YGF is one if the most unique places on the Ave. Whether you are a college student looking for anything to fix your hotpot craving or just someone looking for a yummy meal to share, YGF is worth a try. Food 4/5: If you are looking for a deep mala flavor from your soup, you probably won't find it here. They are pretty inconsistent with their spiciness and I haven't had a soup that that thought was ma, but there soup is still very tasty and satisfying. The meat and vegetable quality are quite good with their lamb being my favorite. I am also a fan of adding enoki and black fungus to mine. They have a wide variety of fish tofu so it is worth a shot if you are interested. Value 4/5: Price is based of weight so I would plan your meal accordingly. Noodles and fish tofu will not be as value but don't let me stop you from trying it. Meat and vegetables are my go to. While I probably wont come here alone, I think it is definitely worth sharing a bowl with someone else as one bowl can be too much for one person. Service 3.5/5: The way YGF is set up, you grab the ingredients you want to eat and the employees cook in the the mala tang for you. Ingredients are refilled often. If this review was solely based on taste, it'd be like a 20/5. The broth was crazy flavorful and if they just sold the flavor base I'd probably never eat anything else ever again. No malatang or hotpot I've had recently can measure up. And they had aallll the yummy ingredients I love which proved both a blessing an a curse. As much as I love udon and quail eggs and oyster mushrooms and tofu skin and you tiao and lamb and beef and tripe and bamboo shoots and everything else I put in, i knew, I KNEW, that I'd end up getting so much more than I'd bargained for. I always underestimate these things but I went in with what I thought was a modest goal of staying under $30 (with $15.99/lb i think). Well I ended up paying like $42 with tax and tip. At least it lasted me 2 meals so I guess I'll just think of it as 2 $20 meals. Protip: make it worth by taking it home and adding a bunch of stuff yourself. Imagine getting this in china and having it be actually afforable. I think I'll stick with ACYE hotpot for the value at least they zero the scale at a negative to subtract the weight of the bowl. read more

I love the concept of being able to pick out the toppings that you want for your soup. It's kind of like hotpot except you have full control over the quantity. You do pay by the pound here so it can be quite an expensive meal. I would say I have a pretty small appetite but the last time I was here the total was around $20 after tax & tip, which is a little pricey in my opinion. Another thing is that they don't sell rice here so you basically have to choose between a few of their noodle options. The soup is also really spicy. YGF Malatang takes me right back to China. This is probably the 20th time I'm here. Food is fantastic as usual! The beef soup flavor is so strong and authentic. (I'd recommend this one, wouldn't recommend the tomato base, last time I tried it and it was not very tomatoey). The price is relatively okay, all other MalaTang I've been to are around the same price. They've got a lot of fresh ingredients for you to choose from. Had this a few days ago and I can't stop thinking about it in a good way. The beef broth is really good, low to medium level spicy. I wish there was a scale near the ingredients so you could approximate how much you're getting. It was my first time and I ordered WAY too much. There are a lot of options which is nice -- quail eggs, udon and ramen, mushrooms, lentils, so many different types of fish balls!! Also, the tomato base is vegan and not spicy, and there are tofu / veggie / mushroom options for the vegetarian/vegans. Service is a little confusing and hard to hear your order number, and if you don't speak Chinese I'm not sure how you would know it's yours unless you go up and ask every time. Maybe an electronic sign that lists the orders that are ready would be useful. Three stars at the best. If you are curious about northern-east Chinese Mala Tang, it's good to try out just once. The set up is like a salad bar where you pick up all the raw ingredients you would like to be cooked together in the Mala Tang: beef / lamb slices, all kinds of fish cake/balls, a variety of veggie and tofu choices, and some carb options like glass noodle, rice cake. The meat are fine and personally I like their veggies and tofu better. The issue is mainly with the broth - it's has sesame sauce, chili oil etc as the base and as a result the Mala Tang soup is very oily :( The price point is reasonable. Authentic serving style for ma la tang, that is do it yourself- pick up the stuff you want to eat, and they dump it in the soup pot and cook it for you. Really expensive for what it is, expect to pay $20-30 per bowl per person. I guess there is no other 麻辣烫 in town, but still, $30 for a pretty much self serve dish, I rather sit in a proper restaurant with service where I don't have to any work. Flavor is really just meh, similar to what you can do at home with grocery bought ingredients at a local Chinese store. I'm a huge fan of malatang and was really excited that there is a malatang place in the University District. Food: I got about 1.5 pounds of ingredients to share between two people. The broth itself is very flavorful and was a good base for the rest of the meat. YGF serves malatang almost hot pot style where you pick your own assortment of meat, veggies, and noodles. They add it to a large bowl and cook the food for you. My only concern is that the wait was quite long. Price was slightly expensive. We ended up spending about $18 for a large bowl. read more

Finally Seattle has a Malatang place that specializes in it. Its a cute store and all the food contents for malatang are sitting in a cooled shelf. You just pick what you want and they cook it for you. They have a lot of variety here so you're bound to find something you like. Right off the bat what was most impressive is that they actually don't cook everything at once and they actually put things in at different times so everything has the right cook on it. Other places just throw everything in all at once and things get soggy. The flavor of the malatang is pretty good and i think you can also get a tomato broth if you dont want the original. You can also make it more spicy and they add some Chilli oil to it. Be mindful that this dish is based off weight. Generally the times I have come here the price had come out to be around 20 bucks and it is always been filling for me. read more

i've heard about this place a while ago but decided today to come here with one of my friends for dinner! when you walk in, there are big plastic bowls and tongs and the selection of veggies, meats and noodles to put into your hotpot. i got korean glass noodles, some fish cakes, veggies and some sort of thinly sliced brisket. they weigh your bowl at the register then ask what soup base you want and what spice level you want (i got the beef bone(?) base and regular spice) - i believe my total came out to about $25+tip which wasn't surprising based on the reviews i saw before coming here. i waited around 10-15 minutes for my bowl. when they called out my order number i saw that the amount of food i got actually ended up being a lot more than what i could finish LOL. the flavor of the soup was just meh. it wasnt bad but it wasn't amazing. i thought it was a little plain and if you love spicy food like me, you could definitely go spicier than the normal spice level. i don't think i would come back again just because it's pretty pricey for what it is but the workers are really polite so that's a plus! EDIT: forgot to add that the only sauces they had were vinegar and soy sauce :( im not sure if they usually have other sauces but this is also why im rating 3 stars read more
