A hidden gem! If I would have just driven pass it, I would not have gone in. Very unassuming strip mall restaurant with delicious food. Extremely clean, bright and welcoming. I loved, loved the decor, it made me feel relaxed and zen. The music was at very comfortable level, almost tranquil, the world outside the door was gone and here I was enjoying fresh sushi with the hubby in a place of peace. I ordered my usual California roll and shrimp tempura. Everything was presented nicely and very tasty. I like when I can have sushi that is fresh, not fishy smelling or tasting. Every bite had that nice nutty flavor of fresh avocado, crunchy of the cucumbers and great sweet taste of the crab, superb. Shrimp was fried well and just as fresh. This was my first time trying out Yama after hearing great things about it! The shop itself is adorable, a mix of small tables and booths. We were seated pretty quickly, but it took a very long time for us to receive our food (it took about 1.5-2 hours to get our 3 rolls and 1 appetizer). They did bring us some cucumber salad which was very tasty. We ordered the harumaki appetizer, which was just okay. The sauce added some flavor but the rolls themselves were a bit bland. The sushi was awesome though! The shrimp tempura and sweet potato tempura were flavorful and crispy, and the mango tango was a unique combination of flavors and textures that worked together so well. Overall, I enjoyed the sushi and think the prices were standard for sushi, but be careful coming here if you are in a rush or have somewhere to be because the food took a long time!! read more

Yama Sushi is an excellent choice for dinner in the Hampden region of Baltimore if you're out on the town between the Rotunda and Giant grocery store. Service and speed of take out/carry out was on point!! I received a text when order was placed, and an estimated time of approximately 20-30 mins to prepare 6 Rolls. They messaged me it was ready as I was halfway to the restaurant. Superb job!! Food Ordered: Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Crab Roll, Spicy California Roll, Sweet Potato Rolls (x2), and the Happy Face Roll The Happy Face Roll was everything that I could have imagined it to be!! So good!! The spicy rolls were perfect and hit all the right taste buds. One of my recent favorites rolls (and an underdog of rolls) to try at every sushi place I try is the Sweet Potato Rolls and they were amazing!! After a great time at Baltimore Chef shop where we learned to prepare Sushi, it was time for me to try some authentic Sushi. One of my friends who loves Sushi, took me to Yama Sushi bar for lunch. They have great variety of Sushi's in their lunch special. We tried their lunch box which comes with either 2 rolls with soup & green salad or 3 rolls. We tried 2 rolls : California Roll (just cause everyone talks about it :) and Eel Cucumber Roll (absolutely delicious). I had eel at Baltimore Chef shop and had been craving to try some eel. I am glad the Sushi was delicious at Yama Sushi bar. Their pricing is incredible. Lunch box is priced at around $9 which is great. Absolutely recommend you to try their Sushi. read more

I went to many Japanese restaurants in the past and the price were kind expensive. However, this restaurant is different with the others. They have a lunch special $10.25 for 2 rolls of sushi or $12.25 for 3 rolls of sushi and that come with salad and a bowl of soup. The sushi were fresh made, very typical Japanese sushi and the side just about right, not as big as the others restaurant. Friendly staffs and tables were clean and fast service. It's sadly because we didn't have a chance to go back to try their other rolls, because we were in Baltimore for a short period of time. But we will definitely to re-visit this restaurant again if we have opportunity to come back to Baltimore near future. read more

We shared the Dinosaur Egg (a ball of sliced avocado filled with chopped shrimp tempura, drizzled with yum yum sauce), poke salad (tuna or salmon over seaweed salad, spring mix, mango, and avocado), Alaska roll (salmon, avocado, and masago), Lemon Grass roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, salmon, masago, soy wrapper, and lemon), and Pearl roll (fried oyster, cream cheese, avocado, crab stick, tobiko, shrimp). The menu is large and varied; there seems like there's something for everyone! And everything we tried was very good. Service was good as well! After craving SUSHI for weeks! A friend recommended me to Yama. The inside was beautiful and was very similar to other sushi restaurants I've experienced. My friend and I were greeted by a nice host. The menu was easy to read and full of amazing sushi options. There were not a lot of deep-fried options, which are my favorite; nevertheless, I enjoyed my lunch. I ordered the three roll lunch special for $11- amazing deal! I ordered the California Roll, the Shrimp Tempura Roll, and the Spicy Crab Crunch Roll. All we're equally amazing. Yama's spicy mayo/yum yum sauce was PERFECT. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. I would recommend this place. TL;DR: Maybe good enough to satisfy severe sushi cravings, but do not come here expecting authentic Japanese cuisine. Had issues with the food and slow service. FOOD I came here a couple times but will focus this review on last night's visit since it was the most recent. I came here with my boyfriend and ordered the Seafood Udon ($10.95) and Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe ($29.95). The latter came with 9 pieces of sushi, 15 pieces of sashimi, and your choice of a 6-piece tuna roll or spicy tuna roll (we opted for the spicy tuna roll). The Seafood Udon was 2 stars. I had issues with the components of the udon. The broth and noodles were standard, but the toppings were mediocre and almost misleading. The menu stated that it would come with "shrimp, white fish, salmon, crabmeat & vegetable." By this, they meant 1 piece of shrimp, NO white fish, a couple slim slices of (what I perceived as) leftover, unwanted salmon sashimi, fake crabmeat, and an odd medley of vegetables that are not usually present in udon (green pepper, carrots, etc.). In addition, the egg, instead of being poached, was fried and then dunked into the broth. Gross. Would not order again. I also felt a bit mislead by the sushi and sashimi deluxe. The sashimi slices were not your standard slices (they were maybe 1/2-2/3 the size of a regular piece, so they definitely skimped on that). In addition, the variety of fish was very limited - tuna, salmon, red snapper, shrimp, and escolar. 2 stars. SERVICE The wait was too long. We waited a total of 40-45 minutes for our food, which is way too long for what we ordered. They did give us a free 4-piece sampler of a deep fried roll, which I did appreciate. Overall: food was edible and just enough to satisfy my bad sushi/udon cravings, but I would probably seek out other establishments next time I want Japanese food. read more

This is one of the better sushi places around Baltimore, and is in a very inconspicuous shopping plaza. I had the sashimi appetizer and a specialty roll, both of which were delicious. I've ordered their sushi boat via Grubhub where they are delivery only but there is a substantial markup. Yesterday I call the restaurant and ordered the boat for pickup. It was considerably cheaper. I was late in picking up and they gave me a very nice reminder call. When I showed up I was surprised to see that they had converted one of their doors into a pickup window with a pickup drawer and a small side slit for a credit card machine. This made me sad as I used to really love eating there. The food as always was delicious and they always give you a free row (the spicy girl roll) which my kid gobbled up. Also, the boat comes with 2 rolls which they asked me to pick out; I asked for chef's choice and they didn't disappoint. Those two rolls whatever they were were very very tasty. read more

My husband and I go here at least once a month and have gotten carry out a few times. Everything is very good and fresh. I usually get miso, edamame or seaweed salad, and one special roll. I haven't tried one I haven't liked. They usually throw in a small cooked roll on the house and they are interesting to try; it's always a nice plus. Amazing! The shrimp tempura had a different breading from the rest of the vegetables but it still tasted like heaven. The miso soup was in an adorable small bowl and it was cheap and delicious. The side salad was ok, wasn't amazing but it wasn't horrible, inside of the Pearl roll there was cream cheese, avocado and fried oyster and it was the best fried oyster I've ever had, the cream cheese was warm but not melting warm.
