly bc never have we had sushi give us the runs like this place did. The restaurant was placed in a unappealing muggy plaza. Walk inside & it's a complete change from what you experience outside. There are at least 4 televisions in the small restaurant which tells me it's not Japanese owned. Sushi quality was very low & in small quantity. I ordered 14 dishes (2 Tuna, 2 Salmon, 2 Hamachi, Maguro, Uni, Ninja Handroll, Spicy Tuna Handroll Hawaiian Roll, Rainbow Roll, other two I cant remember to my dismay)& had 2 of them be forgotten until the chef reviewed my order again. To his credit there was a big rush of people arriving minutes after I submitted my order. The scipy level was quite impressive since it's been a while since I've had anything shock my taste buds ordering only a level 5 spicy tuna hand roll. Afterward, Tempura Ice cream to try to end the meal on a good note however, to my disappointment the green tea ice cream was near non existent & the breading had no crunch. I cannot imagine how this place has 4 stars. My 1 star is being kind, only because the server lady took her time to greet us. Let's start with the menu itself - disgustingly sticky and dingy. Clearly it has not been cleaned in maybe a year. The maroon table cloths probably have not been washed in months. There were dried sauce and food particles on the exposed parts of the cloth that touch the diner. The Special Cali Roll with Baked Scallops and Jalapeño Poppers took 40 minutes to come to the table. Neither the scallops nor tuna inside the jalapeño were fresh. Both had the trademark fishy taste of a non-fresh seafood. The tuna was definitely frozen and mushed together, similar to ground meat. The Squid Legs (aka calamari) lacked flavor - it was all about the spicy mayo to carry the flavorless squid. But hey, at least it was edible! Even the calamari took 15 minutes to come to the table. The #5 spicy shrimp roll was ok. The heat was good, but the inside was these sad looking mini shrimps engulfed in mayonaisse again. The pink soy paper was not fresh either. It took some forcing to keep the soy paper wrapped together! Overall, this place left a lot to be desired. It is a far cry from the Ventura strip sushi establishments. Where I thought this was going to be a hidden gem in a sketchy part of Van Nuys, it should be left buried instead! Btw, nothing authentic about a sushi joint being cooked and run by Indians (Hindi). No offense to them, but sushi should be left to the Japanese. Want great sushi? Go for Octopus Japanese Fusion in Encino or one of the many awesome places with kicking Happy Hours on the strip. Stuck in the Van Nuys area? - just head on over to Woodman and Roscoe's Sakura. It is a $1 difference from this joke of a place and well worth the $1. read more

Yagumo's is da bomb! Iv'e been going to Yagumo's for over 15 years! Hands down my favorite spot for sushi! The prices are fantastic & the portions are GREAT! You've gotta try them out! They were even featured on the show Outrageous Food on the food network channel for their spicy # 10 challenge! If you're brave enough give it a try! I'm not! Yaguma Sushi. Known for their super spicy tuna rolls.. hmm.. yes, let's give that a try! After an afternoon shopping, my friend and I decided to try their spicy tuna rolls and check this restaurant off of our "must eat" restaurant list. After entering the restaurant, we noticed that there were only 2 other patrons at the restaurant at 7:30pm. Strange for a restaurant that has 4 stars! Anyways, we decided to order and was blown away by the amazing prices. $4-5 for hand rolls and about $9-15 for combo dinner specials. That's a steal. Since it was our first time, we ordered the #5 & 6 spicy "secret" ninja rolls as well as #6 spicy tuna rolls. Both were good but the ninja roll def had more flavor. The spicy tuna roll just tasted like spicy mush and we felt like the tuna wasn't really well showcased. Since it was our first time, we decided to go with the 5 & 6 spicy but actually felt it was ok. I think if i go back, I'd be up to bump it up to a 7-8! One of the tables beside us decided to go for the #10 spicy tuna challenge. I felt bad for the guy as he started to choke and turn profusely red while he was chowing down on his hand roll. After a few bites, he forfeited. The sushi chef came by periodically to check on him since its always a danger to eat something of that caliber. Apparently there are 3 habaneros and chili powder in each hand roll. That's pretty crazy! For dinner, I had the yellowtail collar dinner combo and my friend had the salmon. Both came with miso soup, salad, rice, and ice cream. The soup was good and a nice way to warm up after a cold night. The salad was a bit saucy though. It was hard to eat the salad since it was drenched in sauce. After 15-20 minutes, our dinner arrived. Her salmon portion was great but the fish was a bit dry. My collar was a bit .. messy. It looked like it had blown up in the microwave. It also lacked salt and didnt look presentable to anyone. I guess I know now why it was so cheap. I'm not really sure what the buzz is about. Business was poor and food quality was sub-par. Will I return? eh.. we'll see. read more

My order was as follows: 1 BBQ Eel roll 1 Tuna Roll (no spicy tuna roll wtf?) 2 Dynamite hand roll There was very little meat on the tuna roll and it felt as if I was eating rice with sushi. The BBQ eel roll was pretty good, though I did not taste much bbq sauce. The Dynamite roll was the saving factor of my meal as I loved the first one so much that I had to get another. I might come back, but nothing really stood out from my visit. Parking is plentiful, decor is nothing to rave about, it was extremely cold and the prices were fairly cheap (6 bucks would get you a 10 piece roll or 7-8 for a specialty 8 piece roll). A friend and I also found this place through word of mouth. We ate at the bar ($10/person minimum), and we had a great time. The sushi chef was friendly, and the atmosphere was fun. Everything was fresh and inexpensive, and the specialty rolls were creative. This place is so good, I've gone 3 times in the past week. What a find! Customer service is on point, the fish is so fresh, and the rice never gets hard. They have me craving sushi every night, how's that normal? I've been to about 3 or 4 sushi places in this area (Oh oh sushi!, Midori Sushi, and some other places nearby), and these guys not only out price everyone else, but they out quality everyone too. Family owned, you can tell, and honestly a definite must try. Rainbow II roll, torched lobster, and amazing hand rolls... I mean really? We LOVE Yagumo! They give us great service and the food is delicious. For the price point, you just can't beat it. Because we go there regularly, they always remember our drink orders without us even having to ask and they take great care of us. The spicy numbers vary by chef, sometimes a 7 is spicy enough and sometimes a 4 is too spicy. But seriously, we love all of the spicy selections, even my kids love spicy #2 level and I love it a bit spicier. I highly recommend the Spicy Scallop roll and the Spicy Ninja Roll. My kids also love the Spicy Tuna Crunch roll. All of the Nigiri is prepared well and fresh. Again, for the price point, you won't do better. read more

I come here for the crunch rolls and the live entertainment. By live entertainment I mean watching some poor sucker go at the number 10 rolls. Nose starts running, face turns read, sweat beads down, some get up and run for the bathroom, some put their head down, others push on through. All for a polaroid picture and a t-shirt, awesome. I tried a piece of the number 10 one time after a buddy of mine tapped out. (And he's a serious spicy food eater, gets the spiciest shrimp diablo at El Viejito in Sun Valley, and was convinced there wasn't any hotness he couldn't handle. Habaneros, wasabi and wasabi oil gave him a proverbial "bitch slap". ) The piece I tried was about the size of a quarter, and my nose and eyes were gushing and my stomach was on fire for at least 2 hours. Grab some crunch rolls and watch other people suffer, or you can cheat and drink milk and take down the number 10, but you won't get my vote. read more

I love this place! Like others have said, don't let the outside fool you. The only reason this place gets 4 stars is only because of the parking lot and location. The service is always good here - it's fast and friendly. Sake and sushi prices are great. I definitely think this is the best sushi place in Van Nuys! This is seriously the best SHUSHI I've ever had!!!! The sushi always is fresh, the place is always clean and you're always greeted with a friendly and smiling face. And talk about service they always call us by our first names now and know what we order in case we forget :-) Love this place and can't give it enough praises. I have been a regular customer for 8 years now and I absolutely love them. Their food has been consistently a winner when I bring clients and friends. I brought them at least 60 guests and they all loved it (except one!). Why? Let's start with the fare: it is reasonably priced - if not, cheap, and you have a lot of choices. The regular dinner menu has cooked food and appetizers as well as sushi of all sorts and sashimi. A black board will usually display additional specials (about 6 to 8 depending on the day). Comparatively they are cheaper than the pre-packaged sushi at Ralphs!!! YES, I SWEAR. Some of my favorites: Shrimp Tempura (non greasy and the biggest shrimps ever!), crab and salmon hand roll (delicious), when available try the blue crab hand roll (divine!) or the lobster roll (yes and made with real lobter), spanish mackerel and other delicacies. You have to go and make up your own list of favs :-D The food is carefully cared for: the chefs will not serve any fish that they aren't 100 percent sure of. I had the owner come to me a few times in the past to tell me he won't serve this fish because it did not look right to his standards. I have never got sick after dinning at their restaurant, nor any of my guests. It is a A rating joint. Be prepared with the fact that even though it is a hole in the wall, the place is absolutely packed on the week-end and is very popular with the locals. They have that thing going about the spiciest tuna roll you can stomach (level 10) for which you have to sign a release. If you survive it and eat it all, you get your pic taken and get a Tshirt with their logo. Asians, Latinos, Europeans, LAPD, attorneys and business people frequent this unbelievable gem. The service is personable and the atmosphere unpretentious while nicely appointed (very clean bathrooms!) Now that the secret is getting out there via cable (they recently were featured on a cooking show). I even joked with them that we may not be able to eat at fresco and immediately got the reply "NEVER, we love our customers, we will always find you a spot". Wow! that is your neighborhood restaurant for you folks! Give it a try :-) read more
