As an SF native, Yank Sing holds a special place in my heart. However, my visit today was extremely disappointing. Food - 3.5/5 Food was pretty good but not worth the price that they charged. At least with other upscale dim sum places, their dim sum and plating are fancy and have new twists so it feels like they try to justify their prices. The dim sum here was traditional but like something you can get from a takeout dim sum place for a fraction of the price. Secondly, there was very little variety. For example, they only have one type of steamed buns. No custard buns. No lava buns. Just bbq pork buns. That is incredibly odd to me considering that steamed buns are such a staple dim sum item. Also, none of their items contain beef so I sadly missed my beef cheung fun. The lack of variety in dim sum items left us very unsatisfied. Service - 3.5/5 I love that they still have the push carts. The staff was friendly and nice but the carts took a very long time to come by our table. Only special items can be ordered via QR code so we sat without food for a long time. It also took 20 minutes to get our tea pot refilled with hot water. This was on a weekday when the place was full so I imagine it being worse on a packed weekend. Parking - 3.5/5 Street parking around this area is a nightmare. Luckily, they validate parking at the Rincon Center Garage. With validation, parking is $4 on weekdays but complimentary on weekends. The parking entrance is on Spear Street, just past Penelope's Coffee. The garage is tiny and hard to navigate though so beware if you have a large car. Sadly, this will likely be my last time visiting Yank Sing unless I hear that the menu changes or expands. read more

Easy spot for a quick and easy dim sum meal. Food is all quite good - we had the soup dumplings (the best dish), gyoza, chinese broccoli, pork ribs, and chicken feet. Came here on a Saturday around noon. Lots of people inside eating but we were seated right away. They were pushing carts around and you can order from the carts. There are some items/drinks that you must order through the QR code/app site. We ordered: -shrimp dumplings -shrimp noodle rolls -siu mai (pork and shrimp inside) -fried shrimp thing -bok choy Overall it was good. Everything was tasty but I think for the shrimp dumplings and siu mai the texture of the wrappers are very different than most other dim sum spots that I go to. Not bad, but I prefer how other places have a softer texture. Taste of everything was good, I like their chili oil sauce a lot. Prices: expect SF prices, every item here costs way more than what you'd pay elsewhere (I live in the east bay) but it's also downtown SF so it's to be expected. I liked this place but I don't think I'd go out of my way again to eat here, only if I was in the neighborhood. Service was nice as well. This dim sum place is very popular among both locals and tourists. Best to make reservations on weekends cause the wait can get pretty long. Most dim sum places don't use carts to pass food on anymore ever since pandemic. It's great to be able to experience dim sum in traditional way! Loved the stylish tea pots! The varieties on the menu were smaller than other places we have tried in the city. But they had all the classic dim sum fare that's for sure. The flavors were one of the best and the service was great. The xiaolongbao was very delicious, I find the Cantonese restaurants in the city make soup dumplings surprisingly well. They are so good as I am not too into Dim sum so I am glad they have other options! Service can be wild because they are super busy. Last time we had to ask for forks like 3 times. The food is alright, nothing outstanding. personally I don't think it's worth the high prices since there are so many other dimsum spots here in SF. The ones that stood out to me were the shu mai, pork bun and steamed spare ribs, they were seasoned and cooked quite nicely and were pretty good. The rest were just alright, it kind of tasted a bit bland (especially the stuffed lotus leaf, it was 70% rice and not enough filling). One thing I will say is that the ambience is quite nice. It wasn't very full when we came in and the place was clean, the servers were tentative, and the decor was quite nice. I wouldn't come back here again. I don't think the price justified the food, and the location felt a little weird and off putting because its just randomly in a sterile office building. read more

This place is a great way to experience dim sum in the city. Yes, there are less expensive options and less touristy ones but no....they are not Michelin starred. The food is literally piping hot whether it's from the rolling steam tables or from the kitchen. The salt and pepper tofu is a must as are the steamed buns. Decent place for dim sum pushed around in carts. The shrimp dumpling (ha gow) was meaty but on the plain side. The bbq pork rice roll was very enjoyable as was the pork and shrimp dumpling (siu mye). Both with plenty of filling and flavor. The xiao long bao (soup dumpling) was average with a skin thin enough to prevent the soup from spilling out. The menu selection was smaller than other dim sum restaurants in the bay area, but it did have a wider range of alcoholic options. Yang Sing has two restaurant locations which is great. The last time we came it was very crowded and it seemed a lot better regarding crowd size and wait time. There was only two of us, so we ordered only a few items - but there was a small selection to start with. The good news - Yang Sing still does cart style where you can see the food and then order from the cart. The even better news is that instead of stamping a piece of paper, everything is done electronically. An improvement opportunity for them, allow you to view what you've ordered to date from the QR code (right now, it allows you to order special items that are not on carts like noodles, fried rice and other specialty dishes). So we ordered the following: * Hao Gao (shrimp dumpling) - it was 3.5 out of 5. Best is still at Good Luck dim sum. It was smallish, but still flavorful and perfect thickness to the wrapping. * Tofu wrapped with port - it was 3 out of 5. Not enough veggies - usually has Wood Ear mushrooms but this one did not - it was meatier because of less veggies. BUT, still tasty. * Shanghai dumpling (siu lung bao) - it was 2.5 out of 5. Not juicy enough....and smallish in size for the price. We should never order these at dim sum places and if you're craving this type of dumpling - go to a restaurant that specializes in them. * Snap peas with chili sause - it was a 4 out of 5. Very sweet, refreshing and tasty . * Steamed pork pun - it was a 3.5 out of 5. Not the best in the City, but the filling was good and the BBQ pork was not fatty - so pretty good. Good size - a bit larger than what you expect from Dim Sum. * Pea Sprout dumpling - it was a 5 out of 5 - probably our favorite dim sum because it was generous with pea sprout minced very finely mixed with meat. Very tasty. * Egg Custard - for dessert - it came with 4 custards. Very flaky and buttery (maybe too buttery). The custard was not too sweet but thicker than what I'm used to. It was a 3 out of 5. Overall, enjoyed trying a different dim sum place than I usual place - but be prepared to pay premium. Nice to do once in a while, but not every weekend dim sum place. $50/person for tab (before tip) is pretty expensive (considering the items that we got above). read more

This is a great place with solid dim sum. It wasn't mind blowing by many means, but it was still really good and the atmosphere was vibrant and nostalgic. Do try to get a reservation. There was a long waitlist and a crowd outside when we went. The shrimp dumplings (har gow) and the chicken feet were my favorites. I see people complaining about the steep prices and I think those complaints are valid -- you'd definitely get more for less in spots in Chinatown, but I think it was still a fair price. It's a classic spot, but it's really fallen off over the years due to popularity. My family and I used to come here all the time for dim sum, but now we're looking for a new go-to spot because of Yank Sing's decline. Yank Sing has always been known as a more upscale/ pricier dim sum spot in the city. It drew a lot of attention because the quality and authenticity were unmatched, and there would always be long waits, especially on the weekends. However, these past couple of times, not only has the service been slow and dismissive, but the quality of the dim sum doesn't taste the same as before. Not only do we have to constantly flag down carts, but they often don't open seating inside the actual restaurant so that they're able to serve more people. When that's the case, you're sitting outside in an indoor plaza surrounded by way too many people. It's hard to justify paying the hefty price when you can just grab dim sum to-go in Chinatown. read more

Overpriced mediocre dim sum with 1 hour wait around 11am on Sunday. You can get cheaper dim sum elsewhere. I much prefer Dim Sum King in Daly City, Harborview at Embarcadero or Good Mong Kok for take out. The one stand out was the shrimp rice roll which I was too hungry to take a picture of. It will set you back almost $15 though! Everything else was okay at best, much better elsewhere: shrimp dumpling, siu mai, chicken feet, stuffed lotus leaf, soup dumpling, and sesame ball Omg I didn't pay attention to the price. I couldn't believe I order Sesame ball for $14 and it was not even good! Pretty outrageous. I think they use sweet potato instead of glutinous rice. Super weird system where you just order tea/drink and other cooked food through toasttab. The rest you order from the rolling carts. Also disappointing at the lack of variety here as well. This was my first in-person visit to Yank Sing in many years. Some things had really changed, which I knew, like the fountain, that always added to the ambiance in the courtyard area is long gone. It was also perhaps my first time sitting in the "outside" area, rather than inside the main restaurant, closer to the kitchen. Yank Sing now offers some items for QR code ordering from the table as well, but none of the items that are on the cart can be ordered that way. If you want cart items, e.g. the traditional dim sum, you just have to wait. Service was pretty neglectful. We were seated as far away from the kitchen as it gets, and carts rarely made it our way. And then they did? Not much left, and nothing warm. We had to aggressively ask for carts to be sent our way at one point when it had been 20 minutes without seeing any, and we had an empty table. Being in the outside seating area really is not recommended. I did order my old favorites from a server, the snow pea shoot dumplings, but they never arrived. Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce. $9.50. Ah, the Chinese broccoli. The token vegetable that we do always seem to get, no matter who I go with. As always, it was fine. Exactly as expected. Steamed, light oyster sauce on top, served cold. It is what it is. Low 3/5. Shanghai Kurobuta Pork Dumpling. $16. The XLB were underwhelming. Mostly they clearly weren't fresh. I grabbed one and risked trying it immediately, and it was barely lukewarm. Being the first to grab one is supposed to be such a gamble, with the hot soup bursting into your mouth after all ... The wrapper was nice, soft and pliable, and it had a good amount of soup inside, but just not fresh. 3/5 Shrimp Dumpling. $9.50. The har gow was a good dumpling. Still not very warm, and not great or exceptional, but good. The wrapper was a bit thick, but it was loaded with big juicy succulent pieces of shrimp. My favorite item this visit. 3.5/5 Seafood Basil Dumpling. $9.50. Wow, I really didn't care for this. The wrapper was gummy. The wrapper was too thick. The filling was minced seafood that tasted a touch fishy, and wasn't very juicy or succulent like the har gao. I didn't even want the second bite of mine. Worst dish I had. Steamed BBQ Pork Bun. $7.50. The steamed bbq buns I thought were fine when I got takeout last year, so I tried one again. Our server nicely cut them in half for us. The buns were again fine. Soft and fluffy bun, decently saucy bbq pork filling. Reasonable amount of filling. Fine, but not special, and again, I couldn't help but think it could come from anywhere, including any random hotel buffet. 3/5. Phoenix Tail Prawn. $16. The Phoenix tail prawns were a first for me! My old dim sum group never really ordered fried items (it wasn't until I attended an event with the spring rolls and potstickers that I ever tried those common items!), so I just never encountered these before. I did really like the other fried items I had from Yank Sing though, even for event catering, so I was happy to try these. Like everything, they weren't hot. The dumplings at least held a little heat in the steamer baskets with lids on, but these were just sitting on plates on the cart, and were not even slightly warm. But they were nicely crispy, and had a big juicy prawn inside. I later saw they came with a special dipping sauce, but I didn't get it with mine. This was fun to try, and something very different. Definitely a heavier, heartier item, and I'd consider it again, although it made me wish I had seen the crab claws go by, as they are a similar item, and even more my style. 3.5/5 We finished with all 4 of the desserts. It was the birthday for one guest, and the restaurant actually put a candle in the middle of the platter, a cute touch. Because they brought these direct to us, as a bonus, these items were all actually appropriately warm and fresh! Sesame ball: These really are good sesame balls. Served warm, crispy, totally coated in sesame seeds, soft and pliable filling, lightly sweet lotus inside. Far better than average, or at least better than most I've had recently. 4/5. Egg Custard Tart. The egg custard tarts were also good, and served appropriately warm. The crust was buttery and flaky, and it made a mess, in the same way a good French pastry does. The filling was well set, not too eggy, and lightly sweet. Like most Asian desserts, not quite as sweet as my American brain wants a dessert to be, but still quite enjoyable. 3.5/5. Mango Pudding. $8. It had been a looong time since I last had this! Brought back memories. It was enjoyable - good mango flavor, creamy, nice texture, and I loved the cubes lurking within. Not exceptional, and not something I'd go out of my way for, but nostalgia, and good. 3.5. Overall, I was underwhelmed. Freshness and temperature of the items was certainly the biggest issue, but it also just wasn't anything special. read more

Attended my 40th UCSF, School of Pharmacy anniversary get together here. We had a private access to the outside balcony area. Plenty of room for 100 people. Service was ok, and the dim sum was great. The location is in a multi-business mall like setting. Good parking access and close walk to the water. It was very busy so reservations may be a good idea. read more

I finally made it to SF to get what I remembered and it didn't hit the same. First of all, service was slow and poor. Our server checked on us maybe twice, we found ourselves flagging down anyone we could to get forks, saucers, etc. We ordered; crispy tofu, eggplant, Szechwan chicken, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, fried sea bass, peking duck, noodles and fried rice. The piece of duck that we were given was literally as thin as a credit card. Everything was mediocre, but the sea bass was excellent. I saved room for egg tarts and they sold out! My friend recommended Yank Sing for dim sum specifically on Spear Street so we decided to be proactive and make reservations! Parking can be tricky to find but there is garage parking underground that they can validate for you! We were quickly seated when we arrived. The restaurant is HUGE, lots of ladies with carts that come around very frequently. I do have a QR code set up for tracking what you order and you can order specialty items via the QR code. We ordered crispy tofu via the QR code but everything else was easy to find as the carts came around. They had the usual items including shanghai dumplings, hai gao, pork dumplings, shrimp noodles, pork rice noodles, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf, sesame balls, turnup cake and more. We even ordered the Chrysanthemum tea! When the bill arrived, however, we were shocked to see that it was nearly $160 not including tip. This was definitely more than I expected. Service was GOOD- not great, towards the end we had to really search for someone to help us (three different waiters came by but none of them helped me get the turnup cake that I wanted until 15 mins later). I don't know if I would come back - I loved the food and the fact that we didn't have to battle Chinatown traffic - but it's quite expensive! read more

All the food was well prepared and you get the very attentive service of a small local dim sum palace but the space was huge. The variety of traditional dim-sum and other traditional Chinese foods for the non adventurous. I'd recommend this place for any level of dim sum connoisseur. If you're looking for dim sum, you will not be disappointed if you visit Yank Sing restaurant. Not easy to get a table walking in. Your request is put into a computer, and a text is sent when the table is ready. We waited 30 minutes. It is a big seating area. And all the tables are full. The place is definitely popular. Tables are turned around quick and servers with dim sum carts whiz past you. All of them seemed to be in a hurry. You literally have to flag them down. Do they have a plane or train to catch? And it was difficult to find a person who could answer English questions about the dishes. So there are steamed, fried, grilled and baked dim sum dishes (picked from the carts), in addition, to other Cantonese items ordered off the menu. We got the crab claw, then shrimp rice rolls which were steamed, chicken spring rolls, and sweet potato fish rolls (see my pictures). The dishes were pricey. The two crab claws were very small, but unique. The chicken spring roll was crisp and good. The shrimp rice roll which was cut up, was soft and melted in your mouth. The fish roll which they said was Seabass, was luke warm to cold. It tasted fresh, but if it was hot, it would've changed the game. This eatery needs to make sure that everything that is on the carts is hot... If not discard. How would you like to eat room temperature to cold french fries? The restaurant has many accolades, including winning a James Beard Americas Classics award in 2009....now that is impressive. read more

Yank Sing is my favorite dim sum place at the moment. I like how the dim sum is traditional and classic. They have a cart that comes around so that I don't need to look at the menu. Their sauces and dim sum hit the spot. The chilli oil compliments the dim sum and is always in a clean container. The dim sum has expertly mixed filling, without being unnecessarily shaped like an animal. If I had to choose between the two locations for Yank Sing, I would choose this one, because the food tastes better. However, I recommend making a reservation especially on the weekend because the line gets long. The other location might have a shorter wait, but this one is the best! read more

The food is solid, they still walk around with the cart which I prefer because the food is fresh. I love the green scallion pancakes. The pan seared chicken bun are good too, I like the crispiness of it. The scallop siu mye is great too, only 3 pieces tho. The sesame balls are the best thing ever. The food tasted very authentic, but the portions are a bit smaller and the prices are higher than what we were used to in NY (but SF tends to be pricer altogether). We were surprised by the variety of options and were pleasantly surprised by the taste of everything! The staff members are super friendly and all are bilingual, a huge plus to non-Chinese speakers. This is my wife's favorite Dim Sum spot. It's kinda pricey so I bring her on special occasions. The food is good though. We went on Valentines before we went to see MJ. We had the shrimp dumplings, spring roll, steamed BBQ pork bun, soup dumplings, honey walnut prawns and sesame balls for dessert. (Forgot picture of prawns and sesame balls) We also ordered a cup of steamed rice on the side. There was plenty of food left to take home afterwards. The tea was great as usual. The shrimp dumplings were on point and the soup dumplings were great on their own. However they give you a side of vinegar and ginger to add to it. The prawns were special order so they were piping hot and good when they came out. We got there right when they opened and everything was fresh on the carts. Overall good experience and wifey was happy so no issues from me. Will be back. read more

I worked in a building next door 20 years ago and remembered this place as one of my favorites. I just went back for the first time since then and was very disappointed by the strange and inattentive service. They brought us to our table and walked away without a word. We were a party of 4, but they gave us only one menu. No one took our drink order. We had to wave someone down. Then we waited around 10 minutes for drinks and had to wave someone down again to check on them. We didn't even have water for the first 20 minutes we were eating. They refused to take any orders off the menu and insisted we order from our phones. They didn't bring a paper check, and just put an electronic device in front of my face to pay. They wouldn't give change for cash. This is a kind of pricy sit-down restaurant, but the worst service I have ever experienced at any restaurant that I can remember. read more

A few, rare carts seen in the distance had entree-type dishes or desserts. Rude wait people in a hurry who didn't care at all about service or selection. Menu for ordering food is very very limited and unappealing. This is not the former Yank Sing that I patronized years ago. Food doesn't taste good. Dim sum selections seem to be variations of the same ingredients. Shrimp dumplings had a shrimp paste, not real shrimp. Crowded and noisy. No concern for diners pleasure nor courtesy towards diners.
