Beef roll was delicious and juicy. The green onion pancake was an unexpected hit as it was crispy and flavorful on its own, and was even more tasty with the garlic soy sauce. The pork sandwich was average, overall it tasted OK but was a little bit on the dry side. I would skip the XLB next time. The restaurant is more geared to takeout than dine in. There are a few tables where you can sit and they are well spaced out. It isn't full service; it's more food-court style. read more

Came on Saturday around 11 am. We were in the area and my husband has enjoyed take out from this place before. It was pretty crowded when we got there. Fairly long line to order at the counter. Groups of people were waiting for tables which you have to find on your own. It's a bit stressful, you gotta watch for tables that are finishing up like a hawk. Luckily, I was able to grab a table for two. We were given a number scribbled on the back of the receipt while we waited at our table for food. After about 30 minutes of waiting and no updates, I went to check. There were other disgruntled customers ahead of me also checking on the status of their food. When I mentioned we had been waiting to one of the workers, he seemed to look around and then forgot about me. A while later, another worker was able to help me and it seemed like magically the food was ready...so I'm not sure if they had forgotten us. - Salty rice roll with pickles: this was unique, I've never had it before. Sticky rice burrito thing filled with a Chinese donut, shredded pork floss, Chinese picked vegetables. It was tasty and probably something I would get again. Not sure the taste is for everyone though. - Green onion pancake: crispy, flaky and delicious. Good to dip in their garlic sauce or black vinegar Overall, 3.5/5 rating. I had a few things for take-out lunch from Yi Mei as my coworkers wanted to try something new. I went with the beef roll with sour pickles ($7.75), scallion pancake ($3.50) and turnip cake ($3.50). All were packaged separately in neat little white paper boxes a la Din Tai Fung style. The beef roll was good but I may opt for no sour pickles next time as the after taste was a little too much after a while. It was a different beef roll than I have had in the past but it was still tasty. You get 4 cut rolls and they are loaded with shredded marinated beef. The beef roll was a little oilier than I would like... The scallion pancake was good but to me it needed a dipping sauce or something like that. You get 4 good sized pieces but it would have been better with a peanut sauce IMO... The turnip cakes were great. I love them at dimsum and at Yi Mei you get 4 good sized pieces that are browned all on the outside. It was so good and something I would for sure get every time. Great flavor and value. Peanut milk and soymilk on point!! Got their sweet and salty fantuan which taste legit and freshly made. No stale rice or doughstick in sight! There is already salted radish in the salty fantuan so can skip out on the extra pickled mustard greens otherwise it can be a bit of sodium overload. Drove about 40 minutes to get here and would do it again just for that mi jiang (peanut milk). read more

Yi Mei is pretty hidden in a plaza in Monrovia, where sells pretty decent Taiwanese breakfast and brunch. It's a cleaner version of Yung Ho cafe, I would say! Recommended Personally, I like their pork belly baos/sandwiches the most. It tastes like a smile and good memories! They have the same quality as BaoHaus, pork belly is perfectly cooked with flavors, you can taste the meat quality and cilantro and peanuts with one bite! One of the best I've tried in the area. We also opted for xiao long bao (mediocre), soy bean milk, salty rice rolls, beef rolls (*SO* good), and sweet tofu soup, and some stewed food, all pretty decent! *Food coma attacked* All in all, compared to other Taiwanese breakfast places, I think Yi Mei certainly knows how to make decent meat dishes. I've gotten many things from Yi Mei including the sticky rice rolls, porridge, and daikon pancake - but this time around I tried their Mushroom and Pork Bun and their Green Onion Pancake (no egg). Green Onion Pancake (No Egg): Get it with the egg. Although still yummy to eat especially with their AMAZING garlic sauce, I feel like this was just lacking in sustenance. Also the egg flavor would definitely tie the dish all together. Mushroom and Pork Bun: Pretty good size for only $1 something. Used to love coming here but recently when I came, this lady that was helping us was so rude. We bought some rice rolls and soy milk but this lady would only give us ONE soy sauce and ONE hot sauce. I had to explain to her for like 5 mins that my friends and I don't want dip in the same mini soy sauce cup and then she just gave us ONE more soy sauce. Then when getting the soy milk she just kept telling us to grab it yourself and when we grabbed it she said that's not the right size so we had to go back and forth. Really disappointed on how this place turned out. Used to love the rice rolls here, but now I'm not even gonna bother with the hassle. Four season is just disappointment after disappointment... so we have decided to try out this place. The breakfast menu selection is definitely less compares to four sea BUT, 100% more friendly than four sea. I do feel that yimei breakfast has more "fillings" and bigger portions also. I am alittle disappointed at this place. Used to come here more when they first opened. Their food quality was superb. Truly enjoyed their Taiwanese dishes. However over the years their food quality has gone way down. Now it looks like they make these dishes in a rush. It's partially a self dine experience though they do deliver the meal to your table. You'll have to gather your own utensils and napkins but your golden afterwards. I would rate their juicy pork dumplings as subpar as they were tasteless and tiny. The pan fried pork dumplings are even more tiny and more tasteless than the the steamed. The place is kinda dirty as their are food crumbs everywhere. It was pretty dead when I rolled in and slowly got busier. If your coming to this plaza and want tastier dumplings I'd recommend Luscious Dumplings across the way. I was initially a bit weary as I've grown accustomed to the typical American breakfast found in commercials: cereal, yogurt, and fruit. These Taiwanese items are things I'd probably have for lunch or dinner due to their heaviness, but I'm so glad I tried them as they were delicious! Fresh homemade soymilk in two sizes (small or large) for less than $3 each - go for the large, you won't regret it. The pork belly sammich (gua bao) was a smorgasbord of flavors: tender juicy pork belly, pickled veggies, cilantro, and crunchy peanut spread (similar to peanut butter) all on a soft sweet bun. This was my favorite and I still dream about it. The salty rice roll consisted of a Chinese donut surrounded by dried pork and then enveloped by sticky rice - absolutely scrumptious! The daikon cake was crispy on the edge and soft inside, topped with egg for extra oomph. The egg omelet was thin and flattened, then wrapped within an onion pancake - it'll change your perspective on eggs. This was my first time and certainly not my last time. All Day Breakfast Chinese style! If you are craving for breakfast at 3pm then Yi Mei is for you. They serve Chinese rice roll, porridge, donut, radish cake, soy milk, flatbread and many more! I was so happy I didn't have to wake up at 8am for this! Soy milk: It was my first time trying salty soy milk with Chinese donut inside and it was surprisingly good! You can tell the soy milk is unprocessed with all the soybean residue. Radish cake: My favorite was the radish/turnip cake for sure, super crispy on the outside and soft in the inside! Getting hungry just thinking about them!!! Rice roll: The rice roll wasn't bad, had enough sour pickles and the chinese donut was food, although it was a bit dry. It wasn't the best in terms of flavor, but I'd consider eating this as often as I'm around the area. The rice was soft, and the crueller was pretty good (not stale like some other places I've tried). Be sure to ask for pickled veggies as well as egg INSIDE the fan tuan, or you might as well not order it at all. The HOT SOY MILK I ordered was alright. It was not as strong in flavor or sweet enough for me. Hot soy milk needs to be sweet...that's is how I grew up drinking it. Yes, you can always add sugar, as that's how normal people do it. But I've always felt the perfect cup of soy milk would be naturally good...without additions. MMM......sooyyyyy milllkkkk. My FINAL VERDICT is that Yi Mei is really a good spot to come for a quick Taiwanese (or Cantonese) Fan Tuan breakfast. Yi Mei is a great place to get Taiwanese breakfast. I've ordered take out twice and have enjoyed the soy milk and a variety of their Chinese breakfast food. You can order regular soy milk (add sugar yourself) or salty/savory soy milk separate or in a combo meal. A cup of soy milk starts at $1.75 and a combo with soy milk and breakfast item is $4.50. They offer other small pastry/cakes (limited so far) and have a limited variety of entrees other than breakfast items. Hopefully they can expand this in the future. BREAKFAST FOOD Fried Turnip Cake - 4/5 They are thinly sliced and fried to perfection! My only gripe is that the portion is pretty small, 4 thin pieces. Traditional Breakfast - 3/5 I don't know what they call these fried pieces (one is long and deep fried; the other is a flat bread that you wrap around the long piece). I only like the long piece (it's perfect) and don't care for the flat bread piece which doesn't have much flavor. Rice Roll - 4/5 One of the best ones I've had, and they probably hand made it to order! OVERALL The soy milk and breakfast food are both great, but the portions are smaller than other restaurants serving this type of food. I think I found my new Taiwanese breakfast place! I know I raved about the fan tuans from JJ Bakery, but JJ has nothing on Yi Mei! I've heard good things about this place since it opened up, and I've always been eager to try it. I wasn't able to eat at the restaurant, but my dad bought to-go from Yi Mei for my lunch one day. I think Yi Mei is located in the Super A Market on Duarte, which if I remember correctly, has a big lot full of parking spaces. I wanted the fan tuan with pickled vegetables, and my dad added on a radish cake with egg and a fan tuan for himself, as well as a hot soy milk. So was it amazing and more? Yes, it was really good! BUT I had paid an extra, what, fifty cents for the pickled vegetables, so I expected the fan tuan to be loaded with it! I honestly couldn't tell my fan tuan apart from my dad's if I had to look by comparison if it wasn't for the yellow dot or whatever that indicated mine was different. There wasn't any pickled vegetables! I was so disappointed. And I know Si Hai packs their fan tuans with pickled radishes and whatnot to give some more flavor, but there wasn't much inside that rice roll except the you tao and the rice itself. However, it was a very delicious rice roll even though I didn't have my packed pickled vegetables inside. There was a good ratio to the rice, you tiao and the pork sung. As for the radish cake with egg, it was definitely tasty. There was only egg on the top two radish cakes, but it was still unique tasting. They have the special garlic soy sauce and hot sauce too to add an extra kick to the radish cake. The soy milk was good as well. I am not a fan of hot soy milk, but I have to say that Yi Mei makes it well! It had more sweetness to it than other places and I could taste the soy beans! A secret gem to get legit Taiwanese dishes. All the bandwagons just go to Din Tai Fung to get their Taiwanese dishes but this place does justice and for a much cheaper cost and doesn't required to wait sometimes over an hour to get seated/food. Their soy bean drink is very good and cheap $1.75. They also offer a combo where you order one dish and get a soy bean drink for $4.50. Items tried so far were the Xiao Long Baos, Rice Roll, Oyster Pancake, and the fried Daikon cakes. All were pretty delicious but the Daikon cakes were a little too fried and oily for my taste. It may be the norm so you may just love it. Only downside with this place is that it's cash only, aside from that, staff is very nice and polite and seating shouldn't be too difficult as most people get it to go or just eat and leave. They also sell their frozen dumplings to go which is what I did since Xiao Long Baos are not very good in San Diego so I decided to get couple bags for back home so I don't need to drive here every weekend to get some legit Xiao Long Baos haha. One minor complaint is that many of my frozen Xiao Long Baos are clearly cracked so all the juices will/have spilled out when I steam it which is kind of a little disappointing, I hope they fix that with better quality control. Came by this place this afternoon (sometime after 12:30 pm) and found the place to be quite empty. I was immediately greeted by the woman behind the register and I decided to order the #5 combo (Daikon Cakes with cold soy milk. You can also choose to order the soy milk hot if you prefer.) Total cost was only $4.50 (including tax & CASH ONLY here). I ordered this meal to go and only waited a short time before it was ready. The daikon cakes were a little oily, but I've had greasier ones at dim sum restaurants. The cakes (comes in 4) were tender in the inside and nice and crisp on the outside, truly delicious. The soy milk tasted just fine, but honestly, I don't know why soy milk and daikon cakes would exactly go well together... but I did finish it all. I prefer the soy milk to have a less beany taste, but that is just my preference (I honestly enjoy drinking the soy milk made by Silk or by 8th Continental Soy instead of the hot ones you can get at the Chinese markets). Overall, great place to grab a bite to eat or have a Taiwanese breakfast (although it is a bit too oily and heavy for me to have for breakfast though) and would come back. By the way, the woman's restroom was pretty clean and adequately stocked. A fun find on our way home from an early morning Walmart trip! I've always liked Taiwanese breakfast, although I'm not too familiar with its offerings. I knew we had to get the Chinese donut with salty soy milk -- the other items we ordered from seeing pictures on Yelp. Something we found confusing is that they offer numbered combos that come with soy milk, but at first we didn't realize they were combos and thought they were just numbered menu items. In the end we ended up getting one combo for the soy milk and the rest a la carte. Here's what we tried: -Chinese donut: Deep fried and greasy in the best way. So good when dipped in the soy milk -Salty soy milk: Already comes with pieces of Chinese donut, but I'd still recommend getting a separate donut to maximize the crispy factor -Egg omelet: This wasn't that special to me. It kind of reminded me of a tortilla with scrambled egg. -Daikon cake: Yum! one of my favorites at dim sum. -Beef roll with pickled vegetables: My least favorite because it was salty. I'm sure adding the pickled veggies didn't help. -Xiao long bao (juicy pork dumplings): They were good, but not amazing. -Salty rice roll: Kinda like a sushi roll without the seaweed, stuffed with pork sung (dried shredded pork) and I think picked veggies. THE YUM::: Saw the great reviews and it did not disappoint! We got the rice roll combo (#2) with cold soy milk and we also got the Taiwanese sausage over rice. Edit--added more items we tried. --The rice roll has shredded meat and Chinese donut inside and was bigger than I had anticipated. It was very flavorful and went well with my soy milk. At first, I was afraid that I didn't order enough food for myself, but one rice roll was enough to fill me up good while I still shared some with the bf. =D --The Taiwanese sausage over rice was also super delicious, infused with flavor. Loved the tea egg's flavor though the egg itself was a bit on the dry side. It was a good size, enough for two people to share. I love me a good Taiwanese breakfast! NOM. --The beef sandwich had great flavor, loved how crispy the buns were! This was one of the combo items that comes with a soy drink. They will offer you pickled veggies in it but it will cost 50 cents extra. --Wonton noodles soooooo good here! The soup is flavorful and the wontons are tasty and delicious. It's different than the Cantonese wonton soup (and a nice change!), and definitely recommend this. --Salty warm soy milk was not bad, unlike the cold soy milk it isn't sweetened. It has Chinese donut pieces inside so be sure to drink it before it goes soggy. Stir it up before drinking because I realized after finishing that I left out some flavor at the bottom. --I really really love the flavor of their chili oil! I'm not a fan of breakfast but I sure am of theirs! They serve the best rice rolls ("fan tuan") made fresh to order. The rice roll was warm and delicious that's wrapped around a Chinese donut with pork sung. Don't forget to add the salty veggie pickle for 50 cents more. Trust me, it makes a huge difference! This place is a winner in my books for one of the best Taiwanese breakfast in the SGV. In my opinion, it's even better than Huge Tree Pastry off Atlantic Blvd in Monterey Park. Another top favorite dish of mine would be their beef sandwich + sour pickle! The breading is flaky, crispy and just falls right off your mouth with every bite. It really is to DIE for! Yi Mei is located to the left of Hong Kong Supermarket, while across the same plaza is Luscious Dumplings, my favorite noodle place. My first time in a Taiwanese breakfast place. Their breakfast items include egg omelette 蛋餅, rice rolls 飯糰／粢飯, soy milk in sweet/salty versions 甜／ 鹹豆漿, fried dough 油條. Many of these items are familiar to me as I would eat Shanghai-nese breakfast as a kid. You first order at the register and you'll get a tag. Cold drinks/mochi are self-serve on the right side of the store. The combos are a good deal, $4.75 for the rice roll/soy milk of either sweet/salted, and the egg omelette combo as well. Their rice roll 飯糰／粢飯 are bigger than I've had at other places (e.g. 99 ranch, Chinese bakeries). It's basically fried dough, pork sung, and pickles with sticky rice. I like their pickles(酸菜) as they have a hint of garlic. In my elementary days, the ones I had come with a different kind of pickles (榨菜), which is more salty/slightly spicy. This version is still pretty good. The sticky rice is just al dente if you like rice this way. The fried dough 油條 is not too crunchy and not too soft either. I've had really crunchy ones in the rice rolls and that was uncomfortable to chew thru. Hot salted soy milk has sesame oil with scallions and fried dough - 鹹豆漿（豆漿加油條青蔥麻油）. As a child I would always ask for the sweet version, but I've had the salted version prior to this and this one is pretty good in flavor. However, visually, the soy milk curds up like tofu pudding. Nonetheless, the flavors/textures is delicious. The egg omelette is a bit saltier than I can handle, but with soy milk you should be able to balance that out. The peanut mochi was reportedly "ok". On my way to Mt. High I Yelped some breakfast places and I was so glad that this place showed up in my search! I think this place is comparable to Huge Tree in Monterey Park. I liked their cleanliness and their xlb was amazing! I felt like I had Din Tai Dung's xlb without the wait. Their fan tuan was not as good as Huge Tree's but it was still good. I wish I lived closer. I came here for breakfast, because it had a four star review on Yelp. This is very much a Vietnamese breakfast. We ordered the Chinese donut and the green onion pancake. Both items were disappointing. The Chinese donut looked like a churro, but tasted nothing like it. The green onion pancake didn't taste like a pancake at all. Both were very fried with too much oil. The Chinese donut had no sugar. For the green onion pancake you could see the oil left on the plate, and oil was on my fingers. We didn't finish them. We were still hungry so decided to give something else on the menu another try. This time we ordered the egg omelet and the beef sandwich. Those were both good. I would recommend these items. The egg omelet was pretty big. I was disappointed when I asked for ketchup and they didn't have any. They serve egg why wouldn't they have ketchup? The beef sandwich was the best thing I tried. The bread was a little too flakey for me though. I did have the ice coffee too. It was good. Service was quick. Restaurant looked clean and plenty of seating. 3 stars read more
