We decided to check out this spot on the way back home from running errands on a Sunday. We were actually thinking about going across the street and getting takeout sushi from Fry's, but given some recent negative experiences with that, we decided to take a shot on Yanagi. We were definitely pleased with our decision. First off this is a small sushi spot located in a strip mall that is pretty unassuming and anchored by an Ace Hardware Store. They probably have 6 to 8 tables at the most including a sushi bar. They also have a couple of TVs which they were playing NFL Sunday football on, which was an added plus for me - having been out of the house all day. They had a couple of specials on a sandwich board near the hostess stand, but for the most part, the highlight of their menu is the fact that seemingly everything on the menu is technically on happy hour. Now I know the skeptic in you is probably thinking that just means all the prices are adjusted accordingly. And while this may be the case, in some instances, for the most part, we found the pricing to be pretty reasonable, even if the happy hour description was a little generous. The upside is that the sushi was well made, well proportioned was really fresh rice. Service was also prompt and attentive with three or four additional tables in the restaurant, the one hostess/server was able to pay attention appropriately. Overall, this is definitely a sushi restaurant I would return to for a weekday bite or an afternoon lunch. It's probably not the date night spot just based on sheer location and overall aesthetics of the surrounding area and parking lot plus no patio during the summer but definitely a top sushi spot in Gilbert nonetheless.

Cali crunchy roll and a couple other rolls

I've been coming here with my daughter about a year now and it's always consistently good, they have happy hour all day, and the staff is friendly. It's a casual place with pretty decor. The rolls are good, the food is fresh, and we usually get an appetizer and a roll or the two roll special. This is my go-to sushi place.

Location has a good amount of space inside for seating. Restaurant is clean. Waiters are very attentive and welcoming. This is our 2nd visit with no issues or complaints. Went during happy hour, on a Saturday and ordered 4 rolls that had been served very quickly. All the rolls are good.

Great happy hour deals, service was friendly, food was delish!! Salmon skin was a littleeee tough but enjoyed overall. Super small shop but great vibes!

We chose Yanagi after reading some good reviews. Unfortunately, nothing was good or even mediocre. Soft shell crab was heavily breaded and we couldn't tell what was inside. Giant scallop sashimi was off color, odd texture and tasted terrible. Raw sea scallops are among my favorite but I question if we were served scallop. I ordered salmon, albacore and hamachi nigiri. I tried all 3 and couldn't force myself to eat the 2nd piece of any of them. My husband offered me a piece of his sashimi... it tasted like they washed it. So disappointing to order over $90 of food and worry about the food poisoning awaiting us.

Happy girly with her miso and demolished Philly roles.

This is the best sushi in the area and we have tried them all. The owners are incredibly kind and thoughtful. They deserve your business. Also, my almost two year old daughter loves their food! Definitely kid approved. She's a big miso soup and salmon sashimi kinda girl.

Delicious and fresh sushi! The rolls are made with care and attention to flavor. The chefs take pride in their work and make sure the guests are happy :) The yellow tail and green onion roll was excellent!! The specialty rolls are unique and flavorful! All the appetizers we had were so good including the miso, tempura, and sashimi salad.

Our local favorite stop for sushi, sashimi and sake! Keep up the good work and great service!

Saw a post by a vegan influencer that this place had great vegan options, so I had to come check it out. Not only do they have vegan options, but they also have 2 full pages of vegan menu items!! I'm so used to just choosing between an avocado roll, cucumber roll, or tempura roll at other sushi spots, so this was exciting to have so much to choose from for my meal. I got the vegan gyoza to start and the crispy onion roll and the veggie delight roll. The gyoza was so crispy and the filling was packed with flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The veggie delight roll was spectacular with the variety of veggies inside the roll and the avocado and ginger sauce on top. It was so flavorful, and the sauce was the perfect compliment rather than the usual eel sauce. The crispy onion roll only had 4 pieces but they were massive (so big you have to take 2 or 3 bites). My face lit up as I bit into it. I expected it to just taste super oniony but the sauce drizzled over was sweet and created a dance of flavor in my mouth. It was like an onion ring only better! The onion had crispy outside and chewy center and then the panko crispies on top just brought it all together. I have never tasted anything like it, and even the hubby (non vegan) loved it! Hubby got the Alaskan, the yanagi roll, and the crunchy roll, and we got edamame to start. The Crunchy roll was a unique spin on the California Roll; very similar in substance, but with a delicious crunch from what seemed like a Panko-type crust. The Yanagi Roll was deliciously complex, and very flavorful. It was beautifully prepared, as well. The Alaskan Roll was Hubby's favorite; the warmth of the roll without being fully-fried was very unique, particularly considering the baked salmon. The roll also had a nice heat to it, but not such that it overpowered the other flavors of the roll. The server was great and friendly and the food came out super quick (we were here at 7pm on a Friday night and able to get a seat right away and it wasn't super busy). It got packed as we were leaving, so we just happened to get lucky when we arrived. The rolls were a little pricier than I'm used to paying, but it was totally worth it considering it wasn't just a basic avocado roll! We may have just found our new favorite local sushi spot!

    Bento box lunch

Stopped in for a quick lunch midday and really enjoyed my visit to Yanagi Sushi. We were seated right away and our server explained some of the daily specials they had, including all day happy hour. My partner ordered the spicy salmon rolls and I had the bento box. The miso soup was very flavorful, not a lot of pieces and heavy on the broth but I really liked it. The bulgogi in the bento box was super good, my favorite part of the meal. The salad was just lettuce and a dressing but seemed fresh. The California roll was solid. My partner said the rolls were delicious and we will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.

Place is great!, been to almost every sushi place in chandler and Gilbert Yanagi is a top choice. Amazing rolls, great service highly recommend!

Try the Veggie Tempura Roll. You won't be disappointed.

It's not near the best sushi I've had, but it filled the craving we had. The wall murals and decor were simple but classy. We also noticed the noise level was good despite many people in a small space. Overall, this is a nice little neighborhood spot for sushi and worth a visit!

I figured a Sunday afternoon would be calm, so I decided to pop in for a solo lunch. What I Ordered: - Yuzu Mule: The drink was delicious and refreshing, so I ordered a second one. Definitely order if I return as well. - Hamachi Lime Roll: This roll had an odd texture to me, and ultimately, I grabbed the rest to go as it was a little off putting to me. The flavor was decent though I found myself wishing there was more crunch with tempura flakes or panko bread crumbs on top. - Crazy Roll: The winner between the two rolls in terms of flavor and preference. Though, I wish this roll had the spicy mayo the other one had. I'd definitely order again and ask for a side of spicy mayo that I could add to the roll. Love the soy paper option! As for ambiance? I thought country music was an incredibly odd choice for this establishment hence the 4 stars versus 5 star review. I'd prefer more traditional Japanese music, or heck, even some J-Rock over American country music. I'm guessing Sunday afternoon is a slower time, so it was employee choice. Overall, I'd visit again when in the area and recommend to friends/family.

Course 2: Spicy Scallop Futomaki/hokkaido scallop / benishoga / chili crisp/ takuan / wasabi mayo. This roll tastes great, scallop tastes fresh and I love the way it was seasoned. However the rice around it was too much that I couldn't taste the scallop fully. I wouldn't get this dish again because of the rice around it was too much. Course 3: Ocean Trout Mi-Cuit/ okinawa potato croquette / citrus cream/fried capers / crispy salmon skin. I love the cream and the capers in this dish. The fish is seared. Although not much flavor in the fish itself but because of the sauce, it complements the dish well. Course 4: Dessert - Yuzu Lychee Sorbet/vanilla whisky hojicha granita. Oh my gosh, this is my favorite dish! It was so good and refreshing! The yuzu sorbet was tart and creamy. And the hojicha ice underneath was delicious! She was super attentive too and kept refilling our drinks throughout the meal. We tried a mix of specialty rolls and more basic rolls. Most of the specialty rolls were around $15 each, while the basic rolls were under $10. The spicy tuna rolls were especially good for the price because they were cheap, but still came out huge. Overall the portions were very generous and the prices weren't bad at all. I got the Hell Fire roll and it definitely lived up to the name. I handle spicy food really well and even for me this thing was extremely spicy. It was almost painfully hot, but honestly I kind of enjoyed the challenge, It was also really good besides just being spicy, so I'd definitely get it again. The inside also had a cool vibe with all the colorful lighting and it wasn't too busy when we went which was nice. Most of our sushi came out almost immediately. The fried rolls understandably took a little longer since they had to be made fresh. My only small complaint is I wish everything would of came out closer to the same time, because some of us already had food while we were still waiting on the fried rolls. Overall, really good food, huge portions, fair prices and great service, definitely a spot I'd come back to.

While we were waiting they sat another 4 with us. We all expected dinner & a "show", but none of us expected the show we got. One of the staff started screaming at another staff member. We had no idea what the female staff member was saying since her words were not in English. She was so loud & screaming in the bar area so the entire restaurant could hear her. A couple of staff members tried to claim her dow. This went on for several minutes. It was crazy. All us customers were silent & just looking at the girl screaming & yelling. The next thing we know, round two. It was unbelievable. What was even crazier was they didn't send the staff member home! No one came over & said a word. No one apologized or said anything. The restaurant is fairly large, and seems like a lot of people like coming here for family/friend dinners. Like the name insists, the teppanyaki is the way to go. Their menu isn't that large, so it was pretty easy to make a decision. I opted for the filet mignon (rare) along with shrimp. Teppanyaki is really more of a show/experience, so the food comes out to you in sections (versus all at once like at a traditional restaurant). The filet was so soft, and was perfectly rare, and the shrimp was so good. I think in the future I'd eat a whole plate of shrimp. I also got to try the yakiniku, and that was also pretty good but very sweet. Their Boo Yah Ka roll was also pretty yummy. It's essentially a spring roll, but with some spice and citrus to it.
