I'm giving this place a solid 3.5, but leaning more towards the lower end than the higher. It's good, but also pretty average for a ramen.
This ramen restaurant is located on the second floor of Newpark mall. I came with my family - a party of 5 - during lunch hour and there was a good amount of people, but not packed. We were seated immediately. First thing I noticed when walking in is that the place is decked out in Christmas decorations and also decorated with their business merchandise (shirts, sweaters), and also cute, small floral decorations. I love and appreciate the extra effort they put into make the interior uniquely theirs. It just gives the space a warm, comforting, and welcoming vibe. The space itself is big - high ceilings with large windows - with plenty of seating.
We got a pretty big table. Pretty sure it could seat at least 8 people; so for 5, it was spacious.
I personally ordered a Vegetable Ramen and added on a soft boiled egg. My family members tried the Yugo Ramen (3), a Shoyu Ramen, and as appetizer, we got the Pork & Chicken Gyoza and Okonomiyaki Fries to share. We also ordered three cups of hot Black tea.
My Vegetable Ramen came first. Then the Gyoza along with the fries, and then the rest of the ramens arrived. Surprisingly, they only gave us two plates for the appetizer when there was clearly 5 of us and we had to ask for extra plates, but they were all wet (maybe fresh out of the washer).
The Gyoza - I would give it a 3/5. Tasty, but not quite enough filling. There was some extra space inside my Gyoza to fill. $5 for 6 pieces, I guess that's decent.
Okonomiyaki Fries - Now this was interesting. I think I'd rate this as 3.5/5. Never tried anything like this before, so it was interesting. It's both savory, from the fries and topping, and sweet, from the sauce. I did like how the fries weren't particularly greasy or oily, but unfortunately, they were kind of soft.
Vegetable Ramen - 3.5/5. Now I'd say this is a solid bowl of vegetable ramen, but it doesn't stand out amongst the rest of the vegetable ramen I had before. The kale noodles were interesting! It's green and chewy, but it doesn't have much flavor to it by itself. The vegetable broth is good and flavorful - not too heavy - so it helps masks the blandness of the noodles. Toppings were just normal. It's good, but nothing particularly stands out. On the downside, they only provided one sad slice of tofu (about 2" x 2" x 1/3") for my ramen! I'm glad I added a soft boiled egg to my ramen because that was the best part. In total, my bowl costed $15.5. Have to say, from my experience, that's on the steeper side, so I wish they at least added some extra tofu slices.
As for the other ramen, because I didn't get it myself, I can only note down the comments I heard from my family:
1) The noodles doesn't feel like ramen. Texture wise it feels more like Chinese egg noodles.
2) Shoyu broth doesn't taste like shoyu. It tasted more like seaweed soup.
3) Black garlic oil wasn't strong enough in the Yugo ramen.
Only when we got the bill did we notice that we were charged $3 per cup of black tea (yikes! A little steep in my opinion for a small cup).
Overall, decent ramen place. I wouldn't come back just for it, but if I was nearby, I'd come again. read more
